  1. Good to see Andrew Mandley leading the English team 🔥

  2. I try to write down a "categorization" of such appointments, you can of course disagree and please don't blame. :)

Normal assignment, no development, just games for experienced (or, "aged") Cat. 2:

Panathinaïkós AO (GRE) - SK Dnipro-1 (UKR)
    Referee: Bastian Dankert (GER)

NK Olimpija Ljubljana (SVN) - PFK Ludogorets 1945 (BUL)
    Referee: Christian Dingert (GER)

Astana FK (KAZ) - GNK Dinamo (CRO)
    Referee: Dennis Higler (NED)

KRC Genk (BEL) - Servette FC (SUI)
    Referee: Novak Simović (SRB)

FC København (DEN) - Breiðablik (ISL)
    Referee: Fabio Maresca (ITA)

    Development:

FK BATE Barysaŭ (BLR) - Áris Lemesoú (CYP)
    Referee: Morten Krogh Hansen (DEN)

Qarabağ FK (AZE) - RKS Raków Częstochowa (POL)
    Referee: Sven Jablonski (GER)

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SVK) - HŠK Zrinjski (BIH)
    Referee: Jérémie Pignard (FRA)

Molde FK (NOR) - HJK Helsinki (FIN)
    Referee: Igor Pajač (CRO)

Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR) - FC Sheriff Tiraspol (MDA)
    Referee: Damian Sylwestrzak (POL)

Galatasaray (TUR) - FK Žalgiris Vilnius (LTU)
    Referee: Willy Delajod (FRA)

    Unclear:

BK Häcken (SWE) - KÍ Klaksvík (FRO)
    Referee: Andrew Madley (ENG)

Bertrand Layec for the English could be listed among "development" observers, but the situation with English officials in UEFA after Oliver and Taylor is still not clear. Who will be the next Category 1? Given that Pawson and Kavanagh seem to be both at the maximum in Category 1. In my opinion many years are passing without trying a real development of somebody after Taylor and Oliver...

    1. I think that it's unclear regarding Higler and especially Simović. Einwaller is a young observer whose importance rose in Rosetti era, imo.

  3. I want to be stricter and more rigid than you Chefren, in my opinion the only two in the group who are well on their way and certain of future developments are the two French ref. I don't know the Polish guy and I will try to find out.

    1. No Pita Falta. Jablonski (GER) is a very good referee!

    2. Jablonski nothing special in u19 final. It was just okaish, I wasn’t impressed after the many cheering comments before the final.

    3. He is a young referee and he will go ther way.

  4. Panathinaikos - Dnipro-1
VAR - Sascha Stegemann AVAR - Benjamin Brand (GER)

    Olimpija - Ludogorets
VAR - Pascal Müller AVAR - Mike Pickel (GER)

    BATE - Aris
VAR - Jeroen Manschot AVAR - Clay Ruperti (NED)

    Slovan - Zrinjski
VAR - Pierre Gaillouste AVAR - Eric Wattellier (FRA)

  5. 12 matches of the Champions League - 3 German teams of referees. It's too... 🤔🫣😮

  6. Normal political appointments. Only use the big 5 countries. Plenty of fantastic refs from all the small nations

  7. Olimpija-Ludogorets
AR1 with four offsides, two mistakes in first 15 minutes already, one quite blatant in 4' (attacker 1 meter behind the defender). I don't understand why he signals offside immediately instead of waiting in the VAR system. At least three situations were tight and then one against one with goalkeeper.

    1. Looks like an eventful game overall (4 YCs against the same team in the first 15 minutes, RC, last minute VAR penalty).
Refereeing highlights would be appreciated. :)

    2. Straight RC for off-the-ball violent conduct, very likely reported by Fourth Official:

Penalty after OFR in the very last minutes of the game:

1:36 of the video, Pignard conceded the advantage and rightly failed to whistle for a foul. The advantage turned, as it should, into a dangerous Bratislava attack that culminated in the 2-0 goal. Good call by Pignard, these things make the difference between a good referee and a less good one.

  9. Jovanovic appointed for Sutrm-PSV (3rd round CL 2nd leg) and will be observed by Hugh Dallas. Important match for him after that already famous England-Italy. Most interesting appintments at the moment are for Panathinaikos-Marseille (Kovacs and Oliver).

    1. Furthermore, Rosetti is appointed for Supercup, at least we know it is nobody from Italy (although I think nobody expected referee from Italy in Supercup).

      Delete
    2. So it seems that appointment for Super Cup has been made, and indeed on past years it had been already revealed long time before today's date (2 August), but this time UEFA still keeps it confidential. A surprise? I still think Soares Dias the very expected name.

    3. Yes this would be a very nice appointment for the Slovakian, trying to put him again in a very good shape, committee has worked a lot on him. I tink he can get a certain trust at moment if compared to past, but the big step is of course still missing.
Given some past but not all the recent assignments of Super Cup, this appointment would be still possible but definitely not expected. It will depend on how committee wants to present the new season.

    4. It’s Letexier team for super cup

  10. OFR after 6 min in GNK-SFC for Simovic (SRB). He missed one SFP. RC gived after OFR. Ref looks unsure of himself, stressed :/

    1. Now, good PK whistled by Simovic for Genk (GNK-SFC) 26' min. Challenging game

  11. I've been impressed by Damian Sylwestrzak in Israel. Calm but also authoritative in a hot game. 2 cautions for dissent too

    1. Wery impressive performance. At least 3 YC's for dissent, 12 minutes additional time... But I think he should whistle a PK without OFR.

    2. It was the first big test for the young Pole. Nice to hear that he did well!

  12. Nice football game in Baku. Jablonski with a typical German style: heavy running, lenient disciplinary control, foul detection was not the best (some clear fouls missed, some soft FKs given). Two interesting handball penalty appeals from both teams (16', 24'), both rejected. All in all, the young German didn't lose control, was respected and we can say about overall decent performance. Good for him!

    1. Good to hear indeed because on paper this could have been a difficult game for a referee with German style. We will try to find clips of the incidents.

    2. For me penalty - arm is in unnatutal bigger position.

    3. Yeah, after rewatching it now, I think it should have been a penalty. Arm making body unnaturally bigger. That the ball slightly deflected from the leg shouldn't matter, imo, as the ball was still going on goal. Funny that nobody protested.

    4. Absolutely natural arm position, due to the movement. No punishable handball!

  13. Red card for substituted player in Israel. Good to see a no nonsense approach to dissent

    ReplyDelete
  14. Red card for Zalgris overturned after OFR. For me, it's not a rc, as the point of contact is minimal. Whether its a clear error is another debate

  15. Vary good job by Sylwestrzak in Israel in challenging game. Good debut in Champions League.

    2. You are wrong. OFR is good team work. Of course, it is optimal to make a good decision without OFR, but not every OFR is a crucial mistake
