  1. For me, it's an undeserved appointment. Meler, Mariani or Peljto (also if not available) would have more appropriated.

    1. Why are you thinking so strictly? He had one of the best performance in quarter finals, otherwise it's good to see new faces for such important matches.

  2. Well, Batta observation in previous game meant indeed something for Kruashvili. He was in focus by committee.
We can assume that the decisive penalty call in the very last minute of the game has been highly praised, in addition to that the performance in quarterfinal was surely the best of the three in the tournament for him. However, if we look back to group stage, we should say that there were other referee who would have deserved more this call. In any case, congratulations, because it is a big success for a referee from such country and for sure something for the future (I read this choice by Rosetti also in this way).

    1. I agree, probably the country that the referee comes from has the role in this appointment. IMO Meler would have been the best candidate.

  3. OT: I just tried to simulate a possible EURO 2020 tournament constellation with Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands reaching the semi-finals. I wonder who in that case would be the most probable referee for the final based on the current standing within UEFA. All the top candidates would be out and I am note sure whether names like Cakir, Hategan, Taylor or Turpin are top contestants at the moment for different reasons.

    1. Well, only 2 of the countries go to the final.. So the other two can referee the final. I think it is unnecessary if referees are sent home because their country is making it to the semi-finals. Why shouldn't Brych be able to whistle the final if Germany is eliminated in the semi-final?

For the semi-finals Cakir and Taylor are very good options.

    2. Indeed I agree with anonymous for sure in that case committee would "close eyes" and appoint referee from that countries in the other games, even with the presence of their national teams.
But what Peter says generally is absolutely true: the Elite referees with full trust by committe are coming from a very few countries.
Hopefully somebody outside the "highly-trusted" circle will surprise committee with outstanding performances.

      Delete
    3. But would it be a wise (and accepted) decision to appoint for example Brych for the final Italy - Spain when one of them defeated Germany in the semi-final?

      Delete
    4. In 2012 Proenca was appointed for the final after Portugal got defeated by Spain in the semis.

    5. I remember Pedro Proença (POR) being appointed for the EURO 2012 final Spain-Italy after Portugal was knocked out on penalties by Spain in the semi-final. It was said at the time (no idea if true) that Rizzoli would have been appointed for the match if Italy had been knocked out by Germany in the other semi-final, as well.

It seems as if the neutrality principle is not as strict at a EURO compared to a World Cup, especially with regard to the top countries. Makes sense really with Elite referees used to encountering most top players at the EURO 4-5 times a season in European competitions anyway.

    6. @Peter I believe it would be perfectly fine. The problem would be more in the previous KO rounds if German referee is officiating the game which decides the opponent of his national team, but then again if we dont have trust in top 10 UEFA refs professionality, then there is a huge problem.

    7. Maybe Collina gave Rosetti the advice "Always expect the unexpected" with the result that the latter requested Señor Rapallini as a joker for the final. ;-)

    8. IMO, Taylor and Turpin are also strong candidates, who could be considered for the final, if their tournament performances are alright.
I mean, Turpin got a CL QF 2nd leg and the EL final - so he is clearly trusted by UEFA.
For Taylor it's less clear, because he wasn't available for the latter stages due to the involved teams. But he got a lot of top games in the last seasons, so I think, he is also quite high in UEFA's pecking order.

      Delete
    9. Taylor for the final?! Absolutely not at his level. IMO Top candidates are Kuipers and Brych. Second best are Lahoz, Orsato, Turpin, Cakir. I don't think we will see other referees than these in the final.

      Delete
    10. I cannot see anyone else then Kuipers, Brych or Lahoz. Orsato and Makkelie are outsiders. The rest is just maximum SF/QF level for me.

      Delete
    11. @Thomas

It is true. According to Howard Webb's bio ...

If Portugal is out: Proença for FINAL
If Italy is out: Rizzoli for FINAL
If both POR & ITA are in:Webb for FINAL

      Delete
    12. That almost cant be true, since that would have meant that Webb would have done the final with Van Roekel, who assisted him in the QF.... IMO that wouldnt have happened

      Delete
    13. No stress on this situation. Netherlands team won't reach the SF. :) I can say as a dutchmen. So if and when Kuipers and / or Makkelie perform on the top level we all expect all the referee's there is country limitation less.

“It’s hard to put into words, I still feel very excited,” he says. “I was actually at the airport, going back to Georgia after refereeing Monday’s [Under-21] quarter-final between Spain and Croatia, when I got the call telling me I would be taking charge of the final. I felt quite emotional about it, but I couldn’t let my emotions out too much – there were too many people around me!

  10. Interesting from CONMEBOL. Colombian VAR and AVAR of Uruguay - Paraguay game have been suspended because they made "serious and evident mistakes" by wrongly disallowing a goal for offside in 23'.

    Official statement:

    Video:

They made only a control on the offside call by assistant referee, but without analyzing the real impact of the player in offside in the action.

    2. Small remark: the suspended ones are Nicolas Gallo (VAR) and Miguel Roldán (AR2, Wilmar Roldan´s brother).
I dont know why Andres Rojas (AVAR) isnt on that list.

Fantastico. Nestor dovrebbe venire in Italia per insegnare.

      Delete
    3. Fantastico, Pitana! :)

      Delete
    4. I think he is exaggerating there. It's disrespectful. With his body he doesn't need to push players around. If they did that to a referee they would be suspended.

      Delete
    5. I think this is not acceptable behaviour from a referee.

      Delete
    6. I think so too. To touch a player like That isn‘t a appropriate behaviour
and not what you‘d like Players to do.

      Delete
    7. This is exactly why I don't think Pitana is a great referee. Pitana succeeds on the pitch by his sheer presence, but does not back it up with strong soft skills. If his approach doesn't work, it leaves him disarmed on the pitch. See above.

Don't get me wrong, I think Pitana is a very good referee and his style of refereeing is actually perfect for a World Cup with many different football cultures. However, I don't think Pitana could succeed as much in a Champions League setting with high technical difficulty, for example, simply because he does not appear to do much match-reading.

  17. 43', possible SFP, foul by German player.
A few minutes before (40'), maybe missed foul outside penalty area.
Otherwise, expected level first half by Kruashvili for me.

  18. I actually liked Kruashvili in the first half. His approach seemed fitting and his lenient, distant stlye was beneficial for the match. Some inaccuracies in foul detection make it a very solid/expected level performance for my taste.
43' is quite an interesting scene. I think, technically it's a SFP case with zero possibility to reach the ball. But in a international final, it's not clear enough - supportable.

  19. I think Kruashvili did an over-all decent job. Maybe some discrepancies in disciplinary matters, but I'd certainly say he deserves an 8.3 and compliments for this approach.

I do think his verbal warnings deserve some improvement. They all seemed a bit too much the same for me.
