    2. Same comment as last time, but he was always running like that... look at his old games... weird that no one noticed his running style before Spain - Poland... this has been his traditional movement on the field.

    3. Exactly, Anonymous. He always had to 'work hard' in order to keep up with play, not an athlete-type profile by any means.

    3. First, I thought of a farewell match because it's the only match so far with a refereeing team from 1 nation. But I think I'm wrong.

      Delete
    4. Tired or not tired, Orsato manages players through body language and communication very well, even when he deals with difficult personalities. This is rare and a lot harder to achieve than an athletic running style.

      Delete
    5. Management or not. A referee has to be physically up to the task. It's a diservice to the players to have a physically limited referee on the pitch.

      Delete
  5. The physical condition is definitely the big problem for Orsato.
Actually he couldn't get a big game in which both teams play a modern and quick football.

    1. But this game is a high tempo game. Just like that Spain vs Poland game where he struggled to keep up. I fear for him

    2. I hope it's his last match. Many refs are in condition. Not Orsato...

    3. Orsato can definitely continue. I'd assign him to any England match. They play at an overly cautious walking pace.

  6. Orsato already getting in the way of play.

  7. Did Orsato "invent" a new rule?
The ball never actually hit him. Yet he still stopped play.

    1. Did you see how easily it was a accepted by players? That is a quality of a top referee to get accepted no matter what he does.

      Delete
    3. Yea but he got in the way and prevented the Swedish play getting the ball. Not a new rule but is a index of the rule of interfering with play

      Delete
    4. That's a new and interesting perspective. Thanks.
Can you guide to where in the LoTG I might find that "index".
      Much appreciated.

    3. Orsato replaced Massa at preselections to WC.

Massa is 40 and is very very back respect to their collegs at the same age. Italy referees after Orsato are poor. From Rizzoli, Rocchi, Orsato, Tagliavento to Massa. Oh good.

    4. There is also Guida, who seems to be taking turns with Massa on the position of Italy's number 2 in the last seasons.

  12. Orsato is by far the best Italian referee, and his performances in this competition has been top notch. I think Orsato, Kuipers, Grande and Brych have all been harshly criticized on this blog.
But I think that these 4 referees have all been excellent so far. I'm sure UEFA is happy with them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "Top notch"??? Are you kidding us all? Orstato has been ok, I'd say. Kuipers has been decent. Grande below par. And Brych way below par in BEL-POR. How can UEFA send Turpin and Mateu home and keep Brych after BEL-POR? There must be respect for performance and football.

  13. Orsato has never been a great athlete, but it is clear that physically he is worse than usual: the season has been long and Rizzoli and Rosetti, also because of the few alternatives (especially in Italy), have used him continuously (even in useless matches in Serie B for media reasons). The comments about other possible Italian referees, however, are questionable: unfortunately, at the moment, AIA without Orsato is worth nothing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But Rizzoli and Rosetti should understand that Orsato is in the end of the cycle, his career of referee. They must prepare young referees.
Not important if 0 Italians referee going at WC.

      Delete
    2. I get that not all referee's are "built" the same. There have been plenty of great referee's that had a "un-athletic" appearance. But in those referee's, you actually saw they pushed themselves to put forth the effort to keep pace with play. In Orsato, I no longer see him push himself to put forth the "effort". He's become complacent and is all too happy to simply stand, walk, and jog.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's not about is it preferred or not it is about rules of the game.

      Delete
    2. In many matches, the team kits are chosen with one bright and one dark colour, so that the dark colour excludes the black kit.
Then we have several black GK kits (WAL, BEL, ESP, HUN, UKR, RUS, POR, AUT and CZE have worn it at least once), so the referee choses a different colour, if possible.
And finally, there are matches like today with a blue kit, where black would be possible, but the shiny colour provides the better contrast.

  20. Good performance so far in a fairly easy match. His fitness level is surely an issue, but I thought that it was a bit exaggerated in the comment section. He definetly is able to follow the play - not that elegant and easy-looking, but he can.

BELPOR for exemple with Brych (well physically), everybody know that it's a tough game, especially with portuguese players...

And others refs as Taylor and Makkelie on big games with a good physical performance did great job, best job than Orsato.

    2. Look at the counter attack at 56’. Orsato followed it with no problems. His running style is not the best, I agree, but still he was there.
Of course, SWEUKR is an easy match but still a tight one and can change at any time

      Delete
    3. Giovanni, Orsato doesn't have the most elegant ruuning style but that doesn 't keep him from taking good decisions.

Brych took awful decisions, was totally lost without control of the match. That is really serious and worrying for a ref. can't you see the difference?

      Delete
    4. I understand what you mean.
But, it's so easy to criticize his performance as "terrible"... Which ref with his toughest match can be do better ? He did big mistakes, I know but in general, he's for me a better ref and he can ref a last match.
I surprised that others ref with bad performances as CdC Still in competition

And compare this game with BELPOR is impossible. Be objective.

      Delete
    5. It’s useless to compare games. Decisions are decisions in tough and easy games.
It’s easy for a ref to turn an easy game to a difficult game because of bad decisions. So far, it’s not the case and nobody will talk about the referee

      Delete
    6. This game hasn't exactly been a "barn burner". More passes seem to be going sideways or backwards instead of forward. Ideal for the type of referee who wants run the least.

  25. This blog turns into a kindergarten when Orsato is refereeing. This game has had nothing in it, he’s doing just fine. Is he as fit as referees like Taylor, Vincic, etc? No. But is it proving to be detrimental to how he’s officiating? Not at all.

    4. @Giovanni, how can you say that?
Rosetti admitted two errors in Makkelie’s game TURITA and you can’t say “excellent without BELPOR”. It’s like saying: “I love that restaurant, but I don’t like the food”

      Delete
    5. Anonymous 22:31
Of course you can say excellent without BELPOR. It’s only 1 game in an entire career (starter of the post talked about Orsato’s career as well).
And Rosetti spoke about a punishable handball (TURITA) but did not say the referee was to blame. He could hardly see it, being behind the scene. And the offside decision, come on! Yes, mistake of AR1, but totally unimportant in the context of the match.
And guess what, after those two mistakes Rosetti awarded Makkelie ENGGER :)

    1. However, some of this judgements are not totally wrong IMO. For Kuipers, if he performs in QF as good as Cakir's performance yesterday, I would say Kuipers is more likely to get the final than Cakir. My names for SF would be Cakir and Makkelie, and Cakir or Kuipers for the final

One could argue for a penalty (sliding tackle by defender misses the ball and brings the opponent down), but also for SFP by the attacker (endangers the safety of his opponent by hitting his head).
But I think, Orsato's decision to not give any of it is justified.

    1. How is it justified not to give anything after that action?

    2. One could argue it was just a collision. Football does not expect a decision here

    3. Indeed hard to find good reasons. Maybe one could say, that both players are equally guilty for the clash. It feels just the fairest solution to me.
But I am certainly interested in other opinions, what would be the best decision here.

  66. My bets are:
Switzerland - Spain: Michael Oliver (ENG)
Italy - Belgium: Bjorn Kuipers (NED)
Denmark - Czech Republik: Slavko Vincic (SVN)
England - Ukraine: Ovidiu Hategan (ROU)

    3. I think someone else mentioned that Del Cerro is still in this EURO? If yes, my guess is that he will get QF because it will be very strange if he gets SF without R16 and QF

    4. Del Cerro can be Hategan's 4th official for example.

    5. That is possible too @Giovanni

  67. Ukraine won only one game 2-1 in regular time versus North Macedonia and they are in quarterfinals. There is something I'm missing at this tournament. Do you see this as fair?

    4. Unfair rules. Mostly, it's all about good luck. This is what I want to say.

    5. Yes i think so. also Portugal no win in their groups in 2016. At the end Portugal was Champ. This format very very unfair.

  68. AR1 was overruled by Orsato in 120+3', he was raising a flag for foul but Orsato decided to give a goal kick.

    1. Maybe the goal kick was seen as bigger advantage?

    2. How can you feel as AR there? You signal a clear foul that occurs under your eye and you are overruled by ref who is far away. Not the best feeling I can imagine. But honestly it was some kind of advantage both to SWE and to people watching. A quick goal kick was in general better than the need to set the ball close to corner arc for a fk being taken.
