  1. Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, from Category 3 not so many months ago, to 2023 FIFA Women's WC? :) Incredible path, just want to underline that this wouldn't have been possible without the abolishment of Category 3. We can say that among three other UEFA referees that attended EURO, she will surely have a big opportunity to learn. Indeed, an Under 17 is the right tournament for doing that.

    1. Well done to the obvious favoritism of the "refereeing maffia" from italy. If she was from any other country she wouldnt have had a chance. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth again. But of course this blog is turning a blind eye to that (again.)The only thing i hope is that shes up to the task.

    2. I don’t think it’s an Italy issue but rather a ‘big federation’ issue. If England, France, Spain or Germany didn’t have a female Elite referee, one of their first category refs would have been called up

    3. This is strange. I think Colina will habe one from italy.

  2. Congratulations to Canadians Myriam Marcotte and Carol Anne Chenard in being selected. These ladies continue to be representing Canada on the highest stages.

    3. You are correct. However, he may be asking about match assignments.

  4. Worthy of note that only three VARs are male (all of them from AFC - Al-Ali, Hattab and Pu-udom), the remaining 13 VARs are female.

  5. Demetrescu, Martincic and Welch have at least one different AR than at the recent Women's Euro... are they selected as trios or FIFA is still trying to find out combinations that work for them?

    1. Maybe they think, that Iugulescu, Rodak and Massey have enough experience / are tested well enough.
Similar to the more experienced referees.

    2. Unless to only invoke Politics, you have no argues... so you say these referees are selected only by politics and they have no skills to be chosen. It's always the same speech...bitterness ? you should be candidate to be chairman of committee, i'd be glad to know your vision and management.

    3. Not only Massey, but also Rashid, who is less experienced, is missing from Welch's trio, who is going with two new ARs.

    4. Will there be another FIFA selection tournament after this year's WU20and WU17 or these will be the last tests for WWC23?

  6. Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi is now a Serie A-B ref in Italy : she's quite a professional ref... I think that a U17 Women WC wouldn't be to difficult for her...

    1. I conclude that Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi has a higher ranking in Italy than Monzul (Serie C list in Italy)

  8. Very happy to see Carol Anne Chenard back again (in the role as VAR) after she was being diagnosed with a severe decease three years ago.

    2. She had a successful Concacaf Women's Championship and works regularly as VAR in MLS.

    3. I wouldn't categorize her performance in the tournament as a success. She had a Chris Kavanagh moment (ITA v FRA) in the USA-Haiti match. Sadly, unlike UEFA where they correctly and justifiably demoted Kavanagh. The CONCACAF Referee Committee didn't have the guts to do the same with Chenard.

    4. Concacaf appreciated her VAR intervention and assigned her further matches.

  9. I am not a South American expert, but after she was removed from a top women's competition last year by CONMEBOL due to issues in Uruguay, it is hard to believe she could return at the top. As we could see, her compatriot Fernandez already replaced her in CONMEBOL and now FIFA competitions.

  10. Still no news about the super cup. Some names that are not assigned in any competition:

Oliver, Gözübüyük, Kružliak (?), Meler, Orsato.

    - Meler is possible as 4th official, but he was reported injured in the other post - can someone confirm whether correct?
    - Oliver's AR is assigned to cup game on the 9th. He always works with Bennett in UEFA games. UEFA wants a fixed team for finals, don't they.
    - Other options: a referee that had a game this week, as a "final test". Last year, Karasev was also assigned to a game in the 3rd round before the Supercup. Soares Dias is a name that comes into mind. VAR Martins was also very reliable during EURO Womens. Does anybody know if Soares Dias has a domestic game next weekend?
    - Some readers noticed that Gözübüyük was suddenly replaced by Makkelie in 3rd round CL, however he is assigned in the Dutch domestic league, therefore I'm presuming he has no personal issues (e.g. covid, a failed condition test, etc). There should be a logical explanation. I don't exclude the possibility that Gözübüyük has a role in Finland. Maybe as 4th official... I don't see him as CR tbh.
    - Other options: a female referee (but not Monzul or Frappart)
    - An experienced and sound name like Orsato. Or Cakir or even Makkelie as 'compensation' for what happened last season.

  11. Kruzliak is the referee for Sturm Graz - Dynamo Kyiv on 9th August. Orsato is such a big one that I can’t consider him for this match, and I think would be too early for Meler to get this kind of games.

IMO, Oliver seems the best name for the Super Cup, experienced and never in charge of a European final so far… but I do not really think Committee will choose a referee from the WC list.

My ‘safe’ guess would be Oliver.
My ‘meritocratic’ guess would be Soares Dias as a prize for last year good performances.
    My ‘political’ guess is Gozubuyuk.

    1. UEFA goes safe!
Oliver + Polish VAR were an easy guess
The reports about Bennett were just sand in our eyes :)
