  1. Hopefully this time 200 (199) comments will be enough for Skomina game... :)

    2. Bar was set pretty low by Cakir yesterday. Only way is up for Skomina and his crew.

    3. Cakir discussion in previous thread so why bringing it up here??

    4. 1) I mentioned Skomina in my comment
      2) Because I can :D

  2. Ok, it looks like we'll have Real-Liverpool in final, there is a chance for Italian referee, but with all due respect, I don't think Rocchi is the one who deserves to officiate CL final this season.

  3. This game is already over. Should be routine job for Skomina without lot of pressure.

    1. Well... ;-)
Btw did Skomina miss a penalty at 8'?

    2. 1:1, nothing is over yet, still alot of football to be played.

@Mikael - Seems like they missed penalty for pushing with hands..

      Delete
    3. And yet a few dodgy penalty decisions early on. The push in the back to me seems like a likelier penalty than not. The tackle (and flip) at the top of the area rather not (defender allowed to hold his position).

  4. Well, let's wait before making certain statements, because this Champions League has shown us everything.

Possible penalty / free kick missed by Skomina for Liverpool some minutes ago, there was a clear contact and attacker from Liverpool was stopped in his action.

    1. Sounds strange, but IMO that scene is either a clear free kick (if outside) or rather no penalty (if inside) by the common practice, that the bar for a whistle is set much higher in the penalty area and the fact that the ball was already played away.
Of course, theoretically a wrong argumentation, but practically speaking...

      Delete
    2. IMO that's a missed penalty :(

      Delete
    3. Free kick. Foul is outside the penalty area.

      Delete
  5. Interesting that almost noone noticed the pushing from the back (Mane) in 8th minute. There was excellent replay few minutes ago. I would like to read your oppinios, especially comparing this push with push when Oliver gave penalty, and with slight push in Liverpool's PK area, which was assessed as foul in favor of Liverpool.
This moment Skomina totally missed foul and very possible YC for Kolarov.

  7. 2 missed penalties for Liverpool, foul against Dzeko before 1-2

    1. For me whistling any of those would be way to soft

      Delete
    2. I think 1st one is a penalty missed... 2nd one I haven't seen so waiting for some video!!

      Delete
    3. Boyh decisions are good. First one reminded me of the Real - Juve one.

      Delete
  8. Good (expected) co-operation by Skomina to tell AR1 that it was a defender hitting the ball not an attacker, and hence to allow the 1-2. A good fact, if one is remembering to Paris or Sevilla for the Slovenian, showing his positive development in the years since.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nevertheless, it wasn't offside. Clear situation, even if the attacker played the ball. I didn't notice possible push on Dzeko.

      Delete
  9. Now the game seems to be decided in favor of Liverpool, but I'm not watching a concentrated Skomina, to be honest.
    So-so the Slovenian so far...

    2. He should not think that before the end of today game...

      Delete
    3. He is human... Flesh and bones like you and me... And there is a thing called subconscious mind :)

      Delete
    4. I agree with Soham plus result of the game

      Delete
    5. Agreed, but I think one can feel for him. After one of the few referees that made a great season in 2012/13 he got Barcelona 0-4 Bayern, and he has 'that' match again tonight.
Fully agreed with Philipp, I would rather have seen Skomina in Madrid than Çakir.

      Delete
    6. You are talking here like this is some inessential match. This is CL semifinal! Not much above that! He got EL final last year and will get CL final next year.

      Delete
    7. I am just saying it would be much different if it was tie match

      Delete
    8. It's an assignment that demands his full attention and his best performance. It be unfair to the teams and go against the spirit of the game if he under appreciates the match.

      Delete
    9. Amazingly, I'm with Castilli here: Skomina is a professional who is expected to work like one. He is allowed to be annoyed at not getting the final, or at not getting Real Madrid, etc. But he is a professional referee on the (second) biggest stage of the planet, and one should expect full concentration on the match, regardless of other circumstances. Even Pitana in the 7-1 semi in 2014 remained fully concentrated :)

  10. You are right Chefren. Too many mistakes only in half an hour

    ReplyDelete
  11. 40' live impression without waiting for a replay: correct to play on, attacker looked for the contact, maybe not simulation, but surely more attacker's fault than defender's foul...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. ... and now after the replay: simulation for me, missed YC by Skomina. However, it looked clear that this wasn't a penalty.

      Delete
  12. Shaarawy with dive maybe, missed yc?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Now YC to Lovren,no other option.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 44' YC for SPA: correct decision by Skomina, however, let me underline, what a reaction by the Slovenian when the player started a protest... he looked too aggressive with his face, if you ask me.
Today Skomina is not calm, I don't know why.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The way he showed the card wasn't very good IMO. Not the best performance but neither a bad one. If he continues like that in second half, I don't think that somebody will have big problems with the referee. And that would be fine, as we all know what happened in last weeks after the matches from Cakir, Oliver and Mateu.

But you are right, somehow he seems to be a bit nerved today.

      Delete
    2. Fully agree with your words...

      Delete
    3. I think Skomina is angry with some former bald Italian referee today :D

      Delete
    4. Agree, the match is tense and he is not calm as usual. Soham, maybe you're right he looks a bit angry but not necessary with the person you mention.. 😉

    5. This comment has been removed by the author.

      Delete
    6. God knows, it's only a speculation anyway :/ Might be that he got scolded by Mrs. Skomina in the morning :/

      Delete
    7. Similar situation in 84': he seems to be not calm enough. And he pushes Manolas away, which completely unnecessary. A referee should generally avoid such strong physical contact in general I think

      Delete
  15. Little chat between Lovren and Skomina in Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have honestly seen a convincing Skomina so far, IMO correct no-call on 2nd Liverpool goal, and I don't see the two possible penalties as clear ones. One of them seems rather outside the box.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My views regarding first half:

09' - there is a push on Mané in front of AAR1, most likely the referee crew assessed it as not enough for a penalty and looking at how Mané fell down, I can agree with it

11' - there is a contact but outside the box, so talking about two missed penalties is very wrong; to be fair, Liverpool player played the ball, would have never reached it and his running path was not in direction of ball, so play on is an optimal call if you ask me

24' - missed stamp, possible YC

40' - correct no penalty call after El Shaarawy's exaggerated fall, possible YC for a dive

41' - good Jug's reaction on conflict in front of him, he was very quick jumping between two players

44' - correct free kick and YC for SPA, really strong reaction on dissent, I would applaud him for being so strict with disssent, I don't interpret it as too aggressive

    8,4 for now

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree completely with everything

      Delete
    2. About the push from behind: I am 100% convinced that this push is stronger than one in Madrid. Both hands on the back, push, attacker fall - if for you penalty in Madrid was correct, than this one has to be, too.
As I said, about 10-12 minutes later there was much, much easier push in Liverpool's PK area and Skomina whistled a foul from attacker. Inconsistency? Those situations are absolutely comparable.

      Delete
    3. Dealt well with Lovren's dissent... Stood firm and gave a death stare... No eccentric gesturing and no agression... Well done :)

      Delete
    4. RayHD, let me tell you: You would be referees' favorite referee observer :-)

      Delete
    5. I don't think so, I can easily deduce marks for some lacks, to be honest, but am not keen to award crucial mistakes. UEFA observers are more lenient than me, believe me ;)

      Delete
  18. Not the usual Skomina.

He penalized 3 incidents for so and so pushes, and didn’t penalize the 8’ clear push on Mane. Just because it was in the penalty box?

I’m not saying it should’ve been a penalty, but since he’s giving for slight pushes, he definitely should’ve given the penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Here I fully agree, he whistles slight pushes everywhere outside the box. Inconsistent approach.

      Delete
  19. 49': unluckily wrong flag by AR1, and then there was a potential penalty for Roma... game had been stopped, in any case.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Big mistake then.

      Delete
    2. To me it seemed like upper body part of Dzeko was in offside

  20. 49' : Wrong offside called... Missed penalty for Roma!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can'ty say missed penalty, game had been stopped :)
But yes, penalty would have been called in case of game allowed...

      Delete
    2. That was very spontaneous and would've happened anyway... That was a very wrong flag sadly :(

      Delete
    3. Good offside call. Upper body is offside.

      Delete
    4. Totally good offside call!!

      Delete
    5. To me it seemed like upper body part of Dzeko was in offside

      Delete
    6. Any video available, anonymous? Upper body looked level to me?

      Delete
  21. Now close offside call

    ReplyDelete
  22. And now goal from small, very small, but still offside. Huh

    ReplyDelete
  23. Possible missed offside in Dzeko goal? Right foot seems a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Potential missed offside before 2-2 by Roma... That's 2 wrong offside decisions by AR1 in about 3 minutes!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO Skomina's biggest weakness in the past have been his assistants who haven't been as consistent as himself. As concrete examples Man Utd - Leverkusen and Sevilla - Bilbao have been matches in the past where some really bad offside decisions have been made. Today they weren't quite as obvious but one should still expect better on this level I believe

      Delete
    2. Yes that's true not the strongest ARs... But still Skomina, Praprotnik and Vukan's team is the strongest ever for Skomina!!

      Delete
    3. But maybe it is still not good enough? I could imagine that it is a reason why he is not getting the CL final (yet)

      Delete
    4. In comparison to Mazic that maybe a reason... The Serbian has two fantastic ARs, I must say!!

      Delete
    5. Ever since Arhar and Stančin retired, a big problem for Skomina. Even they tried an Italian AR after the important mistakes of Zunic, and that breakdown of communication made the big mistake in Sevilla.
I think Prapotnik and Vukan are decent ARs (relatively) but probably not more, Skomina is not so lucky as Kuipers, Çakir et al.

      Delete
    6. Exactly! Same applies to Rocchi, which might even put him in front of Skomina in the eyes of the committee (especially after this evening)

      Delete
    7. @Mikael You're right... In my opinion Kuipers, Cakir and Mazic has the best ARs in Europe... Even Brych falls a little short in this area...

@Lewis : Rocchi would be okay for an EL final IMO... But for CL final, I can't see him ahead of Mazic at this moment...

      Delete
    8. Personally, I would prefer Mazic too. Rocchi has the advantage of having handled a big KO game this season (Real-PSG) and being Italian probably helps well

      Delete
  25. Liverpool claimed PK for handball, IMO correct play on.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 55' : Correct FK just outside the box

    ReplyDelete
  27. 63': missed penalty for Roma, clear handball.
Unluckily, not on AAR side, so missed by all officials.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Any chance of Skomina whistling the final is over now!

      Delete
    2. Skomina needed to react and run diagonally to have any perception on that.

      Delete
    3. And DOGSO.

A similar incident maybe happened yesterday, although tonight's was clearer.

      Delete
    4. Exactly Mikael... Positioning wasn't good... Lacked anticipation IMO

      Delete
    5. But tonight nall was going in direction of goal,so if penalty was whistled then RC should have been issued.

      Delete
  28. Missed PK and RC in 63'.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 63' : Missed penalty for Roma for massive, deliberate handball... Very difficult to spot for Skomina

    ReplyDelete
  30. PK (and RC for DOGSO) missed?

    ReplyDelete
  31. 63'.Now big missed penalty for Roma clear handball from Arnold

    ReplyDelete
  32. Min 63 missed penalty for ASR for Handball. Plus a RC.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not so clear penalty IMO. It was really short distance and no time for reaction, and also not unnatural position

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Would you define that position as natural?
No reason for the arm to be there...
This is a clear punishable handball.

      Delete
    2. Filip, you should download and watch UEFA RAP (you have the link on the right side). This handling is absolutely punishable. Skomina totally missed the handling - if so he would whistled it and gave RC.

      Delete
    3. Well considering movement of the rest of the body and the fact that arm was moving towards the the body not from it i IMO it can be judged as natural position

      Delete
    4. Fully agreed, unnatural position, made himself bigger and DOGSO

      Delete
  34. Skomina’s position was perfect: how can you say that it was difficult to spot? Crucial mistake here...
This is a clear lack of focus in the match by the Slovenian.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I only saw one replay but I thought Skomina had a 0° angle. Maybe Jug had some chances to see it?

      Delete
    2. Mikael, no chance for Jug IMO... He would be seeing the entire thing through the net, if at all

      Delete
  35. 63': Missed PK and DOGSO Red...
To be honest, I'm so annoyed that in the last weeks the referees (Skomina today, Oliver, Cakir yesterday...) delivered good performances and always there's this crucial mistake...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oliver had no crucial mistake???

      Delete
    2. Collum last week also with a acceptable performance, but a penalty missed. I can't stand this anymore.

      Delete
    3. Just shows the importance of VAR at this level... I hope Ceferin is watching!!

      Delete
    4. Maybe Oliver hadn't the crucial mistake, but a very controversial decision to take with a lot of discussions. Can't there be a match without big mistakes or controversies anymore?

      Delete
    5. Maybe with VAR the major controversies will decrease...

      Delete
    6. I hope so, but honestly speaking I think that VAR will cause more problems than it avoids. Just look at Confed Cup...

      Delete
    7. Soham, I bet A. Čeferin is watching but as he emphasised in some recent interviews he is against the prompt introduction of VAR.. but prefers to be tested before introduction in CL..

      Delete
    8. A. Ceferin has no point of debate at all... It's being used in the World Cup so it's ready to go in CL as well... This season crucial mistakes have been far too many, I have to say!!

      Delete
    9. Soham, based on the experience from MLS: No, VAR will absolutely not lead to a decrease in controversies and difficult decisions. You think a VAR would have solved the Real-Juve penalty issue?

      Delete
    10. That was a penalty for me anyway... In that case the referee was the problem for people... Imagine Brych or Kuipers whistling it... Would've accepted a lot more by media and fans... Just because it was Oliver, such a huge fuss was made out of it!!

      Delete
  36. Now a good no-offside by AR1.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not sure whether the ball was going into the net, in case RC would have been possible as well.
We can't go on in this way at high level.
We can discuss about good or excellent perormances, but everything is decided to the incidents.
I'm really sorry, now this should cost Skomina CL final and maybe committee was aware of this big risk.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO Committee never planned him for a final... There is someone else in the radar... Now imagine like this happens with Rocchi tomorrow... Who will the Committee turn to apart from Mazic?

      Delete
    2. It's a clear goal denied, so it should've been a RC. VAR is needed in the so dynamic football nowadays. Unfortunately, we won't experience it next UEFA season, too...

      Delete
    3. Expect the unexpected... what if Mazic gets injured?

      Delete
    4. EL final to Hategan?

      Delete
    5. UEFA = Leading the way and being at the edge of innovation by keeping things in the Stone Age.

      Delete
    6. Final appointments might depend on Rocchi's performance tomorrow.
Beside the mentioned Orsato and Hategan, I can even imagine Makkelie for the EL final.

      Delete
    7. If Makkelie gets a final then I've to say Collina hasn't learnt anything from the Oliver episode... Coming to Orsato and Hategan, neither is ready for an European final just yet, IMO

      Delete
    8. If Arsenal go through, I really could imagine Turpin in Lyon, who would deserve it but I think it would be too early for the French.

      Delete
    9. Marseille is a club from France, Mikael :D

      Delete
    10. Of course ;-)
Turpin needs two "upsets" tomorrow, for his chances for the EL Final.

      Delete
    11. Despite the fact that I'm romanian, I can't even think that Hategan will whistle EL final. I can't believe something like that.
On the other hand I think he's capable. He already whistled two important semifinals in his career: Manchester United- Celta Vigo (very good performance) and Brazil- Honduras (Olympic Games, Maracana, Neymar etc)

      Delete
    12. Brazil - Iraq at the Olympics for Hategan was one of the best refereeeing I saw at a FIFA championship ever!
I hope that he can attend the EL Final, I am really sorry for him what happened in Belfast, he is a fantastic referee who has developed so much in the last years. His approach to dissent is perhaps the best in whole Elite Category IMO.

      Delete
  38. To be clear: besides Mazic, Skomina is my favorite ref. He is Slovenian, and i love Slovenia :-) That's not so important of course, he is one excellent ref fine great style of refereeing.
But I have to admit that I have never watch such a bad performance from Slovenian crew. In fact, I am more than disappointed with refs' performances in those semifinals! By far, the best performance was from Turpin. The rest were far below expectations (not speaking about Collum - didn't watch him).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. However for most of the crucial mistakes, you can't really blame referees... VAR is only solution there, I will repeat that again and again!

      Delete
    2. @Chefren totally correct you are!!

      Delete
    3. I agree, I absolutely do. VAR is a need! I don't know why we still don't have it. But we don't and that means that THE BEST REFS should be more concentrated. They can not allow so many mistakes - if they did that in the past - they wouldn't be here now, in position they are. They earned it, of course, but they cannot live on their old glory. Those number of mistakes from the best refs are unacceptable at this level and in such important matches.

      Delete
    4. I would urge you to have a strong look at MLS this season before demanding the VAR...the experience is very far from effective. The VAR has added no precision and many more useless red cards. You can watch the "Instant Replay" videos on Mlssoccer.com - the commentators are laymen (an analyst and a former player turned analyst), but they do a good coverage of the situations and are often right. It's not good.

      Delete
  39. 75': borderline call by AR2, maybe player was onside...

    ReplyDelete
  40. YC for Florenzi for a reckless challenge, borderline for me.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 75' reckless or SFP? I have my doubts...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Question to all : Considering rather haphazard refereeing performances throughout this CL KO stage by almost all referees at least once, is it time for Collina to leave??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is time for Collina to put kit on and to go to the pitch, to show how old master does it! :-)

      Delete
    2. My perfect combination is Collina to stay plus VAR

      Delete
    3. Yes that's the only thing left to be done :D So Collina for the Real Madrid v Liverpool match at Kyiv with Hugh Dallas and Mark Batta as ARs?? :D

      Delete
    4. They could be only AARs :-)

      Delete
    5. In 2012/13 there was the same situation, only a few referees always showing good performances: Kuipers, Lannoy(!), Skomina, Mazic, Webb.

      Delete
    6. Among the WC referees only Mazic and Karasev(!!) has had no underwhelming performance... Rest of the 8 referees all had some or the other controversy at some point in the KO stage!!

      Delete
    7. Mazic and Karasev will have their "chances" :-)

      Delete
    8. Mazic didn't get a CL KO game and IIRC Karasev not a single match after EL R16 (until tomorrow). That's the reason.

      Delete
  43. 3-2 by Roma... if they had scored earlier in the game, they could have tried to qualify. A crucial mistake is significant in any case, despite of the score in which it happens.
I'm really sorry for Skomina, because without that handball, his performance could have been assessed at least as overall OK.

  44. Impressive prevention by Skomina these last minutes

    1. Unfortunately missed PK and RC spoils the entire performance :(

      Delete
    2. Sooo funny. Yesterday there were AT LEAST two missed penalties determining the outcome of the match but it was "solid overall". Today (and I still have to look into lots of incidents) there might have been a missed PK (without influencing the tie, though) and that "spoils the entire performance". What a joke!

    3. Plus the fact he didn't whistle the earlier one makes this complete rubbish!!

      Delete
  47. Huuuh Is this a penalty???

    ReplyDelete
  48. 90+3' Correct PK for handball in front of AAR.

  49. Wrong penalty, arm was in natural position..

    ReplyDelete
  50. It was whistled only because seen by AAR1... that's all.
But about handballs there is more than a big confusion.

    1. Two wrongs can never ever make a right... This is the first thing I learnt in refereeing... Never to even think about levelling things up with a 2nd mistake...

    2. You are absolutely right. But luckily the mistakes are in favor of one side and the consequence is not that bad. 99% of the people believe Liverpool will advance to the final and this is what people see. I would say Skomina is lucky because of this. Otherwise he would be the second Tom Henning.

  58. Well, UEFA is facing now an important decision. Refereeing level in CL second leg semifinals has not been good enough. Next is the WC which will include VAR. If it works well, what will be UEFA's excuse when inevitable human mistakes occur next season in UCL/UEL and people already know that they could have been avoided? If it doesn't, they only have to say that they won't activate it yet. However, the system must be installed and available for next season. Then, depending on WC result, they could turn it on or not.

So, it is time for UEFA to decide if they want to face the risk of having more mistakes next year even though that can be prevented and make an investment that, in the worst case, won't pay off for a season or two, or not to invest that money and face trouble (and put pressure on the referees) for sure next season.

    2. It was not flawless by Skomina but there's no possible comparison with what happened yesterday in Madrid.

  59. Footage of the alleged "clear handball", please?? Apart from that, can't see any crucial mistake. One thing is for sure: Skomina's performance did not decide who goes through to the final.

  60. Not one but 3 mistakes, missed penalty for Arnold hand ball, missed RED CARD, incorrect penalty in last min
VAR is a MUST at every copmetitive level !!!

  61. Before the final assignment, I want to say that this KO stage of Champions League has been characterised by too many mistakes.
The big problem remains the detection of deliberate handballs, but there were also other significant and obvious mistakes.
I will not blame referees, but surely a committee had to ensure a better officiating, I don't know how, but for sure they have some faults. I repeat that without VAR nowadays it is impossible to go on, but some mistakes had definitely to be avoided.
In addition, there was a more than poor management of referees appointments.
I waited before writing such harsh words, but we all expected more.

  62. The penalty awarded by Skomina at 93'... Just saw more replays... The hand is at the most natural position ever... Never ever a deliberate handball in a million years... I'm really sorry for Skomina but it was a poor performance in a rather easy game!!
