    5. @ Phillipp In one interview he stated something about mental issues after the dissapointing World Cup.

His fitness level, speed and agility weren’t great in 2023. I saw he struggled with quick overturns. There were rumors that Letexier replaced him in the UCL QF last season.

Let us all remember our dear friend Soham, who left us all five years ago. I’m sure he would have followed the Women’s World Cup with great enthusiasm and joy, discussing refereeing performances and appointments. Same goes with the qualifiers for the current European competitions.

Soham, the blog and it’s community still think about you. You’re not forgotten, my dear friend!

  6. OT:
Fernando Hernandez Gomez (FIFA - Mexico) makes his return to Liga MX after the "knee gate" scandal. He has been assigned to referee the Juarez vs Chivas match.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the incident. During a Liga MX match played April 1, 2023 between Club America and Club Leon. Hernandez Gomez intentionally and forcefully kneed a Club Leon player in the testicles as the player was mobbing him and arguing a call. The player went down, and the act was caught by the camera. A few days later, Gomez Hernandez was suspended indefinitely by the Liga MX Disciplinary Committee and the Mexican Referee Committee.
Since then, he has only refereed two matches. A club friendly between Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad on August 2nd and a CONCACAF Central American Cup group stage match on August 15th between Coban Imperial (GUA) vs Cartagines (CRC).

    1. A 4-month ban seems about right for what he did.
Hopefully he learned his lesson and keeps his limbs to himself. Or better yet, he realized that he doesn't have to take any dissent. Just start throwing cards. The players will soon enough get a clue.

What do you think about the RC for Mac Allister today? Isn't it a little bit harsh (especially for the PL)? Obviously not a mistake by the referee and should be supported, but the decision kinda deviates from the approach that we were used with. The contact was not full and was not from the front but from the side. Probably it was the speed that made the difference between YC and RC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, not a mistake but for PL standards better decision would have been yc.

      Delete
    2. Big discussion on Twitter, people don't understand how VAR work. One must give up... the decision must be supported not because it is a clear red but because red card is not a clear and obvious mistake. It is an extremely harsh decision, if you ask me, but not wrong. Of course totally out of context in Premier League, taking a look at many other clear red cards situations in which VAR never intervened, but that's how it works. Correct by VAR to support, would be excellent to have a strict approach with SFP all the time, but definitely impossible.

      Delete
    3. For real, people are arguing if the VAR should have intervened? Still they don't understand? It would have been funny if it wasn't sad... Obviously correct by VAR to support, I didn't even think bring this in discussion.

Veery clear DOGSO, correct intervention, the Albanian referee should have issued RC. Maybe the fact that it was 4' or 5' contributed in his mind to YC?

  12. Should be the first appointment in an international (male football) match for Franziska Wildfeuer as AVAR as well. She worked in quite many matches as AVAR in Second Division, only few matches in First Division. This will change most likely.
So, Germany has four female referees in VAR/AVAR role now:
    - Katrin Rafalski (specialised VAR from now on, before this season only in the AVAR role in First and Second Division)
    - Riem Hussein (working as AVAR in First and Second Division)
    - Vanessa Kaminski (working as specialised AVAR from now on in First and Second Division, before this season no specialisation)
    - Franziska Wildfeuer (working as AVAR as described above).

I think it is a good sign for Germany, continuing with specialisation in VAR/AVAR role and having female VARs/AVARs quite early. They can gain experience in international matches also and will be ahead in some (IMO not so far) time, when women‘s matches will have full female VAR teams too.

    1. Hopefully more women's leagues decide to introduce VAR as well so they can get onfield experience as well. USA:s NWSL is the only league as far as I'm aware to use it for all matches

  13. Second red for Dnipro player was a mistake, he played the ball didn't touch Trnava player. I certainly didn't see any touch

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is particular, Dnipro player made the tackle but it was rather opponent to come close to him and the contact is not sure according to what I could watch. This time no video because not useful with poor quality, let's wait for some higlights.

Also, a penalty a few minutes before looks correct decision, both players entering a challenge, but then defender (very naive) continuing his action against attacker.

      Delete
    2. For me, this tackle is still looks really dangerous, even if played the ball first, I would support this YC

      Delete
  14. Rather easy game for de Burgos in Scotland. Total control, very easy game to referee, he could stay in the shadow the whole game.
AR1 with a blatant offside mistake before the 4th Villa goal. It was not even a close call, but he could not hold the tempo with the attack, so he was like 2 metres behind and therefore totally misjudged the situation. VAR corrected of course.

    2. Maybe I was generous saying 2 metres :D Looking it back it seems like AR1 was still in the dressing room as it was not even the fastest attack ever. Can happen, but on this level it's really bad positioning.

  15. Juxhin Xhaja crucial incidents:

    DOGSO
    https://streamable.com/4bdcsq
Clear RC, at the moment of the foul two defenders are late and they can't be considered. The red card should have been directly issued by referee.

    Penalty
    https://streamable.com/tvbkoi
Correct decision, after both players entered the challenge in a similar way, there was a persistent action by defender.

    Second YC
    https://streamable.com/31bhv1
Most interesting situation, I think that you can't exclude a minimum contact, thank to second replay. Nevertheless I think referee perceived a more dangerous action by player. He hit ball before and one must also consider that opponent was coming close (the tackle originally wasn't targetet at opponent' direction). All in all, to me a card you can't deem as wrong (indeed there is this opinion above), but at the same time more difficult to justify than a clear reckless challenge. Must be only supported by observer, I think that from the pitch you can have perception of a direct tackle on the opponent...

    1. The 2YC is a wrong decision for me

      Delete
    2. I think UEFA has a clear opinion on this, a second YC should be cristal clear. This could be YC but never a second one with this small touch (possible) and playing before clearly the ball.

      Delete
    3. Wrong decision. Not a second yellow for either the first contact or the trailing leg. Both contacts are minimal.

      Delete
    4. Never a second yellow card for me as well. It looks like the Albanian referee forgot that the player was already cautioned.

      Delete
    5. Always DOGSO situations are very tricky when you miss the first picture. Than it's always to late and it will lead you to a mistake. Agree with Chefren, should be given directly by referee.

      PK good call. Stupid defender

2YC i see comments " comments never for me" and no one use any criteria :)
Brave and correct to punish the Dnipro player by Albanian. The way he went to the challenge with straight leg and use of studs its totally worth for a YC. And the contat yes it was not soo strong because of Dnipro player but because of Spartak Trnava player who saw the studs and the last moment pulls his leg

      Delete
    6. @17:11 - no criteria?

    7. @anonymous 18:39
Getting the ball first has minimal relevance as to whether a foul has occurred. There is no reference to making contact with the ball in the section relating to Fouls and Misconduct in the Laws of the Game, but it may be considered by the referee in deciding whether contact was careless, reckless or excessively forceful.

      Delete
    8. agree with anonymous 17:11.
You can't make such a challenge and say hey ref i played the ball.
@Chefren and others it is possible to have the video of simulation at the second half for Trnava player?

      Delete
    9. I didn't watch full game so I didn't know there was another crucial incident.
      Here the simulation: https://streamable.com/vio1n6
Player falling before the contact with opponent, but surely opponent made a movement, I think in case of contact without previous action by attacker, would have been penalty, but given the quickess of falling down, VAR had to support this decision. I think you can't indeed say it was clear and obvious mistake, but surely another particular case...

      Delete
    10. Can anybody explain me any consideration for simulation here? I really do not see them. 1. there is contact, the striker is not using a slight contact or initiating the contact.

For me considerations for this challenge are
1.intention is to block the path of the striker -> tripping, 2.chances to play the ball are there -> but the ball is not played,
      3. direction of the feet -> towards the opponent

      Delete
    11. Correct decisions for the first 2 situations (DOGSO and penalty kick).
The2nd YC: Intensity of contact-low (because the black player made a move to avoid the contact), intensity of challenge - high, point of contact - tows/foot, leg - stretched with studs-up. IMO, the 2nd YC is correct decision.
Simulation: there is potential step-on-foot foul, if not than no foul and no PK (as the VAR did not intervene I guess it was not obvious). The attacker obviously uses contact with the opponent to deceive the referee. IMO - correct decision, YC for simulation.

    1. Now a YC for Twe8 correctly overturned to a RC after Ofr. Studs on shin, good intervention.

  20. FC Nordsjælland- FK Partizan

PK for home team: That is simply never a PK. There is a minimal movement of the arm towards the ball just to exclude possibility for VAR to call for the OFR.

  22. In my opinion, missed red card by Balakin in Midtjylland - Legia. Legia-player intentionally swung arm/hand with very significant force to the face of Midtjylland-player. The player had to be substituted, probably with a broken nose. Mitigating factor that it was not the elbow, but VC in my opinion. Nothing to do with football. VAR did not intervene.

  23. Clear red card I am afraid missed by Ukrainian crew, Wszolek elbowed Danish opponent who had to be substituted after that. But only yellow... very strange decision

    1. I agree it should have been a red card but, having in mind the instruction to intervene only if you can show a clear image supporting your intervention, I somehow understand that Kopiyevsʹkyy had doubts and decided to not jump in.

In addition, missed YC to Josué (Legia) for reckless use of arm / charge in 38', avoidable YC shown to Josué for his reaction to being fouled in 43' and mandatory YC shown to Slisz (Legia) for reckless SPA tackle in 45+2'.

  24. Treimanis in the Hearts game is clueless. Foul detection horrible and clear missed pen right in front of him which needed Var

    2. Empty and unfounded insults. Unfortunately most of this blog commentators day by day are more and more attacking referees with out nothing - no analysis, no situation description, no clips - Nothing! Just writing bull shit and insults...

  26. I saw Treimanis in Edinburgh today. A mixed performance. Foul detection was pretty decent and relatively consistent. However he let too many minor niggles and unsporting behavior go and that resulted in the late flurry of cards.
Penalty for Hearts after OFR, clear clip of the heals, either Treimanis or AR2 should have seen it. Clear penalty to PAOK correctly given. Hearts goal disallowed for offside by VAR I'm 2nd half.
All in all, I just don't think he has the game management to step up to elite

    2. Do we have a Anonymous who is a little too engaged to Mr Treimanis? I didn’t see anything of the match, but the analysis of Ecosse seems rather nuanced to me, and giving opinions is what this blog is about right?
