  1. Cool! I predicted Oliver in Leverkusen and Makkelie in Munich. The latter had a low profile game in 2nd league on Friday, whereas Oliver was appointed to a top game in PL (before cancellation).
Dutch FA applied the same strategy as the Italian FA with Massa.

  2. The first thing to comment is surely Mateu with German VARs. More generally, we see many mixed VARs in terms of nationality in this round. If Mateu is not a replacement of Zwayer, one could have expected him in that group, it is indeed very particular. We will see tomorrow whether Zwayer has a game or not, as well as Siebert, but as for now one can expect more Zwayer in CL. I think if deliberate, it can be a test by committee to see how Mateu works with VARs from different nationality, and it is interesting to point out that many times we discussed that he has maybe sometimes too much "control" on the VAR on his games. In this game, he will not be allowed to do that, in other words, this can be a signal by committee.
Another argument is the fact that committee didn't like the work of Hernandez Hernandez in Napoli and for this reason there weren't other Spanish VARs to appoint, we can't know.. in all cases for me a big surprise.
Makkelie with the big game in Munich was expected after his domestic assignment on Friday, Oliver the other option.
About Oliver, English VARs again for him: well, I think the answer is that when there aren't big games, English VARs are allowed to officiate, otherwise they are not. In this case, the match is by far less sonorous that many others, but when Atlético plays, it can be always difficult. Sidiropoulos in CL just to make an appearance, Sanchez Martinez with a good game in Marseille. Dias was expected in Amsterdam as well. Then, two referees will already get their second games, Schaerer in Plzen and Jovanovic in Lisbon. Very good for both of them, but at the same time one could say that there aren't too many options? Category 1 could have been appointed at least for the game in Plzen, but here one must mention again the discussion regarding Italian teams, and indeed committee doesn't want to take any risk, an Elite is appointed. In Lisbon to me a bit different, an Elite could have been expected due to the teams involved in the game, but still if committee wanted to make a different choice...
Rangers - Napoli with Mateu can be another argument for discussion, was a very Elite referee needed there? If for Napoli - Liverpool I fully agreed, here not. To add, Napoli get the seocnd Spanish big in a row, after Del Cerro. This confirms us that committee doesn't look at this aspect anymore.
For this reason, Orsato possible in City - Dortmund, it seems the only reasonable game for him, but still not the match we remember from past years, due to German team form. Mariani seems to be surely confirmed in group F.
Now I'm also very curious about Milan - Dinamo Zagreb, if Elite also in this case, well...

    1. I think, there is a decent chance that Gil Manzano and Hernandez get a match tomorrow (and if not, then probably in EL) and appointing 4 Spanish VARs with Hernandez and Sanchez unavailable would be quite difficult. That explains the German VAR for Mateu, I think.
The repetition of two referees is not a good sign for the depth of UEFA top refereeing. Yes, the Elite group is a bit reduced currently with Aytekin and Cakir retired and Hategan, Karasev, Meler, maybe Orsato, maybe unknown others unavailable. But still, it should be possible to find e.g. 24 Elite + 8 First Group referees for the 32 games of the double matchday.
Milan-Zagreb is one of the few games for a German or Spanish referee, so if not Hernandez, this alone could explain an Elite referee there.

    2. Of course, Lahoz with German VARs is the biggest surprise today. I want just to add that because it is Fritz+Dankert and not Dankert+Fritz, I think that neither Siebert or Zwayer will have a UCL game in MD2. Because Lahoz was expected for a game in MD2, I think that the appointment was made on purpose and Lahoz was not a replacement. Agree that this game doesn`t really require such a big name.
Dias has a good game in Liverpool. About Oliver with English VARs, indeed Kavanagh seems to be the best VAR in his country. Still, it is justify not trust him or other English VARs in big games for now.
I bet there will be an Elite in AC Milan - Dinamo Zagreb. Especially after the surprise in MD1. Even if the appointments were made at the same time for MD1 and MD2, some swaps would have been made in this regard. It is not a game where you want to take a risk. Maybe Gil Manzano?

  3. Is possible to see Marciniak again tomorrow? I see the name of a Polish AVAR, and like Schaerer and Jovanovic, he has a flexible nationality. Vincic is another name. He got 5 UCL group stage appointments last season and will be used a lot.

  4. There's either going to be a different VAR or 4th with Oliver as Kavanahh can't do both at the same time

    1. Sidiropoulos’s game is not bad. One of his last chances to show his quality. I think he will retire at the end of the season. Not much to expect internationally . Papapetrou will join cat 1 in the summer. I hope this time the committee will not throw him straight into deep water as last season . Manouchos will become Number 2 in the hierarchy with the potential to overtake Papapetrou in the next two years. Very important observer for him on the youth game he got (Bianschi). Manouchos has a similar style to Vassaras

      Delete
    2. Retired? He's still 43 maybe 44. Maybe he's not the top or mid elite referee group, but he's still has capacity to keep officiating in top European league, at least for top match UEL. If Sidiropoulos wasn't in the ranks of elite referees, Greek referees would really be vanished because of the policy in his local league that made no sense at all. What makes me wonder is where Kulbakov is, the only reason is the current political situation, other than that I believe Kulbakov's capability is still much better than Sidiropoulos (he got promoted really because of his meritocracy)

      Delete
    3. Papapetrou for me has finished. Manouchos, I never watched his match but it's just Greece at its best I think he will take quite a while to get to Sidiropoulos' level now, Siebert's special treatment case, I think only could apply for the top 5 federations.

      Delete
    4. Papapetrou is only 37. He is a good referee but need more games domestically . He is going to get them with Bennet. I feel sorry for Steve Bennet. He is trying to get things right in Greece but the system is very corrupt and thus against him. In my opinion , Greek refs are very good and can ref at a high level . But unfortunately they are let down by the way generally Greek system works.

      Delete
    5. Papapetrou will, most likely, be promoted. Manouchos, IMO, doesn't have the quality to be a 1st Group, let alone an Elite offiial.

It was said that Clattenburg wanted to remove Sidiropoulos and Papadopoulos from the FIFA list....

      Now? Unknown.....

      Delete
    6. I think Papapetrou should become number 1 in Greece ASAP; Sidiropoulos will not be given any attention further by the committee. However , he should continue as FIFA ref for 2 more years but as number 2 in the hierarchy. Manouchos is a very good young ref, educated and well presented on pitch. He needs to stay away from frictions in Greek football

      Delete
    7. Manouchos does not show strong presence on the pitch. Some times he whistles too much in order to maintain control.

  9. Crucial penalty by Gözübüyük in the last minutes of PSV-RKC. Led to the 1-0. RKC players were furious and claimed that it was a kind of compensation for the title race deciding penalty Gözübüyük gave to Feyenoord last season against PSV.

  10. SCANDALOUS penalty kick given by Serdar Gozubuyuk in the match PSV - RKC Waalwijk in extra time (1-0)!! On TV the speak very negative about his performance and in particular about this expected present he gave to PSV after his scandalous penalty je have last season which decided the championships. Now the defender cleared the ball and the attacker headers against the defenders leg. Unbelievable that VAR doesn’t intervene here?! Crazy!!!! Gozubuyuk proves again that he has not the level of a top referee!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought he would be in contention for the top game AZ - Ajax next week, but surely he can forget about that now. Probably two out of Higler, Lindhout and Nijhuis for that game and PSV - Feyenoord now

      Delete
    2. It will be Higler in Eindhoven (PSV-Fey). The ref coordinator doesn’t fancy Nijhuis and Higler - unlike other referees - didn’t officiate both teams the last 3 weeks.
For the other game, I had Gozubuyuk in mind, but not sure it is possible now

      Delete
    3. If Lindhout will have one of both games it’ll be nothing less than a present. He has not had a good start of the season, his games did not run smoothly, quite a lot of controversies and feisty players (mainly because of his unwillingness to show clear cautions), just not up to handling a top level game at this moment.
Apart from the Super Cup game Higler did not have any issues in his matches.
I still guess it’ll be Higler and Gözübüyük for next week’s top games.

      Delete
    4. What a nonsense and stop bashing Lindhout. Lindhout is currently the best performing and potential FIFA referee after Makkelie. Higler wasn’t good in the Super Cup and after that he only had low profile games. He is doing well Internationally and PSV Feyenoord is in line with his development.

      Delete
    5. * Lindhout is doing well Internationally and PSV Feyenoord is in line with his development.

    6. Please Anonymous 17:45, you’re the one talking nonsense and evidently fanboying Lindhout.
Missed RC, even after Ofr (Sfp elbow) in Az-Gae, lack of control in Nec Nijmegen-Groningen due to not issuing appropriate sanctions, mistakes in Fortuna-Fc Utrecht and being rewarded a 2 in Dutch leading football magazine. Just a couple of incidents coming to mind. But I will try to substantiate my statements by looking for some clips to avoid being accused of ‘bashing Lindhout’.

    7. @ 18:02
Yeah. I suggest that you always post a video if you want to burn a referee (no matter who) to support your arguments, because 99% of the readers on this international blog can’t watch Eredivisie (or simply don’t care ;-).
And not the ESPN video Twitter link, cause people outside your small country can’t see it 🙂

      Delete
    8. And I suggest you change your condescending tone @Ref. If 99% of readers don’t care about Eredivisie I suppose they won’t watch the posted videos as well right?
And I don’t know what the size of my country has to do with this discussion, or with anything concerning this blog for that matter.
I don’t know why you’re attacking me specifically, while many readers produce comments about many referees without providing any videos.

      Delete
    9. Well, I’m Dutch myself :D
There is always an Anonymous person here, burning Dutch referees without posting a video. Just post a video - this could open a nice discussion, as 99% of the readers here does not watch our ‘Micky Mouse League’ regularly :)

Now, it’s burning a referee without a piece of evidence and this doesn’t serve a purpose IMO.

  11. Interesting decision by Orsato in Bologna game as a reckless challenge made by Fiorentina defender which would have been a YC but AR flagged that the ball had gone out of play when the challenge was made which it had and yet Orsato still gave the SYC and subsequent RC. Play was restarted with the throw in aswell. I like this decision as defender shouldn’t get away with the challenge just because the ball was out of play.

    1. Is it controversial in Italy or well-accepted?

      Delete
    2. It has been well-accepted by fans, however the game was not so much under the spotlight, so not a big echo in all cases. The cooperation Orsato - AR was praised.

      Delete
  12. Just watched the penalty by Gozubuyuk (the links above don't work outside NED, but you can easily find it on youtube), I think that live it was not difficult to understand that better decision was play on. You have the perception of a very fair action on the ball. However, once whistled, VAR couldn't intervene and I fully agree with this decision because you can't prove that there wasn't any contact with attacker. The mistake stays as full responsibility of main referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. Play-on is the better decision - player moves his head forward, very low. Tbh I expected something worse when reading those ‘scandalous’ wordings in caps lock. They exaggerate because it’s Gozubuyuk making a big decision in a PSV-game (again..)

Btw Gozubuyuk refused to explain his decision in front of the camera and he is not the first one (!) to refuse this season. I think I haven’t seen any referees in front of the camera this season. I listened a podcast in which was stated that this is a new policy, because of the upcoming WC Qatar. FIFA or KNVB(?) don’t want Makkelie and v.Boekel in the spotlight. I’m assuming that KNVB applied this policy for all the referees, as it would be strange to allow all the referees to do so, except two of them.

      Delete
    2. After watching replays, I don't think the penalty was given for the defender's action, but for the keeper's. Comes out, doesn't play a ball and tackles the PSV player.

      Delete
    3. Van de Graaf explained his decision to not give a SYC for kicking the ball away at Ajax-Heerenveen yesterday.

      Delete
    4. @19:43 ah thanks. He is a non-FIFA though.
I haven’t seen Lindhout and Gozubuyuk in front of camera, but the latter is well known for refusing this :D
I think it’s good if Makkelie and vanBoekel refuse to do it as well. Sometimes it’s good to be transparant and explain a decision, sometimes the interview causes even more negative attention if you ask me. People will have their own (subjective) view anyway

      Delete
    5. In Italy referees don't talk at all, because every word can be always manipulated and used against them, and indeed for most of the fans that's useless because they will never change idea and they can't understand refereeing.

      Delete
    6. This comment has been removed by the author.

    7. So fascinating to hear all these approaches. For Germany, I do not exaggerate if I say that referees weekly talk with media about some scenes. It has become normal. This also counts for FIFA referees, as Zwayer and Siebert have already given interviews.

      Delete
    8. @Ref_1707 Yes that used to work very well in Netherlands, to explain the rules, however supporters of top clubs really don’t accept the explanation when their team is harmed and it becomes a witch hunt. And the interviews generate even more negative attention with talkshows that like to show it, talk about it and analysts give their (negative) opinions, etc.

But on the other hand, when a referee doesn’t give any explanation, he is a coward and hiding something. That’s it for now…

  13. What is your opinion on the delay signal(according VAR protokol) for a possible faul, because all the journalists and commentators told in live that this faul must be whistled immediately:

    https://streamable.com/toggaj

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fully correct to delay the whistle. It applies not only for offside but also for fouls or out decisions. However, delayed whistle for fouls is only justified if there is an immediate possibility to score a goal.

  14. What are peoples thoughts of the final stages of the Juve game, looks to be 5 red cards and a 95th minute goal disallowed with the player who celebrated said goal was sent off for taking his shirt off. Lord of drama for Marcenaro to deal with

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What an ending...

Imo ,all red cards are correct all his bookings were ok.

I only dont know about the Juve disallowed goal, whether that decision is correct...

      Delete
    2. I saw the game only from 80' but hey, a lot of events at the end. About the disallowed goal, I think it is a mistake. Bonucci didn't obstruct the Gk. He was not between ball and Gk. So, wrong OFR. Of course, mass protest, 2RCs and second YC for T-shirt off. Also, at the penalty in 91', one could say that Cuadrado if I am not mistaken made a foul before, but penalty correct decision imo, the contact was too soft and the player standed up seconds later. However, I have to say that I did not like the referee's management of the mass confruntation.

      Delete
  15. What an end in Juventus - Salernitana, in my opinion mistake by VAR Banti to call the OFR for offside, not punishable because the attacker didn't interfere with opponent, big chaos and 3 or 4 sending offs + 11 minutes of added time. You should watch full sequence to understand... a pity, terrible end for what looked like a quite good performance by the young referee in a challenging game.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In Italy they use some former referees as "VAR PRO," supposedly VAR experts who now just do that. The problem is that, apart from Di Paolo, they are all incredibly poor: Banti tonight confirmed once again that Italian VAR PRO are a total failure.

      Delete
    2. Sad thing is that young referee is now gonna face lot of criticism cor his mistake, even though he had good game up until that point.

So we wont see him for a long time in some big matches.

      Delete
    3. Crazy scenes at the OFR. So many people from both teams and both benches huddled around the RRA, the referee having to crawl through this crowd of people in order to view the screen; this gives off a poor impression. I think the referee was attempting to make the call quickly in order to put and end to the foolishness that was happening. But perhaps it would have been better to make sure everyone was behaving themselves before looking at the screen. It would have taken several minutes, surely, but this is the fault of the behavior of the teams, not the fault of the referee. Perhaps if he hadn't been so rushed about it, he or the VAR would have eventually noticed Candreva keeping everybody onside...

      Delete
  16. Shouldn’t the SYC for Milik be cancelled after the OFR? And didn’t make Cuadrado a foul before the 2-2 penalty?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Regarding Milik: It remains an offence to take off the shirt for celebrating, if the goal doesn't count.
This also makes sense, because it doesn't change the fact, that he did something, which isn't allowed according to the Laws.

      Delete
    2. True, but for example when a penalty is annuled because of offside, YC will be annuled too.

      Delete
    3. That depends: If the YC was for stopping a promising attack, the YC will be annulled, because the attack wasn't actually promising due to the offside.
But if the YC was for a reckless foul, it would still stand, even in case of a prior offside.

      Delete
    4. It is still unsportsmanlike behaviour,so yes,it is still yc.

      Delete
  17. The big drama in Greece about Panathinaikos vs. AEK will surely continue to rumble on - the hosts won by two goals to one, both scored from penalties given by Kabakov. When you remember how Sidiropoulos got removed, then you realise what a context the Bulgarian had to every single call tonight...

    1. 1) Not completely clear about the contact, but most likely correct
      2) One of those situations, that are just not clear: Good arguments for (surely not intended to block the ball, part of his overall "dying swan" movement) and against (his hands have no business above his head) a natural hand position here. I think, this needs to be at the referee's discretion at the moment and has to be accepted both ways.
      3) At least acceptable. Maybe one can call it soft, but there was a significant push at some point, so rather correct IMO.

    2. Mikael, yesterday I was on the stadium. It was very hot atmosphere, as you said - understandable. The Bulgarian managed the game and stopped the fire first half which was very challenging. He was calm, in control of everything. Second half was quite normal for our standards - another possible PK but he gave YC for similation #16 Panathinaikos. Just saw those situations and I can say he took correct decisions.

    11YC'S and 1 RC.

Dario Herrera imo performed really well,he had some troubles to keep players under control, bu hey,we are talking about SuperClasico, not some ordinary match.

Boca vs River is always a tough match and I think he did well.
RC was quick and sharp decision and correct one.

All other decisions can be backed as IMO,he had match under control.

    1. For my taste, the RC is too harsh. Only focussed on the ball and an upward movement, not a horizontal one.

      Delete
    2. Fully agree, M: good performance by Dario Herrera in, as usual, a challenging SuperClasico. However, I don't think he had troubles in controlling the players, as this seems to be very near to the best possible level of control you can achieve in such a game in South America. We are just used to something else here in Europe, myself included. But I can be very wrong, though.

About the RC, correct decision for me, looks like an SFP offence.
