Who will officiate 2021 UEFA Super Cup? Analysis and prediction

In a month, UEFA Super Cup will be played at Windsor Park, Northern Ireland. The contenders will be Champions League winner, Chelsea, and the Spanish side of Villarreal CF, after the success in Europa League.

After the end of EURO Championship, in a month the UEFA Super Cup will be played as official start of 2021-22 season for top clubs. This time the duel will be between a English and a Spanish side. Who could officiate the game? Let's make a short but exhaustive analysis.

One year ago the honor of this appointment was for Anthony Taylor, the English Elite referee was in charge of Bayern München - Sevilla in Budapest. This season referees from England will be out, due to Chelsea presence, and Spanish referees with the same preclusion for Villarreal.

Then, excluding the referees who already had this game in past years, the ones with a final reward in recent times and the names in my opinion unlikely to be appointed,  I think we can come to this final  shortlist: Slavko Vinčić (SVN), Artur Dias (POR), Ovidiu Hațegan (ROU),  Sergei Karasev (RUS).

The Portuguese will be busy with Summer Olympics in Japan, so for this reason he must be excluded.

The Russian would get this game as reward after a good recover  from a poor form with a positive participation to EURO 2020. But... the period of poor performances for him has been definitely too long, in order to get suddenly a final.

The Slovenian had a good EURO 2020 until the end of group stage, but then Belgium - Italy was not the best performance, appointing him for Super Cup is a valid option, but I think committee could make a different choice, because he can reach this target in future.

However, the strong name remains the same I predicted one year ago: it should be definitely time for Hațegan to be appointed in such a match. I think that in case of appointment of another referee, one should raise important questions about the reputation of the Romanian by committee. He seems to handle apparently good games with reasonable decisions, but for years something has already missed in terms of making a big step ahead. The incident in Paris didn't help, but now I think that committee can look at the future. Rewarding the Romanian for what he did so far would be a very fair choice.

So the final prediction is team Hategan, with maybe Italian VARs, as Hategan works with them.

Nevertheless, we shouldn't omit a special mention for Çakır, the Turkish would by far deserve this game, at least as consolation prize after EURO 2020... but... you know. Despite of his oustanding experience over the years for more than a decade very likely he will end with only one major final in his palmares, and that's surely unfair.

And you? What about your choice for 2021 Super Cup? Just let us know!

  1. Stop dreaming. Quite possibly Ceferin's son Vincic will be final.

  2. Keep Hategan away from Northern Ireland I say. There’ll be a few locals in the crowd so it’s for the best that he doesn’t get it I think. Vincic for me would be a good choice, or Cakir if the EURO was his last tournament

  3. Yes indeed Northern Ireland should be another argument against Hategan, I thought about that while writing but I didn't want to mention it... I think in case of appointment, this shouldn't be considered. The Romanian is a very unlucky man!

    1. Can you explain what's the problem with Northern Ireland?

    2. Hategan whistled a very doubtful/wrong penalty (handball) against Northern Ireland in their playoff game for WC2018 against Switzerland.

    3. I agree that Hategan has been very unlucky, and has deserved more in his career. He is the most unlucky referee there is, really. I would like to see him get this final but I think it will go to Vincic.

  4. Bjorn Kuipers only answer!

  5. Of the aforementioned names I would expect Vincic. I think he had the best performances last season and during EURO´s and he had the best appointments as well. Hategan for me never as convincing after the Paris incident as he was before.

Cakir also an option of course, but don´t you think he would be a great candidate for Nations League final in October?

  6. I think that Vincić will be a referee in SuperCup. Politics.

  7. I see some of you have bad memory or you are new to the refereeing. Ceferin has always caused problems for Slovenian referees. Skomina had to wait a couple more years for the UCL final, and Vinčić many years to enter the elite group. Mikael even posted an article about it a year or two ago. I doubt that Vinčič will referee the Super Cup. Precisely because of politics - Ceferin won't allow it.

  8. Hategan would be a sensible choice, but I think Vincic is in front him based on the appointments in the EURO and in the last season. Furthermore your argument regarding their future is a bit weak as Vincic is (maybe surprisingly) older than Hategan.

I also rather expect Cakir in the Nations League final, although it's not clear which of those two finals is more sonorous.
Also Brych could get a farewell in one of those two matches.

    So my Supercup prediction:
Vincic, Klancnik, Kovacic (all SVN), Stieler (GER) - Gil, Kwiatkowski (both POL)
Stieler, because he is IMO the strongest among the available Elite referees, who were not selected for EURO, so would be a small consolation.
Of course, it could simply be Jug instead.

  9. Predictions 2021/2022:

    Super cup: Slavko Vincic
    Nations League: Felix Brych

  10. Siebert or Vincic or Monzul at a guess. Outside possibility that it could degenerate if play-acting is tolerated, but Siebert's performances in Euro justify his selection IMHO.

  11. Well, I don't think that this year they will expriment with Monzyl. I predict that Vincic will officiate SuperCup. For Nations league I see Brych. For Conference League final I see Siebert. For Champions League contender this year is Danny Makellie.

  12. POL van Boekel has given an interview to a Dutch news paper “Algemeen Dagblad” about his experience as VAR at EURO2020.

He explaines for the people who are not that familiair with refereeing about the protocol of UEFA.

He stated that he personally found it a harsh decision to give the penalty in the SF. But as most of the readers here know, his hands were tight because of the protocol. Qoute: ”Soccer is different than Tennis. There a ball is in or out. Easy to call as a ref or a VAR. In soccer we have interpretation. That make’s it hard for the VAR. I find it hard to hear that people say that I made a mistake. Final responsibility is with the ref and not the VAR. This is not to critism Makkelie but to explain. I don’t wanna hide behind somebody as a simple excuse. I want to explain how things work.

Furthermore I am very happy with the support of the UEFA. It was a big disappointment that I couldn’t be the VAR at the final, but I understand it. There would be to much pressure on it. UEFA protected me and the team for that already before the final.”

And for the not dutchies at the forum. In the Netherlands it is very normal that referees give interviews. This is to be open and explain to the fans how things work in refereeing.

  14. You should all try to watch a game of Norwegian young elite referee Mohammad Usman Aslam.

This referee has a style unlike any other referee. He had some trouble adapting to the highest level of football but is now among the very best in the country.

  15. And why everybody is forgetting the italian referees? Just a question...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I rather expect Brych or Karasev.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that this year the choice is very difficult because most of the top referees have already officiate such final.
Added to Karasev, Hategan and Vincic I would not exclude Orsato, who never officiate such match and Siebert who really performed well at last Euro 2020, while I see less probable Grenfeeld and Kovacs.
If I would be Rosetti, I would appoint the following referees:
    SUPER CUP FINAL: HATEGAN O.
NATION LEAGUE: AYTEKIN (SF), COLLUM (SF), STIELER (3th PLACE), BRYCH (1st PLACE)
    CONFERENCE LEAGUE: SOARES DIAS A.
    EUROPE LEAGUE: MARCINIAK S.
    CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: MAKKELIE D.

    1. Interesting, I'm trying to understand more about the original source. Rosetti played the VAR audio of Makkelie penalty incidenmt. Do you have some links for this press conference (I guess it was something like that)?

    2. I also found two reports in Austrian media, which state that there was an online press conference today.
Otherwise the same info as in the Guardian article.

Someone really should have asked in the press conference, whether the penalty in the semifinal was a soft decision.

    3. Today there is a short article on La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian Newspaper, the journalist writing attended the press conference. I can add the following interesting info: three clear and obvious mistakes occurred, according to committee, during the whole tournament, one of them is handball in Turkey - Italy, the other two are not reported (very likely mentioned by Rosetti, but juornalist reported only TUR - ITA because Italian).
The situation in ENG - DEN with penalty whistled by Makkelie is a grey area and Rosetti can fully understand why Makkelie whistled it, from the pitch he had a perception of clear foul, defender didn't touch ball. This is something one must accept according to actual protocol.
Kuipers YC to Jiorginho: the reason explained by Rosetti is indeed the one we reported on the blog, he had hit ball before then he slipped into opponent, so argument for turning RC in YC. According to him, Kuipers was excellent.

    4. Forgot to add, the other two mistakes didn't influence the final score, as it was for TUR - ITA.
We can indeed guess mostly the situations occurred in Turpin game.

"I've been in really good form all year in the Bundesliga and in international matches. I came to the EURO with a good feeling, I brought a high level of motivation, willingness to perform and a zest for action. Physically, I was in good shape and absolutely in top form, I knew and was able to keep up with every tempo. Of course, it was also important that I could absolutely rely on my team with the two assistants on the sidelines, Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp, as well as my VAR Marco Fritz. A big, successful international tournament was all I needed in my career. Now my career feels complete."
"At the EURO, I was extremely focused for weeks, there is no other way to successfully compete in such a tournament. I don't think I can repeat this performance or this willingness to perform. That's why I've decided not to referee any more tournaments and to end my international career at the turn of the year."
"I do not want to comment directly on the (national) age limit. Too much has already been said about this. I can't hear it any more! In the context of this discussion, values that make a top referee were also massively violated. A top referee only becomes active when it is necessary. He does not put his own stamp on a matter or a game. That is how I have always done it in my time, or tried to do it, and that is how I will continue to do it until the end of my time."
"I am looking forward to the upcoming season in the Bundesliga"
