The deadline for the final will be Friday 9 July 2021, 09:59 AM CET. Unless extraordinary announcement by UEFA a few time before, in that case of course we couldn't accept your names. So the suggestion is not to wait the very last minutes to avoid troubles. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted in any case.
Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:
10 points for having guessed the exact referee 8 points for having guessed the exact VAR
5 points if the guessed referee will be appointed as fourth official
4 points for having guessed the VAR appointed in the game but he is appointed as AVAR1 or AVAR3

DeleteWe all know Kuipers will be the referee. The more interesting question is who the VAR will be. I'm not sure how a Van Boekel appointment would look, given that he played a key role in the Sterling PK. This is always the risk appointing the same referees to SF and F of a competition. Despite Blom's mistake in ITA-TUR, it probably would have looked better optics-wise if he was with Makkelie for the SF.

I think UEFA has a little problem now. They took the risk to appoint only German and Dutch referees for the last 5 matches (if rumours are true) of the tournament and a total of 8 out of 15 KO matches. Appointing a Dutch referee to a SF and the final was a risk.
ReplyDeleteNormally, I would say you cannot appoint a Durch referee in the next English game but I don't think Kuipers is in big danger.
But I think they will change the VAR of the final, although Van Boekel's non-intervention may be supported by Rosetti, there is too much media. I think Kuipers can speak German (he lives 10 kilometres away from German border), so a German VAR team should be no big problem.
As 4th official I see Felix Brych because there was very good media for his performance in ITA-ESP and UEFA has to show with the final appointment that they appoint the best that they have after the controversary today. So if Vincic was planned as 4th, I'm sorry for him if Brych will be appointed.

DeletePretty clear that kuipers get the final. But after tonight, i am not sure about the dutchmen. A joker, Will be brych... But the way UEFA performs and select the Referee team, i wont be surprissed if they go to the nearest pub and pick the VAR, it wont matter because they dont use them..

It's been five years since I refereed the last European Championship semi-final between Portugal and Wales.
Although I was happy and proud when I went out to the match, there was a deep disappointment with me and my colleagues: why were we not allowed to judge the final?
People often ask: how do you get selected for the last matches? Are they achievements? How do you rank judges? Is it the one who makes the fewest mistakes? Who really makes the assessment?
The truth is that it is a dark mourning.
A dirty, political and false world where friendship corruption, loyalty and nationality play a role. Football that talks about fair play and respect, where the rulebook is the same for everyone, where the four best teams that have won the most matches will play the semi-finals in London tonight and tomorrow - but when it comes to refereeing, it happens in closed rooms, with political agendas and with everything but the best of football in mind.
Those who are selected, and he will be selected for the final (He hasn't revealed about who he means) , are NOT automatically the tournament's three best judges. It is not always those who have performed best, received the highest rating or delivered at the top who gain the trust.
This time, the tournament's best referee, (Cuneyt Cakir from Turkey who he means. Clearly says it in the comments) without a single clear mistake, has already been sent home. The decision was made by UEFA's top management and has nothing to do with performances during the European Championships.
Other judges, who without knowing it themselves, have the right contacts, best political backing or come from important countries gets to judge further.
Regardless, congratulations to the judges who judge! No shadow should fall over them.
What everyone should know, however, is that it is a rotten world with a far from good culture and that I, with perspective, can say that I am damn happy that I stopped judging three years ago."

DeleteNo choice but to agree with Jonas. Management of the referees is very, very unjust, especially at big tournaments.

- Rizzoli favoured by Collina so much that he gave him CL and WC finals (both with bad referee's performance) although his disciplinary control was never good; Rizzoli's strength was being politically correct though, keeping both eyes closed to clear SFPs, violent conducts, penalty incidents; such cynical and coward attitude was well-received by Collina and is well-received by Rosetti too (or maybe by those above them) - they still can't understand that mandatory cards and penalties are not given by the referees, they are earned by players!
- WC2018: Faghani deserved the final but was given only 3rd place game (I guess mainly due to nationality...)
- EURO2020: appointing Brych again after BELPOR and not appointing Çakır after CROESP was simply scandalous and anybody with elementary sense of justice should be able to say that
Especially the following phrase is an excellent summary of what is refereeing at the highest level:

And we can only agree - there is no transparency so much that there are no official statements about big key match incidents, no official statements about (lack of) VAR intervention.
UEFA/FIFA and UEFA/FIFA Referees Committee don't care about football world. It's only empty slogan repeated by big bosses, as well as fair-play and respect. Were Çakır / Mateu Lahoz / Hațegan / Kovács respected or rather abused? Was appointing Brych again after BELPOR fair to other referees?
Finally, what is the benefit of keeping everything refereeing-related so secret. I don't mean that Rosetti should come to media and discuss decisions with journalists but why not to publish official analysis / insight view of decision making process after controversial incidents in big tournaments?
It's simple meritocracy and transparency in refereeing that would help the so-called football world...

#RAYHD I agree with 95% of your content, but not with your strong words. Every manager on this planet - in profit companies - now that ambiguity needs to be tolerated in an executive role. We are not speaking about referee developers, but managers. Managers need to weigh up and process interests of multiple stakeholders. So the belief that always performance counts is a beautiful one, reality is different. I regret it like you do.
DeleteThe 5% difference is that Faghani not only not refereed final because of nationality but also because the r16 got slightly out of his hands and was close to deesclatation at the end. The other point is that appointments should also reflect the ability to handle the next game, not always judging only the last game. Thats a fine line with fairness no doubt, but I would better trust a top surgeon to operate a heart problem who did a great job with difficult diseases 99 times out of 100, rather than choosing an ok or a good surgeon who was each time perfect in easier circumstances. The same cannot be said for Cakir, thats a particular case, and unfair one.
Otherwise consensus.

However, I can say sth about the final appointment. I basically agree with everyone that it will be Kuipers, Brych as F/O, and Dankert as VAR (not Fritz, who seems only favoured by Brych?).
To be honest I would expect the VOR lineup to be sth like Dankert, Fritz, Prieto, Martínez Munuera - would appease RFEF after no KO stage appointments for them.
I don't think for a second it will come to pass, but what if Italy reject Kuipers now?
There are only four referees in London, with eg. Çakır and now Karasëv at home. With COVID rules, I don't think any discharged referees will be allowed to return.
It would be a straight choice between Brych and Hațegan. However, Kuipers is waaaaay more high profile than "the Dutch referee at this tournament", so I think UEFA will be 100% okay with their plan to give the final to him.

In my opinion van Boekel doesn't have any responsibility there, he just applied what Rosetti has been asking during whole tournament. So in case of appointment for Kuipers, he should be confirmed. Changing him would be only opportunity's choice and also a signal against the committee.

ReplyDeleteEuropean refereeing has many problems, but the appointments of the top referees are just the tip of the iceberg, or a mirror that shows how problematic this universe of referee appointments is. The mistakes made in the appointments of top level referees such as makkeile, cakir, kuipers lahoz, turpin, hategan, brych etc, nepotism, and the disruptions that everyone sees are just a clue that shows how dark this business is.
The main disaster takes place in sub-categories. It is not very important that a top-level referee gets a few matches missing or more, but what happened in these appointments, which attracts everyone's attention and is followed, can make us imagine in a negative way what happened in the sub-category referee assignments and evaluations, which no one followed. It is scandalous that 3 out of 4 referees are sent home even if they make similar mistakes, while the fourth continues to be assigned to the most important matches. We see that the worst refereeing performance in the second round blew the whistle in the quarter and semi-finals, but the best referee was not given a match.
So, do we know how the referees in the sub-categories are promoted, what criteria are applied there, whether the performance or the lobby or the country federation is effective? After what we have seen in this tournament, who can say with peace of mind that objective criteria are applied in the appointment and promotion of the referees in the sub-categories? Who can trust that a committee that acted so irresponsibly in public events, openly patronizing and unaccountable, acted responsibly in the referee evaluation of the UEFA Conference League qualifying match?
I think Collina was a great chance to refereeing in Europe, his charisma, personality and leadership minimized outside influence. However, in the new era dominated by the ceferin-rosetti duo, we see and will continue to see that only large and powerful federations, friendship and nepotism are effective. I think the effects of this are visible today, but the real danger awaits us in the future of refereeing. because the current top level referees who were trained in the past will not be around in a few years time. Instead of them, nationality, strong federation, friendship relations, referees with strong lobby are coming and will come. For this reason, I think VAR should be used more effectively as soon as possible. mediocrity on the field can only be compensated by the increased use of VAR.
Collina isn't perfect either, see favouritism of Rizzoli and not appointing Faghani to final at WC2018.
Deletei agree with you on the appointments for this tournament and i, like you, was not that happy with them. whilst in group stage and in R16 we all thought that it followed a "performance principle", we got taught a lot better in QF, SF and now on sunday in the final.

I stick to Kuipers - they won't change that appointment due to yesterday's events.
ReplyDeleteBut they were usually very strict with VAR changes after mistakes (e. g. Blom or Hernandez Hernandez), so I cannot believe that they appoint Pol von Boekel as VAR for the grand final. Think of the anger and the "MATCH FIXING" reproaches in the Media world - I think that this is too risky for them. When Kuipers speaks at least a bit German, Dankert would be the most sensible choice, so my predcition is:

Well now we have exactly what I thought could be a problem after it was clear that Makkelie would get a SF and Kuipers the final. Blom was obviously out as VAR after the first match and van Boekel should be out after this as well. Regardless of whether UEFA considers the non-intervention to be correct or not, there is way too much pressure/attention on van Boekel after yesterdays incident.

I would say that I think he didn’t deserve a place in the EUROs, but he has proven himself and I can definitely see him make a comeback.

DeleteAs there are some uncertainties regarding retirements / availabilty with no more fixed age limits (e.g. Brych, Cakir, Pitana, Loustau, Shukralla), I find it difficult to make an own list.
Good remark also regarding Skomina and Marciniak. I think, there are also names in other confederation with a lot of experience, who are still around at their continent's top level and probably need to be considered: E.g. Alioum, Gassama, Sikazwe, Pitti, Montero, Roldan.
Will be an interesting selection anyway. Unfortunately, without youth WCs or Confed Cup to test the candidates this time. Only the Olympics for some of them (mostly those with outside chances).

But you can see that both players continue to play. Maybe the referee was distracted for a moment because he was thinking about whether to stop or not. But he was well positioned. You can definitely see the contact between the knee and the calf, but Sterling goes into this duel with the intention of a possible penalty kick. You can see that he moves his body forward. He wants to get that one - he wants to cheat that one a bit, as they say. You can also see how he pulls his leg up again and bends it a bit. And referees see the whole movement and are often guided by the fall. But because of the pattern of the fall, you can actually see here that that is not enough for a penalty.
It's contact - and that's UEFA's line at this tournament: if there's contact, it's the decision of the referee on the field. That's why it can't be overruled. That's why the penalty was upheld. Of course, you can also award it theoretically, it's not totally wrong now, but I personally don't think it's right. Playing on would have been the right solution, because it fits in with the tournament. Because it also fitted in with Danny's whole line, for example in the first half, when he often let the game go on. He had many small scenes with a bit of contact and always let it go on - and that's part of it in such games. That's why the penalty at the end is a bit too harsh for me.”
Per Mertesacker then basically asked why Makkelie awarded a penalty instantly and didn't wait for VAR after such a small contact (it's nonsense what he's saying but just for context).
Gräfe: “That's called experience. We have always seen the same referees internationally in the last four or five years. You can see that Brych, Kuipers and Lahoz were always there. Internationally, we have had to suffer a small drop in quality. But this is the first big tournament for him, he is also a huge talent, but he has not yet refereed a EURO, a World Cup - and now a semi-final. The first big game. And you might got to learn it the hard way. He might have been influenced a bit - Wembley, home game, spectators, atmosphere. Maybe that makes a small difference for a referee who is not yet that experienced in such an important match ... He should have stayed cool like he did in the first game of this European Championship. He didn't whistle one or two penalties for Italy and in Rome he virtually stood up to Italy and showed strength, which I would have liked to see here as well.”

Secondly, I am afraid, he mentions the experience factor mostly, because it support his own agenda (claiming, he should have been allowed to continue in Bundesliga). There still might be something true to it though.
Yeah I agree, Philipp. I was quite surprised that he didn’t even say anything about Mertesacker’s nonsense… and yeah, the experience part surely is something he mentioned because of himself, although I still think at least some parts are valid.
DeleteOT: In general, I’m a bit unhappy how this whole Gräfe situation was pushed by himself and media. At the beginning of this debate I thought it was okay and it's reasonable to talk about abolishing the age limit but towards the end it became really unbelievable for me. I don't know if you have seen the ZEIT interview, but what he says there is just disrespectful and arrogant imo...
Forgive me for digressing slightly but last nights penalty award, the non-use of VAR afterwards, the fact that England's semi final opponents had to travel 2500 miles to the match, six of England's seven matches at Wembley (including the England-Germany match which was originally supposed to be played in Dublin but given to London instead) are all, shall we say, very beneficial to one country in UEFA in what is supposed to be a tournament played across the continent.

It will be very interesting to see how his career progresses as I cannot understand UEFA's fascination with Dutch referees.
Ohhh @RobertW : I fully agree with your thoughts. Objectively written down as well. However, what you do not yet understand : Makkelie will NOT AT ALL be "punished" (like Cakir apparently was) by Uefa Ref Committee : Roberto and his small team have their eternal favourites and unless a veto of Aleksander Cefering (eg. Cakir), they will always continue to designate the same small bunch of their preferred referees. Signore Roberto is probably a serious man, but there is no room for meritocracy in UEFA elite (and 1ste cat.) refereeing. It is a pity, but that also happens in real life, much mure than we might think. Conclusion : Danny Desmond M. from Dordrecht will continue to have the the top clashes, even in 2021... I am not angry ; I just try to analyse (which I am doing since the start at European level of Frank De Bleeckere). Danny Desmond is just lucky that it is "just" a small country like Denmark, who has been punished by his wrong PK decision. If it had been England, things might have ended differently

DeleteI don't like the idea of referees being "punished" after comitting a crucial mistake. Everyone makes mistakes occasionally. If you make more mistakes than other referees, of course those other referees should get the better games; not as a punishment, but simply because they are better.
DeleteI think, Makkelie is still a very good referee, as he also showed in most of yesterday's match. The only problem for Makkelie is the outcry from the public and that his name might be forever connected with a pretty awful decision. By the way, I am convinced that this last point would be significantly less severe if the game had been without VAR.
Some Spanish medias reported that Del Cerro could be potential fourth official at the final.
ReplyDeleteRumours say that it will be Makkelie as head referee and Kuipers as 4th official, given the outstanding performance of Danny at this tournament : his cool is very much appreciated by Roberto and H. Dallas. Batta preferred by accident Turpin, but the latter is still celebrating his EL final and Turkey has no member within Committee. And do not forget Jaap U., who is very for a very long time (before De Bleeckere already) influencing as regards the two Dutchies (by coincidence of course).
DeleteSome Italian newspaper reporting Cakir as favorite for the final on Sunday. Maybe they don't know that he is already at home.
ReplyDeleteUEFA did not even give a match to Cakir in the Champions League after KO16 for two years (2019/2020 and 2020/2021). That's why UEFA never gives a task in the Final. We know that it's not about performance. For Ceferin and the puppet Rosetti, the performance doesn't matter. Subject: Ceferin's design of UEFA according to himself.
