And now.. what about the future, Björn?
A special post dedicated to Björn Kuipers after EURO 2020 final.
The referee from Oldenzaal had planned to retire after this tournament, but we never know what is about to happen. Let's congratulate him aftter today's performance, at first!
I think that Kuipers vindicated his selection for the game. A top class performance from a top class referee.
With regards to the potential RC, I see it as a typical example of an 'orange card'. A room full of referees would never agree unanimously on it and frankly I think most would show yc in real time as you don't see the extent of the challenge until you see the slow motion replay. His foot slips off the ball and into the thigh, yc for me is supportable, and I believe a rc would be supported if given too. Any talk of clear RC missed or definitely only a yellow here imo is wrong, it's a typical example of why the laws of football are so ambiguous, it allows for interpretation and in this instance I agreed with kuipers interpretation.
Finally, if this is the end its a fitting final game for a superb referee, yet I would be delighted to see him in Qatar
Without age limits, the new UEFA categories will be really interesting regarding retirements of Elite referees. Not only Kuipers, but also Brych, Mateu and Cakir are candidates for that. Del Cerro Grande and Orsato probably will continue until the WC, although being in the same category. And then there is Skomina, who deserves a better end of the career, but has gotten some competition from his own country.
With age limits gone. Why should any referee retire? Just look at how well "mature" referees perform in the English Premier League. I say keep going and pushing it until the wheels fall off.
Well done CONMEBOL and UEFA respectively. I applaud you both as Confederation's Now on to the CONCACAF Gold Cup. To rot our referee IQ watching the "Brian Hall way".
No problem. I will no longer compliment senior referees in the EPL. Nor will I advocate for the equal treatment of referees who happen to be a bit older.
In regards to CONCACAF. I believe that what I've said is quite tame and on point. Minute 65 Canada vs Martinique just gave us yet another glaring example of CONCACAF failure. It's kinda hard if not impossible to vent when things are so bad.
Deep bow for Björn Kuipers and his team. Enjoyed this final because of him, since the football itself wasn't of that high standard. My gut feeling is that he will retire from international football when achieving this level in this final.
The only thing that is bigger than this is the WC Final. That is 1,5 years ahead. He extended his career already for this EURO. So my guess is that he will retire.
Somewhere at the blog I saw a post of Kuipers succeeding Rosetti. Don't now the intention but since Kuipers has two supermarkets, as 3rd generation in the family, so I don't see him stepping in a high role at UEFA. Maybe at national level in the coaching staff of the referees.
At least he can look back on a very succesfull career. Much more than, the kid who knew better than the referees he came across and discussed with as a youth player, he probably expected.

He’s done what he had to do, with just about every final possible. Sure, the WC is a year away, but given that there will most likely not be more than one referee from the Netherlands, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were pressure for him to retire so Makkelie can be sent. And it makes sense! I find UEFA tends to have a small group of ‘super elite’ referees who are trusted for the most important matches. And now Kuipers is at the end, Brych, Skomina, Orsato are over 45, Lahoz is 44, and Cakir is not in favour (and also 44). So who are the next top referees in Europe? Taylor’s arguably one of them, but who else? Makkelie has got to establish himself at the top (and a EURO semi would suggest he’s there already), and Kuipers might need to step aside for that. Also to watch, how EURO performances affect lower-ranked referees. Will Ekberg get his promotion, being one of a few Group 1 at the Euro? Or did performances not convince? What about Siebert? Will Dankert, VAR extraordinaire but in Group 2? And, looking beyond categories, will we see more women in UCL, UEL, UEFA Conference League? With a third league, it should be very feasible to offer training opportunities to women beyond Frappart-Monzul. It’s all very good to have a few elite women referees in UCL, but it should be possible to integrate women more routinely into matches normally referees by Group 1-2 referees as well. Otherwise, we’ll remain in a situation where only one or two exceptional talents shine at the top, with no effect on the pyramid as a whole.
Hategan maybe, but we have to look in the next 1-2 years, as nearly all the veteran big names are gone or will leave probably within a year. Taylor and Makkelie, sure. Oliver I'm less convinced, but maybe UEFA trusts him? Turpin, well he had a bad Euro. He had the benefit of France crashing out early and still was sent home. Will that last? Siebert is not yet in Elite, so that's a few years out before he becomes the 'go-to' referee. Hategan, maybe, but he needs a stable team. And Vincic, possibly. All that to say, as I was thinking, that if Makkelie is going to take over as one of Europe's top referees, Kuipers might need to take a back seat, just like Webb did to let Atkinson and Clatts shine, or Wolfgang Stark and Brych, etc.
I’m English. I have full respect for Bjorn Kuipers and he is one of the best referees of all time, he also managed the game last night superbly. However, and maybe this is me being biased, I believe he missed a clear red card on Jorginho (not that important considering time of game and he missed a penalty) but also a foul by Bonucci on Sterling at a crucial point in the game (early in 2nd half, England 1-0) ahead. I thought initially Sterling went down after minimal contact by Chiellini on his arm but the replay showed Bonucci’s knee colliding with Sterling which caused him to fall and prevented him from shooting. This in my opinion is a penalty and var should have interfered, but congratulations Kuipers on a great career
Kuipers has made a comment that articles stating that he had a great farewell are premature: he hasn’t decided to stop yet and wants to think about it, as he doesn’t want to rush this decision, which he would find unfair to Van Roekel and Zeinstra. He also added that he wants to discuss with his family, as he is away from home quite often which is tough on all of them, so they will likely be a part of the decision as well.
He doesn’t know yet if the fact that every nationality can only have one referee at the World Cup is part of his decision. This means that it is likely that KNVB (who have honored him and his assistants) and UEFA are willing to continue internationally with Kuipers

Physically, I think it's a bad idea if Kuipers continue. I admire Kuipers but he should let act the New generation (with Makkelie) With Euro 2020 Final, it's an excellent way to end his career and be in history. And for his family, in "Man in the middle" he already says that he's not enough with his family. Family is the most important thing.
Hello, I have a question if anyone knows the answer here, how many cards were shown to coaches/team staff during the EURO tournament? I am aware of a yellow card for a Polish staff member in the POL-SWE match, were there any other instances during the tournament?

IMO, if Kuipers would end his refereeing career, he will succeed Uilenberg within UEFA.

I think if this is to be his final international appearance he's done himself and his fellow colleagues proud.
