  3. After todays appointments and the things that happened yesterday for me Kuipers is a sure bet for DEN-BEL. Other matches where he can get the first inset either do not need his experience, or have had Makkelie in their first game (Group A) or have NL in their group (C) and if they would need him for ENG SCO he wouldnt be 4th official there. Really surprised by Cerros appointment. However Cerro had a good season and definetely better form than Cakir so im glad the appointments are not the reverse. Would still have preferred Kuipers for FRA-GER though

  4. Nice! Btw, does anyone know what is the Fifth Official for? Where is he staying?

    1. Previosly the fifth official was called the reserve assistant referee. So he/she replaces assistant who is incabable of continuing.

    2. How many times I have read this question in recent days!
Fifth official is an assistant referee and his role is to replace an assistant referee in case of injury.

    3. And he is sitting behind the 4th official during the game. There was a shot yesterday, where he was writing something, so I assume he is taking notes on the game.

    4. Ok, thanks. Sorry if this question was asked before. I haven't seen it even if I read almost all the post from the blog.

  5. Big surprise for Del Cerro Grande!
Big match for Cüneyt Cakir, UEFA appointed him due to the fact that the game will be played with 100%.

    1. Well, if you call Hungary - Portugal a big match I disagree.
Cakir still without big trust by committee, the "good news" for him would have been Germany - France, but surely not Hungary - Portugal. The Spanish from Madrid is very liked by Rosetti and committee, I prefer Mateu Lahoz by far, however, I also think that this means he gets a top clash now, but then he will leave the scene to Mateu for KO stage. I find this reasonable, but I would like to see more convincing performances by del Cerro.
He was not so good in several occasions in recent times.

    2. Well, last EURO Portugal - Hungary was a spectacular 3-3.And last EURO 2016 Cakir was appointed in his first match Portugal - Iceland, also a game where many people said no top match.

    3. Again, stop judging games before the first whistle...

    4. to Chefren : Cakir for sure no top 5 anymore. Given his latest non assignments, I think this game was the best he could get, in front of a full stadion. I fear he will even leave the tournament after a second group game. Rosetti and for sure Ceferin are not supporting him anymore. That’s life.

  6. Wooow ! Congratulations to CdC for this appointment
Everybldy thought Kuipers. Kuipers for FRA-POR ?

  7. Kuipers, Soares Dias, Rapallini, Karasev, Grinfeeld, Kovacs, Oliver with no games, will all have games in the 2nd round? I guess Kuipers for POR GER is a must now.

    1. I think that if kuipers gets a match in group F it would be Portugal-France. I assume they give every ref a game before the second round of appointments, so in that case kuipers should be either in group B or D. But since he is 4th in D today my bet is on DEN-BEL for Kuipers. POR-GER is too far away for him. My bet for that match would be Orsato now

  8. On paper a less interesting game for Cakir. But in terms of pressure it will be a challenging game especially that Portugal has usually a slow start for tournaments and basically the only stadium in this euro cup where full house will be. Surely a very heated game can be expected with 60-70thousand spectators. So I think an experienced official is completely justified.

  9. Wow! Big game for del Cerro Grande, congrats! Cakir with an OK match.
Does anyone know why we have VAR appointments now out already but those for tomorrow's matches are still missing?

  10. I think, we have the first big surprise here, which I find very reasonable. After having seen some 'save' appointments with top referees in order to ensure a good start to the tournament, now a first unexpected appointment - I like that.
Surely, committee appreciated Del Cero Grande's performances in this season's UCL and UEL KO round (especially BVB-MCI, ROM-MUN).

Beside that, okayish match for Cakir, who still searches for his top form.

  11. Oliver, Grinfeeld & Soares Dias with no involvement at all would suggest they should be involved on Wednesday or Thursday at latest otherwise surely they will be running out of time to be involved in a second match.

  12. I like the appointment of Del Cerro Grande. He did well, could not get something due to Lahoz getting the final, and deserves this appointment.

  13. Higlights for the played game so far:

    TUR - ITA https://we.tl/t-yilzxiPgHG
    WAL - SUI https://we.tl/t-2LlBNIkw4h
    DEN - FIN https://we.tl/t-p9LAFymw4z
    BEL - RUS https://we.tl/t-gZobQKCeEv

  14. I like Del Cerro and believe he deserves this appointment! However UEFA is taking a huge risk here. One big mistake in this match would instantly wipe out the great ref start to this tournament. Also the committe is opening itself up for criticism in this case since people will argue that they should have sent a top 5 ref to this game.

Nevertheless I believe he will do a great job and we will talk about a great match instead of the ref after the game!

  15. It is indeed particular that VAR were not appointed for 14 June games but today we have Irrati revealed for Cakir before his game with Orsato.

  16. Just a quick reminder that the deadline for predictions for the MD2 appointments is TOMORROW at 09:59 AM CET. Make sure that you all fill in the form on time if you want to participate.

  17. Big appointment for Carlos del Cerro Grande! Good luck to him and his team !:)

Cakir with normal appointment in Budapest. Good game for him:)

  18. IMO Carlos didn't deserve this appointment with this season's performances, he is in not the best form, but there were not many options after previous appointments - only three: Kuipers, Çakır and him.

With all the respect, Carlos is not a top candidate for the final, so it's easy for UEFA to risk a little bit with such appointment. In case of bad performance, they will keep the big names in play for the important, decisive games in second and third matchday and also for the knock-out stage.

  19. Congratulations to Carlos del Cerro Grande. Like everyone else, I am very surprised. On paper, France-Germany is maybe even the best match of the whole group stage. I don't want to say something like "undeserved" appointment but indeed the appointment seems strange or, better "risky".
Rosetti appointed the top class Elite Referees for the first matches, which were – with all respect to the teams and nations – certainly not the biggest matches on paper. He did that in order to have a calm and save start into the EURO 2020. We praised that. So, in this logic it seems a bit risky or strange to see Del Cerro Grande in the biggest match with the biggest media pressure as Germany and France are one of the biggest countries in Europe with a lot of spectators. If Del Cerro Grande shows a pleasant performance, for which I keep my fingers crossed, everything is fine. If there are any controversies, the obvious question is: "Why did UEFA select a referee who is indeed top class, but does not belong to the big, big names for such an important game?"
I think everyone expected those big, big names like Kuipers, Orsato or Mateu Lahoz.

  20. It’s remarkable to read that Makkelie's performance and decision - not to give a penalty for the defending handball - is heavily appreciated and encouraged throughout Europe, with the exception of some Italian media. Makkelie has made clear the new interpretation of the handball rule in opening Euro 2020 game. Fans in domestic leagues have become used to seeing such handball rewarded with penalties in the area of review by video assistant referees. In a pre-tournament briefing, UEFA director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti explained that this rule is enforced too strictly and that players' physiology is not taken into account. The way the law is rewritten is more according to the spirit of football and to give the players the freedom to play football. The choice of Makkelie, who’s from the Netherlands, seemed to be no accident for the marquee opening game. He is considered one of uefa's most reliable referees. According to analysts, Makkelie has taken a good step towards a next appointment, while Roberto Rosetti is widely praised for fast-tracking the clarification change in football’s handball law, that otherwise takes effect on July 1.

    1. Markus, hout view on Makkelie is vader on the 1 game. Have you forgotten his big game in de Championship League where even the English press and fans would have a ref like that what the don't have them self in Engeland of are you impressies without a League that doende the most but don't have a elite referee In would dat try to hier international referees. Referees have observers the fullseason and there level is not on 1 game but the level of a film dessin. Remember Collina had bad games to and his Carrera is vader on the overall high level he had and if you look referees at a weekly base and the less you see there overall season because the last game of a referee is more on your mind mnd forget other games because you didn't see them because the team you love is a game your likely see more them games where your team is involved. A referee and Collina, Rosetti of who ever, the know that a good season is a season with the less bad games. We are all human and we have bad date too and its about leerling that number as low. And even the VAR isn't allways right and from Makkelie we can dat that he was the best at the last worldcup and he is just 35 and this is his first tournament where the first game is allways used as being the game where you show what the got instructed by the referee leaders and those same instructions are given to the referee observers. And about this years roster of referees a would have many questions. You see too much referees that are not close to the elite level. I'm not a fan of that French woman and her smile, but see is better then a number of those who will be appointed and she is better then Turpin. Its date a lot that there 2 referees from Romenian and does anybody know something of that League and there referees in a complete season so you know its lows and highs.

  21. OT: 36 group stage matches and 19 referees listed. How does the division work at EURO? Will everyone officiate two group matches and one referee will do 1 match only, or is it thinkable that referees can do three matches while others are doing one or none?

    Help me out please.

    1. Well, we can't know for sure, but we can speculate.
The most likely scenario is that 17 referees get 2 GS matches and 2 referees get 1 GS match.
The two referees with one match could then either be out or get a R16 match. I assume, the first option is more likely, i.e. the two weakest referees will remain with one game.
Some referees getting 3 GS matches is not completely impossible, there is enough time between games to make that work.
A referee not getting a game at all should only happen in case of unavailability, e.g. due to health problems.

    3. Well the ref from Israël will likely have 1 game like the 2nd Romenian referee. And the 3rd games in the groups where something isn't desided will be likely for the elite group referees or will take somebody who has hardly CL experience.

  22. Interesting to see de ALMEIDA (SUI), Portuguese-Swiss, as the 5th referee in a game with Portugal.
