  1. Green light for Russian delegates but not for observers and referees.
Big plans for Nalbandyan (ARM): a debut in Conference League group stage seems the target, after this preparation.
Martin Atkinson, new UEFA observer, will assess Chrysovalándis Theoulí (CYP). Gishamer (AUT) with in my opinion the best game of the round.

    1. Forgive me if I am wrong Chefren, I have a feeling that this could be an insight into UEFA’ next new group of referees to keep an eye on. With exception of the a couple of the big countries (Fabbri ITA and Frankowski POL etc) the small nations (Armenia, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Malta etc) will surely be in the eye sight with these important second leg matches, the final match before the safety of VAR

    2. But why send a First Group referee to Besiktas - Neftchi Baku?

      Delete
    3. Similar to using Vad maybe. Having a run of poor matches so using these games to avoid using him in crucial matches?

      Delete
    4. Vad is 2nd Group. He was demoted.

    5. I think PAOK vs Hajduk is by far the most difficult match of the round, 0:0 in the first leg, equal strength teams and very hot atmosphere expected esp keeping in mind tragic events before AEK vs Dinamo Zagreb match. Tough test for Stegemann

    6. Russians? Really…

  2. Again very funny appointment for Istvan Vad, after his demotion he get another “big match”, I wonder why Nalbandyan with Carballo couldn’t get this game, how we should read this appointment in terms of if we compare another match with “more potential” officials? IMO it seems normal appointment but again something ridiculous is going on.

  3. I disagree with Chefren, IMO the best game in this round on paper is Dumitru Muntean (MDA) in Sofia, did you forget Kovacs in trouble in Sofia last season, anyone know who is Muntean?

    1. Muntean has been regularly doing 1 or 2 GS appointments over the last seasons. Good referee in my opinion.

  4. Genc Nuza again, after also being present at the u19 EURO as a fourth official. There does seem to be some focus on him.

  5. It took less than 7 minutes before 1st very debatable situation occurred in Premier League. For me it was penalty for Burnley, clear long holding and Akanji let the player's arm when GK was close to take the ball. Refereeing in PL is really annoying me every game!

    1. If Pawson call the incident for a penalty, IMO it would be very very soft.
If every game of EPL annoyed you, why you still watch them? Where’s your logic? Without you EPL still the best football league in the world, despite I admit the referee often made debatable decision, but I believe Howard Webb will make it different.

    2. I don't think that it reached the threshold of clear and obvious for intervention. (I'm not that convinced it was a foul by current English standards). It's not been talked about in England and seemed to be accepted. Only other note was Oliver having to intervene to upgrade the only onfield card of the game to a red in the 92nd min for SFP. Otherwise a fairly straightforward game, well officiated

  6. I think that in Conference League's matches, referee from the top 6-7 leagues should not be assigned.
At least until the group stage is over.

  7. Stegemann,Muntean,Frankowski,Stieler Kavanagh,Stavrev...

I could go on and on cause plenty matches are nowhere near finished but I think that these refs have matches that can get very complicated.

Out of these that were mentioned I would like to isolate firs 2,Stegemann and Muntean, who have not just close score, but very hostile crowd.

Stegemann will have typical Greek hostile crowd but also situation that happened this week in Greece between Dinamo's,Panathanaikos' and AEK's fans will add more fuel and game will be even more electric.

And Muntean,as Anonymus wrote, also very hostile crowd in Sofia, typical Balkan atmosphere and match and also we have completely open game,so it will be interesting to watch.

Stavrev also has tricky match, can easily turn out to be card fest when he is around.

Couple months ago some people commented that he is near retiring,so maybe this is his last match?

    Who knows...

  8. OT: chairman of Austrian referee department retired during the season - Sedlaschek!
Interesting to see that Plautz is still not in a leading position for so many years.

    Do anybody knows the reason(s)?

    1. The new chairman is Viktor Kassai.

So if someone is a religious person you don't respect him/her? What logic is that...

    5. I'm curious whether Plautz will continue being a UEFA observer. As recently as last week he was observing Balakin in 1st leg of Zalgiris - Häcken.

  11. Wrong PK + DOGSO RC by McNabb in Midtjylland vs Omonia. Danish player clearly dived.

    1. Not a good performance overall by the referee. Management and control was sub-par in the first half. He was lucky that the second half became an easy affair as Omonia had given up.

      Delete
    2. I don't think it was a dive but yeah penalty looked soft, better decision was "no foul".

  13. Ruddy Buquet in MKS Pogoń Szczecin (POL) - KAA Gent (BEL)

    - Good no-penalty call in 28' (Gent player could have been booked for simulation, his opponent had something to say to him and conflict occurred, Pogoń player booked afterwards)

    - Missed two mandatory yellow cards to João Gamboa (POG) in 13' for reckless studs challenge and Stolarski (POG) in 90+3' for SPA/LoR holding (deliberately not given due to result of the tie?).

    - Normal game to referee, Buquet used his experience and maybe his motivation was not at highest level but he delivered a decent game.

  14. César Soto Grado in FC Spartak Trnava (SVK) - KKS Lech Poznań (POL)

    - No key match incidents but instead a large number of duels to assess for the Spaniard. Eleven yellow cards and mass confrontation at the end say something.

    - Slovak team played a very physical, sometimes rough football. Soto Grado didn't react well to some 'more-than-careless' challenges what only inflamed the atmosphere.

    - Instead of adapting his style to the physical character of the game, Soto Grado wanted players to adopt his high threshold for a free kick being awarded. That didn't work well in this game, many protests and retaliations were present. In 40' he was most likely wrong with a throw-in direction and Spartak Trnava players were really furious. He managed the scene in a very authoritary manner - two yellow cards for dissent - what didn't bring him fans among players.

    - It's a Spanish thing that I really don't like - lack of good public warnings. It's only a FK or a YC, nothing in between. Add to that Soto Grado's manner to whistle and think about potential disciplinary sanction, always taking his time before making a decision, and you have an image of passive referee. I'm surely not a fan of such style.

    - While there was no problem with lost time compensation in the first half (four minutes rightly added), eight minutes added to the second half were about right, the real problem was the lost time compensation during the added time of the second half. Substitution, blatant time wasting plus mass confrontation and the added time was prolonged only for a minute - three extra minutes would be reasonable.

    - So, while almost all bigger decisions were correct, the manner the game was handled by the referee was not optimal, imo. Still a decent performance, though.
