  1. Eszter Urban not included in the first release, but a comment on the blog reported that Hungarian federation announced her about two weeks ago: http://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2022/05/fifa-u-20-womens-world-cup-costa-rica.html

Then, in a CONCACAF trio the experienced Shirley Perello from Honduras (called for U17 in India as VAR / AVAR as well) seems to have replaced Ivette Santiago (CUB).

    1. Also, in the original release, AR Torok was not paired with Lehtovaara, so not sure whether she replaces Kaivova or they just moved ARs around as it happened at the recent Women's Euro?

  2. Serie A appointments for MD1 have been released, Orsato is out as well as his assistant referees, I think we can expect him in CL either on Tuesday or Wednesday: maybe Rangers - PSV.
Massa has a serie B game on Friday (the opener of the tournament), I think he is likely to get a sonorous EL play off.

    1. Yes agree, if he is not assigned in Domestic League, we will probably see him on Tuesday. However, imo the game in Belgrade would be perfect for him ;)

  3. 3 VARs per game in the group stage it seems. Cruz has Borjas, Guzmán and Porras Ayuso in the booth. Offside VAR (FIFA is not fooling anyone with their "AVAR 2" stuff) seems a bit much, but ok.

    1. Are the AVARs published by FIFA?

      Delete
    2. Not that I was able to locate them. FIFA app only lists the main ref. But the info graphics before each game list the whole appointments and we see the VAR room - that is if you can identify the backs of their heads.

  4. Penso just violated the LotG before kick-off by letting the ball girl do the coin toss. IIRC at least, this point was specifically mentioned at our last refereeing briefing.

Interesting: Massey-Ellis, an AR, is AVAR (#1) for Staubli in ESPBRA with Wójs of Poland as the third VAR (AR as Offside VAR).

Apparently, FIFA has prepared some ARs (Massey-Ellis, De Vries, Jermouni, Ho, Fernández) to work as AVARs while non-appointed ARs from the regular trios fill the roles of the offside-vocused VAR. Makes sense, as those mentioned were specifically named as AVARs.

    1. In a quick turn-around, a second group stage assignment for Tess Olofsson. Leaving Amedome (TOG) and Keighley (NZL) as the only referees without a group stage assignment so far.
After observing Olofsson in Costa Rica - Australia. I don't think that she's the best choice for an all-Latin American clash (a "must win" for Mexico). I personally would have preferred Huerta de Aza or even Keighley TBH.

      Delete
    2. @Anoynmous: Thanks for the interesting observation regarding Olofsson. Might I ask if you remember who the VARs for the game were? I would have a look myself, but the FIFA+ "rewatch live streams" are all not functioning it seems....

  12. The most crucial match is Australia v Spain. For Australia it's a "must win" to advance. While Spain just needs a draw. It'll be an interesting test for Gonzalez. Australia plays in an overly physical (outright dirty at times) manner. While Spain is skill, finesse, and football-focused.

    Mexico v Germany
Germany goes through with a draw. But they can finish top of the group depending on the outcome of the other match. For Mexico, it's yet again a "must-win" scenario. Makalima showed a good level in her first game and this is a deserved assignment.

    Colombia v New Zealand
Two teams that have shown to be football-focused. Should be a fairly easy night for Penso. Colombia's skill should be able to overcome the pretty much eliminated Kiwi ladies.

    Costa Rica v Brasil
Yes, it's the host nation (already eliminated) looking for its first win. But honestly, it's a "dead rubber" match for Lehtovaara.

For Wednesday, the standout matches are USA v Japan and France v South Korea.

    1. Huerta de Aza with the most sonorous appointment for the day. An expected assignment (I thought Foster) for a match in which both teams have a lot to play for.

A bit surprised by Amedome (I expected Calderas) getting the "winner advances" South Korea v France match. I wasn't too convinced by the Togolese referee in a fairly easy match. Her foul recognition was suspect at times and as Mikael pointed out, a German player was "under-punished" (only issued a Yellow) for a pretty clear SFP tackle. Her VAR crew also failed her and the game by not intervening.

Calderas and Lee get two "dead rubber" matches to bring the group stage to a close.

  15. Lehtovaara made a mess of an easy match. Mostly due to her poor reading of the game and her poor positioning in and around the penalty box. She had 2 OFRs for obvious handballs that resulted in PKs. The stoppages for VAR to review the incidents did nothing but inflame the already frustrated Costa Ricans. They were further incensed by Lehtovaara's ridiculous, constant, and IMO arrogant "calm down, calm down" hand gestures. None of which would have happened had she positioned herself better and whistled the PKs instantly. The commentators touted her being the Women's Champions League Final referee. But tonight, she was made to look amateurish by these young Latin American teams.
It seems as if she doesn't understand that you can't officiate these U-20 matches like the Women's Euro or the Women's Champions League.

    1. Yes, two very clear handball penalties missed. I seems that Lehtovaara misses football understanding and even basic management skills. We should expect way better performances from the European referees - not very good advertisment for female refereeing.

Both calls were fully "supportable" and more importantly correct. The French goalkeeper is an out-of-control reckless player.
The first PK was a clear case of using excessive force while challenging for the ball.
In the second PK, the GK misses the ball and punches the Japanese player in the head.
Goalkeepers get away with too often get away with too much. I'm glad Calderas and her VAR held the GK accountable for her recklessness.

    2. As we all know, she is a highly experienced, competent, and trusted referee. She would definitely be a logical choice. However, I'm not quite sure what the situation is with Anna-Marie Keighley at this tournament. She was only assigned to one match as the main referee. As the "top gun" of OFC Women's Referees, you would think that she would be the automatic choice to officiate the recently played 2022 OFC Women's Nations Cup Final. But surprisingly she wasn't chosen. The Final went to Shama Maemae from the Solomon Islands.

I must say I like the way he solved it. Maybe it's too much (especially for UEFA approach), but in an Italian clash with strong personalities on the pitch, it can be used, I guess.
Besides, Irrati totally succeeded in warning the players, no more confrontations happened in 1H.

This reminds me of his countryman Collina :D

      Delete
    2. Yes I agree, good performance, second half was a good officiating as well. Only a VAR intervention in first half to disallow a goal scored, for previous handball, but it is quite clear that such incidents are almost impossible to see in most of cases and VAR is there for that. Rocchi will be very happy for this display by Irrati and it seems as he has big trust in his former colleague of many international games...

      Delete
    3. I didn't watch the game, but while surely the ref's manner was a bit more exaggerated than would be ideal (or even necessary?), it seems so obvious (to me!) that the 'juice is worth the squeeze' to have such excellent leaders on the FoP. And, most importantly, it succeeded for the game.

It is a tragedy that Irrati stays in Cat.2/VOR. I know that Chefren reported troubles with his form in Serie A last season, but for me he is actually one of the ≈top five referees in Europe.

    6. I'm shocked about these comments. I see a lot of you still live in the past. You must be one of those old once-I-was-a-referee guys who tell stories about how good was refereeing in the old days. With 3 cameras and 1 slow motion shown. Being laughed at by the new generation. Nobody wants to see a referee pushing players around nowadays.

      Delete
    7. Saying this with all due respect, but I also liked this approach and I'm certainly not old nor did I referee "in the old days". I am a medical doctor by education (used to regularly volunteer at the psychiatry wards during my university education), but I've decided to become a police officer afterwards. Therefore, and again saying with respect, I think I've managed to gain a pretty good grasp of what "managing" different kinds of people, in various situations, really means. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly against any form of unwarranted aggression, anywhere and anytime, however there are certain situations, not only on the FoP, but in everyday life, where the same approach like Irrati's yesterday is the best way to deal with a potentially problematic situation. Not all people are the same, nor different mentalities and cultural backgrounds, but also different situations. Sometimes you need to feel if a certain situation requires a more firm approach, slightly physical if necessary to avoid an all out fight (which is something that always needs to be prevented). The most important thing is to never "cross a line": never resort to swearing, insulting, mocking or any violent and aggressive moves which endanger not only health, but dignity of everyone involved. And Irrati never crossed that line yesterday, IMO.

I apologise to anyone who may find this comment arrogant, overbearing or tedious, that was never my intention. But I've been a regular silent reader of this blog (and the old one) since May 2014 and sometimes I feel we should show more respect towards each other. I respectfully accept anyone's different opinion, however we should definitely try to avoid accusing each other of living in the past just because of an opinion. Again, if anyone feels offended by this, I sincerely apologise.

He missed clear and obvious and harsh foul against Ajax player, then gave YC to one player for dissent and gave to injured player who was down on the pitch for a few minutes and who had to be supstitutioned a minute later. Shameful. He is 5 class under Kuipers.

    2. Sorry, but Makkelie did it excellently. The player walks back into the pitch to lay down there, clearly to slow things down. Simply unacceptable and a clear yellow card. The protesting was way too much, so a correct YC too. After the foul, there was a clear advantage. Makkelie did nothing wrong in the whole situation. He took a stance to the excessive protesting that Ajax is known for, and the unsporting behavior. Finally.

      Delete
    3. You are looking through the Ajax glasses. It was a foul, but Makkelie applied advantage. The player was lying injured outside the field, stands up, walks inside and immediately lay down again, like Tadic did in the Cup final. That is a YC and completely unnecessary cause the game was paused already…

    13. This game requires a bit more context. Utrecht - Ajax is a derby, a tough one. A tensed game, and for Utrecht supporters, the most important game of the Year.

There were a few incidents in the stands: Racism after Brobbey’s goal (although not noticed by the players on the pitch), of course the beer showers, and Makkelie stopped the game for few minutes after a fireworks bomb near the Ajax goalie. Imagine what would have happened if the Utrecht player was sent off with a RC. :D
Honestly I think they probably had to suspend the game permanently. Furthermore, very ugly football, many duels, a physical game. Not Makkelie’s best game for sure, but at the same time: a referee can’t really win here, and imagine Higler in charge… I doubt he would be able to keep control for 90 minutes :)

      Delete
    14. None of the players seem to have noticed the racism during the game, so can’t blame Makkelie for not dealing with it either, he probably didn’t notice it. However, a high probability of crowd escalation shouldn’t be a reason for not showing a RC - this game could have turned around with an Utrecht goal which would mean that Ajax have a tough game because Makkelie (VAR) is afraid of the crowd

      Delete
    15. Don’t understand your last sentence tbh. Yes, one Utrecht goal could chance anything, but that was never going to happen if their player was sent off in ‘54? With 11 men, Utrecht made only one attempt on goal in 90 minutes :)
And imo Makkelie is the best Dutch referee in heated matches, by miles. Today was a very ugly game, physical duels for 90 minutes, almost no attempts on goal - for me a referee can’t win in that case.

      Delete
    16. The chances of Utrecht gaining something would be close to 0 with 10 men, but in the 54th minute you cannot say that it won’t happen with 11 men. In hindsight it didn’t matter, but in the moment itself the RC has to be given and the possibility of shouldn’t be taken into account. If this was actually considered I would even say the referee responsible for this reasoning should be suspended

      Delete
    17. A referee can always make mistakes. The most important thing is that the mistake doesn’t impact the outcome of the match.

    1. Yes, looks like intentionally. I don't know if the 4th official, saw anything!

    2. I would love to be able to say that this was only an accident, however there certainly was an intentional movement of the shoulder towards the referee just before the imminent collision. What's more, James did nothing to avoid the collision, and, unlike the referee, he was perfectly aware of the whole situation. There is also a certain feeling of frustration by the player, he even decided to "give an attidute" after the collision.

Saying all this, I don't know what I would have done in Attwell's place without the help by the FO, given the lack of any evidence by the referee. However, if the FO had deemed it an intentional contact, although there is no real force, I would have loved to see a RC. There is NO excuse for shoving a referee nor for any other type of aggressive behaviour against the match officials.

DOGSO but player receiving ball in offside position.

    1. What is the procedure for dealing with such a situation? Melero Lopez changes his decision from advantage, point to goal and turns into offside. Isn't it that with distance of more than 2 meters (clear offside), AR can immediately raise his flag? No cooperation with his AR. Hopefully other than that he is ok, the referee really looked bad in that incident.

    2. For me, it's a YC for the GK, because the player in offside position could not score a goal (so no DOGSO)

  44. Very, very interesting situation in Espanol-Real in 94’. Goal was annuled due to offside, but VAR intervenied because GK kicked Real player outside the box. Was there open foot play before the foul??? Was Real player in full control of the ball and in obvious goal scoring oportunity so the foul is worth of a RC?

    1. The teammate who was offside would have made the exact same thing if they foul never occured. So, no Dogso. The teammate would have been offside either way. The fouled player would’t score instead of him.

  45. Simone Sozza tonight just had a MASTERCLASS performance. It’s a shame he is not FIFA-Listed. Hope he will be in january: is this possible, Chefren?

We can't exclude other changes in the Italian list.

Here you have full situation including OFR. IMO he fulfilling all the criteria for a DOGSO so intervention of VAR is correct. What i didn't like is the poor management of Mario Lopez. Going back to the monitor after showing a RC for GK in a situation where nobody on the pitch understood why he gave it was not good to see it.

    1. Incorrect red card. Se already know the other attacker was offside and would have ruined the goal. So therefore where is the DOGSO? The teammate would have taken the ball and Bern offside if the foul didn’t occure, not the attacker who got fouled. Yellow for reckless kick…

  47. You made me laugh :) what kind of logic is that. Hope you're not a referee but a football fans instead. You're guessing all the time. He would do this than this than this one.

    1. Clear DOGSO, to be honest a very good referee, once received the communication about offside, would have detected at least the previous foul with possible RC by himself, but maybe nowadays in VAR times, this is too much...

  48. Mmm I really don’t like the OFR in the PSG game. IMO player is looking for a contact and not the other way around. I guess referees/VMO’s in Ligue1 “fear” the PSG president :/

    1. Full clip? :)
In this clip you don’t see an important detail: referee talked to Rensch shortly before he decided to crawl inside the lines.

    2. It’s very simple. Player was fouled and is injured, but there was a nice advantage - Ajax players could play ball outside but they decided to continue the attack (and had a chance to score). Then another player was fouled, Makkelie whistled, stopped the game and went to Rensch to check on him, but he wouldn’t pause the game for a treatment because Rensch was outside the FoP and should get a treatment outside the lines. I assume that Ajax/Rensch didnt want to continue with 10 waiting for Rensch’ treatment and therefore, he decided to crawl inside the FoP. This has NOTHING to do with beer.

    3. Absolutely agree, N. Very nice and precise summary of events.

    4. Rensch was lying outside the FoP for at least one minute. A few seconds after Makkelie checked him, he crawled inside the FoP. And still, the local broadcaster, journalists, and even the coach said it was because of the beer shower and YC was wrong :)

Ajax will be a tricky team to officiate in the UCL..

    5. Sorry, but since when throwing beer to a player is acceptable for a referee????? i'm quite sure iff the beer is thrown to one off Makkelie's assistants and he gets a beer over him, the game will be suspended, so why with a player it's acceptable??

      Delete
    6. Who says throwing beer is acceptable? The YC issued to Rensch has nothing to do with whether or not throwing beer is acceptable. It’s a result of Rensch’ unsporting behaviour.

      Delete
    7. There was thrown beer already before Rensch was show a yellow card... so the referee should have stopped the game before! i agree Rensch deserved that yellow card, but what worries me is that the referee doesn't take any action against that throwing off beer, referees should be much stricter with this disgusting behavior off so called "supporters", even monkeysounds where made to Brobbey when he scored the 0-2, why this is tolerated, and why Makkelie didn't immediatly stop the game! This shit must be over, now and forever! and clubs who let this asholes in, should be punished with fines, and loose points, and even relegated till this finally stop!

      Delete
    8. @Eric, if Brobbey himself didn't hear the sounds (at least he said so after the game) and many other players didn't hear it, you shouldn't blame Makkelie for not taking any action as there's no reason to assume he heard it - there's a lot of valid criticism towards Makkelie regarding this game but this and the YC against Rensch shouldn't be part of said criticism

      Delete
    9. Makkelie in my opinion was very weak, and tolerated way to much disgusting behavior off the Utrecht supporters! Referees should stop the game immediatly iff they see supporters start throwing beer, thats the only way to stop this! Fc Utrecht Boss Van Someren stated already before the game..,. that he was worried about the behavior off the supporters, and he was right! KNVB tuchtcomissie should make some statements as well, throwing beer (shown on camera's or reported by referees should meen 3 points less, a fine, and a 4 weeks no supporters off that club in the stadium, enough is enough!

  50. I do agree 100% with N.
If I remember well, a treatment is not allowed on the field of play (of course except heavy enjury, concussion, etc.)
But we all know how it works in practice. The time of a faked injury depends on the score at that mment.
The same with behavior of ball boys/girls. The speed of giving the ball depends on the score. Goal keeper tells to ball/boy to give the ball very quickly ... or not. Sometimes goalkeeper walks slowly to corner flag to collect the ball.
IMO, very great job by Makkelie !

    1. True. Although this wasn’t a fake injury - but for a referee almost impossible to estimate when an injury is real or fake, and in this case, Rensch should’ve stayed outside the FoP and wait for the fysio. Now he used his injury to either waste time or he wanted to stop the game to avoid that his team had to continue with 10.

  51. In UCL Ajax is in group with Italian and British teams. So, I predict it will be mainly Spanish and French referees. They better be prepared.

    1. Even more so Germans, as they are only eligible for 3 groups

    2. Yes, fair point. I forgot about that. It’s like the Spanish last year - very limited!

  52. What a discussion about an ordinary situation and a correct decision. Makkelie does everything right here, but because it's Ajax, his decision is questioned. Ajax has been playing with unsportsmanlike behavior for quite some time and Makkelie is the only one (in the Netherlands) who dares to be unpopular by acting against this. Well done!

  53. About Sozza: the key episodes from the match are featured in the official short highlights video below.

    https://youtu.be/DWZpX4efkmo

Penalty: should be a defensive freekick IMO, but given that UEFA assessed SVKESP as clear pen + intervention, it seems that I'm in a minority here of finding such penalties rather unsatisfying; the holding in a following clip is much more of an offence for me!
SYC no.1: correct for reckless striking (player know opponent was coming there and raised his elbow)
SYC no.2: clear VC IMO, I guess rather RAP8 though
Offside: fascinating case of the new laws in action! And being used correctly as I understand them.

Would be - as ever - interested in other users' thoughts! :)
(on Sozza specifically: I watched this referee before and I am by far less convinced of him than others...)

  54. From a serie B game, Palermo - Ascoli, another perfect example of new guidelines about offside.
    https://streamable.com/jlhq1d
Here, offside (detected live by AR) because defender tried to play ball in that manner, not in full control of his body and so deflection (not a deliberate play). Before the change, the intention of playing ball by making such movements would have been enough to consider this as deliberate action.

  55. OT: Does anybody know if Hategan has fully recovered after the heart attack ? Will he be back on the pitch during the season ?

    1. No official anouncement was made yet. There were about a month ago so unconfirmed rumours in press that he decided to remain only as VAR. So far, he was VAR in every single matchday(7) in Romanian Superliga, except in the last one for some reasons. On the other hand, he was at the Refereeing Course in Frankfurt in July. I heard that doctors gave their ok so Hațegan can be back on the pitch. But it is up to him if he will want to take that very small risk that comes with the decision to come back. We'll see.

  56. OT: Again interesting newd from Croatia. One game exchange agreed with Bulgarian FA, talented young referee Ante Culina from Croatia will officiate a game Spartak Varna - CSKA Sofia, and Bulgarian ref RADOSLAV GIDZHENOV is delegated for Croatian league clash Varazdin - Gorica

  57. OT question:
The referees that failed the LOTG- or condition tests: is their 2022 international season over (no assignments in group stage)?

    1. No, they’ll have (or already had, I don’t know) the chance to do a retest. When passing I’d think they can be appointed again in UCL/UEL/UECL GS.

  58. Penalty given by Daniel Jesus Trujillo Suarez at Granada - Villareal B.
IMO is a clear simulation, attacker is falling down before the contact with GK and i think an OFR is a must.

    1. Fully agree, clear simulation. Classic attempt to deceive the referee, unfortunately it paid off here. IMHO, VAR should definitely send this for an OFR.

  59. A really poor missed foul in the 24' of Valencia/Atletico by Cuadra Fernandez. VAR had to send it down to wipe out a fantastic goal and then he has to caution both managers during the OFR. All could have been prevented had he, the 4th, or AR1 gotten an obvious foul called live.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Later an OFR in 41' to downgrade a RC for DOGSO into a YC for SPA, plain wrong intervention to me, RC wasn't a clear and obvious mistake at all, actually it was the optimal call IMO.

      Delete
    2. He didn't help himself by getting out of position by standing and pointing at an obviously clean tackle while an OGSO is happening at the other end.

We do seem to be seeing a continual shift away from DOGSO. I would have been fine with this staying as a red too.

      Delete
    3. I thought this was similar to the one in conference league at Koln, where Martins deemed it as DOGSO!?
I don't know why VAR didn't support Cuadra.
