I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I was not expecting Orsato in City v PSG.
ReplyDeleteAlmost expected appointments; very glad to see Peljto in CL, finally a new name. To me the only "anomaly" is Marciniak in Moldova, I guess that it doesn't need him, since he is also leaving to Qatar. To me a 1st class like Ekberg or Madden would be more suitable
ReplyDeleteMarciniak could be a replacement. He was not with his full team on Saturday (Listkiewicz as AVAR instead of AR2 and no Kwiatkowski as VAR).
DeleteSheriff-Real looks as straightforward game to 1st class referee only on the paper as its "small" Sherif and "big" Real but looking at the group standings its a big one for advance and this requires top referee as well.
DeleteDon't forget Sheriff won in Madrid...
DeleteAnother very good match of Marciniak in the Champions League. You can see that this season UEFA appreciates his very good disposition, nominating him to conduct the next match. In the match between Scheriff and Real Madrid, the YC is very well balanced and the body language is great. In this match, despite the fact that there were no mega-difficult situations to evaluate, there was no controversy when assessing other events. We keep our fingers crossed for Marciniak Team during the Arab Cup and hope that so many nominations from UEFA this season will result in refereeing at least the Europa League final.

DeleteI'm surprised by the appointment of CdG. A very important match for a referee who hasnt done so well recently.
ReplyDeleteFinaly Peljto!
ReplyDeleteNice to see Pejlto. Good match for him
ReplyDeleteDel Cerro Grande with imo the most difficult match. Crucial for qualification to the next rond
IMO, no real surprises here.
ReplyDeleteOrsato: Compared to the group H top game, the two teams are less safe for promotion. Furthermore also not many alternatives for him (only group C).
Marciniak: With the group situation and the first leg result, I am not surprised about a top Elite referee there.
Also, an appointment for him this week was quite expected due to the Arab Cup, I think.
del Cerro Grande: He was previously trusted a lot by UEFA, was punished with a EL match, but still one of the top ones of the round and got the relatively important MNE-NED. So it seems normal to me, that he returns to CL now, and then, it's the only group, where he could work this matchday.
Peljto: One of the candidates, that were mentioned for a debut. I still think, one should have a EL KO or play-off match before the CL debut, but OK. The match also makes sense with the group standings, although it easily might become a difficult one.
Vincic and Hategan with quite important matches in groups with little options for top league referees is logical.
And Zwayer and Massa with a bit smaller, but still relevant games, also corresponding to their current status, I think.
In my opinion Zwayer has a better game than Hațegan. But is clear that Rosetti doesn't want to take any risk as both of Inter and AC Milan are still in the race. First one for 2nd place and the other one for Europa League.
DeleteVery good appointment for Del Cerro Grande - very crucial and Dortmund with a special focus on refereeing this time.
ReplyDeleteVincic also well trusted by committee.
Zwayer is back, only a small injury/illness apparently, good assignment for him; he seems to be planned as Germany's reliable no. 2 in the future.
Very deserved debut for Peljto in CL.
Otherwise, normal appointments, I partly expected more "lower category" referees in games that are "easy on paper", e. g. Marciniak.
Finally Peljto made it. A very long wait for the Bosnian referee, some troubles and replacements, but at the end he managed to get his CL debut. Very good, we need new names in Champions League.
ReplyDeleteThe game is surely suitable, Ajax almost qualified and Beşiktaş rather out from everything.
The decisive game in the other group goes to del Cerro Grande, who still has a big consideration by committee, let's hope that this time he will show a good performance in Lisbon.
Then, Zwayer will be in Liverpool, congratulations to xabi and his predictions made yesterday. I must say the German is getting good games, and he has recovered, but Siebert still ahead in terms of consideration by committee.
The very last chance for AC Milan goes to Slavko Vincic, I was very curious about this appointment and indeed we have the Elite from Slovenia. In my opinion he is considered at moment a bit below the top Elite but better than all others, he still needs a very small step to reach the 100% top status like the very big names. These games give the chance to do that. Milan fans will remember Manchester United - Milan and a rather controversial performance, but I'm happy that committee didn't care about that.
Marciniak gets another game a few days before his trip to Qatar, the game will be very important, but maybe on paper anoter option would have been possible. I think that the first leg game in Madrid with Visser invited committee to this choice, but indeed some names are overused because there aren't other options, one must be honest.
Hategan in Milan for Inter - Shakhtar looks like a normal appointment, while in group A finally Massa is back in Champions League. With Orsato in the top clash, Brugge has still chances for qualification if they win against Leipzing, so the game is crucial.
Differently from Chelsea - Juventus and Jovanovic, in City - PSG we have a big Elite because there is indeed the chance that one of these teams could be eliminated, but very hard to happen.
Finally another remark, with Guida already in charge of PSG- Leipzing now we hace again two Italian referees for this group, something similar to the many German appointments made for group F, when there are teams from a certain nationality, committee seems to be in trouble, they have to make forced choices. In future, with more options and a longer list of Elite referees, this issue should be solved.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteChefren what do you think who will be the biggest 5 names in the K.O. Round 2022 after Brych and Kuipers finished their career.
DeleteMakkelie, Turpin, Marciniak, Orsato, Taylor.
DeleteThe first 5 names for the next Ko in my opinion...
Same. I was thinking also at Mateu Lahoz but I predict that we will receive from now the so-called "Cakir treatment".
DeleteIndeed, Mateu Lahoz is the name to follow, he could replace some of the mentioned five referees, but at moment what Mikael wrote some days ago seems rather true... a kind of Cakir treatment by committee for him in recent times. Hope this sensation is wrong, it would be even more wrong, if they insist with Del Cerro and the latter goes on with poor performances...
DeleteCakir tomorrow finally gets a new CL game (his last ??) on his 45th birthday !! A present for Cuneyt and then he leaves the international referee scene ?
ReplyDeleteHe will not leave international scene, he won't be demoted, unfortunately he will not be treated well by Ceferin & Rosetti duo.
DeleteUgur, do you know whether Cakir is being considered for WC22?
DeleteCan someone explain which performance justify Orsato selection for Manchester City vs PSG?
ReplyDeleteOrsato is one excellent referee.
DeleteI thought Orsato was excellent / very good in Portugal vs. Serbia.
DeleteI do not want to evaluate Orsato's performance but if you consider it under-par, Manchester City - Paris St.-Germain would be the ideal match for him: Both teams have at least four points more than Club Brugge und RB Leipzig which means that this game is currently rather irrelevant. Even Club Brugge - RB Leipzig is at present more interesting because these teams fight directly for the chance to reach the Europa League KO stage.
DeletePeter/Vienna
I just noticed - new AR1 at Hațegan's side. Is it a longer term technical choice to form a WC trio (Ghinguleac was parachuted in late of course for EURO)?
ReplyDeleteIt`s a weird situation indeed that I try to understand that started in October. The names are similar so read carefully. In October + November:
Delete03.10 - Grigoriu + Ghinguleac (another referee) in Romania Liga 1
17.10 - Grigoriu + Ghinguleac in Romania Liga 1
20.10 - Gheorghe + Ghinguleac in UCL MD 3
23.10 - Gheorghe + Ghinguleac in Romania Liga 1
02.11 - Grigoriu + Gheorghe in UCL MD4
12.11 - Gheorghe + Ghinguleac in Austria-Israel
19.11 - Grigoriu + Gheorghe (another reeferee) in Romania Liga 1
So:
Grigoriu + Gheorghe - 2
Grigoriu + Ghinguleac - 2
Georghe + Ghinguleac - 3
The numbers are very close. It is clear that Sebastian Gheorghe is always in European games because of his experience. The consolidation of a trio with Grigoriu for WC is indeed a very plausible scenario. It is possible that Hategan is not satisfied with Ghinguleac`s prestations. I remember indeed some off-sides missed in Benfica-Bayern by him. I don`t know what to think, but Hategan should decide faster about his AR.
In my opinion the best AR in Romania is Vasile Marinescu, but he is in Kovacs team. Sebastian Gheorghe is second. I appreciate Artene, Grigoriu and Ghiguleac are pretty much at the same level.
Kovacs is 4 years younger than Hategan and is catching up strongly.
DeleteGheorghe is already 45 and will turn 46 in a few months. Maybe he will be retiring at the end of this year?
ReplyDeleteHas the Romanian FA announced their nominations for the FIFA List 2022? Any changes expected?
Delete1) If Hategan will go to Qatar, Gheorghe`s age should not be a problem. Sovre was waiting the Euro, probably now Gheorghe waits the WC before retiring. Sure, from 2023 Grigoriu and Ghinguleac could work with Hategan "full time".
Delete2) Nothing announced yet. But I don`t expect any changes.
Why did Sovre not go to the Euros
ReplyDeleteHere the full sequence about Benfica disallowed goal in Barcelona.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/BB7Zl
Honestly, I don't understand some comments written yesterday, Karasev even waited for whistling before stopping game, so VAR was allowed to make a check, in case of evidence they would have corrected the officials. Without evidence, decision must be supported and I think this was the case.
OFR for Peljto after 20 minutes. Handball by #12 Ajax.
ReplyDeletePeljto with PK after OFR
ReplyDeleteOFR for Peljto in Istanbul, extremely clear handball, but very difficult to spot due to the position where the foul occurred. Correct decision by VAR.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, a quite tense game in Milan Hategan keeps control so far.
Correctly disallowed goal by AR1 in Milan, good decision.
DeleteOFR Peljto: https://streamwo.com/file/619e7aecaf64f
DeleteIn 37' a penalty shout by Inter, absolutely correct by Hategan to play on. More simulation than foul, a very soft touch and an easy fall. Good first half, quite demanding, not extremely difficult but still to be kept under control. We will see the second half.
DeleteI would have preferred a YC for Lautaro Martinez either for simulation or for reaction. But the lenient style could be also a good strategy for this game.
DeleteMissed yc for #17 Besiktas
ReplyDeleteGreat first half for Peljto. Only 7 fouls
ReplyDeleteVery good Peljto in first half. I am sad that they needed VAR for penalty situation, but it was not easy to spot it live, especially from Peljto's position.
ReplyDeleteGood debut of Peltjo in a easy match. Hopefully we see him again soon in the CL
ReplyDeletePenalty to Leipzig by Massa 16'
ReplyDeletePossibly dangerous play by the attacker.
DeleteIf not, the penalty is correct.
https://streamja.com/PJ77z
DeleteZwayer looks a little out of his depth in a fairly tepid game (LIVPOR) so far. Being influenced heavily by crowd / Porto bench I think.
ReplyDeleteWhat decisions did you not like? I think he did well until now.
DeleteJust more his body language doesn’t scream like he’s in control. Great no pen call against Tsimikas, but quite a few fouls / throws he seems to be waiting and waiting before making a decision.
DeleteGoal overturned by VAR in LIVPOR. Very tight offside on Mane.
ReplyDeleteOrsato take No action against dissents.
ReplyDeleteNo card even any warnings for that clear unsports behaviour by Psg Players.
Bad management
Deciosion was good in 1st half , every single whistle was Ok.
Agree. Just to note some bad positions (drop ball because of interception by ref on dangerous attack and PSG player interfered by Orsato and corner consequently).
DeleteGuys, Zwayer stayed 2 weeks without whistling, he lost the rhythm the shape and its quite normal. But everything is fine atm 56'
ReplyDeleteAgreed - since I initially commented has been totally solid!
DeleteI think Massa missed a red card to Lang (Club Bruges) for that tackle on Gvardiol. SFP for me
ReplyDeletePossible, but point of contact and intensity don't seem too bad in the replays, I think.
DeleteIntensity of the contact, I mean. The intensity of the tackle obviously was quite high.
DeleteBig mass confrontation in Lisbon, players are totally raging... In the end, it seems like a RC was given for VC.
ReplyDeleteStill missing a good replay to judge
DeleteUnfortunately no replays shown so far. German commentator is frustrated about Dortmund, the Portugese TV broadcaster not showing any replays and del Cerro Grande ("del Cerro Grande not so "Grande", "ridiculous refereeing"), about everything.

Red Card for Can by Del Cerro Grande
ReplyDeleteWhy wasn't the replay of Can shown? Disaster directed by Portuguese on TV
DeleteWorst call ever.
DeleteCan gets tackled. The attacker whinges and does theatrics as if he’s in pain from his own foul. Can merely yells at him and gets sent off for VC.
Del Grande as terrible as he was at Euro, does not deserve to be at this stage.
I agree, awful decision and where was VAR??? As for Del Cerro not for the first he is fooled by play-acting.
DeleteVery clear penalty for Sporting missed by Del Cerro, this one should be for VAR, no ball at all, only opponent.
ReplyDeletegreat Marciniak evening in Tiraspol
ReplyDeleteNever red card against for Can. He is clearly being attacked. The letter from Dortmund after the red card against Hummels went unanswered by UEFA. Until tonight!
ReplyDeleteReplay?
DeleteVAR should definitely be used to overturn wrong out of bounds calls, as Jesus had clear corner called goal kick.
ReplyDeletePandora's box there. What about the incorrect offside call in Madrid that should have been an Atletico corner but quickly turned into a Milan goal from the IDFK?
DeleteGood point, but could be used judiciously.
Delete@CWY2190 What exactly is the point you try to make? If not offside (for which we would need the offside lines to be sure), it would have been a corner in favor of Milan, not Atletico. Now Milan scores a goal after an Atletico(!) IFK. What’s the problem here?
DeleteMassa missed another RC, this time for VC. Intentional elbow to the face.
ReplyDeleteMissed VC by Massa? Only a YC was shown to Batalanta. Seemed like there was some action with the knee towards the opponent's stomach.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Missed RC for VC for #3 BRU. Clearly hits the oppenent into the face; first a small contact with the ellbow then a clear one with the knee.
DeleteYes, for me is clear a red Card.
DeleteNo doubt. Has to be a RC
DeleteA lot of interesting matches on MD6:
ReplyDeleteSalzburg - Sevilla
Wolfsburg - Lille
Atalanta - Villareal
Bayern Munchen - Barcelona
Porto - Atletico Madrid
AC Milan - Liverpool
Real Madrid - Internationale
All this games requires Elite referees. There are also some very balanced groups also in UEL and UEFA won`t take any risk. There are chances to see the 5th game this season for some referees. And a lot with 4 games because the real Elite list is really narrow in this moment.
DeleteBenfica- Dynamo Kyiv quite important as well...
DeleteChefren why does Italian AR always forcefully wave their flag to the center circle when a goal is scored!! You can see it I’m Massas aNf Orsatos game, it’s kind of funny😂😂😂
ReplyDeleteIt is used in Italy to indicate that assistant referees have spotted the gol, some of them make this in a very blatant way, indeed, I noticed it is not used in other countries, should be something taught by Italian assistant referees instructors in the years. If you watch Italian serie A, you always see that.
DeleteIf you look carefully you can see Can kicked an opponent in a knee with an open foot. Great spot by either AR1 or 4OF!!! A pity that a better replay was not shown by broadcaster though. That would prevent the narration in social media that it's a scandalous sending off.
ReplyDeleteSpot on!
DeleteIt was the 4th official who spotted it. He had a clear line of sight.
DeleteVery fair point ESR. I haven't seen a good replay yet, where you could make a good judgement. Also I would like to hear your oppinion on some very interesting clips from YB vs. Atalanta:
Deletehttp://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2021/11/champions-league-202122-referee_21.html?showComment=1637747979736#c2008656829489470557
Where is your proof? I can't see that clearly. Can goes after and bends over the Lisbon player. His right foot does not seem to have a secure standing. It is possible that he is standing for a second with his foot on the Lisbon player's knee. But it is not clearly recognizable! You accuse him of being violent.
DeleteIn German newspapers it is said that he should have grabbed him in the face.
So, it seems that Italian and Portuguese teams are a huge challenge for referees and a problem that cant be solved completely (I dont count Cakir here, that was more politics and media, but still). We have reported problems for Siebert and DCG in this round. I remember very well huge mistakes by Hategan and Italian VAR in Atletico-Porto. Cakir was good, but that last VAR situation produced a scandal. And in all cases we are talking about higher elite refs.
ReplyDeleteI would argue that one of the problems is that in domestic championships referees tolerate way too much dissent and unsportmanlike behaviour. They are used to it and they try to ignore, but it produces a counter effect.
Agree. Interesting discussion. The amount of dissent and unsportmanship is awful. When you compare it to rugby, there is a lot to improve. How many 'top' referees actually punish dissent on a regular basis?
DeleteSomehow I can understand why referees don't issue too many cards for dissent, because they don't want to end a game with 10 yellow cards.
Speaking about punishing dissent - as a Dutch I noticed that Makkelie has issued a lot more YC for dissent in the past months. In Lille-Wolfsburg (to a player who asked for a 2YC). In Liverpool-Atletico, to Koke and Suarez. Also in WC qualifiers and even in Dutch league (which is a pretty fair league IMO), he issued yellow cards for dissent. It is possible that referee assessors gave this feedback? I considered it as change of style.
Honestly I like 'managing' referees and not those who pull out a lot cards. But on the long term, it can definitely help a referee. Player start to recognize the style and know that dissent is being punished and stop doing it. So yes, maybe it is a good thing.
Is it possible to see Brych again on MD6 or was Man Utd-Villareal his last game?
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot crucial games on MD6 that require top elite refs. I noticed that Brych never appeared in Group D. Maybe RMA-INT or SHA-SHE to be his last international game?
I wouldn't be surprised to see Karasev and Hategan in a 5th CL game as well. There aren't that many options.
I think Brych will get another game. Many important games, few trusted names.
DeleteCould somebody who has some free time make a list with the number of games in UCL, UEL for every elite referee, eventually as VAR too ?
Indeed there will be so many crucial games in both Champions and Europas League on MD6. Definitely more than the number of all trusted Elite referees, in addition Marciniak and Siebert will be out, so we will have for sure some surprises at least in Europa League. The time for a very important exam for some of them.
ReplyDeleteI can report a very good performance from Vincic in Madrid yesterday. I don't know how Italian media evaluated his performance but as a Spaniard I liked his approach - always close, putting a lot of effort in managing the players in a match ready to explode anytime. It looked like he spent a lot of time preparing for this match, talking and calming down possible "troublemakers" throughout the whole 95 minutes. Besides that, only a few penalty area incidents after Milan scored - one penalty appeal on each side, IMHO correct to play on.
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch game, not big discussions about Vincic by Italian media, mostly because Milan won, of course, but indeed a not perfect performance is reported. The card management is highly criticized. Among others, it is reported that a clear yellow card for Krunic was missed, while a very harsh one given to Giraud.
DeleteGood Morning :)
ReplyDeleteAs promised at the beginning of the season, I've been keeping track of all UEFA VAR appointments.
I was planning on releasing the first version of this after MD6 but as matei14 asked in a comment above, here it is :D
VAR FULL LIST: https://docdro.id/AA4v32p
VAR TOP VAR: https://docdro.id/gK2kSOX
VAR TOP AVAR: https://docdro.id/d87IPGr
VAR TOP TOTAL: https://docdro.id/CAkXbsV
Please let me know if you find any mistakes, everything has been done manually so it wouldn't surprise me if I messed something up :D
Also if you would like to see a individual list of most VAR appointments in CL/EL etc. just let me know :)
WOW, I just can say thank you for this excellent work, I will check it in detail soon!
DeleteWow, impressive amount of work. Thanks a lot!
DeleteThank you!!!
DeleteThe two reported incidents from Massa's game
ReplyDelete63' reckless or SFP?
https://send.cm/d/6P8E
85' UB or VC?
https://send.cm/d/6P8F
Thanks, I think there are strong arguments for a red card in 85', in my opinion all what player does is deliberate, but still, in reality, you can't have the 100% confirmation of a violent conduct, so VAR is forced to support. I can add, this is the typical Massa, very reluctant in issuing red cards, differently from other referees, he makes always such choice in a borderline situation. About the foul in 63', possible RC, but again, not 100% and VAR was right as well in staying silent.
DeletePersonally I don't like this style by Massa, he doesn't interact too much in the games like other referees, this can lead to such situations.
Interestingly, Massa got a very good assessment in German media (kicker: "Very good foul detection, clear line, was right in all important situations.")
DeleteHello Philipp S and ESR! I would like to hear your oppinions on some very interesting clips from YB vs. Atalanta:
Deletehttp://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2021/11/champions-league-202122-referee_21.html?showComment=1637747979736#c2008656829489470557
Chefren, prediction for MD6?
ReplyDeleteI will write about that later! I'm checking all the options.
DeleteMy current idea:
DeleteLeipzig-ManCity: Gil Manzano
Paris-Brugge: Hernandez
Porto-Atletico: Oliver
Milan-Liverpool: Bastien
Dortmund-Besiktas: Frankowski
Ajax-Sporting: Guida
Donetsk-Tiraspol: Gözübüyük
Real-Inter: Kulbakov (or Brych)
Bayern-Barcelona: Kovacs
Benfica-Kiev: Cakir
ManUnited-Bern: Ekberg
Atalanta-Villareal: Taylor
Salzburg-Sevilla: Makkelie
Wolfsburg-Lille: Hategan
Zenit-Chelsea: Stieler
Juventus-Malmö: Visser
Jovanovic 4.match?
DeleteThere have been many referees with 4 games and they are ready to get the fifth as well.
DeleteInteresting predictions!
DeleteI really hope to see Brych one more time. Real-Inter would be a nice farewell. Both teams already qualified to the knock-out.
Turpin is expected in a 4th game? Group C or D are available options.
Taylor: nice suggestion for Atalanta-Villareal and possible because Man utd is already qualified?
Cakir is still a very very good ref. I hope to see him in a deciding game. He just needs a reliable VAR :)
Hategan and Karasev could get a 5th game - they are flexible refs based on politics.
@Jovanovic: I don't think, it's necessary to give a First group referee a 4th game. But maybe he'll work in EL on MD6.
Delete@Brych: Yes, I agree, that this would be the ideal farewell, if he gets one more CL match. Otherwise, RMA-INT could be used as test for someone as it is only about first place.
@Turpin: Yes, he could get a 4th game, but in the possible groups C and D again only RMA-INT is interesting - and then see the previous point. Maybe RBL-MCI would be an option for him.
@Taylor: Indeed. Same for Oliver in group B.
@Hategan/Karasev: Yes, but I would still prefer to distribute the matches more evenly, if possible. But in group G that's very difficult...

DeleteSiebert will be out because in Qatar with FIFA.
DeleteI start to think that a referee could get two appointments on that week, the first on Tuesday the second on Thursday :D
@Marko, Mateu Lahoz already had Man.City on MD4, Brych already had Milan on MD3, Turpin already had Barcelona on MD3. But very difficult to avoid those double appointments..

ReplyDeleteThe full sequence of mass confrontation in Lisbon.
For sure Del Cerro got some inputs from fourth official.
Still not completely clear, what Can's offence was:
Delete- Attempt to hit?
- Kicking?
- Stepping on the opponent?
All three points seem possible, but are not fully proven by the pictures.
However, the RC seems to be well accepted by Dortmund and German media.
I see more reasons for a rc in the Brugge game than here
DeleteVery difficult to make predictions. Brych with a farewell he deserves. Turpin and Mateu Lahoz saved for a tough match in EL.

Taylor is actually a very good suggestion for Porto - Atletico. This is a tricky game; probably the toughest game on paper - two emotional teams in a 'do or die' clash. The other 'top 5' elite refs already officiated one of these teams. I don't see any other options.
DeleteOliver after BVB-AJA? Don't think so...
We have some similar choices, just some remarks, Hategan would appear again in the same group after the rather controversial game he had in Madrid, this is possible because the two teams are different and he would be again in Madrid, but I changed option for this reason. Then, about Cakir and Bayern - Barcelona I was about to make this choice, but it is a very big game, given the recent consideration by committee and all the discussions about him, I'm not sure he could get such a sonorous clash at moment, but based on standings it would be absolutely OK because Bayern already qualified. We will see...
DeleteI agree with both points you mentioned! Regarding Hategan, it is extremely difficult to find referees for group B and G. It is almost impossible to avoid double appointments in the same group (for example Karasev already whistled Liverpool on MD2).
DeleteCakir deserves a top match, but it's not likely he will get one. Vincic is another candidate for this match but I think he will be kept for group G.
Predictions for MD6:
ReplyDeleteLeipzig-ManCity: Hernandez Hernandez (ESP)
Paris-Brugge: Grinfeeld (ISR)
Porto-Atletico: Taylor (ENG)
Milan-Liverpool: Karasev (RUS)
Dortmund-Besiktas: Rumsas (LTU)
Ajax-Sporting: Mariani (ITA)
Donetsk-Tiraspol: Kulbakov (BLR)

Bayern-Barcelona: Vincic (SVN)
Benfica-Kiev: Kovacs (ROU)

Atalanta-Villareal: Makkelie (NED)
Salzburg-Sevilla: Hategan (ROU)
Wolfsburg-Lille: Guida (ITA)
Zenit-Chelsea: Gozubuyuk (NED)
Juventus-Malmö: Visser (BEL)
I was really in trouble to make all choices, especially in some groups we had already all big names. It will be absolutely interesting to see the choices by committee. And this, still without considering EL assignments, I just left only two or three Elite referees without a game, saved for EL...
The situation in group G is absolutely incredible, I don't think that Guida will be appointed there, but no options at all!
Guys, any comments about Zwayer's performance?
ReplyDeleteI thought he was calm and his foul detection was good. Once he gave offside after a possible foul in the box, he looked a bit hesitant and it would have been better to not whistle, because Porto could have had a counter attack. Also, the last scene of the first half, he whistled offside just as a liverpool player shot on goal. I think his assistant should keep his flag down and wait if it is not very clear offside.
DeleteBut as I said, all in all a good performance IMO.

No Wolfsburg for Cakir. He whistled Wolfsburg on MD 5. I fear, as Chefren does in his predictions, that we will not see Cakir at all at MD 6. Again : Cakir is 45 now. Are we sure that he will continue in 2022 ?
DeleteThe situation of Turpin is very particular, appointed yesterday in Europa League, one could think he is kept for a crucial game in CL on MD6, but:
ReplyDeleteGroup A with PSG and, apart from that, the games don't need him
Group B not possible after Milan - Porto
Groups C - D no need of him
Group E not possible, would be with either Barça or Dynamo again
Group F he officiated Villarreal - Atalanta and the other game doesn't require him
Group G There is Lilla
Group H Nothing interesting there
So maybe he will be again in Europa League. I didn't check that, but maybe committee had the chance to appoint him in CL this week in a game? However, there are the forced options: handling again the same team, either in Milan group or Bayern - Barça. We will see.
Well, RBL-MCI and RMA-INT would be possible matches for him (if you don't considered them too "small").
DeleteThis week, SPO-DOR would have been an option.
Yes I consider RBL-MCI and RMA-INT as too soft. Going in a deep analysis, indeed the fact that committee could have appointed him for a game like Sporting - Dortmund, could mean that they will appoint him rather in a CL game, otherwise they would have used this option... but... it is also true the game in Lisbon was a very rare one in which a Spanish was possible, this is another argument!
