Two Second Category referees - António Nobre and Robert Harvey - observed by Ingvarsson (who has become an important UEFA observer I think) and Batista respectively. Especially, the Portuguese's game is very interesting as Basel surprisingly lost against CSKA-Sofia in the first leg.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Rumšas with Lannoy (0-3 after first leg though) and Al-Hakim with Rizzoli (open game, Slovan lost first leg 0-1 and will play at home now) are worthy of mention.
Nothing against the abilities of Mr Valjić, but now I see it, I'm very surprised that they didn't send a top (top) rated observer, even committee person, to assess Stegemann in Nice. Perhaps I'm just influenced by first leg score, but even so. Maybe the race for the (inevitable) next German Elite is already decided, de facto?
ReplyDeleteI would say that Stegemann and Osmers are about the same level, personally I slightly prefer the latter one. Furthermore, both were promoted at the same time in First Category and both are the same age. We`ll see how will they perform this autumn because one of them will likely replace Aytekin in December. Theoretically, Germany has 4 Elite referees. Practically, only 2. So yes, a more important observer was expected.
DeleteI can imagine that Germany loses Aytekin‘s spot in Elite. Maybe there will be a promotion a bit later, but it seems too early for Stegemann or Osmers to become Elite. Speaking about national performances and standing, Stegemann is clearly ahead. He had a great last season with the Cup Final as a reward. Internationally, looking at the appointments, it looks like Osmers is more in UEFA‘s focus.
DeleteAnd what does it tell us that Stegemann is working with Mark Borsch (who achieved almost everything)? :)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteChefren.... you made a little mistake, wich i can fully understand with so much nationalities and names.... but mr. Johannesson (observer in Vitesse-Fiorentina) is not from Romania :-)
DeleteMy mistake, not Chefren's :)
DeleteMike Dean recognized his mistake not to alert Taylor during 2-2 Chelsea - Tottemham goal. Honest but unacceptable. He has to be suspended for a while…
DeleteYou suggest that I should be suspended too? :D
DeleteNo lol 😂 you are perfect guy ;)
DeleteDean explained that the incident was not an act of violence for him. If someone pulls an opponent by the hair on the pitch, how can that not be a violent act? After speaking to other referees about the scene, he now has a different opinion. He checked the situation. So the excuse is just stupid!
DeleteMike Dean will be back in Stockley park next weekend mark my words
DeleteUcl when?
ReplyDeleteTwo days before game.
DeleteDo you think Harvey has a chance of promotion too 1st category?
ReplyDeleteI would say most of the referees from Category 2 who are in this round are being scrutinised for promotion. Nations League appointments in September should show more who is on the radar.
DeleteLetexier with three red cards in Ligue 2 game Saint Etienne - Le Havre. More generally, having followed some games over the last years, I can say that in this competition there are many red cards incidents all matchdays. I don't know whether French referees are harsh or the players act always in a disgraceful manner :)
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to get videos of the reds
Deletehttps://streamable.com/42a6wg 3RC for Dogso
Deletehttps://streamja.com/nzj1M
DeleteThe third red card, absolutely correct decision.
what do you think about this penalty at Paderborn vs Holstein Kiel (7-2)
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/2uygwd
penalty! defender hit the player at the head after playing the ball.
Play on! he played the ball fairly.
IFK! indirect free kick for a lower header. attacker put himself in danger by putting his head down.
HONDA : For the German readers of the forum, could you please describe Florian Badstübner's career and his potential from a FIFA perspective? I saw him just now in Dortmund and was very impressed. What a great referee!
ReplyDeleteThats what I recently said. He is still very young, needs 1 or 2 more seasons in Bundesliga, but I am quite sure that he will be the next German with a FIFA-nomination. For me the biggest talent of the young refs here, together with Jablonski, who entered the FIFA-list already.
DeletePS: By the way, some refs told me recently, Badstübner reminds them to the young Wolfgang Stark. Well, Badstübner smiles much more, has more communication, but about enforcing the rules, he is straight forward and crystalclear, too...
DeleteHONDA: thanks.
DeleteJarred Gillett is Australia not England.
ReplyDeleteWell is he not registered through England?
DeleteLast fifa registration was through Australia. He is Australian. In clubs pages he's named association is Australia.
DeleteAntónio Nobre 1st Category soon probably. And maybe Elite in a few years. The guy is good.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I saw in U19 Euro, he's material for solid 1st Cat but I'm skeptic about Elite.
DeleteUEFA seems focused on Pinheiro now.
I think that João Pinheiro can be Elite too. But only after Soares Dias retire, because Pinheiro is Dias VAR on UEFA Games. But let's see, Tiago Martins is a top 5 VAR atm, and this could let Pinheiro to go to Elite with Artur still there.
DeleteAgree with the first comment, watching this important match in Basel he did an excelent performance. Could be a potencial Elite Referee in the near future.
DeleteQuite controversial performance by Pablo González Fuertes in Mallorca-Betis, 15 YCs and two PKs given (1st one for handball after OFR, 2nd one very discussed as soft/wrong)
ReplyDeleteThis year Pablo don’t sound good. Before start the league, is is serious candidate to relegate 2 División.
DeleteIdk if there will be any demotions next year if both Mateu and Del Cerro quit. RFEF regulations say that every year there must be at least 2 referees leaving the LaLiga list (and two promotions from 2nd category to replace them), no matter the circumstances.
DeleteIn fact, they already did this last year in 2nd category, the two 'demotion spots' were filled with the two referees who had to quit for age reasons (Gorka Sagués Oscoz and former LaLiga referee Eduardo Prieto Iglesias). At the end of the day, a referee getting demoted also means the committee realizing they might have made a mistake promoting it in the first place.
A ok, maybe you are right. Thanks
DeleteTwo red cards shown to Rangers players by Collum in HIB vs RAN, everyone is unhappy with RC to Lundstram for a tactical foul on counter. No doubt about the second RC shown for violent conduct with a swing of the arm into opponents face
ReplyDeleteWell "everyone" doesn't include me. It was an excellent RC for 'challenge as an attack', Gianluca Aureliano made an equally good call today in Serie A under the same heading.
DeleteI heavily agrée however there was a similar challenge in that game given as a yellow as well as another challenge in Ross County vs Kilmarnock which was similar but was done in a scissor motion which was wrongly awarded with a yellow
DeleteIMO RC Lundstraf is soft, same for the Hibs penalty
DeleteFirst thing, I don't understand why Collum was appointed to an early Saturday game 2 days after a European match.
DeleteFor me Rangers penalty was supportable. Hibs maybe should have had one for holding.
1st red card for me is absolutely crystal clear as a red card, challenge from behind, lunge absolutely no regard for the ball. 2nd rc actually looked like accidental contact to me, though again supportable
Three PKs for Gil Manzano in Celta-Real Madrid, all correct IMO (1st and 2nd one for handball, 3rd one for a trip), only the 1st one needed an OFR.
ReplyDeleteThird one is not correct for me and absolutely not a yellow card. It’s a collision between two players. There is no act of a foul. They both run into each others legs.
DeleteCollum in Hibs v Rangers. Penalty at the the start. 1st RC 2:35. 2nd RC immediately after.
ReplyDeletehttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WBCvAPr-U3k
I also noticed yesterday that Gil Manzano changed his card showing procedure after this incident in the Europa League SF where he accidentally showed Eintracht GK a RC when he wanted to book him: https://streamable.com/flr84k
ReplyDeleteNow he keeps his cards in the shorts pockets.
About time, was silly what he did before
DeleteHe had both in his pockets and now both in his shorts? A bit like Orsato I think
DeleteOrsato used to have red in a shirt pocket I know that. Best way is like Kuipers and Taylor imo.
DeleteAs we are talking about card showing procedure,IMO the best way to do it is Italian way,in shorts .
DeleteRizzoli had the best procedure imo.
Yes, I assume that Gil Manzano also has the RC in his shirt pocket? Otherwise he can still make the same mistake.
DeleteInteresting VAR intervention from a serie B game, I agree with the call. To me, even a clear simulation, with attacker aware of what was happening and looking for the penalty. The celebration after the whistle is surely the big clue.
ReplyDeleteVideo:
https://streamable.com/n2d1m0
Very long check by VAR before intervening, and I can understand why: in such situations even a very soft contact with keeper's arms seems always to be enough, in this case there was nothing.
Chefren I dont see contact with gk, but what about defenders pulling? For me it is not enough for pk, but as a VAR I wouldn't call the referee for OFR. What do you think?
DeleteUkrainian Boiko. Nice to see. After 1st match (0-1) . Good luck
ReplyDeleteInteresting appointment for Harvey. He is very unfit and large build and not rated domestically so this is a very big shock.
ReplyDeleteInteresting perspective Anonymous 10:57. In Ireland only two of FIFA referees have reached group stage, Harvey x3 (UEL and 2x UECL) and Hennessy x1 (UEL). Not so shocking for UEFA it would seem.
ReplyDelete13 YCs by Reinshreiber in the 2nd leg of APOEL-Djurgardens, and I think it won't be the highest amount of cards in a game given in this week of CL/EL/UECL playoff 2nd legs
ReplyDeleteYep plenty games look to be really competitive and challenging for refs.
DeletePetrescu misses a crystal clear penalty after 20 mins in Enschede.
ReplyDeletePlease explain? In what minute exactly and what happened?
DeleteVery challenging match for Petrescu in Enschede so far. I think he's doing a good job since far, though I missed the penalty moment. But he's calm and shows leadership.
ReplyDeleteFirworks trown from Fiorentina fans in a stands of Twente fans below them. Twente players asking Petrescu to pause the match
ReplyDelete2nd time. Petrescu must stop this match
DeleteBut instead he gives a YC to the Twente coach. Embarassing performance.
DeletePetrescu clearly has not watched Stefanski last week and chooses the same line.
ReplyDeleteAnd now Petrescu misses a RC for Bonaventura. Very weak performance and no better than Stefanski in Florence.
ReplyDeleteVery funny scene in Nice where Stegemann had to stop the game to change his shoes, one of them has been completely ripped apart :D
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/RMCsport/status/1562872668332109832?t=5p6QsCB5L6ylhWxSxpk40w&s=19
DeleteDo you think all UEFA officials bring at least two sets of shoes to matches? I will admit that I have gone to relatively "big" matches with only one set of footwear. This possibility never really crossed my mind...
DeletePersonally I bring a pair with molded cleats and a set of turf shoes, and wear one of them depending of the nature of the pitch (natural/artificial surface)
DeleteAs for UEFA officials, I think most of them always carry the same set, but some of them might bring several to and adapt to eg the pitch condition (I recall Kuipers often switching between Adidas copa Mundial molded cleats/Mundial team turf shoes). At least Stegemann will always do so after what happened to him tonight :')

ReplyDeleteTamas Bognar decided Viking-FCSB with a penalty deep in extra time. Very good job!
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/7imhee
DeleteVery well spotted by Tamas Bognar, Viking defender slipped and accidentally hit the attackers foot with his left knee
DeleteHmm.. Courageous decision to be diplomatic, no clear penalty. Maybe even a mistake.
DeleteBtw: What is the language of the broadcast? Sounds nothing like neither Norwegian nor Romanian. Some eastern European I missed?
Absolutely correct decision. This why somebody is brilliant. While the ball was not there he had seen what happened. 100% foul. Well done Mr. Bognar !
DeleteWatch how the attacker starts a semi-salto after having been hit only slightly! Ball was already gone and for me no reckless challenge, so no penalty for me. Far away from brilliant IMHO. Painful if this was the deciding goal…
DeleteNever a penalty. Light contact exaggerated.
DeleteMax
DeleteIt is Norwegian
Excellent spot, indeed. This is a penalty to be whistled only in case of reckless action, and the tackle by defender, after the moment in which attacker played ball, was surely dangerous. One could argue about the intensity and the fact that tackle was low, but never a mistake to assess it as worthy of YC. So, absolutely OK. The other point of view is made by people who wouldn't whistle for such situations, and I can understand what they think, but referee did absolutely right there.
DeleteCalling penalty without card would have been surely more controversial.
These are penalties only referees are cheering about, the general football community won’t be happy when ties are decided by calls like this
DeleteFor me clear penalty. If the referee dont whistle that is clear mistake. Well done Mr. Bognar.
Deletehttps://twitter.com/StigNilssen/status/1562902326528327680
Deletehttps://twitter.com/eirikaase/status/1562878905609904129?t=HiOPP4p_r2fJ9vpiGsIQuw&s=19
DeleteIs thos rally a penalty? Almost no contact. No need for defender to jump like that.....
DeletePenalty situations are Bognar's speciality - https://coub.com/view/17iefd - both was him in Hungary, first was a penalty, second is a yellow card for the attacker...
DeleteDOGSO RC given by Obrenovic in Rapid Wien-Vaduz.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/E6G6n
The Slovenian confirms he is a brave referee, this is another situation in which most of referees would issue YC, the RC is not wrong and one can understand the decision. We are seeing many brave decisions in such preliminary rounds and play-offw, I wonder whether it will be the same by some Elite referees in CL and EL in GS?
DeleteYou must be kidding with the match IN Twente. I am Norwegian, spending holiday in Holland and I have been in the stadium. It was one of the best refereeing performances that I saw in the last years.
ReplyDeleteI hope you’re the one kidding around. There was no clear line in foul selection (several easy calls versus more clear offences not punished), inconsistent disciplinary sanctioning, too many talks with too little effect (which took a lot of time not compensated for), and management of added time was below par. The 2nd caution together with the substitutions fin the added time for example took at least 2 minutes, and only one was added.
DeleteHahaha what? It was the baddest performance I have seen so far this year.
Delete+1 for Petrescu
ReplyDeleteVery rare to see 2nd div. team in European competition group stage, but with UECL everything can happened, a team from micro-state making history tonight, what a shame for big team like Rapid Vienna. Congrats to FC Vaduz and Liechtensteiners! Also for FC Ballkani and Kosovar!
ReplyDeleteHas there ever been a referee from Liechtenstein in UEFA competitions or is this not possible since they don’t have their own league?
DeleteRoland Beck was a FIFA international Referee from Liechenstein. Congratulation to Vaduz, has said they made the history tonight
DeleteWhat a game in Bratislava
ReplyDeleteopinions on the referee in this match??
DeleteHow was Erik Lambrechts' match in Israel?
ReplyDeleteWatched him live at the stadium, and he didn't impress me at all. Apart of one missed mandatory YC he didn't made serious mistakes, but he was very inconsistent in his foul detection (both teams became nervous and irritated because of it) and wasted amounts of time for long speeches before every corner and FK. Hopefully, it was just a "bad day" for him, nobody is perfect.
DeleteBoth ARs were faultless. 4OF was very helpful by calming down the hot atmosphere on both benches.
I didn't watch the game live, but I was very curious to see the officiating by Petrescu, after having read the comments on the blog (impossible to make an opinion, based on that, clearly many fans from both sides wrote).
ReplyDeletePlease find below all the mentioned incidents from this game, and all the yellow cards issued by referee. If there is something more, just report (no time to watch full game).

(Potentially) Crucial situations:
55' Keeper handling outside box, DOGSO?

Conclusive replay (correct decision)
https://streamable.com/7pn1v2
Two YCs to Igor (Fiorentina):
83' - First for reckless challenge close to SFP https://streamable.com/lcvdev
90'+2 - Second for time wasting
https://streamable.com/5yndi3
22' Penalty appeal Twente
I think this should be the incident reported on the blog by a reader as "Crystal clear penalty":
https://streamable.com/srpabf
I think this is the classic performance in which you can support referee for all decisions, no crucial mistakes, but surely one could have expected by far more. Rather than being unable to handle such difficult task, I think referee was maybe a bit surprised that he had to face this hot clash and he was not prepared. Working in prevention would have helped him in controlling more the game, however one must also add that this was a very challenging scenario.
Just as example, the booking for impeding the execution of a free kick was absolutely avoidable if you ask me, with more presence by referee, who decided to stay far away all the time, not 100% in the game, the same for some occasions in which he tried to make him respected by players, but he failed (see 60'), he had to be stronger. The stadium didn't help him because the pressure was more than big. About suspending the game or not for fireworks and crows interference, not my competence, I will not judge on that.
Agree. I don’t blame the referee. The game was more challenging than a regular CL game…
DeleteDo we know what the player did to time waste for his 2YC? I realize the Twente players appealed for it, so something happened. But it's difficult to discern from the video. Did he kick the ball away to a different location?
DeleteHe was about to execute the free kick and after a certain time he left that to keeper. According to referee, this was deliberate to waste time. Just a remark about this incident, watching the video in my opinion you can esily understand that referee at first glance didn't remember that player was alreadyu booked, he needed a bit to show then second YC.
DeleteFor context about this YC: the Fiorentina players did this several times in the match. He was very clear this had to end, with the time wasting and after a long time leaving the ball to another player. He was honestly forced to give this 2YC.
DeleteI have to say I agree with this 2YC, these situations are completely against the meaning of sportsmanship, and I fully agree with RikB that he literally forced the referee to issue a card.
DeleteAbout the potential penalty in 22', saying this with all due respect, but I really don't see a "crystal clear penalty" (as someone reported), it's rather play on IMO. However, are we even sure that the ball wasn't out already, at the specific moment of that incident?
Regarding other incidents, I think the referee can be backed in all of them except the reported situation in 56', where I think it definitely should have been a card for Bonaventura. However, I can certainly agree on the referee being passive overall, sometimes looking underprepared, maybe even overwhelmed at times.
2' red card from Vad in Ballkani... always interesting to see such early red cards given recent standards. Anyone have video?
ReplyDeleteI looked for it all day long, but definitely nothing... :(
DeleteFor DOGSO, clear + correct decision.

Only watching the available highlights on my end here in the US, so didn't see the entire scene. But it appears Stegemann took almost a full minute to show a 2YC when he called the foul immediately. Anyone watch the incident in question? It appeared as though the Nice players would have been much more accepting of the card if it had been shown immediately.
ReplyDeleteLet's see maybe I can download this, but it is known that German referees very often wait even long time before showing cards, that's never good, remember Brych, Aytekin, Siebert... all of them with this style very often. This is because in Germany they can do that without consequences, in Europe this can be different...
DeleteGerman and English style.
DeleteIn Italy the referee takes out the card before he whistles and runs with it in the air 🤣
...and holds it with two fingers 🤣
