Maybe Carlos Grande will be a referee in City vs Dortmund match?
ReplyDeleteDoubt it, he was awful in Naples last week
DeleteDankert and Fritz are on VAR duty with Zwayer in Juventus vs Benfica on Wednesday. Interesting to see what changes
ReplyDeleteDingert and Osmers are with Siebert in M. Haifa vs Paris
DeleteSHA-CEL Nyberg (SWE)
ReplyDeleteMIL-DZA ?
RAN-NAP Mateu Lahoz (ESP)
CHE-SAL Kruzliak (SVK)
RMA-LEI Mariani (ITA)
CITY-DOR Orsato (ITA)
COP-SEV ??
JUV-BEN Zwayer (GER)
MHA-PSG Sierbert GER
Attwell VAR and Kavanagh AVAR in Copenhagen vs Sevilla. Won't be an English Ref with City in the group. Jesus Gill Manzano is the ref in Malan.
DeleteMIL-DZA Gil Manzano (ESP)
ReplyDeleteSome things stand out.
ReplyDeleteMateu Lahoz with Fritz and Dankert as VAR. No spanish VAR
But Zwayer also with Fritz and Dankert as VAR at the same day and time according to UEFA.com.
Also odd that Rangers-Napoli is scheduled for the wednesday instead of the tuesday when LIV-AJA is played in the same group.
Rangers- Napoli has been postponed by 24 hours due to policing issues due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth.
DeleteHernandez likely becomes VAR with Lahoz. His absence suggests that they are unhappy with his work in Naples.
The postponement of Rangers vs Napoli has caused this as it was scheduled for Tuesday when the fixtures where announced,
Yes, it seems they still have to find a last-minute solution for this...
DeleteThanks, missed that message that it was postponed
DeleteIncredible unexpected good games for Kruzliak and Mariani. Please do not rage that Gil Manzano is in Milan-Dinamo. An Elite here was more than expected here, because it is one of the few goups totally open for Spanish and German referees.
ReplyDeleteVAR made a terrible mistake im Juventus-Salernitana?
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/ForzaJuveEN
Yes confirmed, they missed Candreva position, read the previous discussion on the blog.
DeleteOk, I missed it. Tnx!
DeleteCopenhagen Sevilla: English VARs but no referee appointed.
ReplyDeleteVery strange, given that Attwell and Kavanagh are there, one could maybe expect Collum?
No English ref possible either. Very odd. Collum seems most likely.
DeleteIrfan Peljto in Copenhagen.
ReplyDeleteThis morning it was said on the radio that Gozubuyuk left the stadium yesterday back door to avoid the media and furious players of RKC Waalwijk.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore former FIFA referee Dick Jol stated on the radio that he has big doubts about the integrity of Gozubuyuk. He said: “He is too often surrounded by scandals and by making suspicious decisions”. Dick Jol repeated his words he mentioned also a few years ago in this article: https://www.soccernews.nl/news/314236/twijfels-oudarbiter-bij-goezuebueyuek-eerst-dat-pokeren-dan-dat-grote-huis
Last May Dick Jol stated more or less the same about the decisive penalty Gozubuyuk gave to Feyenoord which decided the championships: https://www.vandaaginside.nl/nieuws/oud-topscheidsrechter-dick-jol-verbijsterd-door-goezuebueyuek-voetbal
To be continued..
Who cares?
DeletePlease dont give attention too Dick Jol.
DeleteAgree. Ignore Jol + Van der Ende.
DeleteTheir time is over, but for some reason, they are always "seeking" media attention after controversial decisions of the current generation.
Yes, their time is over, but they have high level experience and insight that not many of us have. Also, if the same referee raises questions and doubts again and again, it cannot be just a simple coincidence... everyone had bad moments, but when it repeats...
DeleteSo you are writing to destroy a referee, why?
DeleteBig appointments for Nyberg and Mariani making their CL debuts.
ReplyDeleteKruzliak with a good appointment and rather unexpected imo.
Pejito again in CL after last week is remarkable.
Siebert and Zwayer in Group H, one of the only options for German referees. Is Zwayer ahead of Siebert again if we look at their recent appointments?
Finally, expected appointments for Orsato and Gil Manzano.
Peljto with the rare achievement of 4 CL MDs in a row (after MD5&6 last season).
DeleteThe delay suggests a replacement this week.
About Mariani, good to see him making his UCL debut, certainly deserved. I just think that his game might be a little bit too important to give it to a debutant. Hope he will be able to handle it without problems.
DeleteElite referees not appointed yet for CL GS after 2 MDs:
ReplyDeleteUnavailabile: Aytekin (retired), Gozubuyuk (failed LOTG test), Hategan (injured), Karasev (Russian sanctions), Çakir (retired) & Meler (injured)
Technical reasons: Kulbakov, Bastien, Collum (?)
I really think that Collum was in Copenhagen, but maybe for the issues that now are facing in the country, he couldn't travel to Denmark.
DeletePerhaps Peljto is replacement for Collum?
DeleteWOW I'm very surprised by the double appointment of Jovanovic, Sharer and especially Peljito who is not yet elite. Very strong focus by the committee on there 3 officials. Congrats. Hope to see back in CL Bastien and Collum; the frenchman doesn't deserve a too ig punishment like a demotion
Deletewhat are the technical reasons for BLR Elite Kulbakou? while there is no air connection between Belarus and Europe he successfully flew from LTU Vilnius (which is 170 km from BLR Minsk) in qualifying rounds.
DeleteAnd moreover, Kulbakou has an appointment in Rennes on the 15th of September in UEL Rennes (FRA) - Fenerbahçe (TUR)
DeleteGroup F with two debuts, so we have Nyberg and Mariani. For the Swedish and the Italian a very long path for maturing experience, before this step, differently from other referees who suddenly got CL assignments. That's something I don't understand, but surely both can say that they absolutely deserved that, and it is more fascinating for sure.
ReplyDeleteSiebert back in Champions League in one of the easiest games on paper, while Zwayer again used as "jolly" (depending on other German appointments). He is in my opinion by far better referee than Siebert. Let's see how he will officiate Juventus - Benfica, after the mess of yesterday in Juventus - Salernitana he could find a very challenging scenario.
Orsato expected with City given that now committee doesn't care anymore about two referees from the same country in a row for a team.
Gil Manzano in Milan: another Elite referee and I must say a very experienced one, I think that the win by Croatian side against Chelsea made things in the group even more complicated and committee doesn't want to take any risk, still very special treatment for Italian team, but in a context that all games are on paper extremely important. In this case one could expect easy win by Italian side but everything can happen.
Peljto can be a last minute replacement for Collum.
Finally, the treatment by Kruzliak: Rosetti has worked on the Slovakian, I think that he can ensure, differently from other Low Elite, quite decent performancs, so as long as he does well in such games, everything is OK. Let's not forget the situation for him and other well known names for Elite several months ago...
About VARs: still no Hernandez Hernandez, let's wait for tomorrow, but so far we could say that committee didn't like him in Naples...
Nyberg and Mariani probably the most expected names for a debut. I would not say, that they had a very long path, given they arrived at a notable UEFA level only 2 years ago.
DeleteA long path for me would be e.g. Dabanovic or Petrescu with several seasons in Europa League already. Maybe they have a chance for CL this season?
Hernandez also has an own career as referee. So he could be appointed in Europa League on the field and this would be explanation enough for missing as VAR this week, I think.
Good point about Hernandez. We will see with the appointments tomorrow.
DeleteChefren, important reminder Zwayer is back at Juventus, at Allianz Stadium after the famous Juventus x Lyon on August 2020. :)
DeleteHernández Hernández was still in Madrid today (seen in the press conference by the Liga F referees who are on strike).
Delete@Philipp Mariani and Nyberg very long path, if compared to Pinheiro.. that's what I wanted to say, then it is absolutely clear that there were referees in past with extremely long paths, years and years...
Delete@George But Hernández Hernández despite being from the Canary Islands committee currently lives in Madrid (as many LaLiga referees from all over the country do), in order to shorten their national and international travels.
DeleteI would have appointed Zwayer and Siebert vice versa. Zwayer had a pretty bad season start in Germany with basically a major mistake in every game he was in charge. Also, after the Makkelie incident, I don't approve appointing WC referees at PSG due to the political links between Qatar-FIFA-UEFA-PSG.
DeleteWho else is there for PSG?
DeleteKaer - my impression is that Siebert didn't start the season in great form either, is it yours? In Kazakhstan he was okay and not more, and he didn't convince me in Dortmund vs. Hoffenheim game really. I think injury (his athletic profile is not TOP anyway) + confidence gradually eroded last season and finally shattered at the end of Atlético vs. Man City, seem to be holding him back a bit.
DeleteContrary to Chefren, I see Siebert at the TOP but lacking some form atm, and Zwayer much more mediocre, unable to take control of players actions at any time I watched him through his career, but always okay at delivering normal-difficulty games giving a 'solid' enough impression to the more untrained eye (dykwim?), even if being consistently hesitant in KMI scenes.
I also looked back at Juve vs. Lyon as mentioned and it is funny the vigour with which I supported the Lyon penalty call. It was rightly supported by VAR crew but there is MUCH difference between this and eg. Osmers penalty last week, which was ostensibly lost on me back then. I mentioned before that Zwayer is forever in this endless loop in UEFA where his consideration goes up then down, and I dare suggest that he has started the cycle again...
DeleteBased on the games I watched, Siebert had a rather poor post EURO season but is slowly recovering. Other than the questionable/bad no hand call in BVB-TSG, his season start was solid. Certainly both better form and higher ceiling than Zwayer.
DeleteMaybe the reasoning behind this choice by the committee is to give Siebert enough time (and matches) to recover before the World Cup. Frankly, he gave me an impression of a mentally fatigued man at the end of last season, especially after Atletico - Man City CL QF, which is absolutely understandable. It would be a real pity if the committee "burned" a young and talented referee if the possible solution is to just give him some time to find his "balance" again.
DeleteTo add, I'm also of the opinion that Siebert is the German no. 1 at the moment and a better, more refined referee than Zwayer.
@Chefren; is it possible that the newest comments are published at the top of all comments? Much more easy and so it will improve the blog
ReplyDeleteI checked the options, it seems it is not possible.
DeleteZwayer back in Turin, first time since controversial Juve vs Lyon match.
ReplyDeleteArsenal vs PSV on Thursday- postponed
ReplyDeleteShock appointment we will see tomorrow:
ReplyDeletePartizan (SRB) - OGC Nice (FRA)
Referee: Rohit Saggi (NOR)
On the contrary, I think it's even expected that he gets a relatively important UECL game. Saggi has been under committee focus this summer with many qualifier games.
DeleteSaggi is currently in the UEFA Talents and Mentors program, so he will get preferential appointments.
Delete@Anonymous Do you know who else is in that program?
DeleteThere are some photos on Facebook. People who can recognize the referees & mentors will be able to let us know who they are.
DeleteAllard Lindhout
DeleteAlso the referee of Top Game PSV - Feyenoord this Sunday
Other top game: AZ - Ajax: Nijhuis
Where on Facebook?
DeleteLindhout for PSV-Feyenoord is a really weird appointment IMO. Undeserved too. Disappointing start of the season with losing control in NEC-Groningen, a ghost penalty in Fortuna-Utrecht and a missed RC (even with OFR) in AZ-Go Ahead Eagles.
Delete@19:35 why are you always talking negative about him? Lindhout has been in focus by committee. Did well in his League B match (Nations League), followed by a few assignments in conference league. Did you watch all those matches by any chance? Probably not. He is currently the Nr.3 of NL in UEFA matches and this assignment is completely in line with that.
DeleteDo you have a better idea?
DeleteHigler is the most hated referee in Rotterdam, Umlaut not possible after the negative buzz, Makkelie has officiated Ajax & PSV just 1 and 2 weeks ago.
Nijhuis in Eindhoven, Higler in Alkmaar was an option right? Other option: giving Kamphuis a chance. Has a better season than Lindhout so far
DeleteTbh Nijhuis didn’t have the best start either.
DeleteMy solution would’ve been Van Boekel in Eindhoven and Nijhuis in Alkmaar
DeleteGuadalupe Porras says that but she accepted the game in Champions League! Easy to talk.
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/rfef/status/1569282549939113985
AIA statement about Juventus - Salernitana: "The camera showing Candreva was not available in the Var room and therefore not usable by referees. ".
ReplyDeleteI don’t know if it’s the truth or whether they’re protecting the VAR, but this might be worse than ‘VAR forgot about the player and therefore made a severe mistake’, because this is technology failing and not a person. Zwayer should prepare a convincing story for the scenario in which VAR disallows a Juventus goal
DeleteThis is not technology failing it's still a person. He should have counted the players and found out one is missing. If you can't find the missing player you can't prove it's offside. Simple.
DeleteVAR/AVAR changes:
ReplyDeleteRangers-Napoli - Marco Fritz and Tiago Martins
Juventus-Benfica - Bastian Dankert and Pol van Boekel
and the AVAR for Milan-Zagreb?
DeleteIt's still van Boekel. He could do two matches in a row, but that wouldn't be a good idea, IMO...
DeleteAgree with you, George. Just because a referee doesn't run on the FoP, it certainly doesn't mean there is no mental fatigue involved, and keeping your full concentration for the duration of two entire games, with less than half an hour of rest between them, doesn't sound like a reasonable idea.
DeleteOne more thing: what happens if, for any imaginable reason, the first game doesn't end on time? Van Boekel is a very good VAR, but he certainly can't replicate another copy of himself.
All of this gives an impression that UEFA does not have enough reliable VARs, which is nonsense IMO.
Another Spanish remark is about De Burgos, he could have worked as VAR this week, but committee seems to have different ideas. At moment, I agree that he can't get more than fourth official role. In many occasions, he was poor, both as referee and VAR.
ReplyDeleteGood remark. He even is VAR at the World Cup, so one would expect CL appointments for him.
DeleteThe situation of French football seems to be definitely out of control, now again three red cards in Metz - Guingamp, I don't know what happened later, it is just reported that referee was forced to stop the game for his safety, according to some sources.
ReplyDeleteThe three sending-offs issued by Pierre Gaillouste:
DeleteRC for insults/aggressive behaviour after YC.
https://streamable.com/eev1bs
PK + RC for SFP:
https://streamable.com/zalrxh
RC for SFP (absolutely disgusting attack):
https://streamable.com/dwppn2
From the intel gathered by the French broadcaster, some home fans verbally assaulted the referee, who has decided to stop the game, his safety being no longer guaranteed.
1. I wonder what the player has said, because the behaviour doesn’t give a reason for a straight RC.
Delete2. Very soft RC IMO, YC would be fine.
3. Fully justified.
In general, I see that the bar for a RC is really low.
First situation: another example of, I have to say it, disgusting behaviour by the offending player. All of this after a clear YC. Inexplicable behaviour from an adult person who, as an athlete, should be a role model for younger generations. Sad, very sad.
DeleteSecond: Soft RC, it seems normal in France, but I'm not sure if it would have been given elsewhere. I prefer a YC here.
Third: a brutal tackle. How a player can try something like this on a colleague is something I can't understand. RC beyond any doubt.
These tackles were always there, just there was not VAR before to punish those tackles.
DeleteAlso, style of their refereeing is way too often way too lenient,so sometimes there is no wonder that players think they can do whatever they want and not to be sent off .
1. The behavior doesn’t give a reason for a red card? Are you laughing here ? Clear violent attitude with head approaching ref’s one at 10 cm. Clear and brave RC, fully justified for TV commentators indeed.
DeleteCompletely disagree Chefren. 3 brave decisions by young promising referee Pierre Gaillouste. Perhaps a little bit hard for goalkeeper but high foot on attacker so supportable call.
DeleteLet's clarify, I didn't want to say anything against referee, just the fact that we have so many red cards and even games are suspended is so frequent that this is not normal! Players behavior must be blamed, sorry if I was not clear...
DeleteSo how can you make comments with out watching the game
ReplyDelete.m
Can someone find the clip of RC to Akpro in Empoli-Roma really poor decision for me, very difficult situation for Marinelli once he decided not to show a SYC and therefore a really bad OFR for a straight red, never a straight red card - same conclusion but now the ban will be larger and wrongfully
ReplyDeleteHe also did not have clear linefor whistling fouls and booking players.
DeleteAlso, nnot giving penalty to Empoli after foul that produced blood was really surprising to me.
A shocking matchday for serie A has come to an end.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to Juventus - Salernitana, there were incredible mistakes in Lecce - Monza (Pairetto), missed two penalties for handballs. No explanation for missed VAR intervention. The VAR was a new one, so this can be explained by the lack of his experience in the role, but still impossible to accept. There aren't arguments for supporting referee, if not saying that VAR didn't work.
Then, several OFRs in other games, like Empoli - Roma and the very clear missed yellow card by Marinelli. But what happened in Turin and Lecce will stay without words for a long time..
