  1. Some important observers (waiting for the missing names): Vassaras for Gergő Bogár and De Bleeckere for Juxhin Xhaja must be mentioned before all the others. It seems there is a full focus on all Albanian referees. One can expect an important name for Delajod as well. Then, interesting to note that the Armenian got another game after the unconvincing performance in his previous appearance. Hopefully we will have full game, I already say that if possible I will watch him again, I'm curious to see more. Maybe Rosetti wants to force the debut of Armenian referees in ECL GS, this seems to be the target. Lannoy for Obrenovič is another interesting choice, but in this case referee is already "on his way".

    1. For reference: https://streamff.com/v/de7190

I just looked it up - H. Nalbandyan was born in Aug/1995, he is only 26yrs old. What on earth is the sense in pushing such a young referee who is visibly FAR off required level for UEFA stuff? He has years and years to get better, give him time, please.

Again, Rosetti's desire for short term 'street cred' prevails over any genuine long-term thinking or vision. If the Italian was CEO of a private business, the shareholders would have already removed him for being far too incompetent at the job. The longer he remains in post, the more and more damage he does day-by-day to UEFA refereeing...

  2. Did UEFA watch Vitória Guimarães vs. Puskás Academia, or was that just us? Plautz, then a game in Tallinn (replacement?), followed by Wegereef this week: heady times for the son of Armenia's referees chief, despite his extremely unconvincing game in Portugal. Nepocracy - rather than meritocracy - in action there. Sharply noticeable focus on Albanian referees too: Jorgji, long-time FIFA referee now remarkably of the Elite Development program, with the hugely(!) significant Velasco, but ostensibly still chances for the younger and IMO more impressive Xhaja, whose triad will perform under the eyes of De Bleeckere. Bogár with Vassáras seems a pairing worth remarking on too.

  3. Has the committee completely lost focus on Papapetrou after his game in Rome?

  4. Anyone know the referee for Man U v A Madrid tomorrow?

  5. So, Dario Bel after 5 games at U17 EURO, appointed for the 3rd time already in Quals. First for Ferencvaros, then for Basaksehir and now Rapid Wien, all clubs often participate in GS. Id say a very big achievment for a new referee from cat II

At the same time, Jovic so far without appointments. I hope it is not because he was publicly criticized by Portugal coach after swi-Por recently

  6. Gergo Bogar, 31 years old, the next Viktor Kassai?

    1. Everythin is possible. All of other FIFA referee in Hungary are 37 and 45 years old. Vad and Bognár 44 and 43 years…

  7. Another support from Rosetti for top referees from small countries which he thinks can reach a satisfactory level. While Henrik Nalbandyan has three matches in row he did not debut in group stage yet maybe this season.
Genc Nuza did his debut in UECL group stage last year and another achievement for him and  Kosovo referees to be in the third round this year.

    3. I don't understand why people even attend those games. I watched 15 minutes and it was one of the most boring games I have seen. Completely dead.

      Delete
    4. I watched the first halve which was actually quite interesting and intense for a friendly

      Delete
    5. I am watching the game now and it has nothing to do with a 'friendly'. Many cynical challenges already in the first half. Espen Eskås is so withdrawn and lacks in prevention...

    6. The dark art strikes again :)
Still one of the most difficult teams to officiate…
Just a handful refs in Elite are strong enough to do the dirty job

    7. To be honest, MUN players were much worse today. What Fred did in the last minute was scandalous. The fact that he got a second yellow card instead of direct red card for such behaviour shows well that the referee wasn't in full control of the game. Clips from me later today!

  9. OT:Watching FA Community Shield, and Liverpool penalty was very clear one,how Pawson missed it is very starnge to me.

And after all that,no YC to Dias for handball is really weird to me.

    2. and a missed RC

    3. and now Higler misuses the VAR, dramatic performance

    4. For the whole there he was not accepted by players at all.

Missed fouls, bad calls and his attitude made that possible.

I liked in 1st half his prevention of mass conflict were he prevented more escalations .

But 2nd half started with bad booking where he missed clear handball before that,VAR intervened fortunately.

Then missed clear RC ,befire that missed orange card and Ajax losing were main reason for the frustration they showed at the end.

      All in all,average performance.

  11. Referee for German Supercup Robert Schröder, anyone (especially in Germany) know him?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He is 36 years old, referees in 1. Bundesliga since 2018 (47 games) and performed quite well in the last seasons, therefore his Supercup appointment was deserved. This was his first big/sonorous match, but he alreday did some decisive end of season games in the league.
Based on performance, he should be the first candidate to replace Aytekin on the FIFA list, however I see two reasons against him.
Age: Although there is no fixed limit by FIFA anymore afaik, he would be relatively old as a FIFA newcomer. Hard to say, what DFB thinks about this aspect
Region: His nomination would mean no more FIFA referee for Bavaria, which is the biggest regional association. This could be politically difficult.
For both reasons, Badstübner or Brand could be chosen above him.

      Delete
    2. BTW, he was very good in the game yesterday, I think. Staying in the background when the match was calm, but also ready to step in and to give the neccessary bookings, when it became more hectical towards the end.

      Delete
    3. thank you Philipp, I was quite surprised as a layman for German football to see his name yesterday because his name is also rarely seen in Bundesliga matches involving big teams.

  13. Bobby madden had his 1st match in English football today and a rather interesting double yc here.

    1. Well, the second YC should've been given immediately after second DtR infringement. Instead, Bobby Madley chose to ignore it ('go away' gesture). Then, the player is stepped on (rather accidentally but still) and does nothing wrong. It's difficult to determine what was that second card for...

      Delete
    2. Euro Soccer Ref is quite right (though Madden, not Madley ;)) but I'm certain that the SYC decision will be well regarded here, at least by football public: "finally some action against exaggerating players". On reflection, I'm sure that the Scotsman would agree that the management of the whole scene was not really optimal, tbh.

Madden also missed a RC for SFP in the first six(!) minutes of the game (side info - Bradford player's leg was broken in two places here :/), see below:
      https://twitter.com/i/status/1553412876408324096

As per the highlights, there was also a confrontation after the final whistle, resulting in a further RC, this time for a Bradford player. Soon as reading the appointment, I thought it was a very naïve choice by Michael Jones - games at Valley Parade often become very challenging due to the intense atmosphere, and to throw someone there for his league DEBUT seemed a really poor choice to me. Despite his CL(!) experience, it seems that Mr Madden fell foul of that this afternoon.

      Delete
    3. Rewatching the SYC incident, is clear that the stamp on the Doncaster player was 100% deliberate (no brutality, so YC to be given). Having ignored the second DtR, to send him off for either "Simulation - Injury" or "Aggressive Behaviour" (small push afterwards) is very unsatisfying / completely wrong, tbh.

      Delete
    4. (and yes, as expected, his (management of) the SYC is very highly praised by the users on our 'RateTheRef' blog; we really live in a different world here in English refereeing, I must say... :))

  15. Quiet evening for Kehlet in Riga (I think his mark around 8.0-8.2), he missed mandatory YC in 32' (stamp), very passive, he just give some little smile for his call. Very low foul line detection in not (never) challenging game. Technically I saw him as a "lazy" referee, he doesn't want to bother with everything. I think he doesn't have any elite capabilities, but his capabilities it's quite enough for become upper 1st category referees. I think his charisma and physical appearance are actually similar to Bjorn Kuipers.

    1. IMO red card more than supportable.

    2. Expected decision is YC by most of referees, no central position, still something can happen. However, nobody can deny the chance of a OGSO, so in a game with VAR, this will be supported, the Slovenian decided for the bravest call, that nowadays is always avoided...

    3. Indeed, RC is nowadays the most 'brave' decision and many referees seem like looking for the slightest of trifles/excuses to avoid giving a RC even in 85/15 RC situations.

But IMO RC is the correct and expected decision.

  17. tragic decision by a very little referee in the match salvia Praha-panathinaikos
Rudy Buquet tragic game management, so sad for an international referee

    1. joke of a decision, PAO player didn't ask for anything, can't give this a 2nd YC, buquet souldve done better there.

    2. UEFA should demote him immediately. Shame on them.

  18. Very doubtful 2nd yc for diving in Slavia match for Pana player Palacios. Huge mistake by Buquet.

  19. Buquet's 2YC in Slavia-Panathinaikos.

Not a penalty, but I'm skeptic it was a dive.

    2. Really bad decision by Buquet. This is never a dive.

    3. Somehow I got the impression the Panathinaikos player was looking for a penalty. Slavia player's tackle clearly hit the ball (obviously no PK) but he "decided" to throw himself down, isn't it a bit strange if he doesn't aim to looking for penalty.

    4. If the player was looking for something he would have thrown himself in the ground at the first tackle which would result in a DFK+YC.

    5. The simulation can't be 100% denied, VAR wouldn't intervene because never a clear penalty, but a mistake in reality. Buquet should have allowed the play to continue, realizing, thank to players behavior in that case, that nobody would have asked for the call... sometimes you make things difficult just not waiting for a second.

  20. Now a DOGSO RC for Slavia but what an awful management of the scene, changing his mind 40 seconds later after giving a YC - under pressure of PAO players?

(The scene 'isolated' is quite interesting in terms of SPA vs DOGSO, in Spain those last man offences are always given YC if they happen within the attacking team's own half)

I'm always a RC for DOGSO fan when it is possible to issue it, as you know, but in this case very difficult to support the decision, really not sure about the control of the ball, that is likely, but less likely than other situations, and we are in the attacking team's half. Definitely too harsh.
Then, about the management, really speechless, he had to wait before showing YC if not sure. I think that he did that because used to have VAR, so in that case the technology would have intervened, but he then realized that in this game he didn't rely on this help and tried to solve evertyhing by himself...

    2. I think that in both cases (2nd YC and RC) the management of an international referee was unacceptable. About the 2nd YC there are doubts about the intention of Pana player. Leaving a team with 10 players for this incident so early is not a fair decision. For the RC, may be YC was a more right decision, but the management was at least tragic. I do not want to see again this referee.

    3. I don't hope but I fear that UEFA Referee Committee will 'put Ruddy Buquet on the same boat' as they did with Moen.

  21. Igor Stojčevski is not with the best performance in a relatively easy game.
Crucial mistake the first goal allowed by AR2. Huge offside, where one defender was behind the goalkeeper, but attacker as well. Should have been an easy call. Shame, because it influenced the outcome of the game.
YC for Molde nr.25 should have been a RC for my taste (62'), zero chance to play the ball. I know in recent standards most of the referees would give a YC, but I would massively prefer a RC for SFP.
2 mins later booking for away team nr.6 for reckless challenge, could have been also a RC for SFP. Very nasty challenge, maybe the point of contact saves the decision, but it was a very bad tackle and I would prefer a RC here as it was very dangerous.
77' missed YC for SPA for away team nr.18.
Also he has an impression of a bit lazy referee. No difficulties for controlling the game, but not a good overall impression.

  22. Glova totally lost control last 10 minutes of Brøndby-Basel. IMO he doesnt take his opportunities to take easy fouls and then it went totally out of control last 10
