  1. Looking at the aggregate and how the situation in Greek football recently, IMO perfect appointment for Orsato in Athens. Nothing to add for the others, all very experienced referee, just maybe Vincic with Rizzoli, is it normal “pair”?

  2. Szymon ended the previous season with the final in Istanbul and starts the next one in Istanbul, good luck to all teams

  3. OT: Interesting situation in Croatian league, Duje Strukan issued a direct RC for SFP. He was invited for OFR, but didnt change his decision.

Supportable RC and wrong VAR intervention or RC was too harsh?

    1. IMO YC is enough, RC is too harsh

    2. Imo correctly analised by VAR, Strukan should've changed his decision at the monitor, I can understand that he made the mistake live considering he's too close to the incident, but there is no excuse to not change it after OFR

    3. Oh I read too fast, correct by Strukan, wrong by VAR ;p

    4. Also regarding Croatian referees, yesterday Fran Jovic (UEFA 1->2) was back to the pitch for the first time after march in the 1st league. Solid performance and alertness, hopefully he will be back to his good form and regular appointments

    5. Debatable incident IMO, could be red or yellow.

    6. Correct RC, never VAR.

  4. High speed, high strength, exposed cleats on the right foot, direction on the upper ankle and no intention to lower the foot. Right red for me, wrong VAR

  6. OT: Just stucking in my mind, with the recent controversy, can you mention countries other than England that do not broadcast a coin toss where the referee is usually highlighted at the beginning? I think it was global standard for football broadcasting to show who is the referee, but if I remember correctly only EPL didn’t to that.

  7. Good luck to Szymon Marciniak and his team

  8. OT: 5 minutes in NEW-LIV, can we support Brooks decision to not booked 2nd YC for TAA?

    1. And Van Dijk gets direct RC for DOGSO...

    2. IMO, rather not, I think it was a pretty clear YC. However, his first YC was, said with all respect, wrong for me. I'm still trying to understand the reason for it, but if it was for dissent, I have to say I don't see anything particularly dissenting in Alexander-Arnold's actions there. Of course, I may be wrong, but I do have a feeling Brooks had a wrong perception of the incident, which influenced him in assessing the second incident the way he did. Unfortunately, two wrongs don't make a right, but as I said, it's just my opinion.

As for the RC to Van Dijk in 28', it was a spot on decision by Brooks, IMO. The foul was obvious and in a clear DOGSO situation. I think it's a textbook example for DOGSO.

    3. The first yellow was for throwing the ball away onto the pitch, thus delaying the restart, which was a throw in. So that was correct, however it wouldn't have happened if the foul had been given as the push on him was the reason he was off the pitch to begin with

    4. Yes, you're right, Daniel. Rewatching it, a correct DtR decision, but I somehow didn't perceive it to be that clear initially. It turns out it's not the best idea to watch the game and write an official e-mail at the same time. And yes, I forgot to mention the push; I agree it was a missed foul that led to everything.

  9. Why no Sokolnicki in Marciniak's team?

  10. OT: Saudi Pro League foreign appointments today

    Week 4
    Al Nassr-Al Ettifaq
Ismael Elfath, Kyle Atkins, Cole Parker - Chapman (all USA)
    Al Ahli-Al Tai
Fedayi San, Stefan De Almeida, Bekim Zakaj - Lionel Tschudi (all SUI)

    1. For SUI readers and the others, IMO strange appointment for SUI crew, where is Schaerer?

    2. Elfath will encounter CR7 again!

    3. Promotion to elite, have many good appointments last season and out of sudden after reportedly injury missing all UEFA/international appointments.

      Delete
    4. Sorry Al Nassr-Al Shabab*

    5. Really strange appointment. One remembers the POR-GHA penalty and wonders: Would Elfath be appointed on a game like this if he had not given that decision? Is there a chance that whoever is making these appointments would have seen it as too controversial in such a situation? Since these appointments are always ad hoc, the answers to these questions cannot be known, which (in my view) highlights the ethical problem with the ad hoc "referee for hire" model that these foreign appointments seem to take.

Also notable that Chapman is not (and has never been) a FIFA referee. And you have used the wrong name for AR2, it is "Corey" Parker, not Cole.

    6. I think Chapman is VAR and not fourth official, he is a FIFA VMO

    7. Looks like this was challenging match.

3 penalties, 7 yellows,1 red card,1 anulled goal and many other things.

Elfath and Ronaldo are great couple. 😀

    8. Ah, I see Elliot, thank you for the clarification.

    9. 3 OFR for Elfath in Saudi. The second one big mistake…. How this referee can be a possibility for WC26 final!!!

      Delete
    10. It must be said that the three penalties to Al Nassr are all quite correct.

The red card incident really is something. I have two SFP tackles in the space of a few seconds by two different Al-Shabab players. Crazy stuff.

    11. Check minute 19, this is not for a WC referee

  12. Imo RC missed by Orsato in 65'. Really surprised there was no VAR intervention.

  13. Was the caution for MOL#9 (96’) appropriate or should he be sent off for the forceful studs on ankle tackle in Galatasaray vs Molde?

    1. Appropiate imo.
It wasn't high and there was no strong force in that tackle.

  14. Looks like great evening for all 3 officials.

Vincic's game was easier due to score, but still he remained focused.
Orsato as usual class in hostile enviroment, all 6 YC's and 1 Rc were spot on.
Marciniak also had a good game, one could argue that he potentially missed RC in 1st half, but VAR did not call him.

So all and all, good night for officiating.

  15. Not the best Orsato this night in Athens if you ask me. However he was good enough to keep under control a tough match.

  16. OT: van Dijk's RC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE_T1KNniTA) shows the state of the game these days in that a world class player apparently can't see how obvious this DOGSO foul is and then abuses one or two referees afterwards, as is the case with so many players these days complaining about clear textbook fouls. But then again, how many players do know the rules properly at a younger age? Also, Mike Dean saying he didn't send Anthony Taylor to an OFR because he was a mate (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/aug/26/mike-dean-anthony-taylor-referee-mate-comment-blown-out-of-context) shows part of the problem with Premiere League refereeing: I think the training the referees there are receiving has diverged from what UEFA wants in CL matches as evidenced by the fact that British referees haven't been appointed the biggest CL matches in a while. I think sometimes the norms or expectations for referees in a domestic league can differ so much from the norms in UEFA or the international game that referees have a hard time going between the three and it hurts their performances in the latter competitions.

    1. This is just not so true!!!! The English Officials in Oliver and Taylor has been used so much in big matches and final only the VAR has been left out. Please go and check well

    2. Which Latter competition in UCL?? They are always ruled out because of the exploit of English teams in the UCL, for the past 3 years English teams have made it to the Final of the UCL but have subsequently got the most final appointments out of any nation in that period which includes 2 Super cup final, 1 Europa league Final, 1 nations league final, 1 club World Cup final and not to mention consecutive quarter final appearances in both the World Cup and Euros.. UEFA and FIFA certainly use what you stated as any merit evident in those appointments.

    3. That's a good point about English teams in the Champions League final stages, but I don't think Oliver gets top appointments and there were no British refs at the 2018 men's World Cup (https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/37553682/mark-clattenburg-accepts-part-blame-no-british-refs-world-cup).

Despite of an extremely challenging game, the same feelings I had after his first display at World Cup, not a strong referee, struggling too much to gain authority, players not caring him at all (see the attempt to call coaches and players after crucial incidents, nobody followed him).

    1. Am I the only one, who thinks that there were incorrect decisions in first two incidents?

      Delete
    2. Of course they were incorrect decisions. Not punishable handball and that "offence" obviously looked like compensation. The third attempt of VAR was finally correct.
