    1. Given that appointments for MD3 and 4 have been made together, Siebert should indeed be on MD4 as main referee, but you can clearly say that committee has no hurry in appointing him...

      Delete
    2. His last game was on 7 October, which means he didn’t referee last weekend as well. It could be a (light) injury or other issues. Wasn’t Siebert replaced by the 4O during a game during last season?

In general, when a referee is in a weaker period, we can always consider injury or personal issues (lack of confidence). It’s not always the decision by committee. Take Makkelie as example - he obviously had a weaker period after the World Cup. His shape/fitness wasn’t good, gained weight, reduced running on the pitch, never in a full sprints, looked isolated (no confidence at all), was probably replaced in QF by Letexier and whistled some games in 2nd league instead, on lower intensity. That was quite obvious. Fortunately, looking much better now. Not in 2020-2022 form yet, but definitely improving compared to before summer.

Body language and fitness can tell a lot. Maybe our German friends can tell us more about Siebert’s form in domestic league?

      Delete
    3. No Siebert last Game was in France, where he replaced Stieler.

      Delete
    4. Yes, of course. Hopefully Siebert on his way back. I think, the body language of a referee can tell us a lot about their form, both physically and mentally.

Siebert was pushed too much, definitely. The Atletico game needed a more experienced head, that’s for sure.
If Turpin was often ‘blamed’ for getting the easy games, football-focused, etc. Well, at least they gave him time to develop to a save pair of hands. Letexier also has a good development now, and a good appointment strategy (and strong diplomatic support) are obviously part of the success. He gets time to develop in Turpin’s shadow. A very different treatment compared to Siebert and Nyberg(!) if you ask me. Although the latter was good so far, I don’t like the strategy at all.

Perhaps, the French FA are (pro-)actively involved in the appointments their referees get as well…(?). Their referees are obviously not pushed in a way like eg. Siebert.

    5. Makkelie gained weight? Cmon no need to exaggerate things dude.

    6. So Anonymous we can not comment on referees fitness and figure / Does that not go together to make an excellent referee.
Or is because It’s Mr Makkelie .

  5. Welcome back to Hategan in UEFA Competitions, clearly the news of the day. Indeed we were talking about him just a few ago, it was expected to see him again. Now it will be interesting to see how long it will take to return at the top level of an Elite referee, but surely a secondary thing, most important fact is that he is back again and if we go back with memory at the terrible moment, well, that's a big success in his life. I think he is absolutely aware of that.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Some astonishing appointments, for my taste: I rather expected Harm Osmers to advance to the Champions League than to get a match between the 3rd placed team and the 4th placed team in the Conference League. Can we draw the conclusion that DFB/UEFA are not sure whether he or another compatriot (Sven Jablonski?) should be the next German to be promoted?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's was also my feeling Peter; I was expecting a more brilliant short term future for Osmer. Nethertheless Welcome back to Hategan !!!! as Chefren said a big success for his life. Probably he will not have time to reach top level before the selection of the team for Euro24 but he can be a reliable VAR during the competition

  7. Hungary has 2 Cat1 referee Bognar and Berke. Berke appointed in MD1 in ECL and thats all after that. No EQ matches for anyone. No european games for Hungarians. Absolutely unfair. Italy everywhere. Well done Roberto!

    1. Why mentioning exactly Italy in this regard?
There are many referees from many countries appointed, but you are sure that Italian referees are taking the place of Hungarians...

      Delete
    2. I mean exactly Pairetto’s appointment. But in previous round i can talk about Chiffi or Sozza. All of them Cat 2 referees…

      Delete
    3. I think some of readers wondering, because we all know who is Pairetto and Chefren and the others mentioned many times how “bad” is he and then why u can’t appoint referee younger and realistically can get more match than Pairetto? As simply as why must he?

      Delete
    4. For me it’s not about Italy, but why Pairetto must get another chance?

      Delete
    5. I agree about Pairetto, absolutely undeserved appointment based on his career, he is doing quite well at moment, but of course if you wait so long time, supporting always a referee, you can have this for all. I would have appointed another referee and not him, but what I want to say is that there are also referees from other countries, so it is not strctly Pairetto or an Italian referee to stop the Hungarian assignments...

About Pairetto, unknown whether he will leave the list or not, while for Fabbri it seems quite sure.

      Delete
    6. I think one really should stop anonymous comments: From my (Austrian) point of view, I could also argue that I missed Cat 1 referee Julian Weinberger on MD 1 and 2 whereas we saw Cat 2 referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca. We usually do not know the reasons for such (non-)assignments. Maybe the last performances were below average. But this one-sided bashing against Roberto Rosetti, his alleged favoritism towards Italian referees as well as his alleged discrimination against Turkish referees really annoys me. When I (as an Austrian) consider that Aliyar Aghayev made his Champions League debut last season I could also demand Harald Lechner to be treated equally. Or I could request Sebastian Gishamer to be appointed in the Champions League like Morten Krogh makes his debut there after just one Europa League appearance so far. And so on ...

      Delete
    7. There is obviously a lot favoritism within UEFA (no surprise), and mostly, with regard to Italians, Slovenia, Spain and French for my taste.
Italians had the most UCL games in MD1-2. In MD3, again two Italians and Orsato to follow in MD4. Personally, I’m not sold on Massa and Guida. They don’t get any top games, so Refcom does not consider these referees as top. But still they get their appointments. And even a weaker impression (Massa or Sanchez - play-off) doesn’t have any consequences. IMHO this would be different for referees from smaller nations?

French referees already got 3 assignments in UCL MD3. In our honest opinions, does it have any consequences for Turpin or Letexier if they have a weaker game (not in control), or make a bad decision? I don’t think so. IMO the treatment of eg. German, English and Dutch referees is very different from that regard. For example
The Netherlands, Björn Kuipers is part of the Refcom, but I am sure that a weaker game by a Dutch referee (no matter which one) will have consequences for the next appointment. In my opinion, merit is more in consideration for referees from these countries, compared to the Spanish, Italians and Vincic. But that’s my view. Feel free to disagree.

      Delete
    8. The big countries obviously gets treated differently, all the new FIFA referees get's the chance directly to referee in the main competitions while the others has to work for many years to get here. While it is obviously fair that it would be easier for them considering they have to work harder to actually get their badges, it's still a bit unfair that UEFA thinks they're instantly ready to referee the big games

    https://streamff.co/v/ABSLsItAG4
As it was already clear, after a very detailed analysis from all cameras, VAR couldn't find evidence of a punishable touch, he assessed that player touched the ball with the legal part of arm, close to shoulder. He couldn't add more than that. It seems committee agreed.

Also a very good RC for VC just after Lille's goal, Slovan #36 with a clear kick-out

  18. OFR Hategan. He gave penalty but good var, it was no penalty,

  33. Disgraceful scenes in pittodrie by
The officials, Aberdeen have every right to make an official complaint to uefa, I’m a neutral and I have nothing against Sebastian Gishamers var team but surely that penalty had to be given to Aberdeen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Potential penalty to Aberdeen : not a clear error and I would verge towards no penalty as the Aberdeen player looks to kick into the PAOK player.

Penalty to PAOK after OFR : Clear standing on foot, correct intervention

As much as I want Scottish teams to do well, the decisions tonight were fairly run of the mill decisions. Not hugely controversial.

  37. Apparently Aberdeen penalty not even checked by VAR, which could explain the lack of time spent, this combined with the non RC v Helsinki in last game, very poor crucial decisions missed in terms of home team. 1. From my point of view a clear kick by defender. Attacker just tries to reach the ball and does not try to win the penalty. I don’t see any argument to not award the penalty hence a missed mandatory intervention in my book.

      Delete
    2. Defender puts the leg ahead of attacker and doesn't hit him directly at first glance, then attacker continues his run and there is the impact, and the intensity is not clear.
Can be a penalty for tripping for sure if given by referee on the pitch, absolutely correct by VAR to stay silent because no evidence of a very clear foul and some people can disagree.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Chefren, supportable each way. Not for VAR. Some contact, but the defender is also in his right to place his leg where he does, in order to get the ball. Notice the way the attacker falls with arms above his head. He was also attempting to get a penalty. No clear evidence for a refutable foul, so I do not feel that Aberdeen was robbed here.

      Delete
    4. Haha unbelievable, it’s a penalty every day of the week. VAR is responsible for a very poor error here, you can’t get involved in one penalty and not the other

      Delete
    5. To answer anonymous 12:08, why can't VAR get involved in one and not the other considering they're completely different situations?

I think VAR made a mistake in the first one, to me it's a normal running motion from the Aberdeen attacker who runs into the path of the PAOK player's leg planted there just before and with no time to react for the attacker. Getting to another conclusion is just overanalyzing in my opinion

      Delete
    6. Clear penalty. The defender is not interested on playing the ball (clearly visible on the 1st replay) and wants to trip his opponent. No excuse to VAR for staying silent.

      Delete
    7. Given the amount of words to describe why it’s not a penalty and why it’s not an intervention. Does the defender play the ball.. no, does he impede the attacker yes. Double standards by cheferen when u can agree a penalty at Celtic

      Delete
    8. I think we should await the appointments for MD 5/6 which may indicate how UEFA evaluates the decisions. Someone wrote that Aberdeen suffered from a crucial mistake made by Daniel Stefanski who however was assigned again, even in the Europa League, after the incident in question.

  44. I would be furious if I was an Aberdeen fan, to not give such a blatant penalty for a kick on the Aberdeen player is unbelievable, a 10 second check for that but a 4 minute check on a less obvious penalty for PAOK, no doubt an official complaint from Aberdeen incoming

    1. Luckily you are not an Aberdeen fan.

    2. If you're an Aberdeen fan, I think you should be more worried about your team not being able to hold onto a 2 goal lead, regardless of refereeing decisions :)

    3. Ah yes so games cant be decided on blatant incompetence by the VAR that is as blatant a foul anywhere in the pitch. Yes, the team are also to blame but the VAR played a huge part in the result as that incorrect decision gives the opportunity to regain a 2 goal lead you can simply just say you will back the decision no matter how wrong it is

  45. OFR for Chrysovalándis Theoulí, YC to be changed in RC.

I think that not all VARs would have called after the YC originally given.
There are elements for RC, but maybe not all will agree: the fact that it wasn't a full contact is the main argument against decision, in my opinion.

Wolves vs Newcastle over the weekend, penalty given by Anthony Taylor, VAR support!

    Was that a right decision??
