  1. How many games, 54 if I counted correctly, that's surely a record for a round of a UEFA club competition, I would dare to say!
I remember from the previous EL editions a record of 43 games in a preliminary round, if I'm not wrong, in any case no more than 47 for sure.

    1. First qualifying round: 33 games
      Second qualifying round: 54 games
      Third qualifying round: 32 games
      Play-off round:22 games

    2. Plus 13 in CLQ. If we know that referees won't be repeated in same round, with rematches it means 134 referees have to be appointed in this qualifying round for both competitions. I wonder how they decide in this situation what is appropriate match for each referee

    3. Or appropriate ref for each match. Whatever you like better

  2. Out of curiosity: both Dankert and Dingert with Kazakh teams.

    1. What a change, from EURO2020 final to Conference L. Qual i in Kazakhstan!

    2. Also three of their four ARs have been at the EURO.

    3. Mark Borsch was part of team Brych at euro and now he is with Dankert in Uefa Conference League qualifiers. From the grass on Wembley to Nur Sultan at 15:00 CET. That's a change!

  3. Albanian referee in Kosovo. That's odd. I wouldn't be surprised if we see change there

    1. I was surprised by that. I wonder if we'll ever see a Hungarian referee handling a FC DAC 1904 match or an Albanian referee handling Shkëndija...

  4. To repeat my question from previous post. Are referees from cat3 that are appointed for both first and second QR more likely candidates to be promoted to Cat2 then those with just one appointment?

Funny Kit for the Referee team, they have their names and the Flag of their country inscribed on the back of their Kit.

    1. I didn’t get to watch this game, how did Pacifique (last name omitted ;) ) do? I’ve never watched him before.

    2. He was actually okay, very early but wrong Yellow card, and hard to use VAR to issue a straight Red card for SFP after initially issuing a yellow, stayed in the background most of the game and it was a brave decision to issue a Red card

  6. OT

Very controversial OFR in Polish SuperCup today. Goal disallowed for holding in the APP. What do you think?

Referee: Damian Sylwestrzak (29yo, this year's UEFA CORE attendee)
VAR: Tomasz Musiał (UEFA 3rd Category)

    1. Easy to answer: foul should have been whistled only by referee, in case. The trailing leg hits opponent, but once played on, never VAR stuff. Clear mistake by VAR Tomasz Musiał.

      Delete
    2. Why complicate your life? Easy foul on the field of play. The referee put VAR in a difficult position.

      Delete
    3. IMO if the referee had called a foul from the beginning, I would understand. But I think that the VAR should not intervene in this type of play, it is not an obvious error. In fact, the referee takes a long time to make the decision, because he is not clear about it.

      Delete
    4. IMO it's actually a quite clear foul. The defender is in the better position and the attacker retakes the ball illegally, as he holds the defender and causes a quite clear contact with his trailing leg on the defender's foot.
The VAR (non-)intervention should depend on the on-field perception. When the referee assessed the duel as normal amount of physical play, I would agree that it isn't VAR material, but when the pictures differ from his impression (e. g. ball played and no trailing leg contact), an OFR would be justified for me.

    5. VAR should always stay out of these types of situations. IMO, it's not enough for a foul anyway

      Delete
    6. I find those calls really hard, if there is a soft foul and the defender decides to stop playing. Reminds me a bit of this situation RB vs. PSG (Kuipers): https://staging.streamable.com/ntfkxe

    7. WTF? How is that a foul?

  7. is not intervention by VAR, should have kept silent
But is it so difficult to understand? you who are at the var ask yourself the question: is it a clear and obvious error? YES/NO

    3. I think it is a good idea to try things out. Throw in with leg is long wanted change by many, and five substitutions proved to be a good change. As for stopping time, I am sceptical. Lets just hope this potential change wont be lead by Perez and broadcasting companies.

      Delete
    4. Nice to see different views :)

I think that throw-in with leg is a bad idea, it will change the character of play too much (many breaks for de facto free kick; weaker teams will excessively use it as chance for cross and heading the ball from whatever position). And I always supported stopping time. No more controversies with additional time, simply fair to all teams, no subjectivity anymore!

      Delete
    5. My opinions on that:
      1) Shorter matches: Worth a try. If the same action is condensed to less time, it would be a good thing. If it means, less action happening over the total game, I would not like it.
      2) Stop the clock: Would counter the effect from 1), as matches probably would still take 90 minutes. Furthermore I don't see a big problem with the current solution, that has worked for many years. Just give the referees good guidelines for determining the added time. A change would also mean you need an additional timekeeper in every amateur match, which could be a problem.
      3) Unlimited substitutions: Should only be done combined with "flying" substitutions, i.e., don't stop the game for every change. Otherwise there would be too many interruptions. It also favours the teams with more squad depth, so could make leagues even more one-sided.
      4) Sin bins: I like that idea, but would prefer it as a punishment between YC and RC.
      5) If it's done by foot, it should be limited to low passes, maybe together with a maximum distance. But also here, I don't see the requirement for a change.

    6. I do support 2x 30min 'clean playing time'.

I refer to Getafe vs Ajax on 20/02/2020:
      https://twitter.com/OptaJohan/status/1230584917945438212
42:36 - The ball was in play for just 42 minutes & 36 seconds during Getafe - Ajax, the second-shortest amount of time in a Europa League game (since 2009). Patience.

when a team is leading, a goal kick takes 30 - 45 seconds, a throw-in takes minimum 20 seconds, injury times much more than the addtional time at the end of 1st/2nd half, if the ball is out beyond the goal line and running to the corner flagpost, the goalkeeper is walking to the corner flagpost despite the ball boys, goal cheering takes dozens of seconds, etc.
If you compare many statistics in domestic leagues and tournaments, the average of 'clean playing time' is 50-55 minutes.

      Delete
    7. But for some of those points the (easier?) solution could be
      a) there is a maximum time for a set piece execution (starting when everything is ready), e.g. 6 seconds to align it with the existing GK rule - similar to the Futsal laws.
      b) the existing 6 seconds rule is strictly followed - and punished
      c) if getting ready for a restart / set piece takes longer than usual, time is added on for that (include kick offs after goal here). Like b), this point already exists on paper, but could be enforced more.

IMO, this would solve big parts of the problem without changing the game too much.

    https://www.telegraf.rs/sport/fudbal/3365620-najteza-var-odluka-u-srbiji-do-sada-sudiji-minakovicu-ponovili-snimak-22-puta

Very bizzare IMO, the referee watched it 22 times until he was able to convince himself that this was punishable, which for me is very dubious decision.

    Your opinion?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No VAR intervention, not even a foul for me. A referee with stronger personality would stick with his decision on the pitch - play on.

    2. Var was introduced two days ago in Serbia. Yesterday we had first OFR, and it was rather interesting situation. Referee pundit Zdravko Jokic (former UEFA referee observer) said that the referee made the wrong decision by giving the PK. Here is the video: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRcD3jpIhhu/?utm_medium=copy_link

      Delete
    3. No judging, of course. It is a big change for sure for the referees. But it seems they will have to improve or VAR could have a bad reputation in public.

      Delete
    4. IMO the first scene (posted by Forlan) is, no matter if the VAR project started two days or three years before, quite a big mistake. Both players go to the ball and the white player certainly plays the ball, while the red player puts his foot due to his unavoidable movement in front of the defender. The contact is totally accidental, no penalty for me.

Regarding the second incident (posted by ASReferee), I actually see a penalty here. The defender jumps towards the ball and has his arm outstreched in a 90° angle; I wouldn't say that the movement justifies the position of the arm. I would question the VAR intervention (clearness?), but if it's whistled immediately, I would not like a VAR intervention as well to overturn an original PK call. I wonder why Jokic assessed it as (totally?) wrong..

The list of FIFA referees erop Belgium (name - category - age):
      Visser - 1cat - 31 years
      Boucaut - 2cat - 40 years
      Lambrechts - 2cat - 36 years
      Lardot - 2cat - 37 years
      Laforge - 3cat - 34 years
      Van Driessche - 3cat - 36 years
      Verboomen - 3cat - 33 years

I especially think that Visser, Van Driessche and Verboomen are the talents for Belgium as a referee.

Goal for 2:0, wrongly flagged offside, luckily Zebec waited for the goal to be scored and in communication with his team changed the decision because the pass was made by defender, which was maybe hard to spot for AR in the crowd.

65' second YC fully correct, reckless challenge, looks like a step on foot.
72' Fully correct RC, studs up, opponent was just lucky that contact was soft, I guess, otherwise it could have caused a very serious injury, I must praise referee because this was not easy to see and most of referees would have issued YC.
74' impossible to maka a detailed assessment without a closer replay, my opinion is that the call is extremely soft if not wrong, to be honest, this can be even a simulation, but we can't proof that. Also, I think attacker didn't have any chance to reach ball, even without being fouled, so maybe at maximum only penalty but no card...

      Delete
    2. Chefren, thanks for the assessment. I guess, on 74' the YC was issued for arguing with the referee.

      Delete
    3. You are right, the card seems to be shown after some protests, I missed this particular, so this makes the decision about second sending off absolutely correct, and we should discuss only about penalty call, but no card is definitely OK! I would say remarkable performance in a quite challenging game.

    4. When you already give 2 RC to one team, giving the 3rd for dissent is a bit harsh and maybe even stupid because you draw much attention to you (everyone will see 3 RC), but overall all decisions correct or supportable and it must be a very good grade for Matyunin given the challenge.
