    1. It is crystal clear that political issues effect on appointments. This is very disappointing for all of the referees in the tournament without discussing a specific name.

It clearly shows that even if they perform well, they may not be appointed to the big games because of such issues. I think this issue is not representing the ''fair play'' motto that UEFA supports. The game MUST be fair for the referees, too.

  3. We could easily say sensible appointment, if Brych wouldn't be involved in ENG-UKR. Honestly I don't really get it if he was planned for SF, why they didn't give the England game to del Cerro Grande or Karasev, Hategan or Makkelie.
Now we should clearly expect Cakir in the other SF and then a full Dutch team in the final. (Even though I would love to see Cakir in the final based on his performance on this tournament.)
But in we can remember from a World Cup where Irmatov got 5 assignments, so it's not unusual, but weird management in this case. Anyhow good luck to Felix Brych and his team!

  5. Arguments for this appointment:
    - Lack of alternatives: Makkelie with a mistake against ITA in the opening match + maybe a conflict with a Kuipers appointment in Wembley; Cakir had ESP in R16 and problems with this pairing at the last EURO; Orsato and Taylor not possible due to the teams; everybody else a "too small name" for such a match
    - Brych didn't have any crucial mistake IIRC no VAR intervention besides offside in this tournament
    - Maybe UEFA felt that Brych deserved the final in the big picture (either considering BEL-POR as not that bad or not that relevant) as much as Kuipers, but as they can only choose one, he gets 3 KO matches as consolation

    1. I don’t agree. If he was planned for ESP-ITA then why did he get the QF game on last day? IMO this appointment was last minute change.

      Delete
    2. Which of the three arguments is wrong in your opinion? All of them?
I just tried to find reasons, why UEFA has decided the way they did. Of course there are also arguments against it.

And the QF appointment is indeed questionable.
      Possible explanations:
      - They wanted to test both Brych and Kuipers to then decide who gets the final - and maybe the other one was always planned to get the first (and somehow bigger) SF.
      - They weren't convinced by the alternatives for UKR-ENG and felt Brych would be the smallest risk.

      Delete
    3. 1st of all Cakir’s game was in 2016. I don’t think both teams will not even care about it. Makkelie had problem at opening but Italy won that game and Kevin Blom was affected after that game. So both options are much better than Brych (who has QF game 3 days before than SF).
If Brych didn’t get QF, i would be totally OK with this appointment.

      Delete
    4. I fully agree with your argomenta Philipp. I guess that commettee consider Brych and Kuipers on the exact same level to officiate the final in term of curriculum, performance and merit.
So they Wanted to test both in QF to take final decision. But I'm not sure that Makkelie will be totally ruled out because he has lot of credits in the commeteee

  6. Where are the other Elite referees???

  7. Now i expect kuipers for the other semi final and kuipers / brych for the final. Maybe first half one of them and sezonda half the other one.

    1. I think they will handle the other semifinal with Vincic or Rapallini as FO. VAR Dankert.
Germany monopolizes VAR room from now on because Italy, Spain and England are involved. Only Gil, Blom and Van Boekel are available.

Cakir with Dankert, Gil, Gittelmann and Fritz in ENG-DEN IMO.

  9. It seems as committee has had big troubles in appointing Italy's games at this tournament. Basically, I can understand Brych for a Round of 16 and then this semifinal, but then why Ukraine - England in the middle?
Really no other options? I think the management has been not the best, in addition, after Belgium - Portugal Brych in my opinion wouldn't have deserved more than one game, being honest.
At the end we can discuss as long as you want but for the very big games, we have still only a few names trusted by committee, almost nobody to be honest.

    1. I think EngUkr was a test for Brych if he is able to reflect his mistakes or not

  10. Never see the point of having big groups of referees at these tournaments, with all the meetings and training in the build up, only to give them one game and then use such a small group. Must be really demotivating for other refs. If determined to use certain top refs for the later games, why not give the others more of the group games? Some of Brych’s games could have gone to other elite refs (eg Kovacs) to at least give experience?

This strikes me as unplanned compromise - surely wouldn’t have optimum QF Sat and SF Tues?

    ReplyDelete
  11. So, initially Brych was not appointed to England-Ukraine, there was a replacement. Perhaps it was Hategan? But why couldn't del Cerro be appointed?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no, Hategan was the 4th official in the quarterfinals at Oliver. I agree with you, something must have gone wrong, but I can't figure it out at the moment. it cannot be that rosetti has planned three knockout games in a row for Brych.

This would mean 100% political influence on committee, very sad, more than disappointing, but it would also explain why not Cakir for big games, why not for BEL - ITA or ITA - ESP. To be honest, if this is the case, I would never accept such conditions and I would leave my position.

    5. The assignments for the final phase of EURO 2020 seem to reflect the standing of the referees during the whole UCL/EL season 2020-21: Those who were fully trusted and appointed excessively now continue to gain the same reputation within UEFA unless they really failed. Cakir neither got many matches nor ones in the final UCL stages - and the same counts for EURO now. Also Karasev and some others "can't" be appointed any more from this point of view.

      Delete
    6. Cakır is out. It is confirmed. Congratulations to UEFA referees committee that show us all decisions are political

      Delete
    7. I totally agree with Chefren. It would be very shocking for everyone if this information is confirmed. Because it will reveal that political relationships and the home countries of the UEFA authorities are taken into consideration without respecting the real referee performance on the field. That will be very diasppointing both for Cakir as he did quite well may be the best in the tournament and the all referee community. From now on, should referees consider the nationalities of the UEFA authorities? Is this the message to the referee community.
At this point, the name of the referee is meaningless it could be Cakir, Brych, Hategan or Orsato. The point is respecting the referees' performance and being fair. However, we can easily see that political relationships come one step forward in referee appointments.

  13. Well I don't know, something is just really odd about this appointment. Why would you have him in a QF on Saturday and a SF on Tuesday? I'm almost certain that one of the two appointments wasn't planned. I think committee also had limited options for Italy-Spain. Makkelie after the penalty situation in the first match, Cakir I think had issues with that exact game EURO 2016, and both Taylor and Orsato are out. You can give it to a "smaller" name but it looks like UEFA doesn't trust them. They only trust a very limited number of referees for top matches... Also as Chefren points out, there always is special and careful treatment when it comes to Italy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Who will get the final if Kuipers gets the other SF and Cakir is out ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why would the other Elite referees try to keep up with the best of their best, when they already know they will never ever get the really big games? It must be damaging to their own trust in their managers and their desire to keep striving. I wouldn't be surprised to see some early european retirements after this tournament.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well Brych and Kuipers are near retirement age so the window to be the next elite of the elite is there for the taking.

      Delete
    2. Well, then why not appoint them already in other knockout matches this tournament? If Brych and Kuipers are the only choices for the big ones, several years in a row, something is wrong. What message does this send to the other referees?

      Delete
  16. So why he refreed yesterday for Eng-Ukr and why Cakir is not chosen for that clash ? I think dani makkle will be a better choice although that will be too much after he took Eng-Ger .

  20. It is evident that the referees that handled a large amount of European games throughout the pandemic have not shown good standards in this Euro. Brych, Kuipers, Turpin, Lahoz etc failed to impress and I fully understand the frustration of many in this blog. Who in fact is making the choices? Is it all about politics and keeping everyone happy? What is the point of taking refs in the Euro that was given only 1 game? I am firm in my opinion, that Rosett has been the most unsuccessfull head of refereeing in Europe in the last 30 years. We must also admit; Rosetti was never a top-class referee. It is very pleasing that the vast majority of the group agrees that the best refs of the tournament so far have been Rapallini, Karasev, Cakir. Belgium-Portugal was by far the worst refereeing performance of the tournament. Croatia-Spain probably the best. I think Cakir will be appointed for the second semi final; Vincic as fourth official; and Kuipers with Makelie for the final.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So, basically we had a situation in which from the start there was more or less clear performance criteria, which was clear in case of Grinfeld, Soares Dias, and Rapallini and Karasev. Lahoz and Turpin were IMO eliminated so easily only because they had their piece of cake earlier this season.

And now Rosetti manages to ruin it all in the end. 3 KO rounds in a row for Brych, and (if confirmed) no Cakir in last 3 rounds, although he was almost brilliant so far.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If Cakir is out (a scandal if true) then why not at least give him ENG-UKR? Would have been an ideal choice and avoided Brych issue?

  27. I would not be surprised if Rapallini gets the second semi final. I can also see Makkelie as a fourth official for the final. However though, I would not write off Taylor in case England gets eliminated. Rosetti is very inconsistent; so it is very hard to get to a conclusion by making logical assumptions. Now I think the other SF will go to Hatagen / Makkelie, and final will go to Kuipers. Again, I feel sorry for Cakir. His kept a very good performance in all of his 3 matches.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I dont get why people repeatedly mention Hategan. He is obviously out, and it obviously has nothing to do with his performance.

Big names had to be satisfied. Makkelie is a great referee, no doubt about that, and he represents everything that committee wants, turning RC to YC whenever possible, thinking how to stay in the background, and at the same being able to control the game.

The problem is that they were just shameless with this appointments, no compromise at all, even for QF where they had the opportunity to at least make it less bitter for everyone by appointing Cakir of Makkelie instead of Brych.

    2. I understand that Brych gets QF as his last game in this EURO, but now this is not the case as he gets SF

  35. Today Cuneyt Cakir told Turkish media that MAKKELIE is appointed for other SF, and the KUIPERS is appointed for the grand final and also he added that he and his crew is going back to Turkey today. What a shame for UEFA and Ceferin.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I remember you that Cakir already whistled 2 World Cup semifinals. Brych and Kuipers don't have a SF/ F in a big tournament.

So, I can't say is such a big tragedy that Cakir won't whistle a semifinal in this tournament. Anyway, his level in last years wasn't so high. Indeed, he made a good EURO 2020 until now (I saw him live in HUN- POR: same style, whistling with a delay of 1-2 seconds), but there are also other referees on the planet, not only Cakir.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry if we only argue about performance, Cakir is the best in this EURO. This is WHY he should get SF or even F. No doubt on this. It must be some reasons that is not related to performance

    2. I should add that Cakir also has a semifinal in EURO 2012. Honestly, do you want Cakir to whistle a semifinal in every big tournament ?

    3. Honestly, i would want the referee with te best performance to officiate the last match but clearly you don’t agree

      Delete
    4. Semi final or final should be appointed due to performance and the experience. If he deserves it in every big tournament then yes he should be appointed.

      Delete
    5. Cakir hater here again.

      Delete
    6. Guys, do you think that Champions League final is awarded only on performance principle ? No, every big referee will have only one, no matter how good he will whistle in a season. For example, it was preety clear that Mateu Lahoz will whistle the CL final.

P.S. I'm not a hater of Cakir, I'm not a hater of anyone. But you can't give always a semifinal to the same guy. It's a matter of common sense, there are many good referees in Elite.

      Delete
  37. A soft penalty for a shirtpull/obstruction to the player who was trying to contest the ball in a set piece sent Mateu home with comments from Rosetti that they won't accept such soft penalties. However, a soft penalty for a normal push on the strongest player of Belgium sent Brych to the QF and SF. Where is the consistency?

    1. You refer to the penalty given in ITA-BEL by Vincic. Obviously you are obessed with Brych...

  39. If I were Cakir, I would resign from international refereeing. Commitee and Ceferin clearly show that he will never get an important match anymore in all competitions. So there is no point in officiating. He has had an amazing career and it looks like nothing extra will be added to his palmares.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Does he need something extra in palmares ? He whistled a semifinal in EURO 2012, WC 2014, WC 2018. I think enough it's enough. There also other referees on this planet, not only Cakir

P.S. on the other hand, I hope SF and F will be the last international games for Brych and Kuipers. "Enough it's enough" it's also valid for them.

      Delete
    2. You don’t understand my point. I don’t care how many finals someone has officiated. If someone perfoms well, they should be rewarded. If they perform bad, they should be sent home. It’s as clear as that.

      Delete
    3. @Chefren

I consider this a a personal attack against me. I hope you will have a reaction against the posts of @Ref Paul and @Panterwe

I didn't say that Cakir don't deserve a semifinal or final. I said it won't be a tragedy if he won't whistle those games because he already had 3 semifinals in his career: EURO 2012, WC 2014, WC 2018.

      Delete
    4. Petschovschi, I understand what you want to say. But you should know that every appointment, especially in KO stage, should be 100% based on performance in the group stage. Cakir has been great in WC 2014, 2018, then he was chosen for WC SF two times. Now he is doing a very good job in this EURO (I think you agree this), then why he can't get a SF or F based on performance? This is fair and convincing.

    5. Haha when he manage excellent games,we cant see u anywhere,,but like this situations we can see u around.

  41. This appointment is utterly unexpected and more than unusual. I really would have expected karasev to get a semi for his good jobs throughout the tournament. With him as FO in semi 1 now this seems out of the question.

Concerning cakir - is there really anybody who is surprised that uefa and referee appointments are influenced by internal politics? Sorry, but this seems highly naive to me. Cakir would have deserved the final, but this is how the football world goes from regional to national to international level, so nobody really can be shocked now, right? Always has been this way, sadly always will.

  43. So, maybe the people, who saw this coming earlier and expressed their disapprovement at Rosetti and the appointments, were actually right and didn't deserve to receive such bad responces for sharing a personal opinion??? And maybe also Nijhuis deserves a praise and not bashing for his bravery and honesty to make all this dirt public? I will repeat myself again - I am absolutely disgusted by the way in which European refereeing is managed and I honestly believe that right now it is actually a stumbling block for the development of football in general.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Makkelie didn't deserve a semifinal. Cakir, if we have to see, showed better performances than the two Dutch referees and Brych:
    - 1. No OFR
    - 2. No VAR Correction
    - 3. Good management

    Makkelie:
    - 1. PK not whistled in ITA-TUR
    - 2. VAR overrule, FIN-RUS
    - 3. missed RC, GER-ENG

    Kuipers:
    - 1. PK not whistled in SVK-SPA
    - 2. wronk KC leading a goal, DEN-CZE.

Cakir needed to be appointed at least in a semifinal.
I hope he could obtain something in Qatar..

    2. Come on now… the corner by Kuipers was actually the right decision and Makkelie shouldn’t have issued RC, this has been discussed. Same applies to Brych, RC is not that clear. Also, if no OFR is a positive for Cakir, it should be a positive for Makkelie and Brych as well, right? Even though I agree with you (Cakir deserves at least SF), you should try to be more objective

  45. Btw speaking of politics - has anybody noticed DFB is the largest, most influential member of UEFA and Germanys national team normally always (except for 2018 and 2021) reaches the semis in tournaments, thus ruling out high-profile ref appointments for the likes of brych, stark and so on time and time again?

So UEFA took the rare opportunity to please its biggest member organization, however not wanting to go as far as appointing brych for the final, whlch would have been ridiculous given his BELPOR performance.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You have to be a strong character to make all the sacrifices needed to referee at the top level, just to have politics and whims play such a role in your success. But it has always happened at international (and domestic level). As well as Bering actually good, you have to have th reicht friends at the right time.

The last WC final is a clear example - Pitana should never have been chosen. Cakir was great in that tournament too. If politics were to play a part, it should have been to give Faghani the final as no Asian referee has ever done it and he was great.

PS - the Turkish article referred to ‘politics/lobbying’ helping Kuipers in last tournament too - what was that??

    ReplyDelete
  47. It is an unacceptable mistake to assign Makkelie to ref England again at Wembley. IT IS JUST WRONG. England will play Spain in the final.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ Chefren and Mikael W,

Please, don't get upset when you see a negative comment about a referee. Some people are inclined to look only for the good things in a referee's performance and others - just for the bad. But actually this is how balance is created. You have made a fantastic blog and you should be absolutely proud of yourselves. Keep going and good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  49. All Turkish news sites write that the referees of the semi-finals and final matches are determined. They stated that Çakır would return. The newspapers write that it is better understood why Ceferin sent Collina and brought Rosetti. And they state that UEFA's Ceferin has returned to the farm and Rosetti is a puppet. Poor UEFA.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Guys might we try to agree that yes, BelPor was the worst refereed match of the tournament. But this does not in general mean Brych is terrible or that he would be unqualified for a sf. It is Rosettis fault that this appointment has come to place, not brychs. So let us just wish him luck for a match i which he (or any ref) will need all the support they can get

    ReplyDelete
  51. To give the 2nd semifinal to Makellie is unbelievable. My arguments

    - last 2 games of this final tournament will be whistled by dutch guys. This is outrageous, is lack of common sense.

    - last game of Makellie was ENG- GER on Wembley. Next game is ENG- DEN on Wembley.

    - let's suppose Denmark will beat England. Thinking that Kuipers will have the final, than last 3 games of Denmark (QF, SF, F) will be whistled by dutch guys (making a 4/7 in entire tournament).

    - he already had the honour to whistle 2 big games in this tournament: the opening game (ITA- TUR) and a huge classic in international football (ENG- GER)

    - there were big mistakes in his games: clear penalty not given in ITA- TUR, offside after corner shown by AR (and confirmed by Makellie), VAR intervention in RUS- FIN etc.

It's not only about Roberto Rosetti. Entire referee committee should stepped down.

  52. I want to say one more thing for those who are crying for Cakir. Why you don't cry for Hategan ? He didn't have a game in KO stage, despite the fact that he had 2 very good performances in group stage.

I know, some of you will "red card for Ampadu was too much". That red card was mandatory, was a very good a brave decision.
I remember you that we have 3 red cards for SFP in this tournament (I didn't count the red card of Orsato because that one came after OFR):

    - Hategan in ITA- WAL
    - Siebert in DEN- WAL

Please, tell me which was the best decision from all these 3 red cards ?

So, maybe you will cry also for Hategan, not only for Cakir (who made a good tournament, I repeat).

So please, kindly show me where I insulted any referee on this blog???

  62. I fell in DEEP LOVE with this blog, last year at the start of the 2020 Champions League season. I enjoyed how many people shared their opposing opinions. And I learnt a whole lot by reading many of them.

Initially, I used to be just a "read-only" member. But due to the interesting comments and engagements, I decided to start commenting myself.

Although my comments are not perfect, I have NEVER insulted anyone or any referee, even when I disagree with their comments/decisions.

And I am very disappointed that Mikael W has chosen to attack me simply because we disagreed on a couple of refereeing performances.

It is very surprising to me, that this vindictive attack is coming from an admin. I'm even more surprised when I see that Mikael W sees and does NOTHING about other commenters who insult other members of the blog and who brutally bash referees.

He calls me a 'troll' for commenting my own honest opinion. And he disrespectfully tells me to go elsewhere to comment.

  63. Kuipers, the final referee at EURO 2020! Cuneyt Cakir is back!
In the finals stage of EURO 2020, the referees have been announced. Germany's Felix Brych will whistle in the Italy-Spain match, and Dutchman Danny Makkelie will whistle in the England-Denmark match in the other semi-finals. In the final, Dutchman Björn Kuipers, who had his last big tournament after a political decision and lobbying at UEFA, was assigned. Our pride, Cüneyt Çakır and his team, on the other hand, had to return to Turkey despite being the most important candidates for the final in the tournament they made history

    ReplyDelete
  64. I have to say, if it is true that Kuipers is already pencilled in for the final, I’m honestly worried about that. He hasn’t been on top form all year and hasn’t totally convinced me in this tournament either. This is not the Kuipers of old, he could really struggle in the final. I fear for his reputation and legacy because I think the game might not go very well for him.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Turkish media confirming Cakir has been left out of EURO 2020.

News website Aktif Haber and daily newspaper Cumhuriyet report Cakir and his team were invited to go to London to wait for the Committee's decisions. in London, they were told they won't be part of the teams in charge of the remaining three games. The Turkish crew is already on their way back to Turkey.

Final appointments are revealed by these Turkish media outlets: Makkelie in ENG-DEN and Kuipers in the championsgip game.

Absolutely sacndalous that the best-performing official, Cakir, doesn't even get QF or SF assignements. Plus, he's made to travel over to London just to learn he's not involved in the latter stages and has to return home.

It is now clear Rosetti is a puppet and Ref Committee has lost all credit. Has it ever happended in a EURO a referee being given five games, three of them in a row in KO phase? To rub salt into the wound, that referee (Brych) had arguably the worst display of the tournament (BEL-POR).

    Absolute disgrace.

  67. I don't want to say something about Brych's appearance, but I would like to express my strong rejection of the choice by committee to send Cüneyt Cakir home (although it isn't official yet). The Turkish referee showed his masterclass in many years of international refereeing and also in this EURO tournament.
Nonetheless, it's a bit naive to criticize Rosetti and his alleged politicial influence. It's clear that those assignments are NOT solely his decision. I'm quite sure that he planned differently and was outvoted by other authorities (especially Mr. Ceferin).
I would mark the 4th/5th July 2021 as black days of European refereeing, if the ignoring of Cakir turns out to be true.

  70. I have to say that I am not surprised - but I am very disappointed at the appointments from RO16 onwards.
At times they have been totally illogical which has put even further pressure on the officials.
To have some officials referee 3 times, whist others get none or 4th official appointments have been quite honestly baffling.
Just as an example - Why on earth give Brych 3 KO games, when another referee who has had a good tournament could have done at least 1 of those?
Why give Brych & Kuipers teams that have knocked out their own country the following match?
There just doesn't seem to be any forward planning at all.
If true, giving 2 Dutch referees 2 of the last 3 games, where others have not been involved is quite incredible including potentially giving Makkelie England twice in the latter stages (if true).
Appointments have been hugely influenced by political bias - Whilst not surprising, again extremely poor management of the referees involved.
If I were Taylor, Cakir, Karasev, Orsato & Hategan (to name just a few)- I'd be pretty annoyed!
At the start of the tournament, let's face it the names that we were all talking about being involved were Brych, Cakir, Orsato, Kuipers & Lahoz with Makkelie, & Turpin closely behind.
Somehow, despite all 3 having issues in their matches (if appointments are true) they are still there at the end!

    ReplyDelete
  71. It is good that Kuipers, Cakir and Brych will leave the international stage soon. It will give room to others. Hopefully with a bit broader group of refs. Now the top is too small. Other refs were very good this tournament. They deserve more.

  74. Being from the US we're not quite as passionate about Soccer as many of you are, but I enjoy reading the discussions and comments here. I don't understand why so many of you seem to be so negative towards Brych, and so negative overall? I also did not believe the BEL-POR match as the worst of the tournament. Here, if the referee isn't the news story after the game because a decision directly affected the outcome, then that's a small victory in itself. Clattenburg even praised the choice of Brych before the ENG-UKR match...

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9745947/Euro-2020-MARK-CLATTENBURG-German-official-Felix-Brych-ideal-choice-England-vs-Ukraine.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

I certainly did not expect to see Brych in the SF. Perhaps him or Kuipers for the final. I fully expected to see Cakir in one of these games so that was disappointing. I don't understand why he was sent home. He would have been an excellent choice for the final too.

Brych will surely have his hands full with ITA-SPA. It will likely be FAR more challenging than ENG-UKR. It could even be one of the most difficult assignments in the entire tournament so I wish him luck. If he does well than he will be praised. If not, I'm sure it will be the topic of much heated discussion.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No one is negative towards Brych. We value performance and transparency. Just that. Brych underperformed blatantly in BEL-POR. Two Belgian players got injured because of his indolence on top of other mistakes. And, as a "reward", he gets two other KO games? What is the rationale for this? How does this resonate with other referees who were sent home for less and those who have had solid performances?

This is, above all, a matter of clarity and decency. We all like to see merits being the guiding principle. Otherwise, it is football itself that winds up losing. What UEFA did to Cakir, particularly, is incredibly unfair and sends a very sinister message to the refereeing community.

    2. The irony that they were based in Turkey, so Cakir has flown from ‘home’ to London, only to be publicly sent back again with nothing. This just seems to make his treatment worse somehow. Very odd way to treat one of your top referees who has always represented UEFA so well. I don’t know the personalities, but Cakir comes across as a nice, calm, humble guy (less ‘sure of himself’ than others come across) and doesn’t deserve to be treated in such a way, in my opinion. Either that, or it shows that there was last-minute politics which changed the plans …

  83. Yes, it is not sure, but definitively possible.

    ReplyDelete
  84. In our Bundesliga referee blog, we had an anonymous comment today, which I consider worth translating, because it describes the situation very well IMO:

The "appointment policy" at this European Championship is pretty much the same as what we have seen in the Champions League at least in the last 2 years: On the one hand, there is definitely an openness for new names, for bold appointments - but up to a certain limit. In the last CL season there were many knockout round debuts, but from the quarter-finals onwards there was very "conservative" appointing and it became clear that there are only 3-5 referees who have the full confidence of the commission for the decisive matches. The Elite group is basically quite broad, but not at the absolute top. Here there were - even before the European Championship - mainly Kuipers, Makkelie, Lahoz, Brych and Orsato. Turpin and possibly Taylor were also in the mix.
Typical was the appointment of Brych in the second leg of the Europa League in a match that really could have been distributed differently. But the rule was (with Italian participation, Roma-ManU): no experiments.
It's the same at this European Championship: courageous appointments (Siebert, Ekberg), thoroughly innovative appointments that result from concrete performances (Siebert in the last 16, likewise Karasev; Vincic in the quarter-finals, likewise Oliver) - but then it's over. Rosetti wouldn't dream of appointing someone to an Italy-Spain semi-final who is not in the top "inner circle". Example Hategan.
Lahoz and Turpin had to leave early because they interfered in the games with extremely questionable penalties - probably the worst possible thing Rosetti could imagine, he said so at a press conference. It doesn't help that they were not blatantly wrong decisions and therefore not VAR material.
Rosetti will also prefer it, for example, if Brych gets through the game in BEL-POR with 5 yellow cards and no VAR intervention and nobody feels decisively disadvantaged afterwards, rather than (avoidable?) red cards like those of Hategan or, most recently, Oliver. Ultimately, the match management of Brych, Kuipers and Makkelie corresponds to Rosetti's ideal of good match management in important games.
With Brych, he has now overdone it with the additional quarter-final. One game less for Brych, one game more for Cakir - that would have been fair. If political reasons play a role here, that is absolutely condemnable!
But, and here we come full circle, Cakir has not been at the very top for the commission in the last 2 years.
A slightly more creative line-up for the last three games would certainly still have been possible if Italy and England were not in the semi-finals. Then Taylor would have been guaranteed a 4th game.
So it is a mixture of general reputation, participating teams, the "taste" of good match management and possibly political reasons - the latter is, again, so misplaced and weakens Rosetti's position.
That a line like Hategan's at this European Championship is not highly regarded is also shown by the non-appointment of Tobias Stieler - a consequence of his red card at the Bergamo game.
