  1. Ok, so Brych, Hategan, Marciniak, Vinčić and Kovács are the ones who had matches in MD3 and are used again in MD4. And that's only in Tuesday's matches. I expect some names from MD3 and for Wednesday's matches as well, Oliver, Siebert and Turpin among them. Honestly, it's not a surprise to me, it was inevitable because not normal appointments could have be done. I think there will be at least 5 referees who will end up having 4/6, maybe even one-two with 5/6, which is not a bad thing imo. Consider Hategan had 6/6 last year, indeed under some special circumstances.

    2. Strong matches that had the peak of Elite referees couldn`t have the same level referees now if some of them wouldn`t have matches both in MD3 and MD4

  2. Interesting. How to interpret Rizzoli with Kovacs?
And do we expect Gozubuyuk to take Kuipers’ place in elite?

  3. It's time to change for committee, the classic pattern of appointments we knew by years (MD1/2, MD3/4, MD5/6) seems to be over for several reasons. This is because the choice within the Elite panel for some games is definitely narrow, and we have already discussed a long time about that. In this regard, one can read the debut of Hernández Hernández in Turin: it wasn't expected to see in a so short time another Spanish name for CL and there wasn't a real need: let's remember with already 3 Elite referees and a Category 1, Hernández Hernández is now the fifth name, but for sure the need of new trusted names for officiating certain games played a role there.
The changes are about to happen and I think there will be big surprises when new categories will be released.
The game in Turin is perfect for a debut: it is not important for qualification in the group and a win by home-team is expected.
On the contrary, I didn't expect at all Brych for the game in Sweden, and this appointment is absolutely without explanation if not a replacement or the fact that Brych couldn't officiate in other groups, no need of a very big name in such match.
Marciniak appointed again, but as said he will be out on November / December for FIFA call, so maybe he will miss MD5 (for MD6 he is already surely out).
Romanian referees are "trained" by Italian officials: very often VAR and even observers, Rizzoli, for them from this country.

    1. One single photo, without VAR lines, is not enough to say if it was offside or not.

    2. @matei14, we are now incapable of making offside decisions without VAR lines? Wow. That seems like it's going to be a problem for all those millions of football matches in the world without VAR. Uh-oh.

  7. Anyone watching As Roma - AC Milan?
53' Penalty given for Milan and after OFR Fabio Maresca kept his decision.
Personally, I gave credit to Maresca as Roma's defender didn't touched the ball but is indeed a questionable penalty.

  8. Chefren what’s the inconsistencies with VAR in Italy ???? It’s annoying to say the least because you don’t know what to expect. Last week VAR intervened for a penalty for Juventus against Inter but today exactly the same offense in the 90th minute for Roma wasn’t reviewed, exactly the same offense if not worse, please check it out

  9. Like Maresca and his style, punishing every action as it should be, but every game he is too much center of attention.
I wont be surprised to see that Serie A comitee send him on a break because of it.

  11. There are indeed big problems with VAR consistency in serie A games.
I can't deny that. This evening absolutely wrong intervention by Mazzoleni, one of the most experienced if not the most experienced Italian VAR PRO. He called Maresca to an OFR for a soft penalty: he should have backed the referee. Most important thing: it is not the first time that Mazzoleni calls a wrong OFR, it seems that he can't be technically accurate. He sees a contact on the ball and he thinks that for this reason all the rest should be annulled. He has a kind of too much "black or white" mind set: he doesn't read the nuances.
In this case, the penalty should have been justified for the previous contact on Ibrahiovic, yes, soft, but never a clear mistake.
On the other hand, we have a VAR like Irrati who backs every pitch decisions in all possible ways, some of you probably remember the penalty by Guida in Lazio - Roma some week ago, a clear mistake, but Irrati found a contact to back this decision, a very soft touch from behind. Two VARs, a totally different approach. I really don't know what to say, my opinion is that some referees are not so developed technically, I can't find other explanations, also, now, after a quite good start of season, we still seem to be again in the situations of previous year... that's absolutely not acceptable.
There aren't clear guidelines, all VARs think as they would be referees on the pitch!
Apart from this topic, however, Maresca style is not accepted by fans and teams, regardless of his decisions, mostly accurate and 100% correct by book, nobody wants him and I start to think it will be difficult to see him again in a big game. In many occasions, the result was the same. Fans and teams want other kinds of referees...

    1. Now watched all of his bookings, and here is my point of view:

7-Zaniolo-maybe too harsh having in mind that it is only 7th minute, but correct,he was too aggresive with his protest towards linesman
24-Karsdorp-again maybe too harsh, but Leao is going towards goal,so ref can be backed
27-Ibrahimovic-Dont know what Ibra did or said so I dont know
      41-Hernandez SPA,crystal clear
      49-Mancini SPA,crystal clear
      65-Tomori timewasting-justified
      66-Hernandez 2nd YC,SPA,clear IMO
67-Calabria for protests, dont know taht he said
      77-Giroud-using elbow,too harsh imo
      81-Kessie-clear,denying and timewasting
      97-Veretout,SPA crystal clear

    2. Well there is Italian media on his big match when Inter and Atalanta played.

So it's not all so black for him, maybe in the future we will se him handling a big match, altough some spoiled fans are not happy with his style.

    3. @Chefren
Absolutely wrong OFR! Fully supportable pk call because the tackle comes before touching the ball. I was really surprised.

      Delete
    4. Chefren honestly feel the VAR OFR is probably justified because the Roma defender kept on arguing that he got the ball and when he was as going for the review he made a gesture with his hands towards the eyes meaning he did not see any contact with the ball, that in is self is a different perception of what happened and I think that’s why he was called to see and he decided that the fouls happened before the defender got the ball. So here I think we can’t blame Mazzoleni without what was really said, and this is where we mostly get it wrong with supporting a decision or calling for OFR, it’s really down to what the referee has as perception and what is spoken between VAR and referee!!!

  20. Sorry but HOW it’s possible to deny PK which is completely OBVIOUS at 17 of Sevilla - Lille ! Is Guida sleeping as Kovacs ? Unbelievable !

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The defender touched the ball a bit, probably that was enough for the VAR to accept the play-on-decision.
Actually a bit similar to Guida's second penalty in PSG-RBL.

    2. Sorry but no, no and no. Disagree totally. And Kovacs was far away from action, zero body language or gestures…poor management here.

      Delete
    3. If you look closely indeed it seems like a slight touch with the ball was made, so the support from VAR is somehow understandable.
The fact that Delaney didn't touch David at first with his legs but a bit later with his body might mean that Kovacs considered the Lille's player fall before contact, and told VAR so.
Therefore, I think this is has to be a penalty.

    5. Thanks Dominik. Sorry but clear penalty here for me ! Another VAR stuff and penalty now. Kovacs not very convincing. Far away from actions. Several mistakes as now with unbelievable corner done to Sevilla. Sorry but very poor performance. Kovacs is lost on the pitch…

    6. Thanks Dominik.

A penalty should be given - when we try too hard to separate impeding (soft penalties -> don't give them) from classic tripping fouls, we end up in this kind of mess.

Everyone (rightly!) expects a penalty here. To be fair, we already saw this problem in Tottenham vs. Dinamo Zagreb last season.

      Delete
    7. Very poor refereeing by Kovacs. First time i see him and on this half, definitevely not Elite status. No acceptance by players, no natural aura or authority. Lots of mistakes. VAR refereeing the match instead of him…

      Delete
    8. I must say very similar situation to Leipzig - PSG second penalty two weeks ago, with Guida still involved, this time as VAR!
If Di Bello called him, then should today he should hava called Kovacs. What I can add is that in this case (today) the previous touch on ball looks even less clear, so strong argument for penalty. However, in this context, unless a very sophisticated assessment by referee who is not close, a penalty should be whistled. I think Guida was wrong in supporting referee! Unless Guida was told that situation in Leipzig with Di Bello calling him had been a mistake by VAR ;)

      Delete
    9. I watched the video 3 times and I still couldn't see the defender touching the ball. So I don't understand why the VAR didn't intervene. Clear mistake.

      Delete
    10. To be clear: I also think, this should be a penalty - just wanted to give a possible explanation, why the VAR didn't intervene.
And yes, even the small touch is not completely clear, one can only assume it from the last replay in the video above.

      Delete
    11. IMO 100% penalty. Defender tackled everything apart of the ball.

    12. Clear penalty, no doubt
But even in other situations his performance really bad, no consistent foul detection, no line, bad body language, I am really disappointed.

    2. The best replays are the one in the clip, no other angles shown as well.
I'd say the intensity is rather low or moderate, and UEFA would assess this challenge as a clear YC.

    3. With the video shown, I also have doubts about the intensity. Off the ball like that, it seems harsh to intervene.

  27. Correct penalty to Juventus by Hernandez Hernandez, tripping.

    1. Penalty missed and to be retaken (defender encroachment before the shot). Very good alertness, this is clearly the correct call.

    2. Anybody can see that. It's unnecessary to call it. It had zero effect on the penalty kick. It's exactly what IFAB don't want referees to call.

  28. Alejandro Hernández Hernández whistled a penalty to Juventus, it looked soft at first glance to me, but the touch happened. Before that, a possible foul when Juventus gained possession of the ball, but in my opinion not VAR stuff. Then, he spotted by himself an encroachment by Zenit players and the penalty was retaken. Very good that he didn't need VAR in this case.

  29. great Marciniak evening in Munich, hopefully to the end

  30. VAR intervention in Bergamo for allowing 2-1 by Atalanta, after a wrong offside flag by AR2. Extremely tight situation, but in such cases NO FLAG is always the expected decision...

  31. Potential SYC in Bergamo (55') - correct by Vinčić to assess this challenge as careless, and no sending off. Good small warning to McTominay too, would have liked a firmer reaction against this passive-ish mobbing by Atalanta players though.

    1. Good foul detection in a very fast match.

  32. In my opinion wrong penalty whistled by Hategan.
Di Bello called him to an OFR.

    1. Penalty cancelled after OFR. Good intervention by Di Bello, attecker clearly hit the defender's leg, no penalty.

    2. No penalty, foul in attack instead. Good VAR intervention.

    2. Yes, but without any showed consequence he is responsible and when he started his cardfestival, it was too late to regain control already. After that game he should be given some break. Hategan should now be in the lead for whistling in Qatar...

  39. Hot stuff for Kovacs with at least 11 YC and rain of yellows during additionnal Time. Not a very convincing match for romanian ref. Lack of authority and management.

    1. I can't recall any game where he did an amazing job. IMO wrong decision to promote him to elite in 2019 (maybe 2020, can't remember clearly). By looking at his appointments in the last two seasons, I also do not think committee trust him that much after his promotion

    2. He highest reached the round of 16 in UCL last season, where he did alright. But it`s very probably that it was the final test for EURO selection. About the trust, it is clear it is not that much as he got from the start only 1 game at EURO ( also a low profile match ). The promotion was surprising for many at that time but it was not a mistake in my opinion. I predict that now he will get a game in UEL in MD6 in the best case for the rest of the year.

  40. Penalty appeal mentioned by edward above in Brych's game: https://streamable.com/wazetf

The officials did made a clear mistake - they only missed a corner though, and definitely not a penalty.

    1. Yes I agree, arm by his body.

    2. "Italian" point of viwe: basically, the arm in this position should lead to penalty, but in this case, without touch, ball would have hit chest, so no punishable because body's volume was not increased. But in another circumstance this could have led to a whistle, in my opinion.
Interesting that this was totally missed by officials, they didn't assign corner kick, so you can understand how much difficult is spotting a handball on the pitch, most of the time a referee sees definitely NOTHING.

  41. How was Hernández Hernández?

    Replies
    1. He did well in a fair game. Besides a missed YC to Danilo for reckless stamp in 1H (for my taste), he wasn't challenged that much.
He got the crucial decisions right with a correct PK and its retake (defender's encroachment)
The spaniard passed the test, he can be satisfied with his debut performance.

    2. Very very good Hernandez Hernandez in my opinion. Match was fair and not very challenging but he has been extremely precise in each intervention. Penalty correctly repeated for early entry in the box, perfect Yc cards management, Yc issues whenever need and deserved, good physical fit a very quick and funny game. To be retested now in a more challenging match

  42. OT: Croatian female referee Ivana Martincic is appointed for Hajduk Split-Hrvatski dragovoljac on Sat 6th November 17.05h. Whoever knows a bit about croatian football, knows that Hajduk games could be very challenging for referees, especially when they play home. (recently Bebek has been suspended because of his private conversation after his game in Split), so this will be her "real" debut, I would say.

    1. Very risky from Croatian Comitee to appoint her, but then again, players are more careful when female is in charge so I have feeling that she will do well.

    2. @M
I hope you are right, although watching her other games in 2nd league I wouldnt take the risk yet. But maybe she could learn quickly. Her fitness is great, foul detection also, but in mannagement of some situations and disciplinary actions she needs to be more assertive and confident. Otherwise bad things could happen.
