  1. POR-FRA : Woow ? Not Kuipers... Decidedly, UEFA has the art of surprising us. PORFRA: a match that requires a great referee

    1. Lahoz. Great choice.

    2. I agree and reassured! I was expecting a new surprise from UEFA ! 3 matchs for Lahoz !

  2. Ekberg and Kovacs with only 1 game.

    2. Indeed. Sorry and thanks for your correction

  3. Somehow expected to give Kuipers a group E match considering it is very Lively that 3rd group F will play NL

  4. De Bleeckere and Rizzoli to observe Kuipers and Lahoz: Two big matches, two big referees, two candidates for the sesame (the final!)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I am not surprised Ekberg, Kovacs and Grinfeeld were left out. The question for me was: Makkelie or Mateu Lahoz for a third match? Mateu Lahoz will hopefully/probably make an excellent game.

  6. Like i thought Lahoz team got the lottery ticket. If he has no problem in this game i think he is the biggest candidate for the final.

    2. You were right about the lottery and a name between Mateu and Makkelie, hugostiglitz. Very good analysis.

  7. Expectedly, Ekberg and Grinfeld who were the worst performers with only one game (I'm glad Rosetti saw their performances like me although many people were stating they were still satisfactory :D).

Therefore, UEFA was forced to appoint one referee for the third time and it's Antonio Mateu.

All games are very important for the final standings. Very good to see Rosetti applying performance principle!

  8. So we can draw some very important conclusions.
    1) Committee was not pleased with Grinfeeld performance in NED - AUT, no second game for him and that's a disappointment for the Israeli. I think committee would have liked him to see the penalty live.
    2) Mateu Lahoz is the name with three games, the only one referee in group stage. I think that committee managed to avoid that, but they were forced. I'm interested in asking, who would have officiated this game in normal conditions? No referees planned before? Maybe the draw by Spain against Poland caused a switch of Kuipers in that game?
    3) Kuipers, Brych but also Makkelie are kept for something big in KO stage, they didn't officiate real top clashes so far. One should have said the same for Orsato, but after his second performance I'm not convinced.
    4) The question Karasev - Kassai is not considered by committee, differently from what reported here yesterday.
    5) Makkelie was in my opinion candidate for POR - FRA as well, but he couldn't handle this game due to Serbia - Portugal, otherwise, having officiated his two games earlier than Mateu, he would have been maybe in pole position for a thid assignment.

    1. If Belgium plays against Portugal(Group F 3rd) in KO, so Makkelie is out of picture. Who will have that big game?

      Delete
    2. I think it is England that get 3rd in Group F not Belgium if England top Group that is

      Delete
    3. In the schedule either C1 or B1 is playing against F3. But i really don't know how they put 3rd teams.

      Delete
    4. There’s a quite complicated mathematical construction determining the coupling of the best 3rd placed teams. So at this point, without even knowing which best nrs. 3 continue, it’s impossible to say something about that.

      Delete
    5. Addition to my earlier comment (Anonymous 13:55):
Third placed team of group F can only play the winner of groups B or C.

  9. How important is it whether a referee in a later stage has already done a match of a certain country?

  10. Do you think Grinfeeld without his second match is due to his performance? I dont remember he was that bad?

    1. My comment after his game:

A very poor performance regarding foul detection. Even if one can understand the missed foul resulting in penalty after OFR, it should've been seen at real time. The amount of missed (minor but still) incidents in 18', 37', 43', 47' and 59' is shocking at this level. Furthermore, no action against unsporting character of fouls in 31', 39' and 47'. No action against blatant delaying the restart in 56' is something we got used to at this tournament... He wasn't able to communicate with players in a decent manner, very authoritarian. I think we won't see Orel again at this EURO. :/

  11. Taylor FO to Oliver for SWE v POL
Although I wouldn’t expect anything other than professionalism from all concerned, does anyone know Michael or Anthony and if so, how are they as people? Are they ‘friends’ or is there any bitterness in the ‘refereeing rivalry’ between them both?
Wasn’t there talk of Clattenburg and Atkinson being bitter towards each other in their day?

Just curious. Wish the team well for game on Wednesday

    1. They have worked as referee and var in premier league before so should be no problems :)

      Delete
    2. In the Premier league they are always always avoided, like they are hardly appointed for the same game in different roles but Taylor during an interview said he was praying that he and Oliver get selected for the Euros and they have great personalities so I guess they are friends

  12. I think that Ekberg, Grinfeeld and Kovacs will be on their way to home after group stage. Del Cerro Grande's chances for KO match are not so big.
Cakir, Brych, Kuipers, Makkelie, Lahoz, Turpin, Vincic, Taylor and Orsato will surely be there till the end (4QFs, 2SFs and F to be refereed by them)
Other referees left have possibility for KO match, but nothing more than R16 in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hope Karasev performs better than Germany - North Macedonia :P

  14. Oliver definitely merited another match after a brilliant showing in HUN vs FRA. At this point I think by the committee handing Lahoz a third group stage game, it means he is likely being prepared for the finals because this 3rd game means he might have just one KO game before the final. Also I am considering the history of refeees who officiated the UCL finals being selected to officiate an international tournament final the same year. Example

Howard Webb UCL final/World cup final 2010

Pedro Proenca UCL final and UEFA Euro final 2012

Nicola Rizzoli UCL final 2013 and World cup final 2014

Mark Clattenburg UCL final and UEFA Euro Final 2016

Milorad Mazic who officiated the UCL 2018 final only missed out on World cup 2018 final because of Croatia's participation

Mateu Lahoz 2021 UCL final. So I am predicting that he gets the final if Spain don't get to the final.

I know people may say Kuipers. But remember he has had an international final before (2013 Confederations cup) I UCL final and 2 UEL finals. Also on basis of current form, Lahoz is ahead.
    Hence my prediction.

    What do you think guys?

    1. Brych, Lahoz, Kuipers… Probably one of them will get the final, of course it depends on his next performances and also which teams will handle the final. I also can imagine other referees (Hategan, Turpin, Makkelie…), hope only performances will decide and not political reasons.

      Delete
    2. Id say Kuipers or Brych depending on who is in the final. With Mateu there if the final would be NL GER. With NL not reaching the final I dont see anyone else then Kuipers. Not based on current form perse, but based on the fact that his team as a whole overall was the best the last decade IMO

      Delete
    3. Currrent form should be more important than "merits" from last decade.

      Delete
    4. I agree. Unfortunately UEFA and FIFA time after time have shown that being the best doesnt mean getting the best :)

      Delete
    5. I wouldn't say Brych because he will be in the World cup next year where he will be an overwhelming favorite for the final if Germany don't get to the final.

      Delete
  15. Pretty good appointments.

But if I may digress a little, can someone tell me the difference between the YC issued to Moder for his stamp on Moreno for Spain's penalty AND the RC issued to Ampadu for his stamp on Bernadeschi?

Because I still do NOT understand that RC, to be honest.
In this competition so far, we have seen ALL stamping being punished with a YC, and Ampadu's RC for me is still unacceptable.

Not too surprising though, because Hategan's decision-making yesterday were generally suspect and inconsistent.

He will be VERY VERY lucky to referee one more game in this Euros.

    1. In Spain game it was step on foot, in Italy game it was more than step on foot. IMO it was close to borderline, i would also prefer YC there but it's not a mistake at all. RC is also acceptable there i think.

    2. I think EVERYONE--like literally almost everyone--is too focused solely on the point of contact and ignoring all the other considerations.

      The mode of challenge.
      The intensity of the challenge.
      The speed of the challenge.
      The force of the challenge.
The location of the ball at the time the challenge was made.

We are not narrowly focused robots who respond to one particular component in a binary fashion. For determining misconduct, there are a number of factors to consider.

On Hategan's red card yesterday, I'm not in the camp of "this absolutely has to be a red card." But I am in the camp that says this is clearly the worst challenge of the tournament so it's not inconsistent to give the red card here.

The ball was long gone, there was a significant amount of force with a very high rate of speed and the tackler came in with a straight leg exposing the boot and connecting at least partially on the shin.

It's like almost everyone is just focused on that last part, ignoring all the other components that made this challenge so dangerous.

      Delete
    3. Exactly, it is also with a higher intensity. I think you're right to disscus so much about the RC, but regardind the rules it isn't a mistake!

      Delete
  16. Kovács, Ekberg and Grinfeld could not fully convince in their first appearance and therefore commitee was forced to appoint one referee in all 3 GS matchdays. I don't think that we should draw conclusions about the final based on that, as there are numerous candidates, who could be considered to referee this match - we do not even know the teams who participate in the KO round yet, so it's too early for that for me.
Otherwise, sensible appointments in this final round of group stage matches.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That’s a bit harsh on Kovacs, he hasn’t even had his first game. Committee could have avoided the current Lahore situation by actually giving him a chance (and in that case the best performing referee out of the 3 worst could have been given the already decided MKD-NED).

      Delete
    2. I think Chefren had a good point regarding that. Having 2 referees from such a small federation that could indicate his treatment. Especially that Hategan is clearly the number 1 from Romania.
Maybe not that fair treatment, but still great achievement to participate in the tournament.
So far we have two very positive surprise names in the hat. I could imagine Sieber or Rapallini also with one game but now I expect for Sieber even a 3rd game, and depending on second match performance I could imagine also Rapallini with a 3rd game in R16.
I am really curious about Orsato now. I would somehow praise Rosetti if he would have the courage to drop him after the group stage. Let's see.

      Delete
    3. IMO Kovacs got the appointment for EURO 2020 thanks to incident in Paris (PSG - Istanbul Basaksehir). If UEFA accepted the incident as a scandal because of referees, Hategan would have been out and Kovacs would be the main guy from Romania. UEFA did not blame the referee (as it should be) so Kovacs got out of the Rosetti's picture.

      Delete
    4. Regarding Orsato, I am quite sure that Rosetti will appoint him for a low-profile KO stage game. Orsato actually performed well in ENG-SCO and had a bad night in Spain but nobody talked about the referee. Moreover, he is not a 'young' one like Grinfeld or Kovacs but he is an experienced referee with a CL final and excellent performances in the last UEFA season, so I think he deserves a second chance. However, I believe he will reach top games only if he shows an oustanding performance in the next match. The main issue with Orsato is fitness, he clearly looks injured.

      Delete
    5. For the final, it will be Kuipers or Brych but for the rest of the games, I think Rosetti will appoint based on meritocracy, as we saw in the last appointments. Grinfeld performed badly means no more games. Oliver (expected to get only 1 game) performed very well and had a second game. A second chance was also given to experienced referees who had a bad night but were involved in difficult matches (Del Cerro). I am very curious about Rapallini, if he performes well once again, he could really dream big!

      Delete
    6. What gives you the impression that Oliver was planned for only one game??? The only referee planned for only one game could not be more clearly stated by the committee in Kovacs while other refs who got one game was due to performance

  17. I made a bit of a game prognosing remaining group phase results (wins of England, Scotland, Spain, Netherlands, Ukraine, Sweden, Germany, draw of Portugal-France. That's the round of 16 games resulting, and how I'd appoint. I know, early early..

    Germany-Finland: Slavko VINCIC (SVN)
    Czechia-Spain: Anthony TAYLOR (ENG)
    Belgium-Scotland: Daniele ORSATO (ITA)
    Italy-Ukraine: Artur DIAS (POR)
    Netherlands-Portugal: Clément TURPIN (FRA)
    Wales-Russia: Daniel SIEBERT (GER)
    Sweden-Switzerland: Fernando RAPALLINI (ARG)
    England-France: Felix BRYCH (GER)

    QUARTERFINALS:
Danny MAKKELIE (NED), Antonio MATEU LAHOZ (ESP), Cüneyt CAKIR (TUR) + one of the R16

    1. Netherlands-Portugal; Turpin?? Oh dear, I instantly got Ivanov memories... That match would require a top class referee; Brych or Cakir.

    2. Great performance of Ivanov. But not politically correct. Like López Nieto in Cameroon/ Germany in WC 2002

    3. In case of NL Portugal the only three options given that Lahoz has Por Fra should be Taylor, Brych or Rapallini given how he performs tomorrow. Orsato in his current form would screw it over big time im affraid.

  18. For Spanish Followers, please why does it take so long for the second tier season to be completed??? It took almost a month if not more after the regular season ended for the playoffs to conclude

  19. My prediction for KO games
R16: Brych, Makkelie, Karasev, Turpin, Artur Dias, Vincic, Taylor, Hategan
    QF: Cakir, Kuipers, Lahoz, Rapallini(?)
    SF: Brych, Makkelie
    F: Lahoz (Kuipers)

  20. OT: The A-League have released a behind the scenes video on Australian FIFA Referee Alex King. The footage which includes VAR and Comms audio is taken from an A-League match from the 2020/21 season between Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar.

It was really good of them to not just show when a referee has a good game but when they're not in form and are hanging tough.
    The match had two OFR's.

    1. Thank you for sharing this with us! We can see how referees suffer from taking big decisions wrong (even if the correct outcome is reached after OFR!). We are all people and everyone need respect. We should remember it when posting comments on the blog.

    2. Great video! At 3:44 into it, doesn't it look like his arm is playing the ball rather than vice versa, so handling call would have been supportable, no?
