  1. Refcom has a few favourite picks when it comes up to Balkan games and they are Marciniak, Makkelie and all Spanish referees in general, especially Sanchez Martinez. In the past years Bastien as well. Hopefully, Letexier will take over the baton. 👍🏼

On the other hand, Turpin is obviously Mr. big game. A very lenient referee with regard to disciplinary sanctions. He just books ultra clear offenses (probably not everyone’s cup of tea) and has to quality to ‘survive’ big games without generating too many headlines.

Side note, I recall Turpin sent off an English player in the game vs Hungary which was a wrong decision (very rare!). But apparently no problem for England to see Turpin assigned again. I think, this would be different if the decision involved the Italian squad :)

    1. England also lost that game 0-4 so to focus on the referee after that game would've been quite something

  2. Important observers for both Krogh and Xhaja. For the first, I don't think we can exclude a UCL debut already this season if he keeps up the good performances

  3. Xhaja and Krogh (both new Cat. 1) on a similar path, with important observers for their development. I still can't say too much about the Danish, not so many occasions to watch him, while Xhaja seems now in a good moment after the appointment he got in Conference League and the very good performance.
Big names as expected in Serbia and England, both games are big matches and also important for qualification.
Peljto to follow in Finland with a crucial game but out from the spotlights, very good moment for the Bosnian. It seems he will renounce to handle a very important game in his domestic league on Wednesday, to referee this one in Helsinki the day before.
Still, including also under 21 full Oxctober assignments, and apart from Ferrieri Caputi and the friendly of Frappart, we didn't see the women belonging to Men's Categories. They could have got some games, there were many opportunities for sure...

  4. No surprise it’s Marciniak in Serbia.

Seems Webb is now an important observer… Atkinson soon to follow?

  7. About Francois Letexier last performance in HUNSRB: In the last minutes everybody agreed that he decided to gave 1-1 yellow card for mobbing, what was for the Hungarian second YC. But noone had seen what happened before tha final whistle moments.

    Here is the video: https://m4sport.hu/video/2023/10/14/kalmar-zsolt-a-szerb-kapussal-balhezott-a-lefujas-utan-allitotta-ki-a-jatekvezeto_2/

In my opinion for the Serbian goalkeeper should have been sent off according this video.
IMO Letexier was extremly lenient, and he has himself to thank what happened in the last minutes. In the past matches i loved his style he was excellenet, but this kind of match was a little bit hard to him. Much more experienced referee should have been nominated for this kind of Balkan derby ( Marciniak, Orsato and so on). Before the match when the referreing team checked the pitch Letexier seemed extremely pompous. He proved this kind of mentality when the hungarian player attacked AR2, he showed a YC as a crazy, and Letexier from this moment rejected all of the foul committed against the attacker until end of the match.
I think it was only an OK performance with a lot of technical mistakes what i had seen in the stadium.

    1. Marciniak is busy in other Balkan clash.
Orsato was occupied in a very important game for UEFA's president ;)
Turpin already had Serbia (MD1), Gil Manzano whistled Hungary (MD2).
Makkelie didn't whistle Serbia after the incident with Portugal.

      Who else do we have?
Oliver or Taylor, although the latter isn't in great form either.
      Kovacs obviously can't referee Hungary.
      Any other options?

Frankly, these Balkan clashes are great games for Letexier's development. I didn't watch the game. But I think, in general, we can blame the Refcom's appointment strategy: they should assign younger referees to balkan clashes in MD1-3 and save the experienced referees for MD4-6. Take Gil Manzano as an example; he was appointed to Austria-Belgium, which is a very suitable (fair) game for a upper category 1 / lower Elite. Not the best management.

    2. One of those, that nobody on the field saw / asked for.

    3. @Philipp S: But that shouldn't be a reson to call / not call for an OFR

    4. Great decision, but not a big mistake by Peljto.

      Delete
    5. @Philipp S some latin team would saw that and put pressure on ref for sure. 😉

@Mikael W he can,but I don't think so,Irrati has some calmness and has proven himself as top VAR ref..
As for Bebek..alread, too much controversy in Croatia,I cant tell how he preformed so far for Peljto, but I can see that he is constantly in his VAR team so for sure he is doing something right.

  11. With this result, very high chances that 20th November we will have deciding match for Euro between Slovenia and Kazahstan...Big name will be needed there if that happens...

  12. Here the OFR:
    https://streamff.co/v/e_9zRDHKrO
Maybe players wouldn't have asked for a penalty, but here a VAR has an important clue for him, the raised arm should indeed give the doubt that a possible handball happened. For this reason, I think that this was something rather expected by Bebek and not difficult to spot. Clearly, everything is controlled, but I saw definitely more hidden penalties (of course we mostly talk about hanbdalls) than this one.
Having said that, indeed not easy for Peljto, maybe impossible due to the head of attacker that can obstruct his view.

    1. I'm maybe minority but for me this intervention is wrong. By the latest instructions, the ball needs to significantly change direction for handball to be given. This is only a slight touch.

  13. 2 correct yellow cards from Turpin early on

  14. Penalty in London, very long VAR check. Certainly doesn't look clearly wrong. Looks a clear penalty but he is close to a touch on the ball

    1. Very long check, finally penalty is rightly supported

    2. https://dubz.cc/c/bc7d9b
Attacker gives me the idea that he knows if he puts leg, he will get penalty (defender had already started the tackle and he was close to hit ball). A penalty that can't be denied but in my opinion a bit different from the classic trip.

    3. Yes not 100% clear put its a penalty

  15. OFR in Northern Ireland- Slovenia, goal was originally given but overturned on review, Slovenia player was in offside position and last touch off Northern Ireland defender not deemed to be a deliberate play.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hm, that would have been rather controllable and deliberate in my understanding.
BUT: I think, #9 was offside even before the last touch (by challenging his opponent), therefore the nature of the last touch was not relevant.

    2. Yes I missed the push from #9, silly me

  25. Correct PK by Xhaja in LTUHUN.

  26. Indifferent performance from Kovacs imo, 2YC correct but not the best foul detection elsewhere. Not his finest outing

    ReplyDelete
  27. And how will we and UEFA grade Turpin's performance?
    Good?
    Excellent?

I mean he did directly have his input in final score,if England were down to 10 men then result would have been different.
Crucial mistake to not issue RC to Philipps and Italy ahve every right to complain.

Also, I know VAR can't check YC's or 2nd YC's but whats the point of it if we're gonna ignore this type of tackles?
Only dangerous and legbraking fouls are VAR stuff???

    And this is not?
Stuff that could have influenced the game?

    Come on now...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree with @M. Slight change in VAR protocol is absolutely required, VAR has to check 2nd YC as we are talking about RC i.e. KMI.

  28. OT:

Watching 1st half of South American classic,Uruguay vs Brasil..

Don't know if this is CONMEBOL policy or just Herrera's(main ref for the match)but the level of player protection is so low that no wonder that Neymar got injured in 1st half.
Numerous fouls on him,Vinicius going unpunished is almost laughable.

He did issue 3 mandatory cards,I was even surprised that he did that.

With his criterium,I wont be surprised if we see some RC's also.

    1. Yeah, same happened in Ecuador vs Colombia, pushes and other small niggly fouls were not whistled at all and even clear hard fouls deserving yc were whistled I d say 1 out of 3. And then despite this in general very high bar for whistling a foul he gave a penalty in Colombia's favour for a small push! No wonder Ecuador players felt aggrieved

      Delete
    2. *Facundo Tello was referee in Ecuador vs Colombia

      Delete
    3. Even worse performance.

No criterium in 1st half,he just was trying to tie things up in terms of card management.

But in 2nd half, the goal was only to show mandatory cards.
Mobbing and protesting was allowed,I would say that everything was allowed.

      And player protection-non existent...

  29. Some crucial games in the final rounds. Slovenia’s position looks quite steady, but they can still miss out if they lose their two remaining games. Italy obviously needs two wins to qualify.

    Group E:
Poland – Czech Republic: this can go to either ORSATO or VINCIC.

    Group H:
    Denemarken – Slovenia: (1)
    Slovenia – Kazakhstan: (2)

    Group C:
    Italy – North Macedonia: (3)
Ukraine – Italy (in Leverkusen, Germany): (4)

TURPIN is available in Group H. My mind goes to (1).

MARCINIAK is available in Group C and H. Is it possible for him to officiate Ukraine given the tight (political) connections between Poland and Ukraine?

ZWAYER is available in group H and C.

Maybe an English name with Italy, although I don’t see TAYLOR there. The latter can referee Slovenia though. Is OLIVER possible with Italy? He can’t go into Group H.

Israel – Switzerland remains a crucial tie. Romania – Switzerland to a lesser extent, as both countries can still qualify. I don’t expect big names for Netherlands-Ireland, Latvia-Croatia, Croatia-Armenia and Group G.

    1. My early ideas for the mentioned games
      POL-CZE: Turpin
DEN-SVN: Sanchez (not that big, because winning on MD10 is enough for both)
      SVN-KAZ: Makkelie
ITA-MKD: Grinfeeld (not that big, because winning against UKR is enough for ITA)
      UKR-ITA: Zwayer
ISR-SUI: Siebert (might be the original appointment)
ROU-SUI: Collum (more likely, that it is not relevant anymore)
      NED-IRL: Massa
      LVA-CRO: Nyberg
      CRO-ARM: Marciniak

Groups D and E still have several teams fighting for qualification, therefore I would actually expect Elite referees in all games there.

      Delete
    2. @Philipp: I do not know whether UEFA will take this argument into consideration, but:

Poland is currently 3rd placed in group E with the chance to qualify indirectly via the play-offs whereas Croatia is currently 3rd in group D but definitely qualified for at least a play-off. If they remain 3rd, group D will have 3 teams either directly qualified or in the play-offs. Should Croatia qualify directly and Wales become 3rd, the latter could fight with Poland for a play-off spot.

If I had to make the assignments for the final stage, I would appoint as many "neutral" referees as possible for those games: German top referees as well as Elite referees from countries that are already qualified such as England, France, Portugal and Spain. Stieler and Zwayer from Germany had only one qualifying match so far but also Oliver and Taylor from England, Gil Manzano from Spain and Soares Dias from Portugal with two qualifying matches each are "unbiased" in this regard. Also Sweden's top referees would be available since their team is eliminated.

  30. Is your expectation that UEFA will save many bigger names for UCL MD4?

If eg. a controversial incident occurs in MD3, you need a big name for the return.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, the bigger name should get the away game of the bigger team.
E.g., Galatasaray-Bayern should get the bigger name than Bayern-Galatasaray.

BTW, looking at last year, it seems also possible, that referees work on both matchdays.

    1. Definitely not an easy game for Ukrainian referee, he had the "luck" to officiate San Marino in what we can describe its best day, or maybe Denmark in the worst day... he struggled for controlling game, a situation before Denmark goal was heavily criticized by San Marino...
