  1. Perspective and wise appointment by committee: a young elite is rewarded for what he has achieved so far. Since it is too early for him to talk about "major" finals, then this is perfect occasion. It is true that the French had a period of bad shape and some games were definitely poor, but in an overall analysis of his path inside UEFA, I think you can say this choice by committee has a reason. Still, Super Cup is seen in a different way than other competitions.
This also can suggest us that a name like Soares Dias is maybe kept for Europa League final, and he could get it in case of good season.
Finally, a remark about the nationality of referee: second French appointment for Super Cup in recent years after the famous Frappart assignment in 2019.

  2. As a swiss I hoped for Schärer, but Letexier definitely deserves that match. Soares Dias is as Chefren mentioned probably to for in his progress and is trusted enough for a "real" final.

  5. Congratulations to Letexier and his team, they've got a bright future ahead of them. I liked Letexier's performances in UEFA competitions last season, unfortunately not a very good U20 WC though. Hopefully he can continue his UEFA form into this season

  6. Altough Scharer was my first choice since June when people were asking for predictions, Letexier is an excellent choice for the SuperCup. The French was nr.2 on my list.

And somebody has to say it: I don't think it is only my opinion, but Artur Dias performance in the UCL semifinal was under expectations. True, the bar was set pretty high because of the very good performances in UCL SFs in 2022 (Kovacs, Orsato, Marciniak, Makkelie) and in 2023 (Manzano,Turpin,Marciniak); and these are fresh in mind, we can go back in 2021 with Kuipers and Brych with also very good performances but already it was without spectators at those times.
My point is, if it is to choose the worse refereeing performance in UCL semifinal, since Covid let's say, it is definiteley Artur Dias. So, in conclusion, I find it absolutely normal to reward another referee with the SuperCup.
Sure, in case of good performances, the Portuguese is definitely a name to consider for UEL final next seasons.

    1. Very good refereeing by Luís Godinho and his team. He only whistled 3 fouls in the first half and in total he whistled 14. He let play and didn't need to show any card. He was respected and his image was very positive. He did a very good job.

Just a curiosity, the television broadcast in the presentation of the refereeing team changed Luís Godinho name to Szymon Marciniak :)

    2. Maybe Marciniak was about to get this game but, from unknown reasons, withdrew? (some days ago I reported one of the journalists said about Marciniak going to Saudi Arabia in next days)

For me, a little surprise. Honestly, I regret that Soares Dias didn't get european final.

  10. With this scenario, I agree if he has good season “automatically” he will get “real” final. UCL maybe only contested by Taylor, Makkelie, and Vincic. UEL his main contender is only Kovacs, the others maybe Zwayer. UECL difficult to predict because too open, but maybe name like Nyberg, Peljto, Kruzliak, Meler could become the contender.

    2. I bet Stephanie Frappart won’t attend Euro 2024, you can watch her very poor performance in WWC, I think now we have quite enough option female referees, as you can watch their performance in WWC, Olofsson, Staubli, Foster, Welch, even Martincic and Caputi if we fair, have much better performance than Frappart. Simply by political, Frappart againts Caputi from Italy and Welch/Foster from England FA, the situation already change and Frappart era has over.

    3. Too naive to not say that FIFA/UEFA too much overused Frappart to be their puppet, she is still 39 but already had all achievement that she could get and now it’s time to throw her away

    6. Really sorry if the comment was not deleted immediately... that's why very often anonymouys are disallowed, you can see how much stupid are some people, but that's something we know.
It is quite sure that Frappart wont attend EURO if you ask me, her path inside Men's officiating has reached the maximum, I think she should have developed more with important assignments before thinking to big tournaments, but committee didn't do that. Enough what she achieved, according to her qualities.

    1. My idea: some of the young(er) development referees under the eyes of Undiano Mallenco, Rizzoli, Trefoloni, Vassaras and Kapitanis.

Very experienced elites under the eyes of Filipovic, Riley, Layec, Vega and Fröhlich.

      Interesting treatment of Rangers-PSV and
Braga-Panathinaikos. I predict some of the top names in those games which is sensible. One game could be very tight, the other very hot.

      Delete
    2. Correction: probably an experienced referee in Israel as well (Undiano Mallenco)

      Delete
    3. Normally, the games are more or less done by the current top 12, so there probably won't be much space for "younger development referees".
Letexier, Meler and Schärer seem possible, but I don't think, they will go "below" that, e.g. by appointing someone without KO stage experience.

      Delete
    4. Like last season, it could be the less experienced referees in the 1st leg.
The observer names indicate that as well. I agree with your 3 names in that category.

    1. From what I have observed in qualifying rounds this season, there won't be time added for goals in UEFA. And taking that into account, the rest took exactly three minutes, so good lost time compensation.

      Delete
    2. Okay, many thanks for that information. Although interesting given I thought IFAB was pushing for that globally (or at least in England, the pgmol have sold the improving behaviour standards as an English thing, but the added time as a global thing they have to do)

  22. One good thing before with YC for SPA, and then the terrible decision to forgive Spanish player... I'm sad to watch always same things...

  23. May be Letexier doesn't want to give cards because of the status of this match? Its more a friendly than a real trophy of course...

    1. It's a YC even in a friendly. Allowing such unfair, cynical offences you tell them 'do what you want'. Of course, it's just one decision and we shouldn't draw conclusions from that, but I expected to see such calls in AFC and CONCACAF but never in UEFA...

    2. It should be a YC anywhere and anytime, Euro Soccer Ref is spot on in his explanation. Let's just hope we don't see such a miss anymore.

  28. 93' Number 5 for Sevilla kicking the ball away very clearly. I've noticed at least five times where that has happened to some degree which would have been punished in England. That's the only instance which I think it would be punished everywhere... expect Uefa/Fifa I imagine

    ReplyDelete
  29. Acampos smashes the ball away in frustation. Ref - dont worry about it

    ReplyDelete
  30. Suboptimal lost time compensation in the second half. There should've been five instead of four added minutes. 90+1:20 substitutions took exactly one minute and the final whistle came in 90+4:30...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Bono was a little lucky to not be cautioned during that shootout. Especially 1 and a bit on 5, he was clearly delaying the kick by not retreating to his line quickly. More generally, despite my moans, the odd issue but a decent enough night for Letexier. Second half added time management and the missed YC just after 40' about it

    ReplyDelete
  32. I tend to think that this blog is slowly becoming a tribunal for referees. Tonight we have a huge number of negative comments about the missed YC ("joke of a decision", I mean, wtf ?), and very, very few comments about the correct decision.
For example, first YC for SPA is a top class decision, I truly believe that most refs wouldn’t have called the foul in order to avoid the disciplinary sanction, which was not that obvious to get right. 1 single comment about the second YC, and not a single one about the last one, which is also a spot on decision (live I thought it wasn’t a foul).

So yes, he missed one YC, maybe there could have been a little more additional time, but guys let’s remain objective, it was a really solid performance by a young and really promising Elite referee. Why not congratulate instead of constantly criticizing ? It looks like some people watch games only to see referees fail. With young referees, I find that even more disgusting…

Well done to team Letexier !

    1. OK, he didn't make any 'crucial' mistake but, let's be honest, besides the SPAvsDOGSO incident (good call that should be praised, indeed!) the game was not challenging at all. I think the negativity, including mine, was about the current, widely accepted trends were not respected by the referee. No reaction to blatant dissent by action at the end, lost time compensation and that unbelievably not given YC were quite big lacks for such an easy game. Unless UEFA is going to surprise us with what will be allowed/tolerated this season.

    2. I stand by Euro Soccer Ref's words regarding mistakes tonight: everything mentioned is correct and just objective facts, nothing more than that. I can speak only for myself, but still want to emphasise that I've never "watched games only to see referees fail", especially not Letexier, whom I rate very highly and have high expectations of.

Having said that, I still think he had a good game overall, despite some areas for improvement. Missed YC at 43' stays as the biggest mistake for me and, IMO, shouldn't happen because it sends a very wrong message to the players in general. However, I can absolutely agree with you regarding good aspects of tonights performance, the first YC for SPA probably being the best among them. As I said, that's why it was a good performance for me in the end, and I believe it's a pretty fair and honest assessment. At least I hope so.

  34. I think at the moment France have the brightest future of refereeing in Big 7, they still have Bastien, Turpin in few years and they got very talented referee in Letexier and Delajod. Other than France I think it’s Germany, if UEFA not drstroyed another German (Siebert), Jablonski could be very trusted elite referee in the future. Italy, Spain, England it seems in trouble in coming years (clearly Italy and England now have big trouble than Spain) and many finals in this decade IMO the referee will come from third world countries or not Big 7, except if they intervene with political power.

    1. I agree, France has a bright future in refereeing. The only "problem" could be that this country produce the same "type" of referees, being most suitable for the same kind of games; or at least this is my feeling. I remember watching Delajod last season in a some games, sometimes I thought it was young Turpin a couple of years ago on the pitch. And Letexier style is also similar. It would be an interesting thing to discuss.

      Delete
    2. Yes I agree with your analysis, France seems like have same type of referees, but for now it’s much better to have same type than like we have seen in England or huge generation gap in Italy and Spain.

    3. Siebert had a terrible post EC 21/22 and a below average 22/23 domestic season, so it's wrong to blame anyone else than himself for his (lack of) development. Maybe he tries too hard applying the lenient UEFA style while being more comfortable with a strict approach.

Jablonski is a promising ref and popular among both players and media, but tbh also had some match luck recently with wrong SFP decisions that didn't go viral because the disadvantaged teams won (e.g. BVB-Leipzig and Hamburg Derby). The lenient UEFA style certainly suits him better than Siebert, but he desperately needs to increase his decision quality. Imo it's set in stone that Jablonski gets his first BVB-Bayern this season domestically and if he also does well in CL, he might even go the full Siebert path to EC as Cat1 Ref due to the lack of alternatives and Germany being the host.

After Jablonski, I currently don't see a single Elite prospect which manifests itself in Brand and Badstübner losing the recent UEFA nomination race to a, at best, mediocre Schröder.

    4. How about Schlager and Osmers, I think both more than good enough to reach elite level, IMO waste time for Germany to wait Stieler retire.

      Delete
    5. I sort of disagree with the optimism.
Letexier is a nice referee in games where he can be ‘backgroundminded’. Teams that almost referee themselves. Always saving cards, even in case of a terrible football image (blatant dissents or cynical behaviour off the ball). I recall the Napoli game in UCL groupstage ‘22 where he was almost apologizing to players if he had to issue a YC. Letexier is not standing above the parties as a referee.

Regarding Delajod, I don’t understand the enthousiasm either. He did a not challenging Youth League final, only because he is from a Top-5 country (which should be prohibited in my eyes, give the UYL final to a referee from a smaller nation, but ok). And at the Euro U-21, he whistled a controversial penalty for Portugal in injury time after which he was sent home. I didn’t like his body language when he whistled this penalty. No clue why he is pushed so much at the age of 30.

Btw, I think France has some very talented referees, however not a big fan of these two.

@Kaer: if Siebert had a bad domestic season, why would they give him the Cup final? (in which he did very well btw)

      Delete
    6. Siebert had a really good season and therefore he was deservedly rewarded with the Cup final.
Also the new German dokumentary showed a meeting with Peter Sippel und Lutz Fröhlich after the first round where they said that Siebert was one of the strongest Ref. This is also fair to say.

      Delete
    7. You guys like to make Siebert a victim....

      Delete
    8. @J
Cup final appointment in Germany is 99% politics (probably like in most federations). Of the current squad, 8 refs already had their finals and Brych even had two which is super rare. So it just was Sieberts turn as last missing Elite ref without a cup final.

I have to agree that Sieberts 6-8 weeks before the cup final were decent but we can't just ignore his 16-18 terrible months after EC.

I didn't watch his final performance but it doesn't surprise me he did well. We all know Siebert can be a great ref in a game between two football focused teams. That doesn't justify his appointment retrospectively.
