Marciniak and Turpin with big games is no surprise. Dell Cerro Grande has Napoli vs Liverpool again having had it in 2019/20 at anfield.
DeleteWow, a big step for Guadalupe Ayuso!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat is this? How did Stieler and Grinfeld deserve these appointments?
ReplyDeleteIdk about Stieler but Grinfeld was very good in Viktoria Plzen - Sheriff CL R3 2nd leg game, so I think an early CL GS game was deserved.
DeleteI think Grinfeld has gotten much better, he deserves another opportunity
DeleteNo Makkelie?
ReplyDeleteAlso no Oliver or Mateu Lahoz and Orsato
DeleteWhy is this a problem
DeleteUefa have other referees
He can not get all the each week .
Yes is a excellent referee .
But they are other excellent referees on the list … M
Makkelie refereed two Play-Off games in 8 days, had to travel all the way to Bodo and Trabzon. Give the guy a break :)
DeleteOliver is the referee of PSG game on Sep 6th
DeleteThat’s Taylor
DeleteStieler back in Champions League, easily explained by Aytekin's international retirement and a free spot for a German in this competition (he was behind the countryman). As for the rest, I would say all expected appointments, nothing particular to report if not Porras Ayuso debut in Men's CL and Del Cerro Grande confirmed to be back in a good form.
ReplyDeleteThe appointments are too predictable and boring.
ReplyDelete- The treatment of Italian teams is particular. Almost always a top flight referee, unless an easy win by the Italian side (on paper) is expected. Is this fair towards other European teams, who get a lower Elite or Category 1?
- Anthony Taylor is the favorite of the committee president (probably because he has a good reputation in Italy..), whereas Michael Oliver is currently the best referee in PL. It’s about time that the latter is pushed and trusted more in games with a challenging context or with an Italian team (hopefully next week). Btw I don’t understand why one controversial game in 2018 with an Italian team should change the short term perspective of a referee. I presume, it would be different if it was a team from Germany or Spain. :S
- Turpin’s appointments are monotonous. For some reason, he is almost used in games with teams that want to play nice and fast football. Games where he is supposed to stay in the background without too much ‘man management’. I wish we could see more in something different. Btw, it seems they are already treating Letexier in the same way.
- On the other hand, it is always the same names that are trusted in heated games, the ugly or extremely challenging games or sensitive contexts. Orsato, Taylor, Makkelie and Marciniak are the first that come to mind.
- Already mentioned by several readers: the monotone assignment of Spanish referees with Portuguese teams.
- Etc.
Turpin: not just that, but in this group we will have a big game on every matchday. Why do we give the CL-final referee the game on the first matchday instead of saving him for what could be a huge decisive clash later on?
DeleteOliver: it is indeed very particular and wouldn’t be the case for other countries, I agree on that. I don’t understand this policy in the first place - hypothetically, if Turpin screws over Inter on Wednesday, Inter would still be given French referees, just not Turpin. So why can’t we give Oliver an Italian team that isn’t Juventus?
+1
DeleteRegarding Michael Oliver, I’m thinking he might get Bayern - Barca next week. Bayern - Barca is a sensitive game in terms of media attention. Lewa against his former team. I have read plenty of buzz in German media. A Spanish, Italian, German ref are not possible + Turpin. Sounds look an opportunity for Michael Oliver?
Wait a sec. This Italian teams special treatment already became a stereotype here, even when it is not the case, like this time. You exaggerate a little bit. PSG-Juve, Bayern-Inter and Liverpool-Napoli are the absolut best games in MD1, together with Porto-Atletico. Who should heve been chosed to referee this games? The appointments are absolutely justified. Look, Jovanovic, a promising referee curently under development was chosed in AC Milan game, because it is not a top clash. If Rosetti wanted to play it safe, Vincic would have been there for example.
DeleteMatei is right when he says that most of the matches involving Italian teams in CL on this MD are big games, so big Elite can be expected. Nevertheless, in my opinion the trend of appointing rather safe options for Italian teams, differently from the others is still going on, but surely less than past. For example, in Salzburg - Milan, if not Milan there, a Category 1 would have been absolutely expected, we must consider the Serbian as full Elite now, in the meaning of having reached this step, then surely a further development for him is possible and it will happen, but for the game on paper with another team away and not Milan, we could have seen a Cat. 1.
DeleteWe can remember the last group stage of AC Milan with many controversial decisions, involving mostly Cakir, I think this is the reason behind UEFA choice. But yes, this should end soon, and I think hopefully that it's already happening.
Further clues on MD2 with the names for Rangers - Napoli, Milan - Dinamo Zagreb, Plzen - Inter and Juventus - Benfica. In my opinion, unless Turin and Glasgow's games, two Category 1 are possible on paper for Milan and Inter... we will see.
From a non italian perspective, Napoli isn't a big name. A low elite/high cat1 ref would have been sufficient.
DeleteConsidering the result of the last matches between Napoli and Liverpool and the current moment of form of the English team, a Napoli victory would not be surprising.
DeleteJust compare it with the other assignments and you get the point.
DeleteThe Scottish cauldron vs the current CL winner Real Madrid gets a young Elite.
Ajax versus Rangers (not an easy game at all!) gets a German referee who has been ignored for a long time
Other Germans teams like Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen and Benfica get a category 1 or young Elite. Are these games expected to be incredibly easy? I’m not so sure.
Rosetti loves Taylor, Carlos DCG and Turpin and treats the Italian teams in a certain, cautious way. Perhaps he reads too many Italian newspapers ;)
Regarding Taylor/Oliver.
DeleteIMO the committee trusts Taylor more because they see a real Elite. One that can be appointed to every clash.
The same cannot be said for Oliver (despite PLC's efforts to push him).
Turpin with his sixth Bayern appointment in the last 3 years
ReplyDeleteIt’s crazy how often he gets a football focused German, English or Dutch team.
DeleteIs Inter really football focused ? Remember, there are 2 teams on a football match.
DeleteYeah Inter play nice attacking football under Inzaghi
DeleteWell lets see the style of Inter and Inzaghi tonight. We might face the rebirth of Catenaccio, I am afraid...
DeleteAgree with Anonymous 12:09. For me it’s clear:
ReplyDeleteClément Turpin is assigned to the ‘group of death’ (Group C) on Matchday 1. This is a big match, however not too risky as it’s still early in group stage. As a result of this MD1 assignment, we can already draw the conclusion that Turpin won’t be used for a potentially decisive Bayern-Inter on Matchday 6.
In addition, I assume he won’t be used for a Porto-Atletico (again) as well on Matchday 6 after what happened last season.
In other words: he won’t be assigned to a high public profile- or risky match on MD6.
I say it again: IMO Clément Turpin will be kept in cotton wool by the committee, for the World Cup in Qatar as the ‘main’ UEFA frontrunner.
He also can’t referee Juve-PSG on the final match day 6. Turpin kept away from the spotlight, already protected for something big in Qatar, after being pushed in 2022 so badly?
DeleteThe French have a political leg stretched if you ask me.
He isn't even that good a referee. I wonder who will get Juventus vs PSG in Matchday 6. Surely Marciniak is the only option?
DeleteI wouldn't yet read too much into potential MD6 appointments like Bayern-Inter or Juve-PSG. It's pretty likely that at least one of those teams is already qualified by then.
Delete@Kaer; that’s true, although you’d expect UEFA to at least save a CL final for sth crucial and decisive on MD6, wouldn’t we? Especially when the choices for Group B are limited already. I think they will protect Turpin, but let’s wait for his next assignments ;)
Delete@Kaer It’s not even about MD6, but we can expect 2 teams to be fighting for second place after MD3, which means that we will have 1 crucial game with a lot of tension in the 2nd half of the group stage. It’s even possible that all 3 are fighting for 2 spots, which means that we will have 3 crucial games. Regardless of the outcome, he is now gone for any crucial game in the toughest group, which is not desirable given that UEFA thinks of him as their best referee (at least they gave him the CL-final, so why not give Makkelie MD1 and Turpin later, as Makkelie is apparently worse?)
Delete@ 16:53
DeleteNot true, Turpin can be used again in group B, it happened last year as well in group of death, but they can’t use him again in Intern-Bayern (MD6). That surprises me, because group B choices are limited, they also can’t use Turpin in PSG group, and Porto-Atletico is not likely. So, I concluded he could be away from the spotlight on MD6.
Some of the comments about Mr Turpin are absolutely nonsense.
ReplyDeleteIt clear some people who write do not like him as a referee .
The only people that matters in the Uefa referees committee —- m
I’m sorry, the way he is being pushed is just too much. That’s not Turpin’s fault, that doesn’t mean he is a bad referee, it does mean that he gets treated unfairly (and, therefore, others are treated unfairly as well). You can acknowledge this and still think he is a good referee, but it’s pretty obvious I would say
DeleteDid you read any hate or dislike in my comment above? :)
DeleteI hope not. No hate. I’m being neutral and analysed some clear patterns. To sum up:
1) Turpin is a World Cup returnee
2) was invited to the FIFA club World Cup to gain more experience on FIFA level
3) was protected during the 2022 UEFA knock-out stages
4) was appointed to the UCL final, for some of us, quite a surprise
5) Turpin probably won’t be appointed to something high profile / risky on MD6, whereas Group B could need him (!), because the Germans, Italians and Spanish are not possible in this group. Hence I concluded that Turpin is protected already.
Then, let’s continue with some of his colleagues:
- Orsato / Irrati won’t be in focus for the WC final in the first place after Rizzoli did it (2014) and Irrati as VAR (2018)
- The same could apply to the English refs. Howard Webb was appointed to the final in 2010. Further, we know that Collina loves Oliver, but his international assignments were not as great as Taylor’s.
- Makkelie could be blocked, as mr Kuipers’ recently officiated a big final.
- Mateu Lahoz is one of my favorite referees, but has in the eyes of UEFA, a bit too present sometimes, draws a lot attention on him
- Then, who else could be a UEFA frontrunner name? Perhaps Marciniak, great referee, but Turpin has a stronger political background IMO. The French are hungry.
Nevertheless, I do consider there is a big chance that UEFA won’t deliver a final referee in Qatar, because of the historical appointments > 2000, however: if they do, Turpin will be considered first, based on the clear patterns and political arguments above.
I imagine Taylor will referee any big game on Matchday 6 in that group.
DeleteGod help us all if Turpin referees the world cup final. He didn't exactly have a good game in the UCL final.
DeleteIf it's the AFC's turn they really have to push Faghani despite his recent form actually being similar to Bjorn Kuipers at Euro 2020 (has gone downhill a lot but still deserves to be top elite referee at the moment, but needs "low" match management)
DeleteI'm sure UEFA won't get a final this year, they will in 2026.
DeleteTo Jack s What is your refereeing status
DeleteHe was there , not watching the game on Tv .
Unfortunately there is small groups who write here ,
Do not like certain referees .
And others write here in a cheer leading group about a Uefa referee .
Plus is is far to early to say who is going to referee the WC final .
Yes, I know it’s too far away. And performance does matter :)
DeleteBased on politics it’s AFC or CONCACAF turn. If their referee(s) don’t perform well, focus will move to Turpin IMO, based on the strong political arguments, and how he’s been pushed and kept in cotton wool.
How much are the current referee fees for the group stage matches in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, respectively?
DeleteOff topic - Danny Makkelie is assigned in 2nd league next Friday, which is pretty rare. This usually means something big.
ReplyDeleteImo it could be either Oliver or Makkelie in München next Tuesday. Spanish / Italians / Germans + Turpin out. Taylor, Marciniak, Vincic already used this week.
I think it will be Oliver in Munich and Makkelie in Marseille
DeleteMakkelie appointment in CL on next week is sure, since in the space of two matchdays all Elite referees get at least a game. This domestic appointment on Friday can suggest us that he has a match on Tuesday, and maybe a big one.
DeleteIndeed Bayern - Barcelona with Duhamel (FRA) as observer seems very likely, otherwise a game important for the standings of a group, like Sporting - Tottenham (this group seems to be a very open one), if committee wants to keep him away from certain spotlights. It will be interesting to analyze the appointment even more under this point of view.
@Elliot, Yes also possible. Oliver did this game last season and the quick football suits his style very well, whilst the Dutchmen could be a sensible choice in a tensed stadium like Vélodrome.
DeleteAlthough Chefren posted Pereira (POR) as observer in Marseille and he accompanied Makkelie in Turkey recently. And Garibian in Lisbon
Delete@Anonymous 20:05 Ah forgot about that. Thought that game would be perfect for Makkelie as he's used to referee those games with very hot atmosphere, we all know about Marseille ultras and also Frankfurt's away fans
DeleteOrsato is also in the mix next week :)
DeleteComments about Turpin are absolutely deserved.
ReplyDeleteIMO,but this is just MO,one of the more overrated refs ever.
I know i may be controversial, but hey,we all have opinions, and this is mine.
Too much coldness, leniency and just not feeling the game well we often see from him.
If he was not in such big lobby as France ,he would never reach this career that he has reached.
I agree with comment that was written that he often gets matches and teams that are easy to manage, even last years finals wasnt that hard beacuse teams were just focused on playing football.
He had one tense match earlier that was Porto vs Atletico and he had big problems with his criterium and generally he didnt have control over that match,as is the case with some ither matches.
His lack of bookings and too much leniency sometimes costs him in his matches, losing players control and making them nervous .
I would even say that as far as France has,Bastien is far better ref dor my taste, but hey ,who am I to judge.
Anyway,thats all . 😃
So in your opinion he is a poor referee then.?
DeleteSo what is your experience in refereeing
At that level .
Never seen you in a game with a Uefa badge on.
Anonymous at least put your name with your comments. m
Yes,I said my opinion about him.
Delete"Never seen you in a game with a Uefa badge on."
Explain to me if you were in that type of game,I would love to hear explanation from great expert such as you are...
Anonymous: Are you one of those annoying types who always demands that an opinion only matters if the person has had that job? So we can’t give opinions on refs, players, cars, movies etc? Because we aren’t CL refs, car designers or actors?
DeleteGuys, you are exaggerating here. Turpin is a very very good referee.
DeleteThe one thing I have critized is the appointment strategy of committee. In my view, Clement Turpin's appointments are rather safe compared to other referees; like he always has to be "protected" for something big.
Just check his knock-out assignments of last three seasons:
- 2020: Chelsea-Bayern (R16) and Manchester United-Copenhagen (QF) - I think this was his final hurdle for the EL final, but he screwed it and the focus moved to Makkelie who handled e.g. the Liverpool-Atletico game.
- 2021: Liverpool-Leipzig (R16), Chelsea-Porto (QF) and a EL game in Holland. -> again all the way protected for the Europa League final.
- 2022: Bayern-Salzburg (R16) and a non-decisive football-focused Chelsea-Real Madrid first leg (QF) + a bunch Europa League assignments away from the spotlight.
He is almost never assigned to a Balkanic clash, a south-European clash, stadiums with extremely hot / tensed atmosphere or teams that are not just focused on playing football (dissents, theatrics, teams surrounding the referee, etc), facing real pressure. But it were rather teams that are well-known for their true sportsmanship and the more attractive and fluent football.
I think he is a wonderful (!) referee, but I don't understand why his KO-appointments are always this "safe", especially when you compare with Orsato, Marciniak, Makkelie, Taylor.
Turpin was dreadful in the UCL Final as well as the England vs Italy clash. Almost all the games he referees that I watch he was rubbish
DeleteTurpin actually turning out to be very good is one of the great accidents of the last ≈decade in UEFA refereeing, and I'm sure it also took many in Nyon by great surprise too. Remember, the pushing of him to EURO 2016 was genuinely comical: Lannoy was too old, they tried Gautier first before he messed up his U21 EURO, Collina had to basically re-define the Elite category to get him up (Orsato has him to thank for his elite promo!!), he was of course selected despite biiiggg Gladbach vs. Man City mess, and when he was at the EURO, performance in AUTHUN was pretty horrendous.
DeleteThere is no secret that he was Garibian/FFF's golden boy - and Bastien/Buquet definitely WEREN'T - and for me it is quite strange, I can't work out why it was him. He never shined at any point in Ligue1 or coming up through UEFA ranks. Typical referee politics I guess. All in this race for the French EURO, he was paired with the best (regarded) talent-mentor coach too, and only after a very benign run did he make it to the élite. I remember very well being quite stunned to read his name with the Peru vs. New Zealand playoff, but sure enough, he really impressed me with a very good piece of refereeing in a tense context and tetchy game (though I see he missed two pks looking back ;)).
No doubt that now normal lobby for big nation helped him gain the WC 2018 nomination, but it was fully deserved from my perspective - he was one of the few shining names from the controversial UEFA knockout stage in 2017/18. Collina really believed in him, and I’m sure that Turpin savoured this trust in him. Remember that he was (considered) ahead of Makkelie, now one of the top two refs in the world, in Summer/2018. I don’t think the following Rosetti regime has been a good one for Turpin at all - it is obvious that Čeferin has his favourites (Brych, Kuipers, Makkelie, Çakir until you-know-what, accepting RR’s Orsato), and the Frenchman is NOT one of them.
Refereeing, as all walks of life comprises different personalities, and Turpin seems to have suffered from the ‘Čeferin pitch manager era’. Rosetti never really trusted him (this became really obvious in COVID CL/EL events IMO), Turpin then got worse, and the cycle continued. He became more and more passive in his games and the denouement of all this was in Copenhagen. RUSDEN at EURO quite stunned me - it was the performance of a referee who didn’t believe in himself at all: DtR mgmt in 1H, (assessed) crucial mistakes in 2H, and by the end he completely lost it in a AUTHUN-esque way.
I got a sight of the ‘old’ Turpin at Club WC, but add-in UEFA22 nonsense, you see his performances in the European football arena are simply to survive and nothing more (case-in-point: CL final showing, verrrryyy average reffing). The anonymous comments on here add two and two together and get five when discussing Turpin. Rosetti doesn’t like Mateu / doesn’t fancy Turpin and he was basically FORCED to give them CL, EL finals before the EURO only because HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE LOBBIED AGAINST BY RFEF/FFF. Same as Saint-Denis final, Čeferin instructed him not Makkelie, he can make FFF happy by Turpin in their own ground, Kuipers wants his job when Rosetti’s usefulness for Slovenian is expired so says nothing, bingo everyone is happy.
Turpin story is very complex but the idea that everything is a great plan by UEFA to ready him for Lusail on 18th December is completely ludicruous, and literally couldn’t be further from reality!(!!)
Thanks for your detailed insights. You have followed him more closely than I did. Fully agree that some referees suffer from Čeferin's UEFA2022 guidelines than others. Special mention for Hategan and Siebert.
DeleteI still think Turpin will achieve something big in Qatar. Do you think he could get the opener?
It's not TURPIN FAULT, The QUALITY OF REFEREES AREN'T THE SAME, when you saw 2010 - 2020 Referees you will feel sorry for Who bad refereeing become. LAST DECADE WE USED TO HAVE GREAT REFEREES FROM ALL SIDES, CAKIR, KUIPERS, BRYCH, DE BEELCKERE, STARK, MAZIC, RIZZOLI, WEBB, CLATENBURG, ERICKSON, PROENCA, KASSAI.
DeleteThey all were capable to handle any game ( YES THEY DID MISTAKES BUT NOW WITH *VAR* REFEREES MAKE MISTAKES),, Which referee from current group can handle REAL MADRID vs ATLETICO SEmi final 2017 like CAKIR DID ( TRust me "" No One") So stop blaming TURPIN just because BOSSES LIKE HIM (:
Here is the Pravda-like UEFA.com article for this coming group stage:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/news/0279-160366f9e5a0-9e2236b56ada-1000--european-referees-primed-for-a-new-campaign/
Cutting through the euphemisms: UEFA22 nonsense will continue, we all know what "fingertip feeling" really means, and Rosetti literally trolls the refs in the final section ("ambassadors of UEFA" crap -> aimed at Makkelie in Madrid? ...). No room for serious people in the circus either, so if our anonymous writer is right (and he surely is), no surprise that Dallas gets ejected from the clown show. His services are better used at TFF than in the current Nyon comedy operation. If Mr Čeferin wins his election in 2023, we will have five more years of this refereeing (lack of) management... :/
You are the best, please be the one replacing Dallas!
DeletePerhaps I’m going to set the cats among the pigeons with this comment, but I often read on this blog Porto-Atletico last year on MD6 as an example of Turpin’s inability to handle hot clashes involving difficult teams to manage.
ReplyDeleteFirst, let’s establish the list of those potentially "hot" teams.
- PSG : Turpin can’t ref them.
- Real Madrid : 4 times on the last 4 seasons
- Barcelona : 2 times on the last 3 seasons
- Juventus : 2 times on the last 4 seasons
- Atletico : 3 times on the last 5 seasons, with a 3-year break due to the incidents versus Arsenal involving Simeone (handled perfectly by the Frenchman)
We could add Villarreal, Sevilla, Roma or Porto.
Furthermore, it’s quite strange that people remember this (in)famous Porto-Atletico as a failure for Turpin. I remember that the comments on this blog were actually positive about this performance, with strong verbal warnings, accurate red cards and a correct PK, all this in an impossible match to referee.
Turpin bashing is the national sport on this blog, along with Makkelie fanboying, and this is very annoying. I strongly hope Turpin gets something big in Qatar, because frankly he’s been at an excellent level continuously for 5 years now, and his career is "historical-mistake-free" - Makkelie’s is not.
I think there's quite a large Dutch audience on this blog where he has a reputation of one of the worst refs in Europe. About the 'historical-mistake-free' part; this is also due to luck. Turpin and Makkelie both made mistakes to Denmark's disadvantage at the EURO's (Turpin actually 2, Makkelie 1). However, it meant the end for Denmark in Makkelie's game, whereas they were able to overcome Turpin's mistakes and advance against Russia. Had Russia gone through, Turpin may not have had the CL-final last season.
DeleteTurpin has a shocker in the UCL final. Just because there where no major decisions, he was useless
DeleteTurpin is one average referee. If he was not French he would be 1st category not elite
DeleteWith respect totally nonsense of a comment
DeleteMr Turpin is a excellent referee
So what is your refereeing experience
Do you have a UEFA badge.
Or do you simply not like him as referee .———A

ReplyDeleteHalil umut meler is back after his injury
Monday 12.09.22
Besiktas-Basaksehir
Maybe CL GS match for him @chefren?
I actually had him as favourite for Real-Leipzig under Kuipers' observation, because I wasn't aware of the injury.
DeleteBut surely not next week then.
I would still expect him in CL GS though, maybe after an EL match to come back first.
Maybe he can start from Europa or Conference League before an appearance in Champions after a so long absence. That's how it works, unless extra-ordinary cases.
DeleteSerie A appointments: Orsato officiates on Sunday in serie A, so no Tuesday's CL for him, but Wednesday in case would be possible.
ReplyDeleteMariani totally out: I think he will finally appear in CL for his debut.
Given the observers in group F it could be one of these two games:
Shakhtar - Celtic Sajn (SVN)
Real Madrid - Leipzig Kuipers (NED)
Strange regarding Orsato: He can't work in groups E (Milan), G (Massa MD1) and H (Juventus). And the observers in group F don't really fit to him..
DeleteIndeed, it seems as we will hardly see him in Champions League. Reason can be only that his physical condition at moment is not the best, despite of having got some assignments earlier at the beginning of the season, with a serie B game. Indeed on Sunday he will officiate his first game in serie A.
Delete@ Chefren or others:
ReplyDeletecan the Englishman like Oliver referee a game in group F (e.g. Real Madrid - Leipzig) or is that not possible because of Celtic?
I think group H not possible after Taylor was assigned there yesterday.
Other possibilities for Michael Oliver: Leverkusen vs. Atletico or Bayern vs. Barcelona. This already means he has no German VAR!
Michael Oliver can get a match in Celtic group, but not the one involving the Scottish team. However, the observers for both games of group F on next week doesn't match with him, both committee members, different appointments are expected.
DeleteBayern - Barcelona is a possible option for him, otherwise Leverkusen - Atlético, but one can expect more for him... Plzen - Inter another option but not so much likely..
Ok! I predict him in München, VAR Kwiatkowski
Deleteelite ref Kulbakov (BLR) has no appointments at any group phase at any tournament. still, he has some at qualification rounds. also I don't see 1st cat Rumšas (LTU) who was 4th at Supercup, also at any tournament. smth weird
ReplyDeleteYou should wait the appointments of MD2 before saying that, Kulbakov is expected to appear in a game if he can be appointed, I think rather a minor one in Europa League.
DeleteFor Rumšas one can expect one oif the two games in group F on next week, already mentioned above, with committee members. Let's wait and see.
thanks a lot! sorry for not being logged in. smth weird happens, it's impossible to struggle through it, dunno
DeleteI've just watched João Pinheiro's performance in full. Very solid performance, surely at the 8.4 level. The game was a little bit more challenging than Ekberg's (more challenges from both sides) but, like Swede, he was very focused and ready to intervene whenever it was needed (no tolerance against dissent, time wasting, etc.). Another performance fulfilling UEFA's guidelines from the summer course - caring about game image, not allowing any unsporting behaviour (for example, in 61' we would never see yellow cards given before this season, the situation would be 'managed'; this season the referee's reaction should look like that according to UEFA).
ReplyDeleteI will try to upload refereeing highlights in the night or tomorrow.
OFR in Frankfurt: very interesting situation that shows us what committee wants to see this season, I think.
ReplyDeleteSliding tackle inside the box with a minimum contact at the tip of the foot, for Van Boekel this was a clear and obvious mistake.
To be honest I was also surprised by how quick the Dutch VAR was in taking this decision.
I would have expected this decision to be kept, but indeed maybe talking about an extremely soft call.
The lisbon player stepped on the Frankfurters foot. Not the other way round. So never a penalty. Good and correct intervention
DeleteFor me it was an absolutely correct intervention. Edwards steps on the defenders foot…
DeleteIndeed with a very high line for intervention, the penalty probably would have stood because of the existing contact.
DeleteBut surely the much better decision was taken and even very quickly, so everybody should be happy - except maybe Grinfeeld for getting it wrong in the first place. He also didn't look fully convinced, which could have helped with the decision to intervene.
The excisting contact... a contact is not automatically a foul....
DeleteThis penalty would have been surely confirmed on past seasons and I can add that, for those who are interested, making such intervention in Italy would create big polemics. Indeed Italian commentator was sure about the penalty and until the end he didn't understand the reason why it was removed. This is also because in Italy we have seen for years calls for every contact inside the box. It seems that committee has definitely started a new trend. Let's see the next incidents.
DeleteLets hope so. ;) penaltys should be clear "must give" not "can give" but it s only my opinion
DeleteI haven’t seen the incident, but it sounds like a good development if you ask me. If > 80-90% agrees that no-Pk is the best decision, but VAR can’t intervene because of a ‘contact’… In Germany they are also aiming for sth like this and I hope at the WC as well
DeleteOh yes, that must be the (correct) reason for removing it and not intensity of a contact. Tbh I didn’t notice that step on foot immediately, maybe the Italian commentator as well
Delete@Chefren, so would this mean that if this were Frankfurt - *random Italian team*, Van Boekel would be unavailable for further games involving Italian teams? It’s very worrying that the intervention criteria are the most different in Italy, while Italy is also the country in which media attention excludes you from Italian games for at least a year.
DeleteI think that after having watched the detail of attacker stepping on defender, the change of decision would be accepted, I hadn't seen that at first glance, so maybe the tones of my previous comments now can sound different... in case of soft touch but not stp on foot by attacker, I think this would have been confirmed by VAR.
DeleteAbout Grinfeeld, for me impossible to see this particular from his position outside the box, you see the classic sliding tackle apparently hitting attacker and you whistle, wouldn't blame him too much...
3-0 in Amsterdam after player’s shirt was pulled during a dribble. Good by Stieler to continue, shame that he didn’t show the Advantage signal :) Easy game so far
ReplyDeleteHardly any fouls, complete domination by Ajax playing great football, easy for Stieler
ReplyDeleteClear missed foul by Grinfeeld in 43', even quite close to reckless. Also overall, I am not too convinced by his foul detection today.
ReplyDeleteI am also not a fan of the YC to Ndicka, who was in possession before, so that the step on the foot was quite accidental. But still supportable decision.
What could we expect in the 2nd round... I tried to guess that a bit, thats what I got...
ReplyDeleteSporting - Tottenham Mateu Lahoz
Pilzen - Inter Sidiropoulos
Leverkusen - Atletico Gözöbüyük
Bayern - Barca Oliver
Liverpool - Ajax Siebert
Porto - Brügge Kulbakov
Glasgow - Napoli Gil Manzano
Marseille - Frankfurt Meler
Milan - Zagreb Zwayer
Donezk - Celtic Frappard
Chelsea - Salzburg Kruzliak
Juve - Benfica Makkelie
RealM - Leipzig Soares Dias
Kopenhagen - Sevilla Collum
ManCity - Dortmund Orsato
Haifa - PSG Sanchez Martinez
Orsato won’t get Man City again so quickly. I think we could see him in Israel
DeleteJuventus is in the same group, so no possible
DeleteOrsato's quality allows no doubts. No problem to give him Man City again.
DeleteGozubuyuk didn’t pass the LOTG test. We don’t know if he passed it already, but once he does I expect him in EL first. And he has a game on Sunday. Makkelie expected on Tuesday (Friday game). Meler was injured wasn’t he?
DeleteDon't think we will see Frappard in Donezk.
DeleteI do not even know who this Frappard is and where this city called Donezk is.
DeleteMy predictions (VAR in brackets)
DeleteLiverpool - Ajax: Soares Dias (Pinheiro)
Rangers - Napoli: Frankowski (Kwiatkowski)
Porto - Brugge: Treimanis (San)
Leverkusen - Atletico: Kulbakov (Irrati)
Viktoria - Inter: Sidiropoulos (Martins)
Bayern - Barcelona: Oliver (Kavanagh)
Sporting - Tottenham: Mateu (Martinez)
Marseille - Frankfurt: Hernandez (Higler)
Milan - Zagreb: Zwayer (Dingert)
Chelsea - Salzburg: Siebert (Fritz)
Donetsk - Celtic: Rumsas (Valeri)
Real - Leipzig: Guida (Mariani)
ManCity - Dortmund: Makkelie (van Boekel)
Copenhagen - Sevilla: Gözübüyük (Kamphuis)
Juventus - Benfica: Gil Manzano (de Burgos)
Maccabi - Paris: Sanchez (Dankert)
Difficult to appoint the groups, where German and Spanish referees are not available (i.e. A, B, C, F, G).
I think, I selected every referee, who worked in CL last season, but had no match on MD1 and is available next week. So every alternative would be a debut or a comeback.
In the predictions made above no referee will get games in both MD1 and MD2, but based on what we saw in the last 2 seasons at least, I dobt this will happen. Maybe I will try some predictions later.
DeleteGuida is injured. Mariani expected to make is UCL debit
DeleteOK, one more injury, I didn't know. In this case, I agree regarding Mariani as the logical alternative. Him or Nyberg should get the next debut.
DeleteI would then say for group F
Donetsk - Celtic: Mariani (Guida)
Real - Leipzig: Rumsas (Valeri)
Grinfeld losing control of his game imo. Easy game for Stieler
ReplyDeleteOh far away from losing controll by Grinfeld. Come on.... but not very clear in his decisions sometimes. This may cause trouble in 2nd half but not yet
DeleteIn other games he seemed to have more selfconfidence, taking clear decisions. His body language is a bit weak today, maybe he suffers from the wrong spotted PK
DeleteGoal by Rangers canceled after VAR - not a big mistake, but I think this one should have been detected on-field
ReplyDeleteSeems SAOT didn't work in Amsterdam, VAR used the old lines…
ReplyDeleteRegarding predictions, I was thinking that Bayern - Barca is not just a sonorous game on paper. This is a game with a story behind it. Probably the game that aroused the most media attention in my country (Lewandowski against his former club, Kahn’s grin).
ReplyDeleteIt’s a 50-50% between Oliver and Makkelie for me.
Arguments pro Oliver: the style of football suits him well. And perhaps, better to keep Makkelie under the radar for sth decisive?
Arguments pro Makkelie: incredibly low profile game in 2nd league on Friday (nr. 1 against nr. 9, no derby or whatsoever) which is pretty rare imo, and committee used him before in such high profile games. But tbf he is almost never used with these teams, so I’m not convinced at all. Could go either way :)
You also have to ask: If Makkelie gets this match, who gets ManCity-Dortmund? Maybe Soares Dias, but who gets Liverpool-Ajax then?
DeleteIMO there are too few available top referees left for the top games on MD2 to let Oliver not handle one of them.
Yes, fair point. I think we can also exclude Makkelie (MD2) for:
Delete- Sporting and Benfica game (another Dutch VAR after MD1 would surprise me)
- Marseille game (observer accompanied him in Trabzon)
Leverkusen, Bayern & Dortmund games are all possible.
Oliver will get either Bayern or Leverkusen
DeleteVery quiet comeback for Stieler, game was extremely fair. 1 YC correctly given, too bad about the necessity of VAR in the Rangers goal, expected performance apart from that
ReplyDeleteClear offside Rangers goal. Assistant should see minus VAR. His position very bad
DeleteI expected stronger reactions against three fouls in the first half (2', 6', 20') and the offside goal being disallowed quicker with SAOT in 71' but otherwise it was a very easy-going game for Tobias Stieler. Still good, expected level area in my opinion.
ReplyDeletePenalty by Del Cerro Grande, very quick in decision making. Correct call including a YC for having stopped a shot on goal.
ReplyDeleteVery well spotted by Del Cerro, didn't even notice it live personally
DeleteVery good decision, stupid from Milner. Good yellow card for Milner as well.
DeleteIt seems as he didn't book player, according to UEFA. It was reported in TV but I can't find confirmations. In case, would be strange, clearly directed on the net.
DeleteNow a correct YC but it would have been the second for the player! To be honest, big mistake if confirmed.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSecond penalty to Napoli via an OFR. Never VAR stuff this. Way too soft. Shocker from VAR
DeleteThat’s a seriously poor VAR intervention in NAPLIV. Oshimen is getting nowhere near the ball. He kicks it and then sticks a leg out!!
ReplyDeleteBoth decisions by VAR and the referee were totally correct—- A
DeleteWas Hernandez the VAR in the club World Cup final in 2019? He gave a howler of an OFR decision that day. Shocking, just pathetic if that’s a penalty then there will be 10 penalties every game
DeleteStamp on the foot, why does it matter that Osimhen is no where near the ball when Van Dijk is also no where near the ball and clearly catches him on the top of the foot, correct decision
DeleteCome on seriously? That’s such a bad decision. How is the striker ever getting to that ball? There’s no way that should ever be a pen. It’s not SFP, it’s already in the keepers arms really. If it was originally given maybe I could accept it, but not by VAR
DeleteHalf of the fouls in football involve the ball being no where in sight, at the end of the day it’s a foul that the referee missed
DeleteWhen you see Man United / Chelsea / most English fans complaining and saying Liverpool were unlucky, you know it was a poor decision. If that’s a pen and VAR is getting involved let’s have 10 pens a game. Where’s the high bar for pens and VAR gone?!
DeleteIMO we’ve sunk very deep if we consider this a correct penalty… Virgil can do NOTHING to avoid the contact, it’s the Osimhen putting his leg in the NORMAL running path of Virgil. For me a poor intervention, and a poor decision, not serving football.
DeleteHow can people claim this is not a foul when we see fouls such as the supposed one by Bowen on mendy given to deny a goal
DeleteBowen on Mendy is not a foul!!!! Everyone in England hates this is a foul! The PL have had to apologise for giving it!
DeleteBecause @Anonymous 21:28, Virgil does not do anything wrong. When running, maybe you’ve ever tried, both feet alternately have to land on the ground. That’s exactly what Virgil does, he does not change direction, he’s just running. It’s Osimhen making an unexpected movement, causing the contact.
DeleteExactly. In England that’s never a foul. Just 3 weeks ago liverpool conceded a goal from a foul in which Henderson was stood on. Deemed not a clear and obvious foul.
DeleteOne can indeed discuss about VAR intervention, I think Hernandez assessed it as step on foot but it is very soft, if you remember we discussed about Sampdoria - Lazio in serie A, Guida OFR proposed to Aureliano, this is maybe something a bit more, but still not a full step on foot if you ask me, and one could say that Osihmen put his leg under opponent's one. Not a clear situation. I think that this is the risk when you try to categorize the fouls.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it should have been a VAR intervention yourself Chefren?
DeleteHe gave the OFR almost immediately. One would think he was tricked thinking Osihmen was injured when he quite clearly was not.
DeleteBelieve it or not when someone stands of your foot especially near the toes it will indeed hurt a lot
DeleteNot as much as he made it out to
DeleteTo be honest, I think Samp vs. Lazio scene was *more* of a penalty than this one: defender saw the attacker running around the other side of him so trod on his foot. We became - and VAR obvs exacerbated it - too 'contact obsessed' when assessing scenes IMO. There is much more to evaluate when considering whether a foul has been committed or not! I don't blame the Spanish officials for this call as stated below but I note such decisions with sadness, personally.
DeleteI COMPLETELY agree with Mikael on this one, each and every word! It’s not about Del Cerro, not about Hernández, not about Virgil, not about Osimhen, it’s about FOOTBALL.
DeleteDell Cerro Grande blows his whistle far too much and he always has. Every contact is a foul. Watching la liga must be a chore
ReplyDeleteDel Cerro was clearly disappointed when he was informed about the OFR to be made, clearly he would have liked to avoid that. He tried to hide this feeling, but it was evident for me, also, the duration of OFR.
ReplyDeleteNAP - LIV Second Penalty
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/4ludzs
I'm sorry but some comments here are totally a joke. Please can someone of you explain what has to do that the striker can't reach the ball anymore? It's clearly steep on the foot ALSO clear tripping from behind with his left knee. OFR all night
I agrée, thé ball being gone makes it no less of a foul
DeleteIt’s just not a penalty. We look in slo-mo and it looks worse, but in real time it’s expected not to be a pen. It’s natural contact, the striker steps his foot across the defender after he moves the ball to a place he’ll never get it again. We can’t have pens like that in football
DeleteWhen a foul is made after the ball has been shot on goal or is out of reach, it has to be reckless to punish it. If this step on foot is considered a foul and reckless, the penalty would be correct.
DeleteBut, what makes this a foul? Virgil’s foot lands on Osimhen’s foot, BUT only because the attacker made a sidewise movement. Virgil was just making a normal run and didn’t change his running path.
I have the same issue. In slowmotion it looks a crystal clear penalty, in real speed it is a rather soft one
DeleteThanks for the clip Anthony (I'm not watching the game tonight).
DeleteIt is remarkable that the football sphere's ability to assess what is and isn't a foul has gotten (IMO) progressively worse in the last forty years: the counter-intuitive effect of many replays, slom-motions etc! I don't blame Del Cerro / Hernández (perhaps best VAR in the world IMO), really - maybe UEFA will, idk. But if SVKESP penalty is correct (intervention), WALUKR excellent play on is a clear mistake / missed OFR for them, and VARs were told to be more liberal this season, then it should be clear.
Unknown, no, it doesn't have to be reckless for it to be a foul after the ball has been shot. Stop making stuff up. It's a tradition to ignore clear fouls after a shot and this is a very bad thing. A foul is a foul. Has the ball been shot and a foul occurs it's even more of a foul since the ball isn't even close to the opponent.
DeleteAnd we obviosuly need some clear instructions and public statements by UEFA how such situations should be assessed.
DeleteIf many people think, it's a clear penalty and many people think, it clearly is not a penalty, something is not right.
Anyway, it suggests, that overall, it was not a clear and obvious situation, so nothing for VAR. Unless we try to defend it via "missed incident"..
For me personally, penalty is clearly the better decision. IMO, the attacker doesn't stick his leg out to win the penalty, but to play the ball. And the defender simply is late and must be more cautios, i.e. pull back, when he can't get the ball.
BTW, also interesting to know the reason for the YC: Reckless? Ball-oriented DOGSO? Not ball-oriented SPA?
I think, it could be all three options, but also not crazy to assess it a careless, ball-oriented SPA, i.e. no card.
But, the step on foot in England-Scotland (EURO’s) not whistled by Mateu was deemed a correct decision by committee.
DeleteI agree Philipp with the observation that the attacker’s movement was not to win the penalty but to win the ball, however I don’t agree on your statement that the defender is too late, as he doesn’t make any action which could be considered as ‘too late’. He’s just running and cannot disappear in thin air. Pulling back is not an option, considering lack of time im real speed (and not the slomo).
DeleteCan somebody explain what happened in Barcelona ?
ReplyDeletePen for Plzen + red card for DOGSO overturned due to an arm in the face of Barca defender as far as i’m aware
DeleteOverturned PK by Visser after OFR due to having missed immediately previous foul by attacker (reckless use of arm). Correct defensive FK + YC given.
DeleteGreat 1st half for Peljto
ReplyDeleteClear step on foot by Van Dijk.
ReplyDeleteRe the Van Dijk foul/penalty. For me the standing on a foot like that is always a foul, if we're just considering intensity. However, the moving of the attackers foot so far to the right in a way to initiate the contact is now generally seen as the attackers fault rather than the defender who is running in a straight line. I don't think there will ever be widespread agreement on these types of foul, but that step for me makes an OFR seem wrong
ReplyDeleteAnyone have reports on Marciniak performance so far?
ReplyDeleteBit of an off topic question but why is the review area in so many stadiums between the coaching zones? In Germany, for example, the review area is always on the opposite site. I've noticed it tonight again, it just causes way more issues with both teams trying to talk to the ref and see what's going on.
ReplyDeleteIIRC, at the beginning of the VAR era, the standard was to have screens on both sides, so that the referee can choose the one, that is nearer.
DeleteBut I don't know, whether this is the case in all CL stadiums.
Correct RC for DOGSO by Vincic, followed by a YC for dissent.
ReplyDeleteGood YC for Bailly, but if acting against dissent should be taken seriously, an immediate second one should have followed for his gesture when the card was shown (but could not really be expected in a CL match..)
DeleteVincic with an easy DOGSO red in the early 2nd half. But he had trouble getting the red out of his shorts and dropped it. Thankfully Spurs players rushed in to help pick it up and place it back in his hand!
ReplyDeleteVincic RC for Dogso
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/ox9aeg
Correct decision. Funny how Spurs nr 12 took the RC from the ground to gave it to Vincic :)
Still the behavior of Tottenham players can be blamed, after the foul you can see them asking RC, Vincic was not influenced and he had already this idea in mind, I'm sure, but this is never nice to be watched. I would have spent a very strong warning. That's also why player took the card to give him to referee, he was afraid he could have changed idea :D
DeleteAbout the decision itself, correct RC, but I have a feeling YC wouldn't have been questioned by VAR, due to the position where foul occurred and the fact that attacker had to change direction for the goal, also, the other defender looked to be out but maybe 99% and no 100% if you understand what I mean. However, by far more red card than many other grey situations we saw in recent times in UEFA games.
Watching Guadalupe Porras Ayuso in particular, very good so far, correct delayed offside flag right now and some ONSIDE before, as for now she has justified this appointment.
ReplyDeleteBlooper from AR1 in the Napoli game who just flagged for offside from a corner
ReplyDeleteFlagged for a goal kick as the ball went out directly from the corner
Delete63' Good no PK for handball by Turpin ( natyral position) quick check by VAR
ReplyDelete73' another very good flag by Porras Ayuso, she was in trouble when to raise the flag due to endless action, can't blame her in this case, even if the play was still at the edge of penalty area.
ReplyDeleteSorry but that’s rubbish from the assistant in Naples. Was never leading to a goal and was a clear offside, she looks like a bag of nerves. The other assistants doesn’t even know the rules.
DeleteShe acted according to UEFA guidelines, play in central position, player that can handle a promising attack, it was a correct decision to wait. Then, the fact that offside was evident, no matter, if early flag, possible troubles in case of wrong choice.
DeleteThe call by AR1 was not for offside at the corner..
Interesting situation for Peljto. Why OFR?
ReplyDeleteVAR: Guida, AVAR: Irrati
https://streamable.com/ypcett
Honda : clear off side
DeleteAgree that it could have been solved without OFR as Tah was clearly active, but the VAR team thought it was a matter of interpretation and preferred an OFR. But wow, how close was this offside position? Even with 3D animation, almost invisible.
DeleteTo check if punishable offside or not
DeleteMaybe they communicated on the field that another player touched the ball? But yeah, unexpected
DeleteI also thought, it was a matter of interpretation (Tah didn't touch the ball, did he?) and prefer the OFR here over the direct VAR decision.
DeleteExcellent decision for 2 YC card by Marciniak given
ReplyDeleteExcellent 2nd YC by Marciniak for a dive.
ReplyDeleteHONDA : off side clear
ReplyDeleteMarciniak is the maître of compensating for lost time!
ReplyDeletePoor game from Dell Cerro Grande. Incredibly inconsistent and random foul detection. Blows the whistle too many times as well. Looks like he wants all the attention.
ReplyDeleteMarciniak second YC:

Excellent decision...
Disallowed goal for offside:

Good performance from Marciniak I assume?
ReplyDeleteCorrect PK given to Porto by Marciniak for handball, very well spotted !
ReplyDeleteCorrect penalty and yellow card. Good YC for dissent 👏🏼
ReplyDeleteI could watch only the second half tonight and I chose too see Napoli-Liverpool. But I want to thank everyone here for the video links posted. Many interesting situations, definitely a more eventful evening than yesterday.
ReplyDeleteDue to many comments, better to continue in a new discussion, here:
