  1. German Supercup on Saturday
Bayern München - RB Leipzig: Bastian Dankert, Rene Rohde, Marcel Unger, Tobias Reichel - Tobias Welz, Thorsten Schiffner
Second big game for Dankert this summer after the Bundesliga play-off 2nd leg in May.

  4. Thank you Euro Soccer Ref! I think Alberola Rojas is the referee to watch this season in La Liga.
A good referee in my opinion.

  5. A comment about VAR assignments: it looks like Bebek is going to be a very specialized VAR, always appointed, mostly with countrymen's crew, but also for referee from other nations, he can become a very reliable name for UEFA and FIFA in this role after retirement.
Interesting also to underline Kwiatowski (WC Final VAR) with Jovanovic and maybe Lopes Martins assignment one day before Super Cup means that Artur Dias will not be the man in the middle for the trophy? We will know tomorrow...

  6. Two interesting incidents from Coppa Italia game Cosenza - Sassuolo, referee Giuseppe Collu (a new serie A and B referee promoted this season).

OFR for changing RC in YC (genuine attempt): https://streamja.com/KBANy

    A classic handball OFR:
    https://streamja.com/5mg3q

The first incident is very interesting because a referee can be indeed easily deceived in such scenario, in my opinion key factor for assessing YC is the attempt by defender with right foot before the subsequent contact, and this makes it an attempt to play ball.

  7. Also an interesting potential handball in Chelsea v Liverpool around 52' with Taylor not asked to go to the monitor by England. Arm was raised, but close to the chest. In England I'd say not handball was probably correct, but wouldn't be surprised if others view it differently.
Taylor also being in-line with England's new standards by booking both players who waved an imaginary card, and being strict on DtR.
One question I do have is regarding coaches being dismissed. I know in England a coach now must now go to the changing room and cannot enter the stand or be in sight of the pitch (or take part in post match interviews). Is this another English specific thing or a global one? Thanks

    1. You wont believe it, but Roma fans are still discussing about him after this handball incident in today's game, stating "He did it again...".

      Delete
    2. I mean, that’s (sadly) pretty normal. Lahoz still makes headlines in the Netherlands with basically anything he does (and it’s not positive), kind of the same with Turpin (though more so with fans than media)

      Delete
    3. The only difference is that mateu and Turpin really had shockers involving Feyenoord and Netherlands, whereas Taylor did everything he could do to let it go right... however especially AS Roma behaved abismal during the EL final. I hope that the Italians burn up their own (worse) refs as fast as they do with the international ones who are far better then their mediocre italian ones.

      Delete
    4. Chefren, I start believing you’re a fan from the other (minor) side of Rome. Believe it or not, Taylor is “not loved” as well in England. Yesterday a cup of water was thrown to him after the match. Petitions are online since before the Roma match. Both Chelsea and Liverpool fans were angry at the designation, so you can stop these silly jokes. Still waiting for an honest assessment of the other incidents in the UEL final, but given your comments since then I’m not surprised

  8. OT: As expected, Barcelona vs Getafe coached by José Bordalás looks like a Conmebol derby. It's HT and we already had many confrontations, interruptions, too many off the ball pushes and small punches by Getafe players and all kind of classic shenanigans of mobbing and time wasting.

Very difficult task for Soto Grado, who correctly sent off Raphinha in 42' for VC (punch in retaliation against one of said off the ball pushes by Getafe defenders) after AR1 input.

    9. He wasnt late to blow there were a number of stoppages during the added time

      Delete
    11. Sorry but Bordalas manages his team that way,and it has been succes for him and Getafe.
As football fans,we can be disgusted by his tactics and his defensive way but he has had results with Getafe and with that style...
Also, refs need to adapt and to punish those fouls cause you saw 1 game, but I'm sure that's going to be the way how Getafe plays entire season.

  16. Manchester United vs Wolves last night, 96 minutes, VAR didn’t overturn initial decision of Simon Hooper to award a penalty, now seems like they’re dropped for this coming fixture

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. PGMOL confirmed Hooper, Salisbury and West have not been selected.

      Delete
    2. "The PGMOL, the referees’ body, has stood down referee Simon Hooper and the two Video Assistant Referees and apologized for the failure to award Wolverhampton Wanderers a penalty in their 1-0 defeat by Manchester United. Hooper, VAR Michael Salisbury and assistant VAR Richard West have all been overlooked for next weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures."

So, holding referees accountable for their mistakes is not that hard. Neither is being transparent and open with the masses. Even if it means calling out your referees for their mistakes. Now if other Referee Committees would follow suit, that would be brilliant.

      Delete
    3. I see that the Spanish Referee Committee has the opposite approach. As it has been completely silent after this weekend's debacle.

    4. Here the incident (I was curious after reading):
      https://streamable.com/fyvczq
Once missed the ball, clear contact by keeper with attacker. Such situations look always particular. If you have a normal player (I mean, not the keeper) making such action, you can be sure it will be penalty, but with keepers things seem to change. This should be the reason why Salisbury was reluctant, but I think that all referees should be urged to treat keepers like the other players.
Would be interesting to know the reason of the assessment by English VAR, I would say "Not enough", but it doesn't fit in this case...

      Delete
    5. Also, interesting to take a look at fourth official talk with coach, after the incident. Trying to read gestures, I would dare to say that according to his opinion, it was a normal collision between players?

      Delete
    6. Not too difficult to find reasons, why VAR didn't intervene:
      1) As you write, such situations are particular and I don't think, there is a clear expectation this is a foul as it often is (or at least quite similar actions are) ignored by referees. This doesn't really point to a clear and obvious situation
      2) Kalajdzic also misses the ball and is still moving forward. So there is a argument for saying, this is a collision between two players, jumping into each other after both having missed the ball
      3) The referee had a clear view of the situation. So what are the chances, that he comes to a different conclusion during an OFR?

I completely understand, that it is technically a clear foul, but I also understand the doubts of the VAR, possibly due to one or more of the three reasons.

  17. The game in Limassol is being played in extreme weather conditions. Raków players cannot run due to high temperature combined with high humidity. You don't see players and referees being so fatigued already at the kick-off.

    4. I agree with your thinking Quilava

      Delete
    5. This was done on purpose... there is no way that Torreira wanted to play the ball. He has a foot movement towards the opponent when the ball is already going.

The first role of the referee on the field is to protect the health of the players and protect the game.

      RC

      Delete
    6. Excellent red card decision, imo. No chance to play the ball, player is 'flying' over the ground to catch his opponent, contact - at least partially - over the ankle.

      Delete
    7. Although UEFA don't care at all about the players' safety, this is the kind of decision I want to praise - launched challenge with the studs, zero intention/chance to play the ball - brave and spot-on call by Marco Guida.

      Delete
    8. I can follow Quilava’s doubts on UEFA’s opinion here.

This incident is almost similar to the cynical ‘step on achilles’ with no chance to play the ball in the Liverpool-Atletico game (2021), where a RC was issued, but it was deemed reckless in UEFA RAP, not SFP

      Delete
    9. UEFA should support the red card I think. Contrary to Liverpool vs. Atlético, which was a(n SFP) 'tactical foul' stop a counter-attack, this incident shows a deliberate attempt to hurt an opponent long after the ball was played. My reaction is the same as Euro Soccer Ref's - excellent decision by Guida.

    1. There were two OFR's by Kwiatkowski in his game - maybe ESR can find some clips :)
      - Corner goal by Sturm Graz was disallowed (player standing in offside position next to the goalkeeper obstructing the view). Maybe AR2 could have seen this, but these situations are always difficult
      - OFR for blatant handball. This time no discussion about whether it was punishable or not. However it was impossible for Jovanovic to see the handling from this position, but AR1 should've seen this imho.

Overall not a challenging game due to the standings. He applied a lenient approach, letting the game flow and just stepping in when necessary. Just 15 fouls! The leniency was (of course) much appreciated by the Dutch side, but Sturm Graz also didn't complain. Jovanovic was fully respected and the game never became too rough.

      Delete
  24. What a challenging game for Oliver, this was something even bigger than a CL final, if you ask me. Huge pressure on the English officials, with three crucial decisions coming to a point in which all of them would have decided the tie... all of the three going against home-team. This was hard to manage.

    90'+3 Penalty appeal Marseille
    https://streamable.com/bnn39l
I think you can give it, but no VAR stuff, fully agree with decision to support referee. There is a charging but no objective criteria to say it was a clear and obvious penalty. At referee's discretion (if he saw properly the incident...).

90'+5 Penalty for handball after OFR
    https://streamable.com/26bsvy
Oliver was looking in that direction but missed the touch, I would say not easy to spot, but maybe not impossible? Correct decision after OFR.

110' Disallowed goal for offside after VAR intervention
    https://streamable.com/16fo7v
In my opinion in this moment of the game, Oliver was really mentally-loaded , you can read that on his face... luckily this clearly punishable offside (player trying to get ball impeding defender) saved the English crew from something that would have caused controversy in all cases, the off-the-ball incident in the middle of penalty area.
As it was for first leg, some players used incidents to get referee's decisions in favor, but I think all was correct or at least supportable, thank to VAR. You can just discuss about the possiblity to whistle the penalty to Marseille in 90'+3. But surely a game that Oliver will never forget... you can talk about EURO, World Cup, but these are the moments that can make you a very strong referee.

    3. I'm not sure I understand the argument that the clear punishable offside "saved the crew from... the off-the-ball incident in the middle of the penalty area."

That incident occurs BEFORE the offside. So if it is a penalty, then... it's still a penalty. I think that's the inherent controversy here. The critical question is whether or not the foul occurred inside or outside the penalty area.

If you think it's an offensive APP foul, sure. You're right. But it doesn't look like an APP foul to me.

  27. We have started early with official complaints (but this time not from an Italian side): it is reported that Marseille wrote to UEFA following the officiating at both legs. To answer to a comment above, it is surely a very unpleasant concidence that all crucial calls in both games went against the French team, but honestly one can't question what has happened, it must be accepted.

    1. Again, unnecessary comment in brackets. You are losing any credibility

      Delete
    2. As Chefren is Italian, I believe this comment between the brackets was meant more cynical. It is a fact that mainly complaints on UEFA referees come from the Italian corner. To me this does not affect Chefren's credibility as he is always objective and supports his points of view on situations with good argumentation.

      Delete
    3. There would be more credibility in the complaint had the winning team voiced any concerns. The first thing to observe if a team is complaining is “did they lose” it’s normally a deflection tactic to cover their own inept performances.

    3. That video is of such poor quality that there is no way to say with 100% certainty whether Vida is in or out of the penalty area.
One thing to keep in mind is that the line is considered part of the penalty area. So, if we want to get really picky. If he's stepping on the line, he's invaded the penalty area early.
But without better quality video, I can't tell.

    4. According to the broadcast by Croatian channel MaxSport 1, in the exact moment of the shot, Vida had his foot above the line (even slightly inside), with his knee and upper body further inside according to his movement, but without touching the ground. (Sorry, I can't post the video here, I'm only using a rewinding option from my provider to review the footage.)

The question is: is this considered to be encroachment? IIRC, a player's position at a restart (whatever it is) is defined as the position of his/her feet. Now, judging by that, Vida's right foot was definitely closer than 9.15 m from the penalty mark. What's more, as Arbiter correctly states, the line is considered part of the penalty area and, if we imagine Vida to be an attacker getting fouled in such a position, it would have been a penalty according to his position. However, I'm still not certain if his foot needed to touch the ground in order for this to be deemed encroachment. Any and all opinions and/or more detailed info would be highly appreciated.

    5. OK, now I've just found something useful:

Sorry, I forgot to check the Glossary. Therefore, the conclusion should be: no encroachment, correct decision by the referee team.

IMO this time Attwell gave excellent performances and gain the trust again from the refcom, clear penalty missed by Eskas (I think his position could be better, he was too deep), and then the encroachment, IMO the goal correctly given because no encroachment by Vida (you can watch the highlight in 0.5 speed).

    1. Agree with you about the penalty: Eskås seemed to have his view obstructed by the two players in the middle of the penalty area, his position should have definitely been better. A clear penalty missed and, unfortunately, a mistaken identity situation earlier in the game (quite strange and unexpected given the position of the involved players, if I may say) don't point to a positive performance, regretfully. I have a certain feeling he was a bit overwhelmed by the whole spectacle, as well as the tragic and sorrowful occurrences surrounding this game.
