Two poor decision already in the prem friday night games, Gillet somehow not producing a red for DOGSO, and a potential leg breaker not even given as a free kick by Harrington
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Jarred Gillett correctly assessed the SPA v DOGSO incident in the 27th minute. Covering defenders and the ball played slightly to the sideline make it SPA.
DeleteVideo: https://dubz.co/v/dw4m3j
There was also a penalty area incident in the 31st minute of the game. Quite blatant shirt pulling. Enough for VAR intervention?
Video: https://dubz.co/v/3c8n2p
I was disappointed by the overall handling of the game by Jarred though. Too much in the background, weak management of unsporting behaviours like delaying the restart, cynical fouls on GKs, mobbing, dissent or confrontation. Not a real leader on the pitch today.
And here is the mentioned potential SFP incident from the Aston Villa FC vs Southampton FC game:
Deletehttps://dubz.co/v/zc7waf
@Euro Soccer Ref I'm posting full clips (with replay) of possible DOGSO and SFP
DeleteJarred Gillett SPA/DOGSO

IMO this is a RC. The same IDENTICALLY clip we can find also in UEFA Rap and decision in RC for DOGSO
Harrington SFP ?
https://streamable.com/5tqmvq
Reckless for me because of low intensity also supportable call in case of RC. The main problem here is the referee didn't whistle for a foul and to show YC
Oh, I don't know why dubz.co shortened the clips, I cut them in full... Thanks for spotting it and helping with new clips, Anthony.
DeleteGillett SPA/DOGSO: I agree with Anthony here, DOGSO for my taste, I'm not sure the defender would have time to intervene here. DOGSO RC, IMO.
DeleteHarrington: RC for SFP IMO. The offender hit him with studs on the shin, high above the ankle, and I personally think intensity is high enough to justify a RC. Definitely more preferable than YC for me. I also have to agree with the commentator, the offender completely missed the ball, he was so far from it that the whole situation looks a bit deliberate to me. One more reason for RC.

DeleteI agree in general, but
Deletea) as in CL, quite hard to find suitable games for all 4 Spanish Elite referees
b) it's not a fixed rule, e.g. also two Spanish referees for the two legs of Netherlands against Montenegro in WC qualifiers.
for my taste, as in CL are to many Spanish/Italian teams involved, there also are to many referees from Italy, and Spain in Elite, that's makes problems with appointments, find some good referees from other country's and give them some chance, 2 elite referees per country is more than enough!
DeleteOT: I'd like to put it on the record that I was *completely* wrong about UEFA's instructions to the referees at their summer course; indeed it was completely different to what I'd imagined/outlined on the blog. 'UEFA22' stuff is over! I haven't been able to watch thaaat much CL this season, but the approaches of the refs that I've seen was full of common-sense and the level was overall really high - impressions chimed by others who have watched more matches than I have. It is very important never to be become too ideological/dogmatic (and too cynical!) in one's approach. Much praise to UEFA refereeing corps from my end.
ReplyDeleteDid someone hack Mikael’s account?
DeleteKidding :)
What matches did you watch?
:)
DeleteSporting vs. Tottenham, Marseille vs. Frankfurt, Rangers vs. Napoli and some parts of Liverpool vs. Ajax, Atlético Madrid vs. Porto, Viktoria Plzeň vs. Inter.
wow I can't believe my eyes... Mikael is that really you :)
DeleteHaha :D
DeleteWhat did you mean by UEFA 22 is over?
DeleteBlink twice if you're kidnapped.
DeleteBrilliant Taylor till now at Wolves vs M. City. Letting the game flow, playing advantage as much as possible. And showing a direct RC for a blatant SFP
ReplyDeletePoor performance from Taylor (who lives in Manchester). Lots of decisions in favour of the team from Manchester. The red was correct but other decisions have been poor.
DeleteThat's nonsense, telling he is poor without mentioning none single situation, i challenge you, tell us one of that "lots of decisions"
DeleteAnonymous 14:58 what an insulting comment, him being from Manchester is utterly irrelevant, what exactly has he done wrong - he’s a top elite referee who you accuse of bias towards a team from which he’s from the location is so stupid
DeleteIn my opinion, and I know not many persons will agree on this, this RC is harsh. Not wrong, but YC would have fit better. Collins wants to plays the ball, misses it and then touches Grealish. But not with excessive force. You can also see he retracts his leg when he sees he will miss the ball, and he doesn't come in with a straight leg. It's just clumsy and blunt.
Delete@Anonymous 15:07 seriously is a harsh RC ?
Deletehttps://streamable.com/sv5y6z
I didn’t accuse him of bias - merely stated a fact.
DeleteSorry but how can that be harsh the way he goes into tackle is not to clear the ball or he wouldn’t have gone into the challenge with a karate kick move
DeleteThat is the prime example of the "nigel the Jong" Kong fu kick. Webb gave only a yellow back at the WC final, but we saw what a disastrous performance that turned out to be. This RC is totally right
DeleteAnonymous 14:58, are you a Chelsea fan?
DeleteAnonymous 15:07,
have you seen the clip? There's no way to say it's a harsh red card, if you've seen the clip and it still says it's too harsh, I'm sorry I thought you were blind. It is very reckless for Wolves players to take the ball with a very high foot start, if we don't want to call it a karate kick. He should have known the risk when he missed (miscalculated) and it was clear whether it was reckless or clumsy or not, it was 100% RC.
Anonymous 15:22
It's not a fact, sorry your analysis is just like the opinion of Wolves fans who are only trying to defend their team players without objectivity, absolutely nonsense.
I haven't watched the game, but speaking only about this particular incident, it literally screams "RC for SFP" for me. Also, VAR intervention required in case of any other decision, IMO.
DeleteTwo potential violent conducts in the Real Valladolid CF vs Cádiz CF game. Should there have been VAR intervention(s)?
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/8jgs6y

A question to Belgians, what is Serge Gumienny doing and why he didn't become UEFA observer?
ReplyDeleteGood decision Simon hooper, foul on the line therefore penalty, missed yellow card though. Foul in build him good advantage could of had a yellow card as well.
ReplyDeleteWrong penalty call given by Makkelie even after OFR?
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer a penalty here. Attacker jumps to avoid severe impact (and possible injury) of the clumsy tackle by the defender, but is still impeded.
DeleteClip https://twitter.com/Pietje72539728/status/1571177681273688065?t=fx-K9WeM5o3a9v4ZhTfctw&s=19
DeleteFor me not a penalty. Makkelie not having his best season so far
Other angle clip
Deletehttps://twitter.com/siekobos/status/1571172994050936839?t=9FGMasAlCQaLkrvbRUrt4g&s=19
I can follow both arguments. Contact is minimal, but if player doesn’t jump it’s a stonewall RC (flying leg studs up), so defender takes a very big risk.
Delete@Hans 19:07
DeleteThat is your opinion after one Ajax game? :)
Imo Makkelie did very well in both UCL play-offs and in Munchen.
I don't understand why there is discussion about this. It's a really dumb tackle of the Groningen defender, who doesn't play the ball. If the Sparta player doesn't jump, he breaks his ankle. IMO crystal clear penalty and good that Makkelie stays with his decision.
Delete+1
DeleteIn my opinion, his whistling in the CL Tuesday was not very convincing either. I'm also tired of reading Ajax references from anonymous commenters every time. I am on this blog because I have a passion for refereeing and enjoy sharing and reading opinions. And to watch and share clips of interesting moments. I hope from now on to be able to have discussions on the subject here.
DeleteHe already explained his decision in the interview after the match
DeleteIMO a correct PK. Although the contact is light (shin), the high speed and the leg up makes this clear impeding. Why only a foul if they player is injured or brake his leg? It’s normal that he jumps to avoid the contact and then can a small contact be enough to fall. Even the coach and the player said in their interview that they understand the decision and that the defender should be smarter. I just think that Makkelie should give also a YC for this reckless tackle.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
Delete@Hans If you’re tired of references to your Ajax bias you should comment more objective in general. It really is too obvious and that’s why people make these references.
DeleteThen, please elaborate on your opinion of Makkelie’s game in Munich last Tuesday. Why was it unconvincing in your opinion?
Clear as day penalty. The tackle was reckless, studs high, even with the attacker managing to jump over the defender he kicked his knee still. Had the attacker not jumped it would have been a red card to the defender and season over for the attacker. One camera angle in particular showed the contact to the knee. Correct call from Makkelie but the VAR should not have intervened, imo. The defender accepted it was the right call & that he should not have made the tackle. The manager of the losing team accepted it was a penalty and the only fault was with his player who was wrong to make the tackle.
DeleteHooper changed his decision after complaints from leictser. Foul was right decision but he originally gave the foul then after complaints he awarded a free kick- don’t look like a confident referee
ReplyDeletefull clip of penalty given by Makkelie. I guess by putting his hand on the waist after he saw the images tell us that he was not happy with that OFR
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/gdq2j3
PS: if it possible can someone translate what commentator is saying
In serie A we had a particular incident some seasons ago involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Meret (Napoli - Juventus, 2019). A red card was issued for DOGSO by Rocchi.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZxsEnT1YC0
Same as the incident involving the penalty whistled by Makkelie today: minimal contact or even no contact, but only because of jump by player. VAR Irrati at that time supported the decision but there were big discussions, for the head of refereeing, the decision was correct because the attacker had been impeded in his action, and a player is not forced to jump, so a foul in very particular cases can even be assessed as "potential" (but one must be sure that without actions by opponent, the dangerous contact is clear).
I can see the point of view by VAR, but I think it should be accepted as decision, more generally there should be guidelines for such very particular cases, maybe rare to happen, but surely part of football.
I think that VAR whould have backed referee in this case, but the speech is complex, I think now they will discuss about what happened.
And yes, given that there are people considering this penalty correct, the intervention should be assessed as wrong also for this reason.
Makkelie said after the game in an interview that he saw a contact on the field, that's probably why VAR intervened, as the images couldn't prove the contact. However, Makkelie kept his decision as he also couldn't prove that there wasn't any contact
DeleteMakkelie explained it very well and wasn’t unhappy about the OFR. I think it was good to sell the decision, at the end of the game.
DeleteEven the coach accepted the decision after the game - defender shouldn’t make a reckless tackle like that, it’s completely unnecessary and dumb. You can see there is some contact at 0:45 (knee): https://streamable.com/gdq2j3
The attacker does make use of the contact/leg, but if he doesn’t jump he could end the match injured. So I can understand both arguments.
+1
DeletePlayer Ter Wierik was very honest on TV. He said there was a light contact and I shouldn’t make this kind of tackles. I have to avoid the possibility that the referee can blow the whistle for foul. Really fair of him.
DeleteWhat game did Makkelie work
DeleteSparta Rotterdam - FC Groningen, quite a low profile game for him
DeleteI have to say I like this penalty decision, the reasons were already explained by other users. Also, unnecessary OFR for me, but I fully agree with Chefren about the need for better guidelines and education about these particular incidents, especially because they don't happen too often and therefore create confusion like in this incident.
DeleteDutch referee Freek Arjen van Herk is making a name for himself in Norway: One of their new top talents.
ReplyDeleteHappy for him, he was not so good in Holland. Think he has a Norwegian girlfriend and moved there, little bit like Madley.
DeleteHis contract was not renewed and he never got the chance in Eredivisie, he struggled in Eerste divisie.
DeletePassive approach type of referee, he tried to be tough sometimes but mostly with problems because it was not natural and wrong situations chosen.
I still don't see the potential of Van der Eijk. Lost the control completely in the first half of RKC-Cambuur. Two justified RC's, but a shame that he didn't see the second one live. Hope to find some clips.
ReplyDeletePenalty RKC (see video) really, really soft and IMO wrong VAR intervention. Cambuur coach received a red card after some (IMO justified protests). Not the behaviour a referee must have.
https://twitter.com/siekobos/status/1571205913175904256
Van der Eijk is a typical ‘law enforcer’ imo. Card happy, not afraid to make to make that unpopular call. Sometimes, the issued RC or 2YC’s are a bit too soft in my eyes (not this time though! :D).
DeleteJoey Kooij used to officiate like Vd Eijk (many soft RC), but since last season I noticed that he managed his games much better now than 2-3 years ago; tries to solve situations with personality instead of cards (and rightly so).
Four red cards already… He is not feeling the game very well.
DeleteI don't see any mistake by Van der Eijk, 2 red cards, and a 3th red for the coach all justified in my opinion, and also not light red cards, but full dark red cards, those kind off fouls can give real injuries, and bring health of the players in danger! Those cards in my opinion have nothing to do with feeling the game...people who are saying those kind of nonsense probably never refereed a match themself!
DeleteThe penalty was wrong. And the ref card of the coach was a result of that! He called him a coward..
DeleteEric, I agree about the RC's. But the penalty is rather wrong, and so is the RC for the coach because he didn't even insult the ref.
DeleteWe can not descide about the red card for the coach.....iff Van der Eijk feels insulted by calling him a coward, he is allowed to show a red card, and also look at the behavior off the coach...only for that shouting.... you can give a red card for my taste!
DeleteI will try and find the clip from Hibs-Aberdeen in Edinburgh and although I support Aberdeen I just don’t understand this decision to give a penalty and SYC for what should’ve been a foul for headlock and pull of shirt by the Hibs attacker
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/mark_robertson9/status/1571154230789931011?s=46&t=8VWnNZ8-DpeX5oKcHcEAgQ
DeleteNot the best footage/best angles but it’s all I can find other that the full incident on BBC sportscene
DeleteNo, the referee gave a penalty against the team in red and gave the defender a SYC
DeleteOT: If anyone can post clips from two Bundesliga matches, I'd be very grateful. There have been two potential SFP situation this matchday where YCs were given. The first situation has already been confirmed as correctly solved by VAR boss Jochen Drees. I'd be very interested in your opinion as we've seen RCs for situations like that in UEFA matches before.
ReplyDelete49' in Mainz-Hertha (YC stays after OFR)
53' in Stuttgart-Eintracht (YC, no OFR)
Mainz-Hertha https://streamable.com/ax13u2
ReplyDeleteStuttgart-Eintracht https://streamable.com/tndh2q
IMO they are both SFP.
About the first one, maybe one could argue that he played the ball first but in LOTG getting the ball first has no relation to whether it's a foul or not.
You were quicker, Anthony! :D
Deletehttps://streamable.com/xrnxt3
https://streamable.com/qn2rma
hahaha yep :)
DeleteMy opinion:
Delete1) I am not at all a fan of red cards for such actions. The Berlin player plays the ball in a relatively normal way and without particularly high risk. The health hazard arises primarily from the Mainz player's action, who comes too late (for the ball) and runs into the Hertha player's movement.
But yes, if you were to look at intensity and hit pattern in isolation only, it would be more red.
And regarding LotG, I would say, that playing the ball can make a difference to decide whether it was excessive force or not. There is no doubt though, that this was a foul, because in the end he kicks his opponent at least carelessly.
The VAR intervention is therefore unjustified because yellow is the better decision.
2) I find this scene much more red than 1), because he doesn't play the ball normally but in a dangerous way. And the ball is only lightly touched, the movement is primarily against the opponent. For me in the borderline area regarding VAR intervention, but at least more red than yellow.
1) Partially agree with Philipp here, in the sense that intensity and hitting point, considering isolatedly, definitely point to a RC. However, I cannot be sure that Mainz player is mostly to blame here, there is a certain degree of recklessness in a way the Berlin player acts. Therefore, I would agree with Anthony about this being more SFP than not, so a RC, however I'm not sure about the VAR intervention. Considering Philipp's points, it's rather wrong, as we can see there are arguments for a YC, so it's not a clear and obvious situation.
Delete2) RC for SFP, IMO. Reasons are explained by Philipp very well. However, I would like to see a VAR intervention here, as it's a pretty clear case of SFP for me, especially considering the last replay.

ReplyDeleteControversial winning goal for Benfica in entertaining game at Ibrox. Cross from right appeared caught by goalkeeper on line / under bar and AR2 (from Poland, with Croatian referee) immediately flagged for a goal, which wasn't apparent, but uefa.com gave it as own goal
ReplyDeleteQuite challenging night for Frida Nielsen in Arsenal. I did not watch the full game so this is only a couple of situations from second half. (Timestamps from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCRcrX61ovc)
ReplyDelete9.20: Possible Penalty rejected - possibly in cooperation with AR1. Seems to be a missed penalty for a tripping offense.
10.00: Penalty for Arsenal. Difficult to spot the actual offense and whether it is inside the box. Referee seems quite in decisive - maybe in cooperation with AR1. From the material available the decision should be supported.
19.00: Correct YC - SPA (20.12 - Using spray for attacking player seems unnecessary)
24.00: Correct YC for Ajax player.
37.40: Correct onside decision prior to goal for Ajax.
43.30: Wrong offside decision by AR1 - rejected goal.
