  2. 7 games left.

And 12 Elite referees not assigned so far (correct me if I'm wrong..):
    - Oliver, Bastien, Letexier, Zwayer, Sidirópoulos, Grinfeld, Orsato, Makkelie, Collum, Sánchez Martínez, Gozubuyuk, Meler

    ReplyDelete
  3. Don’t forget Mateu Lahoz. Gozubuyuk won’t get it I think (he didn’t pass LoTG I recalled). Collum already assigned to SVKAZE on MD5. Orsato, Makkelie, Oliver will sure get a chance. So does Zwayer

  4. Top games on Monday and Tuesday:
    SUICZE
    PORESP
    ENGGER
    HUNITA

The games in Portugal, England and Hungary don't have important observers. Options: Zwayer / Mateu Lahoz / Orsato / Makkelie / Oliver?

The observer in Switzerland is mr. Šajn. Any predictions? I think Letexier might be a good shout.

    1. HUNITA - exclude English+German referees+Orsato. And you are left with Makkelie / Mateu Lahoz

ENGGER - exclude English+German referees+Orsato. The first leg had a Spanish referee, but this isn't no longer a strict rule...? Can see a young referee like Letexier here as well.

      SUICZE - a young Elite / category 1.

PORESP - first leg officiated by Oliver. Orsato possible here.

    2. Or Zwayer in Portugal. There are also a few tight games in League B where Elite referees are not misplaced.

      Delete
    3. I think Oliver will be assigned SWESVN or NORSRB. ENGGER Makkelie (but I don’t know with what happened in Euro 2020, if that’s the case, then Lahoz). HUNITA Makkelie/Lahoz.

  5. After UEFA Super Cup, one should start to reflect about Stéphanie Frappart appointments in UEFA competition. Last one this game with Liechtenstein, yes it is important for Moldova, but please...
True that she has been ranked as Category 1 referee for Men's Competitions, so everything seems to be normal in terms of games she got, mostly in EL, ECL, but... is really that enough for being called at WC even if only as reserve? If we compare her to other Category 1 referees, she is just one among the others... nothing more than that. The focus could have been on other names. In terms of performances, she could have shown more so far. And let me also add... given how she was managed after the Super Cup, the appointment for that game had been indeed just a gift and definitely nothing more. I would even dare to say that committe was forced to make this choice.by appointing her as signal and nothing more. Let's say, more challenging games in the last seasons and an increasing degree of difficulty of her matches would have definitely justified all the process. But as for now the answer is negative and in my opinion she dodesn't deserve to be main referee at World Cup.

    1. At least it isn't eg. Edina Alves Batista in Qatar, it could have been (even) worse! :D

There is also something about this which makes me deeply uneasy on a personal level for these (trailblazing!) officials at the WC. I recall a very interesting statements by two of the best 'third world' referees ever, Ravshan Irmatov and Gamal Al-Ghandour, who stated (I paraphrase): "AFC/CAF referees are roughly as strong as Euro/S. Americans technically, but they don't believe in themselves as much". I don't entirely agree (FIFA's pushing of Sub-Saharan Africans was quite deliberate and exaggerated, you can see this policy for decades), but in many cases I think they are basically right:

      1) Saudi ref at France 1998 had a virtually *perfect* performance in his (challenging) first group match in 1998, but this game was one 'out of focus', and when he was accordingly given a second game more in focus, his performance was okay but by far more shaky.

      2) Vanuatu(!!) had two WC linesmen in history again owing to 'compensating non NZ/AUS in OFC policy': in 2002 the guy was simply way too weak and his inclusion was a joke, but in 1998 their official, Lencie Fred, was actually very good. As his matches again got 'more in focus', again his performances got more shaky, culminating in the wrongly disallowed goal in the third place playoff.

      3) I can't understate how much Irmatov and Yuichi Nishimura were at the TOP at WC 2010, they were both fantastic, and indeed I would classify the Japanese as the best referee of the whole tournament, personally. However, under Massimo Busacca's revolution, both got completely disorientated (see the respective messes they made at Confed Cup 2013), and lost their way. It only took a small change, but to be honest these referees were completely destroyed by Busacca, whereas UEFA-CONMEBOL refs managed to cope okay, even when their styles *were* less-suited to this than already pretty lenient Irmatov and Nishimura.

Anyway, my (exaggeratedly :D) long point is that referees aren't idiots and, of course, know exactly the reasons for their selections, if they are there on merit, and so on. It is deeply unfair on Frappart that when she looks in the mirror before leading the teams out at Belgium vs. Canada (that's my guess :P), she knows that a) she has only been selected *because of her sex*, and, b) her international experience in men's football amounts to tokenism and 'crumbs off the table'. It is unfair to be thrown under the bus like that because of idpol lunacy... just imagine if 'Genk vs. Slovan Liberec' happens at the WC, how damaging that would be for ALL female match officials around the world, and of course for her specifically.

It is madness and HAS nothing to do with UEFA/FIFA being kind, equal oppotunity whatever, it is purely for their own (financial) gain. Yamashita was selected for World Cup whilst reffing in the *Japanese men's third division*(!!!), I mean come on...

    2. But they somehow managed to promote Yamashita to J-League :P

    2. Wow, what a revolution!

Tierney(!), Bankes and Coote removed - Gillett, R. Jones and Brooks in.

      Delete
    3. Apparently Tierney has stepped down. Really I am not that surprised at 41 he isn't going to improve. He clearly isn't good enough for this level. Bankes and Coote the same. I am shocked that Bankes and Coote will be VAR as they really are not very good as VAR's in the premier league.

    7. Quite doubtful about Robert Jones’ nomination and what a quick promotion to FIFA list for Brooks and Gillett after only last season. got promoted to EPL. Michael Salisbury also being nominated as VAR after a promotion last season

    8. Rob Jones is a far better referee than Bankes and Coote. Gillett was always going to return to the list. Not sure about Brooks though.

    9. To Micaela W.
Can you please explain your comments about the 2 English officials being removed from FIFIA.
What is your refereeing experience and have you ever been at that level as a referee .
If they were not good referees why were they put there in the first place .
Just interested in your comments .——m

    10. I am not sure what he needs to explain? They have been removed as they are worse than other referees.

      Delete
    11. Ever since they’ve been assigned as 4O or VAR in UEFA competitions, I already sensed that Jones, Brooks and Gillett will be nominated as the list. Not surprising of Coote’s removal, already doubting his nomination (never been convinced by him at all)

So in your opinion we not to ask about comments
This is excellent site for people to give there views on games and referees.
So we can lean from each other.

    13. Hooper is unlucky to miss out, imo. He’s shown more than Brooks, although that’s no disrespect to Brooks he just hasn’t had as many opportunities

      Delete
    14. I think Hooper is unlucky. John Brooks should have just been a VAR. Surprised Tierney is not working only as a VAR. Coote is lucky to even be a premier league referee.

      Delete
    15. Ditto about Brooks as VAR first. Hooper is being pushed this season (many important games so far in EPL) but still too “early” to nominate him because he’s not quite good last season (and a lil bit slow). Let’s see this year. Anyway, is there any limit to FIFA registered ref from one country?

      Delete
  7. @JackS, there has been an anonymous user attacking others for 'not having refereeing experience' when they are critical towards an official. This time, MikaelW (now called Micaela) just states a fact - it's probably best to ignore this anonymous user (and that's to all of us)

  8. I can please made the excellent administrator on this site.
When people make a comment on games and referees.
Can they stop using Anonymous as there name .
And please put there name and country first .
That way we could have discussion on referees and refereeing.
This a excellent site for people to help each other .

    1. Dear Alexander, we can't oblige people to put their name and country before or after the post, they could even do that, but in that case who can ensure that it's true? I know what you mean, sometimes very unacceptable comments from anonymous accounts, but that's the other side of the coin, we have also excellent contributions with people that wouldn't write if not anonymous. I think that in an Internet community it is very difficult to oblige people to identify themselves. It's up to reader behavior, in my opinion.

    2. This does not sound like English written by someone from Scotland... so not sure about "Alexander, Scotland". Anyone can put any name and country - how would this be different than Anonymous? It is the same.

Melo Pereira was head of refereeing in Greece. Now he observes Papapetrou.

    Surely that could be avoided.

    2. And has anyone had fifa assistant and Fifa referee apart from Darren England and now John brooks?

      Delete
    3. CMIIW, John Brooks has not been registered as FIFA AR before but Darren England did. He let go of his AR badge before climbing up to SG1 as referee then registered to FIFA.

    4. Kruashvili did the U21 EURO final both as referee and AR, I recall.

    5. It was the 2011 U17 EURO final as AR and the 2021 U21 EURO final as referee for Kruashvili.

  15. UEFA seem particular about the Irish Referee,Harvey. 3 important games in a small time, maybe we can expect more from him in future. It is nice to see smaller countries get recognized. Do Ireland use VAR in the league?

    1. Harvey getting huge push from UEFA. I expect him to get another group game after his performance in match day 1.

    2. Mr Harvey is probably the most important referee to come from Ireland in a number of years

    1. I thought Letexier might get it but he’s assigned to MNEFIN. Now I’m pretty sure Oliver will get this

    2. Or a category 1 in focus for a promotion

      Delete
    3. As I can think about category 1 on focus for promotion, they have already been assigned (Visser with Rosetti himself as observer, Ekberg with quite big game FRAAUT, Mariani on SCOUKR). Hence I figure Oliver will get SUICZE. Is there any name on the road to promotion that I missed? I could only think of those 3 I guess. I’m still quite limited in knowledge 😄

    4. Peljto
      Eskås
      Glova
Perhaps Stegemann if there is still a competition between him and Osmers.
All the other names are already assigned to MD4 or MD5.

    5. Stegemann is appointed to Japan-Ecuador on the same day so that's not possible. Also doubt Eskås will get two consecutive appointments with a committee member as observer. My predicition would be Peljto

  19. Makkelie with Germany national team. Does it mean UEFA support his much discussed decision in Munich?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not necessarily, but it was to the advantage of the German team so no real problems. He wouldn’t have been given England - Spain. Same for England, we all know the penalty against Denmark was a mistake, he wouldn’t be given Denmark right now. Advantages take less weight compared to disadvantages

      Delete
    2. His appointment confirms that.
But the majority here already agreed that it wasn’t a penalty because the attacker, like so many, initiated the contact by putting the foot away from the ball to be hit. I think that was also the judgement of Van Boekel (experienced VAR) who confirmed his decision.

      Delete
    3. Most people in refereeing circles agreed that no-PK was the best (or at least, more than supportable) decision.

I sincerely hope and pray that a Referee committee is not ‘guided’ by the opinion of “quality” newspapers like Marca, German Kicker, or the pink Italian when the appointments are made. That would be a big failure, weak HR-management and leadership.

    4. Despite being a top clash, England - Germany won’t be more then a friendly, since England has been relegated to Divison B this evening. Absolute top clash for Bastien now. He can show his abilities now!

  20. Us the match for Osmers a low profile game or is it a good match?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Makkelie back to Euro 2020 memories in Wembley and if I remember correctly he also lead England v Germany in round of 16.

Monzul got a deserved appointment in the context "man" football match for "women". I think it was embarrassing appointment for Monzul after final Euro women, but again this is man football, I don't believe with pseudo-gender equality unless politics it's involved inside there.

  22. I think it will be a difficult game for Halil Umut Meler in Romania. What do you think?

  23. @HH why do you think so? Bosnia is first in group and they already said they will play with B team there.

    1. Relegation is at stake for Romania and they need to win the game and it can get heated.

  24. With all to respect for Romania do not want to relegate from B to C against team who has nothing to play for , I think this is very easy game for a referee who have many Istanbul derbies behind him. Only hot game I see will be in Budapest.

  25. No game for Michael Oliver then.

    1. Just one English referee has a game in this semi-friendly tournament? Thats strange, unless there is a good reason ofc. But just compare to how many, for instance, Spanish refs are assigned? A lot..

      Delete
    2. Oliver is likely the referee for Spurs vs Arsenal at the weekend or Man United vs man City, this shouldn't make a difference. Spanish referees are more heavily pushed in these competitions despite being worse referees.

    3. Other missing Elite referees: Grinfeld (had 2 NL matches already), Gözübüyük (still not passed test?), Hategan (not refereeing again), Karasev (from Russia), Sanchez (had 2 NL matches already).
So for everybody besides Oliver, there is a good explanation for missing out.

      Delete
    4. is Hategan retired?

      Delete
    5. Hațegan now work as VAR, not on the field. He is with Kovacs tomorrow in Copenhaga. (Ichigo)

    6. As "not refereeing again" is ambigous: I meant, he hasn't restarted his refereeing career after his health problems. Whether he will do that at some point or is going to retire, I don't know.

  27. Quite surprised with Sidiropoulos in Krakow. I don't think he deserves a "final" match in Group B1, he should be in Tallinn and Siebert in Krakow.

    6. Sidiropoulos has started the season well and more confidently than last year. He needs 1-2 good European games to establish himself in champions league
