Cüneyt Çakır has decided to retire. He informed the TFF President that he had recieved many offers from abroad, but that he wanted to become a referee trainer by ending his refereeing career in Turkey.
ReplyDeleteProbably new payment system in UEFA helped to make his decision.
DeleteImmediately? Or at the end of the year / the season?
DeleteUnfortunately, immediatly
DeleteWhats the new payment system?
DeleteThank you Cuneyt Cakir. You made us proud. Good luck.

Funny moment from DCG :)
Probably a difficult/strange moment for him, without his friends who have been his AR for years after their retirement.
DeleteHONDA : Difficult to replace two friends at your side as well as two pure excellencies, something different is there even in the habits, in the tasks each had, in the undertone agreements, in understanding each other with a glance or a silence. It is not easy.
DeleteCarlos Del Cerro Grande in Ferencváros - Qarabağ.
ReplyDeleteIt was surely a challenging game for the Spanish referee in Budapest. After the first leg ended in a draw, the tie was fully open and the progress of the game showed clearly that.
He was forced to change his known style, by issuing cards in first half, despite of trying to let the game flow (one of the given cards follows an attempt to play-on on a previous foul). I think his performance was good, he had always the game under control, what happened during the game was not his fault, but rather players behavior, I think he couldn't have done anything better to avoid some situations. The away-team scored an early goal and they managed to build the success on that, but the game was still intensive, until the end. The 0-3 when a few minutes were still missing to end can deceive about the difficulty of the match.
6' Assessment of a fair challenge on the ball
https://streamable.com/3naxxp
Due to a goal scored a few seconds later, replay was not shown. However I think we can say correct assessment with clear gestures by referee.
28' - Management
https://streamable.com/wqtti4
Unclear what happens before a throw-in, due to a replay, very likely away-team started with wasting time strategy. Referee showed to be in control of this situation.
30', 31' - YCs for SPA
https://streamable.com/bi2j76
Heated minutes in first half. Both decisions fully correct, in the second case, still an attempt to play on after the challenge by first player.
34' - YC for reckless challenge
https://streamable.com/492v78
You can see Del Cerro trying again to let game flow, but nothing to do, a fully reckless challenge follows and I must say even borderline to RC, player injured. I think in this moment, in first half, he realized that it was definitely better to have a certain approach in this game.
62' - YC for reckless use of arm
https://streamable.com/a5cr2x
This can be discussed, due to intensity, maybe possible to assess it as only careless, clear foul, no mistake. The YC is rather harsh but not fully wrong. Always difficult to assess such challenges.
78' - Goal, no offside
https://streamable.com/89jy2p
Since it was reported on the blog about a possible offside of Qarabag players, I can confirm it was regular goal.
84' - YCs for mutual misconducts
https://streamable.com/vg6cr8
After a classic action we see very often in many games (forcing the player to get up, a confrontation follows. Both YC fully correct decisions.
85' - Goal, prevention
https://streamable.com/ijyerx
The skills of an Elite referee are in this video, after a goal in the last minutes that can open again the game, even though nothing apparently happens, just run close to net to prevent possible conflicts. Very well done, I think he did that because he saw already the player from Qarabag in potential action against opponent.
90'+1 YC for time wasting
https://streamable.com/gqnkdw
90'+3 YC for handball stopping a shot on goal
https://streamable.com/qdrl2n
Very well seen, VAR confirmed it was outside.
90'+6 Penalty appeal
https://streamable.com/adyoe5
This is maybe the most difficult incident of the game to assess, in the meaning that you can have easily arguments in favor of penalty and the careless action is fully evident, with the defender creating a contact with knee. Attacker falls for that, enough for a whistle. Would have been in my opinion something more than a soft penalty because the action is very clear and from one side, but I think an observer can back this choice. Furthermore, but this shouldn't be argument for assessing referee, no impact on the game in any case, even in case of penalty, final whistle to follow after the possible goal (very last minute and maybe already after that). Delayed final whistle by del Cerro who suspended the game, still difficult to manage these moments, in this clip you can see the difficulty that a referee has with VAR, he must force himself to do something different than the past.
It was a pleasure to see finally a good Del Cerro in such hot game.
Let's clarify "something more than a soft penalty", I wanted to say, not a soft penalty, but rather an expected one. In the meaning of the contrary to soft.
DeleteI watch the penalty appeal incident deep in stoppage time, at a glance similar to the Leicester vs PSV penalty appeal incident where Kruzliak was in charge.
DeleteThanks for the clips, Chefren!
DeleteAgree with your resume that Del Cerro had an expected level / good performance in what seemed a hot context. Especially after the third goal we can praise the Spaniard for 'keeping a lid' on everything. Points for criticism: missed foul before 31' booking, missed simulation before 34', whistle in mouth for cautions is too poor/lazy impression, +96' is a clear penalty IMO but play on is acceptable rather correct for UEFA nowadays.
As a general remark, quite clear that Del Cerro is now a very different format of referee than who was excellently able to chat through games like Schalke vs. Man City with all the technical problems as a players friend. Now, it seems he focuses only on calls, as a more distant leadership figure. But this performance is definitely a positive step from what I saw from him in Ajax vs. Benfica, Seville derby and Egypt (clips) from him. It seems he found new motivation from somewhere! My regards for that, especially having missed a WC ticket.
Keeping up a solid/consistent level, he should be in the race for EL final this season.
I never like it when a referee issues cards with whistle-in-mouth, without realizing why I don’t like this, until I read Mikael’s comment. It can look a bit lazy, indeed. Thanks for that. :D
DeleteOn topic: I’m glad that DCG is back on track again! It’s always great to see a referee being versatile and able to change his approach.
The whistle in mouth is also looks rude and prevents you from being able to talk to players at a point where you could/should be communicating with them. It takes half a second to ensure your whistle isn't in your mouth before carding. I've never understood referees who rise to this sort of level and haven't had this behavior conditioned out of them, so to speak. There was a time period (I'd say late 90s into 2000s) where this was a huge no-no and instructors really got on referees who did it. It seems like, ironically, some of the instruction has become lazy around it. We're too worried about other things to make sure the basics are correct.
DeleteAs for the penalty appeal... I don't understand arguments against a penalty there. He's played the ball skillfully through the opponent's legs and cut back. The defender misses the ball and has significant knee on knee contact while taking away the space the attacker needs to go to. It's a clear, clear, clear foul. But we say "not enough" because... why? I am a broken record in this regard, but it's not really a tenable regime when VAR upholds penalties like Bastien's first one and recommends penalties like his second one yet doesn't want to intervene here. This doesn't increase consistency or instill more confidence in officiating. It just makes things more erratic.
The 90+6 it's a clear penalty, in my oppinion.
DeleteWhy we say "it's 90+6 and no difference in the match"?!
Since when referees make decisions looking at the cloock and ... this is an affordable call !!!
I'm not saying that we don't look at our watch when making decisions ... but it should not be a justification, when the decision is wrong!
@usaref: agree. Still there were plenty of big names that regularly keep/kept the whistle in mouth. Orsato, Brych, Kuipers are the first that come to mind, but there are many more. I don’t like it.
DeleteI think its less common under the new generation. E.g. Turpin, Makkelie, Kovacs have the whistle on their wrist. Marciniak on his finger :D
Excellent Del Cerro in this match, well done!!
DeleteThanks Chefren.
ReplyDeleteMy general observation is that many referees decided to issue early YC, even the big hitters who used to manage or used to be lenient with sanctions. Could this be a signal there are (hopefully) new UEFA instructions that advice to follow the law, to issue the damn card even when it’s early?
Some interesting clips from Bulgaria. It is interesting to hear your oppinions.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/33hdet - Faul or penalty? VAR intervention or not?
https://streamable.com/3cbs9j - punishable handball !?!
https://streamable.com/7fzaoa - handball or not? VAR intervention or not?
https://streamable.com/9llxfw - faul or not in APP? VAR or not?
https://streamable.com/w9blj2 - punishable handball
Deletehttps://streamable.com/46dbwz - punishable handball!?!
ReplyDeleteNever. That’s clearly a natural movement as he is shooting the ball.
DeleteAre you kidding? The hand is to the shoulder and is comind by an opponent!
DeleteFor the other situations:
The first one is a clear foul. The defender is standing still and the attacker is initiating the contact. I think OFR is needed
The third one - for me the defender is touching the ball and there is hand-ball, so for me is penalty and OFR
The last one - for me is a clear holding and the referee should see it. Maybe is not for VAR
Leran the laws of the game and what natural means. He was just about to shoot and every human in history will have to out their arm there for balance. It’s a completely natural movement when shooting a ball. Doesn’t matter if it came from the opponent. Thankfully the referee also knows this.
DeleteObservers for UCL Play-Offs:

Qarabağ - Viktoria Plzeň: Bernardino González Vázquez
Bodø/Glimt - Dinamo Zagreb: Francesco Bianchi

Crvena zvezda - Maccabi Haifa: Lutz Michael Fröhlich
Trabzonspor - København: Vítor Manuel de Melo Pereira
Benfica - Dynamo Kyiv: Mehmet Murat Ilgaz
PSV Eindhoven - Rangers: Juan Antonio Fernández Marín
Interesting observers for Bodø/Glimt - Zagreb. I’d say, either a younger (Elite) referee or an Elite not in his best period.
DeleteFor the Copenhagen / Rangers / Benfica games, based on observer it will be very experienced Elite referees, I think
Also game in Turkey, I think we can expect younger (unexpected name) referee?
DeleteMy theory is
Delete-Important observer for a so so game = promising referee or (experienced) Elite not in his best period
-A not too important observer + quite sonorous game = very experienced elite
-Important observer + sonorous game can be everything ;)
Missed clear foul + yc in 27min for Partizan by Sanchez Martinez.
ReplyDeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteFIFA has moved the opener (Qatar-Ecuador) to 20 November. I’m already predicting Turpin to be the referee, Frappart 4O.
Rationale:
DeleteA team from the Mid East and South America; UEFA referee seems logical. It used to be a big name and a returnee. And considering FIFA is promoting the female referees… Anticipating on a full French team seems a good possibility 👍🏼
The move definitely brings more attention to the match being played on a Sunday, not Monday and now being actually the first game.
DeleteNyberg, Hdz Hdz, Kruzliak and Peljto appointed for play-offs 1st legs

Very good clip of the only booking 😜 And you post it in the wrong topic 😉
DeleteYou will never find a referee like him... the change of gesture beetween being ready to whistle for foul and advantage before goal is very elegant. About the coach management, nobody would have done that, he is always able to do something different than other referees. You must be very convinced about yourself skills to make such things on the pitch. I think this was the key of his success.
DeleteAbout the booking, I don't understand the video TBH...
Thanks for the advice Hans.
DeleteFor the trained (past WCs) observer, is easy to work out what happens at 63' ;). AZ no.8 is involved in a duel where he gets caught, you see him limp slightly, after Dundee United miss the shot, he obviously shouts/gestures at Mateu, who then cautions him, before the Spaniard gives the requisite whistle to restart play, from the goalkick, as required in the laws. Yellow card given for dissent.
A pleasure. What a fantastic and natural ref!!
DeleteHONDA : Mateu is a referee, he does not play the role of referee
DeleteYes, a great pleasure!
DeleteIt made me proud to see mr Lahoz there. I know this club and city very well :) Hope he still enjoyed it, regardless the scoreline
@Mikael. If you guys also post conference league performance in Europa League topic and vice versa you can better make one topic for the Thursday matches. Now there are on multiple pages reactions about the same topic. For me unclear
DeleteRefereeing HL from Bastien's Dinamo Zagreb vs. Ludogorets Razgrad game:

Predictions:
ReplyDeleteQarabağ - Viktoria Plzeň: Slavko Vinčić (SVN)
Bodø/Glimt - Dinamo Zagreb: Felix Zwayer (GER)
Maccabi Haifa - Crvena zvezda: Clément Turpin (FRA)

Trabzonspor - København: Michael Oliver (ENG)
Benfica - Dynamo Kyiv: Daniel Siebert (GER)
PSV Eindhoven - Rangers: Antonio Mateu Lahoz (ESP)
I’d love to see Mateu in Eindhoven, but isn’t the observer a Spanish?
DeleteA home game for Marciniak, that would be nice :) he has a game on Sunday, and often works on Wednesday’s after a Sunday game. I’m not sure about Turpin - he has a game in Lorient on Sunday. That’s a quite long travel distance. I thought he is mostly off the weekend before an international game?
Orsato is a pretty safe bet in 1st leg, considering he is off in the weekend.
Either Makkelie or Gozubuyuk should fit in somewhere next week. They both work on Saturday. Perhaps the latter gets a game as ‘compensation’ for missing the 3rd round or has a reserve spot. Makkelie works on Saturday in an early game that doesn’t really need him imo, hence I’d bet on him ;)
Mine are
DeleteQarabağ - Viktoria Plzeň: Gözübüyük (van Boekel) / Turpin (Brisard)
Bodø/Glimt - Dynamo Zagreb: del Cerro Grande (Hernandez) / Oliver (Kavanagh)
Maccabi Haifa - Red Star Belgrade: Marciniak (Kwiatkowski) / Mateu (Martinez)
Copenhagen - Trabzonspor: Schärer (Dankert) / Vincic (Irrati)
Dynamo Kyiv - Benfica: Gil Manzano (Martinez) / Siebert (Fritz)
Rangers - PSV Eindhoven: Jovanovic (Fritz) / Kovacs (Valeri)
Those are my 12 names too. The 10 WC refs, plus DCG and Zwayer.
ReplyDeleteAnyone watched Nyberg last night?

ReplyDeleteFerencváros - Shamrock Rovers: Glenn Nyberg (SWE) / François Letexier (FRA)
Pyunik - Sheriff: Alejandro Hernández Hernández (ESP) / Andreas Ekberg (SWE)
Ludogorets - Zalgiris: Ivan Kruzliak (SVK) / Harm Osmers (GER)

Austria Wien - Fenerbahçe: Daniel Siebert (GER) / Jesús Gil Manzano (ESP)

Quite easy to guess the referees for Cl play-offs now. At least, those that don’t have a game in Conference league or Europa league
ReplyDeleteOrsato

Mateu Lahoz
Marciniak
Turpin
Del Cerro Grande
Vincic
Zwayer

Dynamo Kyiv - Benfica: Zwayer (Dankert) / Taylor (Attwell)
Rangers - PSV Eindhoven: Orsato (Irrati) / Kovacs (Fritz)

ReplyDeleteWhat has happened to Eskås? He seems surpassed by Rohit Saggi, who looks like a name on Rosetti’s list now.
