    1. Definite arm/hand in the back, ill advised
Not quite sure the fall was in keeping with the force of the push but a push it was

Off topic and i know it looks worse on video but the colour of shirts, shorts and socks seemed very (too?) similar

  5. I find it strange to see that Sánchez Martínez was promoted to First over Martínez Munuera… yet the second still gets better/more difficult appointments. IMO, UEFA should have promoted Martínez Munuera instead, although I really like Sánchez Martínez too. However, the former has more experience and is just one year older.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maybe CTA-RFEF had something to say there.

When official lists were published with the promotion of Sánchez Martínez instead of Martínez Munuera I was a bit surprised because the latter seemed to be ahead in terms of international confidence and appointments (e.g. U19 Euro final) but clearly Sánchez Martínez has more potential for Elite referee. He has already handled 4 Clásicos while Martínez Munuera's most important match in domestic competition so far has been the Madrid derby last year. IMO Martínez Munuera has the potential just for being a reliable First Category referee as Estrada Fernández is but not much more of that.

      Delete
    2. Well, Martínez Munuera has not had any Clásicos because of CTA. That's it. Referees with less experience and worse performances have got one soon after becoming FIFA. That's not a good measurement tool. If Martínez Munuera has UEFA's trust, why should CTA mess with that? It's something he has earned. Regarding potential, well, that is very subjective. Hernández Hernández also seemed to have a great potential but seems to have stalled for the last two seasons, IMO.

This appointment, however, shows things how really are for UEFA. If Sánchez Martínez had not been appointed as fourth official, you could say it was because of the seminar. It is a presumably very hot match, between two teams who have been in the Group Stage in recent years, with a draw in the first leg, and in a country with not really a good reputation regarding pressure to referees. Yes, it is a preliminar stage, but could very well be a UCL GS match. Yet the lower ranked referee is selected. IMO, all put together shows a strange situation.

  6. As Greek that lives abroad , I am disappointed with the amount of games are assigned to Greek refs in the last 2-3 years. I cannot blame Uefa though as the problems in Greek football are massive and up to a point unsolvable. Even though the use of foreign refs in big matches of the Greek superleague is a necessity for me, I do believe that Pereira does not promote greek refs in the same way as for instance Vassaras does with Romanian refs ( last year in all European cups greek refs got only 6 assignments -sidiropoulos 5 and papapetrou 1). Any views on the matter? What do you think the major problem with greek refereeing has been?

  7. Interesting minutes in Tel Aviv. First foul, first YC after 12 minutes. Than a possible PK, than a possible offside (interfering yes or no?) resulting in a goal.
    1-0, 30 seconds after that a penalty and 1-1.

YC correct in my opinion. Possible penalty not enough. I think there is a strong case for interfering with the opponent before 1-0.
Than a penalty for Cluj, which was wrong or at least soft in my opinion. Not so good management from Fritz, who tried to get hold of the ball and failed. Took a long time to get the penalty taken.

    Opinions?

    1. Here is the video of the penalty for CFR + Maccabi 1-0 goal (from 0:45).

For me the PK is correct (look at Maccabi's player left leg movement), indeed CFR player forced the contact but never a mistake.

As for the goal scored by Maccabi, it's a very difficult situation, attacker #9 is clearly in an offside position but the ball bounced to him from an opponent.

    3. In my opinion not a penalty, contact was caused rather by attacker, than defender. Maybe you can support referee, but this is something I would never like to whistle.

      Delete
    4. Indeed, Chefren. Defender did nothing, attacker caused it. Not a 100% mistake maybe, but for me it's wrong.

      Delete
    5. Penalty is OK for my taste.

Interesting offside situation - deliberate save and deflection -> still offside.

      Delete
    6. The question is, whether the second touch really is a deflection or an attempt to control the ball, i.e. deliberate play. I think, there are arguments for both, but to me it seems it is just bad technique by the second player and therefore no offside.
And I don't think he is interfering with an opponent in the first place - He doesn't move towards the ball and #16 doesn't seem influenced at all (and doesn't protest...).

For the penalty: The defender is not passive, but steps into the path of his opponent, who jumps a bit early, but has no real chance to avoid the contact. Therefore I share Keyser's opinion here, but can understand that some of you don't like this decision.

Anything known about his general performance?

      Delete
    7. I’d say Fritz is right with both calls

      Delete
    8. PK: a bit soft to me, but can support the referee. Actually it depends on applied criteria for fouls awarded during the match.
Off: I dare to say no ofsside. First, the ball deflected from the deffender and 0n that ocassion the attacker did not interfere with the deffender. Second touch by the deffender was a clear play, so no offside. Hopeffuly, the refereeing team communnicated on that one.

      Delete
    9. General performance was okay. I'd say 8,3-8,4 if both situations are backed, but if it is offside (which I think it is, save and than deflection) he should also be accountable.

      Delete
  8. Martinez Munuera with an easy task. The match was played in a fair manner without harsh tackles or protests. He remained calm and focused and with a good management of players (mostly small talk -> 38', 49', good usage of body language ex. 30'). Disciplinary control was also good with only 2 cautions (53' N22 PLZ for a SPA offence and 90+1' N18 PLZ for a reckless tackle).

AR1 with a wrong offside call against PLZ at min. 32'. No other problem for both AR's.

Overall a good performance by the Spaniard on a "Normal" difficulty match.

    1. I only watched some minutes but there was also YC at 56' for a standing leg tackle, very well seen by Martínez Munuera. I can only agree that this was an "easy task" as you said and no test for the Spaniard.

    2. Strange that the YC at 56' wasn't shown on TV. Even UEFA.com didn't reported it at the time.

  9. Quite challenging game for Fábio Veríssimo but in my humble opinion he passed the difficult test and is ready to handle big games in Europa League.

    - several penalty appeals rejected and rightly so; he wanted to be 100% sure in order to make such a big call and it was a good tactic for this game; maybe one can discuss about the penalty incident in 90' but not enough imo

    - central positioning but working hard on adjusting his position what resulted in not interfering with play and having a rather good view on the incidents

    - mature and no-nonsense way of handling conflicts, etc.; he remained me Brych on this matter: not overly preventive (however, several times he positioned himself close to the corner arc in order to check if the ball is correctly positioned at corner kick at his diagonal), rather reacting on incidents, not hesitating to caution a player for dissent or preventing a quick free kick execution

    - his mental strength was outstanding: he never looked to be influenced by the hot crowd or Basel players creating pressure on him; cool, firm and unmoved

    - as always helpful Portuguese assistant referees (I love their school of being one refereeing team; do you remember Proença's fourth official running along line some years ago?) not only with offsides but also with foul detection

    - six spot-on yellow cards in total (3:3)
33' van Wolfswinkel (BAS) for reckless kick
44' Sainsbury (substitute, PSV) for preventing quick throw-in execution
    45' Xhaka (BAS) for dissent
45+4' Alderete (BAS) for late, reckless foul
67' Bergwijn (PSV) for preventing quick free kick execution
82' Sadílek (PSV) for reckless kick
in 90+2' it should've been a YC to Widmer (BAS) for reckless tackle, Fábio had a good view but decided to not issue it

    Well done team!

    2. For me this is not a DOGSO unfortunately, if one considers the distance, direction of play, direction of the ball and covering defenders.

However, the reaction of the players is unacceptable and I feel the second sending off should have been a straight red card rather than two cautions.

    1. Maybe a bit soft but I don't mind penalty here. The defender had his arms and hands all over his opponent. In my opinion, in these cases we cannot expect the referee to be able to assess the exact intensity of any holding and pushing occurring in the penalty area. If I saw that, I would whistle too.

      Delete
    2. I think this is very reckless defending and the PK decision can be supported. Indeed there is a push from the Rosenborg attacker, but the BATE defender was holding him by the neck the whole time. Also he did not protest over the decision which suggests that he accepted the decision.

  18. FC København - The New Saints, Karim Abed (France)

Easy game, looked almost like a friendly one, with the Danish club winning the 1st leg 0-2 and keeping control today with a 1-0 win.

    (1) Full acceptance by Abed, no major complaints, no crucial episodes in the penalty box.

    (2) Funnily, he seemed to have lost his whistle or something else around 40' as he leaned to the ground quickly to take it back

    (3) Abed was relaxed as shown by his occasional smiles during 1st half. As he had to book a Welsh player in the 2nd half, he got more authoritarian.

    (4) However, one episode to be reviewed at 42'. Video below

    (+) 26' good onside AR1
    (-) 30' looks like a wrong offside by AR2
(-) 42' missed foul and card (video below)
(+) 71' only YC of the game for persistent infringment. Consistent decision as the player had just been warned.

Your thoughts about this foul at 42'?
The referee did not even whistle, but besides the touch to the ball the blue player seems to touch his opponent rather high almost at knee level. No other replays were provided

  29. When I found Dr. Aire I was in desperate need of bringing my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I had no say in the situation at all. He just dumped me after 4 years with no explanation. I contact Dr.Aire through his website and He told me me what i need to do before he can help me and i did what he told me to, after i provided what he wanted, he cast a love spell to help us get back together. Shortly after he did his spell, my boyfriend started texting me again and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and he knows that now. We moved in together and he was more open to me than before and then he started spending more time with me than before. Ever since Dr. Aire helped me, my partner is very stable, faithful and closer to me than before. I highly recommends Dr. Aire to anyone in need of help.
