  1. 5 games of the Netherlands. 3x Schärer and 2x Mariani. Difference.

    1. The difference is one game.

    2. don't have a clue why they didn't swap Schärer and Nyberg

    3. if you remember all the referees were divided into 2 groups, one refereed only in hungary, the other only in slovenia. Scherer was in the Hungarian group, Nyberg in the Slovenian group, like today

    4. it has advantage of knowing teams. no need to tactical analysis again, good drawing on previous knowledge and experience of games.

still wondering where the BOGAR-Tamas is. Is his Hungarian nation where it is played

  2. Umut Meler/Mariani/Peljto in final?

    1. My bet is Frankowski. (Also in the slovenian group)

    2. Meler impressed me the most in this competition - his approach to both his group games was IMO excellently judged. So he would be my choice (Peljto as F/O).

    3. In Russia - Iceland he was far from good IIRC...

  3. This morning UEFA Chief refereeing officer, Roberto Rosetti, illustrated LotG news and updates, while the Integrity officer of the FIGC, Giovanni Spitaleri, spoke in front of the audience composed by the players and the technical staff of the national team about match fixing.

“It was a very productive meeting - underlined Roberto Rosetti - to share the refereeing guidelines in view of the next European Championship. The players were very interested in following the instructions ”.

In particular, the Chief refereeing officer illustrated two changes: in the event of an accidental touch by hand by a teammate, with the action that will then end with a goal, the goal will now be confirmed as valid; furthermore, the goalkeeper will no longer be able to catch the ball with his hands after having voluntarily given it to a teammate and having immediately received back the ball, by the latter, with a touch made not with foot.

Rosetti then explained some updates to the Azzurri, recommending himself in particular on avoiding protests to prevent sanctions, and specifically illustrating the circumstances on which the VAR can intervene.

    1. ''furthermore, the goalkeeper will no longer be able to catch the ball with his hands after having voluntarily given it to a teammate and having immediately received back the ball, by the latter, with a touch made not with foot.''

I assume this is about goal kicks. So what do they want the decision to be? Indirect and yellow to the GK?

    2. Yeah I don't understand what the 2nd half of the 3rd paragraph is referring to?

  5. Remarkably, Kuipers indicated in an interview on national TV yesterday that he will decide after the European Championship whether he will continue as an international referee. He still feels very fit, and the World Cup is 'only' 1.5 years later.

    4. from what i know either from uefa documentary as well as from other sources, i can tell that kuipers is not dependent on the money he receives from refereeing. and one year more or less is "only" roughly 100k euros more or not...on the other hand: why lose him?

    5. Lolll😂😂😂😂, this just means that Danny Makellie will attend the 2022 World Cup as VAR once again if Kuipers sets his eyes for the next World Cup.

    6. @anonymous 14:36: Because all things have a time. Same goes for persons. In altruism and respect of the generation of referees to come, I think people who benefitted from a system 12 years should recognise that now it's time younger colleagues have their time.

    7. I want to say this with all respect for one of the greatest football referees ever - his UEFA KO stage this season is actually not a thesis for going on (another) two years, and not least to referee at WC 2022 aged fifty(!).

    8. With all respect to all the refs I want to say refs like Orsato and Turpin would wish to ever get at a Kuipers/Brych/Lahoz level regardless of age.

  6. With some delay, a few comments on U21 POR-ITA refereed by the French trio. I'll start by saying it wasn't a fully convincing performance from my point of view. This time I find it more useful to analyse each aspect separately.

    31 May 2021, 21:00 CET - Ljubljana
    PORTUGAL - ITALY
    Referee: François Letexier (FRA)
Assistant Referee 1: Cyril Mugnier (FRA)
Assistant Referee 2: Mehdi Rahmouni (FRA)
    Fourth Official: Jérôme Brisard (FRA)

    Tactical approach:
Letexier opted for a generally strict line, especially in the beginning minutes and around minute 30-35. Let's just remember that 3 fouls were whistled in the earliest 3 minutes. This was IMO a smart strategy since the game could have clearly heated up quickly. Unfortunately he did not maintain the same clear line throughout the game, as I will mention later.

    Foul detection:
Not extremely accurate detection in what can be assessed as a medium challenging game, with several infringements. For instance, a soft defensive free kick at 27' but most importantly missed (clear) free kicks at 4', 114', and probably at 87'.
Crucial decisions: penalty appeal POR at 13' for holding, no replay was shown, it looked like a probable mutual holding and referee must be backed. Other penalty appeal by POR at 30', handball was not punishable (natural position).

    Disciplinary control:
Most YCs were correct, 6 issued to ITA and 1 to POR. SYC to ITA #6 was correctly issued after a reckless elbow. However, some other cards were missed at the end of the game, POR #20 at 93' (illegal use of arm), POR #6 at 98' (late reckless tackle) and POR #9 at 121' (persistent infringement). Furthermore, I would have liked at least a stern warning to ITA #15 at 50' for dissent if not a YC.

    Personality:
Here is an area where Letexier could further improve his with authority on the pitch and rapport with players. Example at 30', before a corner kick, he warned two opponents, but they both turned away before he finished his speech. Being distant is fine but there were moments where he could have aroused more confidence.

    Physical condition and positioning:
Definitely a strength, due to his excellent fitness and optimal positioning throughout the game. He was able to sprint and stay on the diagonal line until the last minutes of the extra time.

    Assistant referees:
Very good performance from both assistants. Most important decisions came at 25' (tight onside AR1), 58' (onside on POR goal AR1) 60' (onside on ITA goal AR2), 74' (onside AR2).

In short, a decent performance for Letexier within the 90 minutes, whereas in extra time disciplinary and foul detection dropped in accuracy. Points for improvement in prevention and presence on the pitch. Good ARs.

If someone else has watched the game, I'd be happy to know your thoughts.

    1. 4-3 for Portugal in extra time was an offside position.

    2. I disagree Ref545, where is the offside? (video below)

    3. Yes, you're absolutely right! Of course the 4-3 in extra-time was not offside.

3-1 for Portugal in 58' was scored due to an offside position. The scene was shown by Italian Rai1 and the foot of Gonzalo Ramos was in offside.

      Delete
    4. Rewatching it the foot might indeed put the scoring player in offside position at 58'. But honestly it was impossible to detect at normal speed. Not a clear mistake for me.

  8. A very well spotted simulation by Nyberg, perfectly positioned.

  9. 60': possible penalty to Spain, to be rewatched, I think rather penalty.

    1. Agreed, the Spanish attacker was definitely tripped by the defender. Questionable whether or not he was still able to challenge for the ball, but the trip was clear.

    3. IMO it's a penalty, the tripping is quite relevant, furthermore the Spanish attacker made the difference before the contact.

      Delete
    4. IMO penalty. Quite significant tripping, the defender deliberately keeps his leg in a 90° angle in order to stop the attacker from passing and playing the ball.

  10. As far as I could see, solid performance so far by Schärer. Despite having showed minor mistakes in foul detection in a not too difficult match, he handled the match with calmness and an elegant approach, which led to a high acceptance level.

    1. Interesting to analyze, it seems as at first Nyberg wanted to play on, maybe without booking the player due to the contact. Indeed there was a contact but never enough for a penalty. Then, he saw the player asking for penalty and he decided to book him for simulation based on that. Possible? Otherwise he would have "forgiven" him. The attitude shown afterwards by player for sure played a role in referee's decision.

    2. I also have the same impression, Chefren. Totally unnatural fall by the way, such a soft contact would never lead to that.

      Delete
    3. @Chefren if I'm not wrong, exactly the same happened with Orsato in Fiorentina-Roma two years ago (very soft contact on Castrovilli, who asked a PK after that and was booked).

      Delete
    4. I think so too: Possibly, he wanted to play on because of the minor contact, but realized that the POR player actually claimed that it would be a PK. He decided not to accept that manipulative behavior and went for the IFK + YC. I actually really like that call and also his way of issuing it (smiling, but with certainity).

  12. Good and solid performance by Sandro Schärer, the only point of evaluation being the management of time wasting and disregulating behavior in the final stages. The Dutch were (correctly) sanctioned for their reactions, but the German were allowed to delay/disregulate restarts and added time didn’t compensate for that either.

  13. Schärer stays on his way to excellence. Good, consistent foul detection, good management, very good body language and natural authority, good communication, fully respected by players. Big talent!
