    1. You can easily understand that by checking the couple of VAR - AVAR appointed together and reserved in the other games, later maybe I can write the list for this round (I did that for previous round).

Real Betis (ESP) - Ludogorets (BUL)

  8. So it is time to understand more about Norwegian refereeing for Rosetti. Can Eskas make a big step? We will see...
Debut in Men's competition for Karolin Kaivoja, after Porras Ayuso.
After Eskas, Glova and Stegemann to follow with the most important observers.

  9. Could Stegemann with such an important observer be a hint for a potential promotion to Elite in 2023? After the retirement from Aytekin, there could be a spot for another German. For sure he would be the frontrunner among the German category 1 refs.

    1. It's probably a head to head race between Stegemann and Osmers. Domestically, Stegemann has the better development with a fair share of big games last season including the cup final. But on UEFA level, Osmers had the superior appointments so far (U21 Euros, youth League grand final). Today's appointment is the first opportunity for Stegemann to surpass Osmers internationally as well.

Realistically, only one of them will ever get promoted to Elite because once Zwayer/Stieler retire, Jablonski and Schlager will be the front runners.

  10. No Hernandez Hernandez, so the penalty area incident in Naples was not worthy of an OFR according to UEFA, what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correct, should never have been a penalty.

      Delete
    2. It is strange, though: I remember that Hernandez did not disallowed an offside goal in Borussia Dortmund-Lazio (a far more serious mistake than the one he made in Napoli) and UEFA did not punish him

  11. Great game for Glova, Eskas..

  12. Final chance for Eskas: There must be a discussion in the committee whether to push him or leave him to the fate of Schüttengruber, Aghayev, Bebek, Kehlet, Vad, Stavrev, Boyko, i.e. "standard" Cat 1 or even less, and instead push for Saggi, who is coming fast.

  13. Petrescu with a Roma match is something I did not expect after the mess he made in Twente-Fiorentina.

  14. I think it could be a tough game for Kulbakov in Rennes, watching how the French teams supporters have behaved recently, as well as the fact that Fenerbahce is not an easy team for any referees.

    2. Attwell with Hatizdakis would make more sense. Kavanagh and Coote in Monaco

      Delete
    3. He also officiates Manchester United in the Premier League, so I don't see the specific problem. It would, for instance, be weird for Siebert to be VAR in the UEL-group of Union Berlin as he doesn't officiate them in the Bundesliga, but since this isn't a restriction in England it shouldn't be one in Europe I think

      Delete
    4. No but you wouldn't put Taylor/ Oliver in charge of this game, so why have English VAR's?

      Delete
  18. I think Rohit Saggi and Juxhin Xhaja will not only stand as FO, but also as triggers for Eskas and Jorgji.

    ReplyDelete

    1. What do you mean? That it's intentional to have the "rival" as FO?

      Delete
    2. obviously, the appointed FO is their main rival, if they fail the test, especially for Eskas

      Delete
  19. David Coote as a VAR god help Eskas, he is completely useless.

  21. Remarkable that UEFA sends De Bleeckere to Turkey after the incidents after Turkey - Switzerland in 2005. I know: There have been 17 years since that match and one cannot blame the Belgian for what has happened. But I still remember newspapers reporting that everyone had to run for his life and that also De Bleeckere was all in tears.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Who do we think was planned for Arsenal? Maybe Hernandez with de Burgos as VAR? Or Rumsas, who also could have been the first choice for Copenhagen?

  23. Elite and 1st category refs not selected so far?

  24. Bebek continuosly does not get any Conf.League or EL matches.

It's safe to say that with 45 years old his international, european and maybe even overall career is over.

Shame, whenever it seemed he was rising he had some controversial moments and games that he could not recover from.

I can think of 3 big matches that he flopped and that were key in his career:

    1)
When he joined Elite,he was given Real -Shakhar match.
We all saw big mistake in that match, awarding penalty to Real by wrongly punishing handball, when in fact, ball kicked player's back.

    2)
Famous Braga night, where all of Turkey turned against him, again wrongly judging PK in favour of Braga, losing control of game and disgusting behaviour from Fener side towards him.

    3)
This was least controversial but still, after it seemed that he has recovered from Braga night,he was in top form, had streak of good matches.

He was then given Celtic-Lazio,pretty big match for him if you ask me.
He did not give RC for shocking challenge in that match and after that ,I think he never again gained comitte's trust and that's why we saw and we're seeing his career fade away.

It's just sad to see him just as 4th official, even in Croatia he can't get big matches because of some controversial stuff that he said about HNK Hajduk.

Now he has to settle to being referee in some mid level matches in Croatia while some other Croatian refs are being forced maybe too much by Croatian FA,like Jovic(he's born in ZG,so he will never get Dinamo match)Strukan,Pajac,Culina,Kolaric and others.
Just sad to see ref who had so much potential go down that hard.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just a small correction, Jović was appointed for Dinamo matches against clubs from Zagreb multiple times.

I still expect Bebek to get at least one UECL appointment, but it is true that he was pushed to the margin very quickly. The issue with current politics is IMO that they are pushing new referees so much, not even based on performances. I remember few years ago when Damir Batinic was in amazing form, experienced referee in the end of his career, and he got many big appointments based in meritocracy because there was a lot of pressure ont he refs in that period. Of course you need to think about the future (Italians had priblems with it, for instance), but there needs to be a good balance

      Delete
    2. I think you gave a pretty good diagnosis for Bebek's career stall, M. I still remember that night in Braga, it seems everything went downhill since then. However, there is one point missing here, and maybe I'm wrong, but it could have had an influence on this recent drop in appointments for Bebek. The point in question is the infamous leaked audio from the end of September 2021 in which Bebek talked negatively about Hajduk (a club from Split, Croatia, for foreign readers) and the constant "whining" of them and their supporters. Some strong words were used by him in that audio, including some targeted at one sports journalist from Split, however (and speaking as a Hajduk supporter, born and bred in Split), all the public outcry that followed was simply too much IMO. It was a private phone call which leaked to the media and yes, he had to receive some punishment, but not 4 months of suspension for something that could be described as "verbal delict". And although the appeal panel downgraded it to 2 months, the damage was done: everything happened right at the start of the new international season and, being suspended in his national league, it's no wonder Bebek's season was over. Moreover, he cannot be appointed for Hajduk matches any longer, nor was he given any big games in Croatia since, as you correctly stated.

The whole story of his career makes me a bit sad, because Croatia really had a shot at having a main referee at a big tournament with him. Unfortunately, it never happened. Although I have to say that Dario Bel gives me some hope again in recent times.

    1. Riccardo Trevisani, former SKY Sport commentator, now Mediaset. I must admit he is the only Italian (professional) commentator having such behavior against referees, it is not the first time, I remember many situations in past in which he critiziced by using strong words. Based on that, I think he is missing in respect because he definitely doesn't know anything about refereeing and he doesn't ask himself how much difficult this work can be. I can confirm that other commentators are really composed and balanced in their comments.
To add, if you didn't understand what he said as comment: "Mateu Lahoz wanted to show that he was not in favor of Napoli in this game" (because he had whistled two penalties before).
      Really speechless...
BTW in past he was very active on social media, when he was working for SKY, now less. He got many criticisms by fans (of course not for refereeing comments, because people are not interested in that, but for opinions about teams).
I really would like to contact him to write some things..

    Replies
    1. Looks to be a lot of drama, straight RC, penalty + YC then two more YC’s

      Delete
    2. What do you mean with „classic Kulbakov game“? Were his decisions wrong or was it a bad management of the game?

      Delete
    3. Unfortunately yes, and more a mess than real drama. In my opinion, Kulbakov has contributed to it significantly. As a neutral viewer (I was watching the full game), I can't really feel his presence on the FoP. He wasn't leading this game, being in the background too much, without stepping in when necessary (lack of feeling?). Combine that with his lenient (tonight doubtful) foul recognition and disciplinary line, and you have all the ingredients for a mess like this. Maybe I'm wrong, but since becoming Elite, Kulbakov has never really convinced me, and I'm sorry for that, because I still remember time when some regular contributors on this blog held him in high regard while he was still competing for a spot in Elite (myself included).

About the RC, fully correct VAR intervention and a bad miss by Kulbakov/FO Šymusik. It was an intentional punch to the head, I thought I was watching a boxing match for a moment.

Penalty decision was correct IMO, the attacker was pulled inside the box.

      Delete
    4. "He wasn't leading this game". Should the referee be the boss?

      Delete
    5. Sorry if those words created some confusion. No, not the boss in an authoritarian meaning, or being the sole center of attention, of course not. What I wanted to say is that it seems to me that his style doesn't really enable him to effectively manage a game like this. He seems like an isolated figure, not stepping out from the background when it feels like a situation needs it. Maybe I'm completely wrong, it's just an honest opinion, nothing more, and I'm sorry if it offends anyone.

I wouldn't want to leave a wrong impression, I'm not trying to "burn" Kulbakov here. Quite the contrary, I really wanted him to succeed on the highest level, being from a less influential football country: it would have been a very nice story for Belarusian refereeing, and it already is with him officiating at this level. But I just have a feeling that he could have achieved more, however some less convincing performances prevented this. And I'm sorry for that.

    3. He had a relatively easy game. Correct cautions, correctly rejected the Monaco penalty appeal. The disallowed goal was correctly evaluated by AR, the VAR just confirmed and it was a very tight call.
Really clean and polished performance, good fitness level, so it's a "textbook" 8.4.

    2. Yeah, and I figure we will see some upcoming referees in San Marino too soon. ;) With Rosetti observing.
Or maybe, if Lugano get's into European football again. I'm sure we will see Rosetti there.

    ReplyDelete

    1. she is only 1st cat and FO in WC!, if she often get UCL assignments, I believe that would be political agenda for the Italians. I think UEFA should give and push another young man ref like Jorgji, Eskas, Rumsas, Frankowski, etc which are much better than Frappart or Monzul. I'm not against women, but this is totally madness, this is not gender equality, this is not more than political agenda that burning meritocracy from promising young "man" referees, if women referees always get huge clash/chances in UEL/UCL man.

      Delete
    2. Well we don't know that she's only gonna be used as a FO in the WC for all we know she could be given an assignment as center referee and u didn't answer my question could we see her back in CL after her good performance

      Delete
    3. I've already said that if Frappart gets another UCL match, it's clearly it would be political agenda because actually Frappart doesn't have a goal anymore to get with some matches in UCL (she's already lead Super Cup), she's only a category 1 referee, unlike the case of Siebert after ATM-MCI. For me it's impossible for a Category 1 referee to officiate at a World Cup level unless they're crazy people that pushing their political ambitions which camouflaged with something "pseudoscience" like gender equality.

      Delete
    4. If gender equality is implemented, male referees should also be able to lead women's matches and female referees such as Adamkova, Lehtovaara, etc. also deserve a chance at UECL at least.

  46. @Chefren: am I wrong, or with Rocchi, referees are no longer designated based on their performance, but on the esteem the designator has for them? I just read that Banti came out as VAR despite last week's disaster, Sozza is back in A despite bad performance and crucial mistake last game and so on, zero meritocracy...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Let's say that you are not 100% wrong. Differently from Rizzoli, indeed I noticed that Rocchi is very selective in terms of assignments. Once a referee gains his trust, he acquires a very solid position in front of his eyes, and maybe some mistakes made are not treated like other referees. I observed this especially in Marinelli path, more than all other referees, in past he has had very controversial performances, but Rocchi has always protected him. Now rumors say that he could join FIFA list (Sozza is sure). Quite the same is happening with Marchetti (young referee, he attended the UEFA CORE, now injured), Rocchi appointed him even after games with some mistakes. More generally, I think it is always important to have an idea about the real qualities of a referee, and for example Sozza is a name that deserves everything, based on what he has shown until today, because he has failed only 3 or maximum 4 games in all serie A appearances so far. But when a referee is still not recognized as with quality, it is indeed noticeable what you said about Rocchi.
To conclude, I wouldn't be so extremist like you (0 meritocracy) but indeed there is a different way of working. You know how much difficult is to assess and make referees grow, so one should draw conclusions only at the end.
And... last remark, protecting referees after big storms such as Juventus - Salernitana is a habit by AIA, not a specific attitude by Rocchi, so one must also mention that as well...
In a very equal world, all51 or 52 serie A and B referees should get same opportunities but this is impossible :)

  47. Nikola Dabanović in Midtjylland - Lazio.

    26' 1-0 Possible offside
    https://streamable.com/qgffnn
The player jumping in the shot before, punishable offside? Of course, the mind goes immediately to Bonucci situation in Juventus - Salernitana, but in this case a bit different. VAR took a bit to confirm the goal. Broadcaster showed only the replay about the possible offside of the player reaching ball, of course they didn't realize why check had been so long. In my opinion this is a very important decision by Slovenian VAR, but I'm quite sure one of the "UEFA VARs" (let's call them in this way, you understand what I mean), would have called the referee from Montenegro to OFR and maybe the goal would have been disallowed, who knows...

    50' - Penalty
    https://streamable.com/2r2wxk
Quick counterattack... a supportable decision, but my feeling is that referee thought it had been something more., At the end all is about the arm on the opponent and this holding. I must say it appears soft on all replays unless the last one (frontal from goal line's point of view). The whistle can be justified, never an evident mistake, but not a clear penalty though.

    66' - Second penalty
    https://streamable.com/y2dvv8
In this case correct call, nothing to say, attacker clearly hit by defender.

70' - Possible RC for SFP
    https://streamable.com/5ei5yo
Player immediately aware, you can argue that thank to his behavior after the foul, I would have liked more replays, but we are surely in SFP's zone.
