DeleteTonight's game has Neymar vs. Messi. As always in Brazil vs. Argentina, this will be a great test for Ostojich.
ReplyDeleteAs for WC 2002, I believe Claus and Rappalini are ahead of the pack. Roldan and Tobar should be there as well.
How about Loustau in WC 2022? Also it will be Roldan 3rd WC if he is selected next year
DeleteLostau has also done great this season. But he will be 47. Simon from Brazil did WC 2002, 2006 and 2010 due to lack of new talent. So Roldan would not be the first one. He is still on the top of his game.
DeleteCONMEBOL together with the associations have already made their choices of who their candidates are, and this will not change unless the chosen performances are very bad. So forget about names like Pitana, Loustau, Roldan, Cunha (this one could still go as VAR), because they won't be in Qatar.
DeleteBusacca warned CONMEBOL right after the 2018 World Cup that he would not accept Roldan in another World Cup, as he had two opportunities and we all know how his performance was, so he is not even considered for 2022, the candidate from Colombia is Andrés Rojas.

DeleteIf what Najaah Wisaal is true, it should be the first ever for me to agree with Busacca. Impossible to see again Roldan, said with all respect, after all he did in both previous editions... but yes, it seems that there aren't so many alternatives as well.
DeleteArgentina: Rapallini and Tello. Pitana is not considered, just you guys watching his recent matches and you know why, and Loustau that are more political issues of CONMEBOL that doesn't like him very much. Yes, he made the final of the last Libertadores, but it was more by vetoes and backstage moves, than CONMEBOL's own will.
DeleteBolivia: Vargas, no chance.
Brazil: Claus, Sampaio, It's still an open dispute, CBF prefers Sampaio, CONMEBOL prefers Claus, so at the moment Claus would have the preference.
Chile: Tobar, place practically guaranteed.
Colombia: Rojas, he's going to compete, but I don't think he'll get more than the spot as a reserve. Roldan is discarded due to the situation reported above.
Ecuador: Guerrero, no chance.
Paraguay: this is a big unknown, the candidate has changed a few times, Aquino, Benitez and now it's Mendez, but no matter who it is, none of them have a chance.
Peru: Ortega, very few chances. Peru would have stronger candidates in Carrillo and Haro, but both declined to participate in the process for personal reasons.
Uruguay: Ostojich, Gonzalez. It's the other dispute still open, although it looks like Ostojich has opened up a good lead, but Gonzalez still disputes. Andres Cunha is out by option of CONMEBOL, there were some problems behind the scenes, but he is managing to resolve himself and could go as VAR.
Venezuela: Valenzuela. At first it would be Herrera, but in the last two years, Valenzuela has won the place with good performances.

Furthermore there is impossible to see such an early RC with a borderline foul nowadays (+ common sense ?)

ReplyDelete30' One of many perfect moments to slow the game down, issue a YC for SPA (or at least a strong warning), and try and calm things. Instead a belated free kick taken 10m ahead of where it should have been. It's been the little technical things and overall management of the game which could have been better so far

ReplyDeleteThe game settled after the early stages of the half, making life easier for Ostojich. An early YC correct for Fred, followed by many fouls where play could have been slowed for strong warnings, that weren't given. Personally, I feel this style of match either requires a very calm referee, or a very strong offical, whereas Ostojich has seemed a little frustrated and chaotic, and has not really had a consistant line. Dissent has also been accepted, which hasn't helped the overall impression. Highlight of the half was an excellent ONside by AR2 for the goal. Overall, a satisfactory half but with many points for improvement (for me)

DeleteIn contrast to many UEFA referees (ie Brych’s semifinal for one of many examples), Ostojich has given our many correct yellow cards today instead of ignoring offenses by trying to “manage” them and talk his way through them. I definitely prefer this style of refereeing, personally.
ReplyDeleteThe difference for me is that in that semi-final, Brych could manage the game without losing acceptance or having things boil over. I'm not sure what Ostojich could do in this one other than show cautions. But I agree, nice to see him show the manadatory YCs in this second half
DeleteYou really can’t compare the two, in UEFA it’s possible to “manage” without the game turning into a fight and card festival, if you ignore yellow cards here you end up with a minimum of 3 red cards
DeleteI agree with you jleekens, in CONMEBOL that sort of strategy would never be possible. Still, I think this is a positive point for Ostojich. The game is more difficult, he can’t hide behind “management” skills and players that are willing to be nice to each other no matter what. He’s had to be on his game and get all the calls correct and he has. Very alert performance so far in a game with a high degree of difficulty and many decisions to make.
DeleteAnd I agree with you on that: I prefer games where management is possible but Ostojich just can’t do that. Therefore I have a lot of respect for CONMEBOL referees, they probably get the toughest international games to manage out of all confederations
DeleteMy one clear criticism of Ostojich’s performance is his signalling, sometimes it hasn’t been clear what the restart will be or what foul he is calling.

What's even worse is that he continuously threatened the Argentina players with adding more time if they continue to time waste. All talk and no action. In other words, "modern refereeing".
DeleteFor the first 35mins of the second half, much better by Ostojich. He could stay in the background whilst issuing cautions, generally for SPA. Unfortunately, when things did boil over in the final ten minutes, no preventative or proactive measures were taken to reduce the liklihood of pushing/shoving happening again. In fairness, there have been so many instances of players falling over and rolling round in agony, the game has been near impossible to officiate. It is a shame for the game that those who play in Europe without the theatrics, feel it necessary to do in a major final. It seemed that Ostojich generally had acceptance and respect from the players throughout, but better soft-skills could have prevented incidents towards the end, or could have made it clear that exaggerating contact would not be tolerated. The highlight of the team was AR2, with three excellent off/onside decisions. Although many things that could have been done differently, I see no reason why the referee will be in conversations after the match, which Conmebol should see as a success

DeleteHeber Lopes IMO has been the only referee who properly handled a Copa America Final in recent history. He simply obliged each and every player who earned a card with the proper card. He didn't step onto to pitch to babysit and coddle the players with pointless chats and gestures. He step on and off the pitch as the referee.

ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Lopes gets any praise for this performance. Sure the SYC was correct and I don't really blame him for the (more wrong than right) SFP call, but this was a total refereeing disaster.
DeleteTwo crystal clear RCs missed, no clear disciplinary plan (he had the nerve to issue two RCs, but he was-not-strict-at-all!(!)), ridiculous leadership style. Watch the procedure resulting in the YC to Messi... just amateurish.
I want to like Lopes, he has an amazing story about refereeing in favelas(?) under remarkable personal pressure, and sported a very unique style; but unfortunately he was no Mateu or Frisk.
Larrionda, Loustau, (I'd argue Byron Moreno), these guys were serious law-enforcers from South America - not Heber Lopes.

DeleteIf you want to talk about a disastrous Final performance. We can talk about 2010 World Cup Final. But, that referee IS from the "right" part of the world. And as such is devoid from any responsibility and some very deserved criticism.
