  1. It's not an easy game like maybe it looks like but I expect a good performance from O. Hategan! Good luck!

    1. He is excellent in such 'minor' tight games with a lot of fouls (see Slavia - Rangers and Cypriot Cup final; however I think today both teams will play in a more fair manner than Austria and North Macedonia). Both teams will be fighting for a win that keep their dreams to advance from the group alive though.

  2. 14th minute (or so)... shot goes just wide of Poland's post, SVK player in offside position, line of sight.

They showed the replay a few times then when they cut to live, the ball was already in play, so not sure if they gave the offside or just called it a goal kick.

  3. Both cautions issued were correct (SPA offenses), before those a good verbal warning (2'). Busy start for Hategan.

  4. Nothing to reproach to O. Hategan at HT. Almost perfect arbitration!

    1. Besides one missed freekick (25'), that was indeed perfect! Excellently prepared impression from the Romanian ref for this game.

  5. More intense than I expected. Good warning at 2' after late challenge. SVK #9 should have been booked. He committed three fouls, two of them being cautionable offences: 1', SPA at 9' and reckless charge at 15'. He was only warned (in a very good style, warning clearly reached its target, the player didn't commit any other foul afterward) after the first one.

Two correct yellow cards for blatant SPA offences followed at 20' and 22'.

Delaying the restart at 23', borderline step on foot at 29' and borderline to SPA holding at 32' were skipped by Hategan with regard to disciplinary control.

Finally, no replay of two penalty incidents at 26' and 30' were shown. Honestly, the way of broadcasting this tournament is somewhat amateurish...

    1. * SVK #19 should have been booked

  6. 2nd yc. Looks correct

  7. Very harsh second yellow card. Not convinced by this decision.

  8. Clear 2nd yellow, great call.

  9. First sent-off of the tournament is correct. Very good decision by Hategan, it was a reckless stamp.

    1. I'm glad it happened. Let's see how Hategan will be protected by UEFA. For a while it seemed almost forbidden to have 2nd yellows on international level

  10. Yeees ! Finally an expulsion, a very interesting moment! Good decision. Very well managed by Hategan

  11. For me both YCs are really soft tbh

    1. Maybe they are both soft but they are both correct. The hood, however minor, definitely stopped / interfered with a promising attack, and UEFA have been very clear about studs to the top of the foot being considered reckless. I’m glad that Hategan did not overlook this second incident to avoid a (correct) sending-off.

  12. This is a textbook reckless stamp on foot. Correct decision by Hategan, who does very well today in my view.

  13. Both yellow cards are absolutely correct by book and I praise Hategan.
Having said that, however, I'm sure other referees wouldn't have issued at least one of them if not both.

    1. Yeah, as I mentioned in an other comment, let's see if UEFA supports it by the following matches for Hategan

    2. If he didnt give the first YC, SVK would have asked for balance after the YC for Hubocan. And the second YC...maybe some Referees would have used the room that didnt really exist. That 2nd YC is absolutely fine for me.

  14. Correct 2YC, stupid foul by an experienced player. A stamp on foot is simply a yellow card. A determined approach to the match, more rigorous foul selection than others in the tournament. But it works well in this match, let's hope UEFA have a more utilitarian view of refereeing than FIFA.

So far a very strong Hategan in a match which suits his strengths well. I praise the committee for appointing referees according to their suitability for matches instead of reputation of the teams, it was different in the past.

  15. not sure what to think about those two yellows tbh. Both are technically the correct decision however in sum it seems soft to be sent off for those two incidents. Again, both decisions are correct but it doesn't really follow the line set by other referees so far...

    1. I simply don't get that to be honest. You already said it: Two clearly correct YCs were issued and I think that they were both not avoidable - I would call them even mandatory. They also fitted to Hategan's approach.
The line the cards have to fit to, is Hategan's in that match, his foul detection was absolutely predictable.

    2. I totally agree with that and I believe it was an overall very good performance. All I'm saying is that I'm not sure we would have seen a red card if the ref would have been Kuipers, Makellie, Brych, Lahoz...

    3. The 2nd YC is mandatory, and it is only that matters, because the player knew he got one already. Good and expected decision.

    4. Kuipers Makkelie Brych and Lahoz will manage situations and matches by using cards only when really necessary. That’s why they are the best!

    5. But it was not only necessary but mandatory!

  16. Very, very, very good performance by O. Hategan today. Not afraid to take big decisions in a tense match. Both YC are correct in my opinion. I really liked him. I predict at least a QF for him at Euro.

  17. In the last 20 minutes IMO Hategan lost his line, did not react strong enough to many fouls, and ended the game too quickly, ignoring the changes during the extratime. So all in all for me just an acceptable performance after nearly perfect first hour.

  18. The 2nd yellow card is not acceptable for EURO level. Too soft and with big consequence. A 2nd YC has to be 100% clear and without any discussion. This decision isn’t in the spirit of the game and also management.

    1. It was 100% clear. Not only a late challenge (knee in the thigh) but also blatant reckless stamp. A referee would have made a mistake if he didn't give that second YC.

  20. First controversial (wrong) decision that has a clear impact on the score. His disciplinary line isn’t the same as all other referees we have seen so far. Also the way he shows the cards is too aggressive if you ask me.

  21. As Flip wrote: "This is a textbook reckless stamp on foot." People stating it was 'soft' or even 'wrong', what are you talking about?

Apart from this key match incident, the Romanian ignored delaying the restart at 49' and 62'. Adding to that the third such incident, I would call no strong reactions a point for improvement.

In the 77th minute, there was an interesting possible DOGSO holding, to be rewatched carefully.

In general it was a good performance, the way he issued the warning at 15' was outstanding. However, there were also two points for improvement: missed YC to SVK #19 and no reactions to delaying the restart. I'm almost sure they both were caused by UEFA's instructions to avoid cheap yellow cards, especially for unsporting behaviours like dissent or delaying the restart. This could've been observed at the tournament so far.

  22. Michał Listkiewicz commented on Polish TV that it's nothing to discuss about. He assessed three incidents involving Krychowiak:

2' first harsh foul, referee only warned him and rightly so, but it would've been a YC if the foul was committed in e.g. 22'

    22' - mandatory YC for SPA/holding

62' - mandatory YC for reckless stamp, Krychowiak didn't give the referee a choice, Hațegan had to send him off

He also praised Hațegan for calm and professional handling of this game and wish our team next matches to be handled like this one.

  23. I think many of you are too harsh. He did a great job today. As I wrote above the 2 yellow cards were correct. It was a tense match and he was not afraid to take big decisions. I praise Hategan and I think the Comitmee liked his performance aswell.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If Hategan didn’t give that second YC many of you would be talking about a weak referee who’s scared to make big decisions. That was a textbook and absolutely mandatory yellow card for a reckless stamp. You cannot go into challenges like that and expect to get away with no card there. Krychowiak knew it as well, you could tell by his reaction. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

  25. Game needed firm refereeing at very good job by Romanian team of officials.

RC: Interestingly, the first YC seemed blatant in real time (but replay shows a slight pull followed by dramatic, unnecessary fall from SVK player). Once whistled, must be a YC for SPA. Second seemed harsh in real time, but replay shows clear reckless stamp to foot and definite YC - especially as this has been consistent in the tournament.

The tactical preventing free kicks is not being dealt with well but … I feel sorry for referees as the only real way to prevent is a clear YC as it’s clear referees have been told to avoid ‘cheap’ YCs so they are all (consistently) letting it go. I would prefer a consistently firmer line.

Good, strong body language in general and clear communication. Would have liked him to give a final, public warning to the SVK player who was continually complaining at him (No19?) but in a clever, non-public way … he seemed to be trying to referee/influence at every turn.

    Overall, very good performance.

  26. Very very good or even excellent performance. Correct verbal warning (2nd minute) and both yellow cards to Krychowiak. Nothing to complain. Good luck to Hategan, I wish him next matches including one of last matches on July part of the tournament...
