  4. Fully deserved appointment. Seems Fifa refs commitee being agree with foul missed by VAR during 1/4 and no Stephanie’s responsability involved.

    1. How will they agree to such. You can't place the fault on VAR and there by exonerate Stephannie all because she is your country woman. She made a mistake everyone does and life continue and well deserved but dont come here playing or saying its no fault of hers. It is hers but not a grave mistaje to keep her out

      Delete
    2. Just because it wasn’t your opinion. Be cool. Just say that wasn’t considered as a crucial mistake and FiFA doesn’t blame her for this mistake. But VAR’s responsibility is clear with his appointment, even you didn’t want to see obvious fact.

    3. You actually don want to see obvious fact which is Frappart missed the foul and it's totally on her. Her appointment doesn't mean FIFA concurs with her but yes a mistake was made but not sufficient to keep her out. It's that simple and don't let your judgement be clouded. Be objective she missed it. Before there was VAR it was her duty to call after VAR it's still her duty. It's only VARs fault when it's very difficult to spot or there was no possibility ever of her seeing it but that wasn't the case. This was in the middle of the park

  5. Well deserved assignment for Ms. Frappart.
Sorry, but Ms. Claudia Umpierrez players' management at ITA vs NED was a true catastrophe. No requirements for a 'Referee for the Final' .

  6. It's a little bit shame that performance principle is not used in these tournaments. Outsiders nearly have zero chance to get sonorous games.
It was so clear before the wc that either Umpierrez or Frappart will get the final regardless their performance.
I feel a little bit sorry for Kulcsar, Venegas and Borjas. They were just as good as Frappart (if not even better)
And this comment is not against Frappart, because she is a great referee, what I want to say it's a shame that other referees don't get the chance to prove themselves in such a huge occassion.

  7. Very impressive path for Stéphanie Frappart.
Let's remember that one year ago she officiated the final of Women's U20 WC, still in France. She also attended other FIFA tournaments in past, starting from WC 2015.
Given that (in my opinion) her performances at this WC has been overall good but not so oustanding, we can perhaps argue that the appointment has been made also looking at her previous experiences with FIFA, like Pitana who already deserved more at WC 2014.
For sure she has a big future now, with Ligue 1 waiting and still some goals to achieve in UEFA (Champions League final and so on).
Regarding Umpierrez, I don't know whether the last game has been the reason for leaving her out from final, but it is possible.

  8. Congratulations Mrs. Frappart for a well-deserved FWWC final!
She will have a great future in women and male football competitions.

Interesting fact: Second FWWC final for Claudia Umpierrez (2015,2019) as fourh offical.I think this is a novelty in women and male refereeing that a referee participated in two World Cup finals.

    1. No. Another Uruguayan, Ramon Barreto Ruiz, was a linesman (as it was termed in those days), in both WC Finals, 1974 and 1978. As for me, he was the best FIFA referee in the 1970s, if not at least since I was able to watch international football on tv.

    2. So what you're saying is you want him to complain about this appointment? I'm not thrilled with this appointment either, since I thought she was not convincing at all and others deserved it much more. However, I'm willing to give her a fair chance to make the best out of the final.

      Delete
    3. I don't see anybody complaining, so don't see something that doesn't exist.

    4. I (11:39) meant it to (11:22). He says Castrilli doesn't comment because he doesn't like it, so I asked him if he would prefer it if Castrilli started complaining about this appointment rather than no comment.

  13. Good choice to give the first yellow card there. Not typical for FIFA these days.

However, hard foul directly afterwards from the USA. Not that it has to be a yellow card immeditately, but it doesn;t look too good.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Dutch were playing very physically with some late contact and Frappart was letting them play, but YC was given even though there wasn't much contact if any because slide into player was very late and just meant to intimidate.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shaping up to be good battle between two evenly matched teams, with the Dutch playing possession ball with short passes and the U.S. going for more long balls to attack directly.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love that Frappart isn't afraid to not blow the whistle. New referees who aren't confident blow the whistle for small "trifling" fouls, whereas experienced, confident referees aren't afraid to let let play go on even though contact might look like a foul and really finely discriminate between what is and isn't a foul.

    1. For example, I've learned a lot from watching Premiere League referees, since with all the acting and diving now,l they don't give PKs easily but take a very cautious approach and really have to be 100% certain that the penalty was earned.

      Delete
  17. 37’ on Morgan: what say you? I’d like another replay, but looked like a penalty to me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 36': ok to play on following a penalty appeal by USA. To be honest, live it looked like a simulation by Morgan, replay showed a certain contact. Penalty wouldn't have been a mistake but very soft. Play on seems to be best solution here. Morgan exaggerated the contact.

    1. And it is in adequation with her line since the beginning of the match.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I love her line, really let them play and be physical, much more so than most other referees so far in the tournament.

      Delete
    3. I think I would prefer a penalty here because the charge looked to be more through the back than through the shoulder, but it did start at the shoulder and then continue down into the back so I think it is correct for the VAR to support the referee's decision.

      Delete
  19. 36" borderline PK but good no call.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Good call.
    It was clearly a dive.
Morgan should have received a YC for simulation

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A middle way. Live the perception of simulation because fall was very, very theatrical. Replay could justify a penalty but call would have been very soft. In this case, absolutely ok by VAR to support referee, this is a grey area in which attacker tried to make it bigger.

  23. So far Frappart looks to be not only best on women's side but also could hold her own nicely among men's referees because she really discriminates in deciding what is a foul and doesn't blow her whistle easily. She lets them play, but trick is how to give them a physical game full of contact without letting it get out of hand. Give the players a lot of leeway but be strict when you need to be, showing that clear line of how far they can go.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I feel that Frappart might be losing control of this game

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't really agree. It's been a bit physical but Frappart has been consistent and has shown that she's not afraid to pull out a yellow when a player crosses her line. Some of these cards may frustrate the players (like the early one to the Dutch) but they are absolutely the correct calls, and that is the number one priority. If the players want to get frustrated over the correct calls, that's their problem.

      Delete
  25. I see this game going into PKs, with the Dutch prevailing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 48" looked like she missed foul on Dutch player as U.S. player was falling in her penalty box when Dutch player hit her from behind and low on her back or behind, not a shoulder charge, pushing her to the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That was a nasty collision between O'Hara and Martins.
Notice how Martins was rising up straight, with her eye on the ball
And O'Hara was travelling horizontally in the air.
Martins looks to play the ball ; O'Hara looks to play the player

    1. Surprised it was a drop ball and not a free kick. The USA player seemed to be saying and gesturing that because it was a head injury she could stay on the pitch. If she can't remember the rules then she should be kept off as she might be concussed!

  28. IMO an excellent first half by Stéphanie Frappart, refereeing the game so far in what I would call the “anti-FIFA” way. It was so refreshing to see that early YC given after 10 minutes, clearly putting a signal into the game. She’s quite lenient, she’s very consistent in what she whistles. A YC in 12’ would have been possible as well (reckless foul?)

Not whistling the penalty in 36’ is a correct decision, no need for Del Cerro to rewatch this closer. YC for USA7 in 42’ was a textbook example of what is a SPA.

Well done so far by the officiating crew, hoping for a second half that is as much exciting as the first one.

    1. I agree this somehow "anti-FIFA" approach is working well. It also makes the game more enjoyable

      Delete
  31. I was wrong because it was studs up into Morgan, so correct call.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Should have been an indirect free kick for dangerous play

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dangerous play can be punished with both direkt free kick and indirect free kick. The former in case of contact, the latter without contact between the players

      Delete
  33. It's a great call by VAR to have Frappart go look at that

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think VAR is so new that players haven't adjusted yet. Soon they will know they can't get away with anything and will be more careful, especially in the penalty box.

    1. Agreed, and hopefully long-term this will lead to more goals and more attacking play.

  35. VAR is turning out to be a scourge on the beautiful game, robbing it of its soul

    1. My mind says VAR is good because it corrects mistakes, but my heart is saying it hurts the flow of the game and is too unforgiving. I think it will just take some time to accept it and let go of what we were used to.

  36. There is obviously contact. So, 100% penalty kick.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Crystal Dunn, who just took that shot, went to Southside High School in New York State in the U.S. They've won 16 state championships in the last 29 years.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 79" looked like exaggerated, late reaction by Dutch player to U.S. contact to earn the foul.

    ReplyDelete
  39. From my perspective it looks like that attacker initiated the contact. This was too soft for a PK. I would go with a goal kick.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a good point, but we've two PKs earlier in the tournament from a defender kicking a forward from their follow through, so this call is in keeping with those calls.

  40. Good stuff Stéphanie ! Congratulations !

  41. The penalty showed what is exactly wrong with the laws in the VAR age. Yes, it was technically a foul no doubt. If you review this kind of details with videos, you will find the technical infringement.

But it was ball going out of play, a total accident due to the speed of the game. No matter players being more careful in the future, there will always be this kind of contacts. Previously, they would not been called. No a complete random accident in a nothing situation decides an even battle.

Technically correct but if this is the football future, I will find better things to do. The penalty rule must be changed.

    1. You should add that officials were about to resume the game by corner kick, so they had assessed a touch on the ball by defender, isn't that a clear and obvious mistake to be corrected? What if USA had scored following the corner?
I can understand your point of view, but technically a penalty is a penalty. This was a wrongly assessed incident by referee.

      Delete
    2. I totally understand you and part of me agrees, but one could argue that it should have been called since it was studs up into the chest/stomach of the U.S. player and the Dutch player could have been more careful.

      Delete
    3. I agree 100%.
I can feel that referees are under pressure every time when VAR called for a review, and that will almost always get a different call.

      Delete
    4. Where in the Laws of the Game does it say we should avoid calling fouls if the ball is going out of play?

    5. Don't take that out of context. He explained his point of view and please respect that.

  42. What does everyone think of Messi RC? So many people are saying unwarranted, but he was pushing back with his chest, so easy RC for me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't thin he was pushing back with his chest, but even if that's what you saw, I have a hard time buying the argument that "pushing back with the chest" constitutes "excessive force or brutality."

      Delete
    2. Messi used his right arm and hit the defender in the back while the ball was going out. That is why he got RC. This initiated retaliation.

    1. Yes, and interesting how her line seemed to be much higher than other referees in the tournament. We were rewarded with a much more physical and flowing game as a result of the lack of ticky tack foul calls.

      Delete
    2. My own personal opinion is that she allowed the game to become way to physical if ur gonna give the early yellow that needs to be followed up with consistently calling the hard physical fouls

      Delete
  44. Stéphanie Frappart can look back to a successful officiating in her World Cup Final. She prepared the turf for the second half already in the first half: her line was predictable and clear, a line that was pretty lenient and well accepted by players (thank to that early YC in the first half). Penalty for USA is fully correct, there has been debate here about IDFK or PK, but since it is contact, it has to be PK. YC for reckless foul in that situation is also a good call, not enough intensity (or brutality) to justify a RC for SFP.

All in all, I think we should congratulate the refereeing team for a successful display in this World Cup Final! Well done, congratulations!

Just more FIFA 20 marketing bs so the Polygons and Kotakus of the world can go omg EA so progressive of you! EA dropped one of the most representative video games in the world when they didn't put out a full World Cup game. FIFA 20 has zero African Leagues, only two teams and no licensed African national teams. They only have one league for the Arab world. They are now missing the Russian and Brazilian League and they also under represent Asia, South America and eastern Europe. People outside of England and America deserve representation too.
