Another very good game for Siebert
ReplyDeleteWe can clearly see Stuart Attwell has been punished!!! Either for the Dortmund game and also the Italy game where he intervened!! And rightfully so.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThis is the First time Kavanagh is acting as a VAR for Taylor!!! Attwell has always been with Taylor and Attwell is/was seen as number 1 VAR in England so why he has been with Oliver is because Taylor has not been appointed since Matchday 1, so this definitely says that he has been punished
DeleteNo, Kavanagh was also Taylor's VAR in his first CL match this season (Kiev-Benfica), while Attell was with Oliver in all his 3 CL matches. So the swap already happened at the beginning of this group stage.
DeleteHowever I agree that Attwell was England's number 1 VAR and we will have to see, whether he remains in that spot.
Chefren got his prediction for Jovanovic spot on!!! Top mark for you Chefren!!!
ReplyDeleteFor me the biggest match goes to Sergei Karassev
ReplyDeleteThanks Chiagozie, it was not difficult to guess that committee could have used the game in London for a Category 1 on his way to promotion.
ReplyDeleteIndeed I think that the Serbian now clearly belongs to the names who will get their promotion at the next category updates. I shared some doubts about his performances in occasion of some games, but the conclusion is that he is definitely better than other Category 1 who are in contention for the big step and very likely he will reach Elite status. The game is absolutely not important for the standings, both teams will qualify. The other game in the same group will be officiated by Treimanis, here I must say it is very nice to see him again in Champions League after a long time, I hope he can recover but at moment is very difficult to think that he could get more.
Committe can't renounce to Taylor and therefore Attwell is not appointed with him: this was more than expected to be honest, too many mistakes by the English VAR in recent times. Interesting that Kavanagh will be with Di Bello, however they will be from Nyon, so it is not the first time of a mixed VAR team. Crucial game in the group and the other one to Cakir, very good for the Turkish as well.
Then, about group F: again German referees. Let's remember that Brych had officiated Atalanta - Young Boys while Zwayer had been assigned to Manchester United - Villarreal. Now again two German for the group. With teams from Italy, Spain and England in the same group, committee is in trouble to find different names from other nations.
In case of possible decisive games on MD6, I see already Makkelie in this group as last option...
Having said that, another crucial game for Siebert.
Karasev with a hot match in Barcelona, this will be for sure a big task.
You can clearly see that now he belongs to the very Top Elite.
Which category 1 referees would you say have the best chances to reach elite status in the next few seasons? Siebert seems clear to me, and Ekberg probably? And then? Hdz Hdz, Schärer, Visser?
DeleteCassius, I think Letexier will be promoted
DeleteAt moment the first name is Siebert, without doubts, he should have been already promoted, but this was not possible. Then, I think Jovanovic will follow, I partly understand what Euro Soccer Ref wrote below, but it is also true that the quality of some Elite contenders is not the same as it was during Collina times. Ekberg is another referee under the spotlights of committee I would say by years and a promotion could follow.
DeleteSchärer is another option while I think Visser still needs time, then I think one must add Gözübüyük as candidate, recently he was definitely better than the past. Letexier is another name with a chance to join Elite as third French, I think this would be deserved. Then, regarding Italy you find my analysis in some previous posts, at least one between Massa and Guida will get this status, but for some reasons I'm not convinced at all.
The big disappointments so far are Kabakov and Tremanis, with a very long sequence of mistakes in several games. Impossible to think that they will get promotion... would be very contradictory.
About Hernandez Hernandez, at moment Spain wouldn't need a fourth Elite, so I think committee can wait in this regard.
Having already so many names ahead, doesn't help in taking advantage of the new category, this already happened with Gil Manzano in past.
However, given that we expect many promotions and a radical change must be made inside the Elite Category, committee can't wait anymore, for sure we will have some names being promoted not 100% deserving that...
Thanks for your analysis! Will there also be demotions of the Elite category? I think there are some names that don‘t „need“ to be there anymore based on performance and appointments… Aytekin and Collum for example, but I have also doubts about Sidiropolous…
DeleteYes there are some names in Elite who deserve to be demoted, but this never happened in recent times, only very extra-ordinary cases, like Moen (first name to be mentioned in this regard) and a few other ones. This was the same also during Collina, only political reasons, so I don't expect demotions, would be very surprising, but at least some new names must be added!
DeleteSvein Oddvar Moen has one of the most shocking careers paths in history. With a UCL quarter-final at 33(!) years old, he should have become maybe the best of his generation. In comparison, Kuipers had his first UCL quarter-final also in 2012, and he is 6 years older! I don't know what happened after that because I started being passionate about refereeing only about 2 years ago but it seems inexplicable to me, after 2018 his international career almost ended. Nowadays he is only in Second category without any big games at all. And he is only 42.
DeleteMoen actually got zero UEFA appointments in the last 2-3 years. In these circumstances, not sure why Norway keeps him on their FIFA List?
DeleteTreimanis in UCL after a horror season? I like him as a ref and always wished him promotion to elite but... no performance principle anymore under Rosetti?
ReplyDeleteBut on the other hand, Rosetti is in a weak position too. Only Siebert really deserves a promotion (that he was not promoted after EURO is scandalous) and he already is a top elite referee although still being 1Cat. The other names either disappointed too many times or still have not enough experience.
Under Collina you had to perform exceptionally well (with exception of politically promoted Turpin) in order to be promoted / get big clashes / earn top position. I have a feeling that Rosetti doesn't pay or is forced to don't pay attention to performances so much. The only factor that counts is assessment of big calls and avoiding media attention.
Maybe it's Čeferin's philosophy but it shouldn't be like that in refereeing... Too much attention is paid to media reception instead of technical assessment of each performance.
Well, new elite names are needed as many top refs retired or will retire soon and some of the elite refs are not up to the task. The big problem is that those in 1Cat don't perform well, too. It's indeed a difficult task for the committee to select the best among average ones.
I just wonder what is the reason of too many weak performances of some elite and most of 1Cat referees last seasons. Don't you think that under Collina the referees were better managed / controlled or had more respect to him / were aware of need to perform well not only regarding big incidents in order to reach something?
I partly agree, as I wrote above, it is true that with Rosetti we have a different management but one of the reasons can be the fact that the quality of some contenders is not the same as it was in past. Having said that, I agree that Collina was more meticulous under the technical point of view, but in my opinino that's also because Collina is Collina... you will never find a so expert person about refereeing. Rosetti has a different approach, it seems as he doesn't care too much about the technical point of view, but he rather tries to give more opportunities and to estabilish a trust relation with the committee. This of course can't work when a referee has not the required level of technical ability. The fact that nowadays committee seems more worried to avoid big mistakes than to real looking for the development of referee is true, but I repeat that as long as you are missing good referees, you will be forced to choice "the best among the worst". I say that with a big respect and I think there are at moment many good names inside UEFA, but at the same time, definitely some very poor officials.
DeleteWell, I dont think there is a huge problem currently, there is a solid number of good referees to cover the most important games.
DeleteThe problem could indeed be that some of the elite candidates dont perform better than those that are currently in low elite tier and in reality dont belong there. But still, Umut Meler, Guida, Siebert of course... there are few of them who seem to be very reliable.
Possible last international game for Brych in Spain?
ReplyDeleteCan anybody explain me why Turkey change Fifa referees so fast, on example after two years?
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed this doesn't help in terms of international development. Also, Palabıyık seems to have been already forgotten by committee, maybe a few time and it will be the same for Umut Meler? I write that only as point for discussion, nothing against the referee. Turkish committee should find definitely more balance in their choices, otherwise there will be never a new Cakir.
DeleteChanging so fast? Cakir is a fifa ref since 2006, Gocek since 2008, Kalkavan since 2013, Ozkahya since 2009, Palabiyik since 2015, Meler since 2017 and the newest is Kardesler since 2020. The problem is that uefa does not trust them so much so they don’t get appointed for games in Uefa. Everything used to be focused on Cakir and actually the other refs were just forgotten. So not so much an issue with TFF but rather a mismanagement of uefa referee commitee towards other turkish international referees.
DeleteTurkish FA and Refereeing Committee generally relies on 4-5 names and other 2-3 names change frequently. Recently because of a game in Turkey there was a discussion about Ali Palabıyık's FIFA badge can be taken but UEFA and FIFA didn't allow them to make that change.
DeleteWhat do people think about the state of refereeing in England bar Oliver and Taylor who get appointed regularly there doesn't seem to be many trusted by the committee
ReplyDeletePaul Tierney is definitely trusted by the Pgmol in England, he is definitely 3rd on Mike Riley’s list but he is nowhere close on terms of UEFA the. Chris Kavanagh is one who had made strides in recent years until his injury and he is projected to be next English Elite after Taylor !!!
DeleteAgreed. Paul Tierney has been getting some big games in the Premier League this season.
DeleteMeler is in charge of one of the hottest games of Europe ( Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce ) tonight, and after such a game he will go to Kyiv next day and will officiate another game on Tuesday. No time for rest especially mentally.
ReplyDeleteI report an outstanding performance by Guida in yesterday's Fiorentina-Milan game.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone seen the incident in Scotland between Dundee United and Aberdeen where Bobby Madden gives second yellow card to Aberdeen Ojo, personally very harsh decision, player is assaulted and shows great restraint to not really react and I think Madden loses the situation
ReplyDeleteYes shocking from Madden completely lost control of the game yesterday. Expect Crawford Allan at SFA to demote him for few games. He had already sent off dundee united's 18 for VC against Aberdeen's Ramirez for what looked like punch on his mid drift/goolags. Almost potential missed SFP after about 3 minutes challenged only punished by yellow. Lost control and started dishing out cards left right and centre cos he was flustered
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqDKJbseVpg
Delete02:45
The point of Madden should be that player had to avoid this run towards the stands, this can be read as provoking the fans.
I think the YC is correct, not a polite behavior by player, he should have avoided to make such action, then surely he was only pushed without doing anything, but the main responsibility about what happened belongs to him. Definitely not a wrong decision by Madden.
Chefren the players momentum takes him over the barriers the player is then pushed by the supporter (assault) the player makes no retaliation with the supporter. Supporters can push players and its ok now?
DeletePlayers simply are not allowed to challenge supporters. After the push he just should have gone back.
DeletePredictions for tomorrow:
ReplyDeleteSHE-RMA: Soares Dias
INT-SHA: Greenfeld
ATL-MIL: Marciniak
LIV-OPO: Zwayer
BRU-LEI: Del Cerro
CIT-PSG: Makkelie
SPO-DOR: Orsato
BES-AJA: Mariani/Massa
Only a remark, Marciniak can't officiate Milan again.
DeleteThe rest should be all possible, I think, if Zwayer available.
Zwayer isn't available just next week guys :(
DeleteZwayerbrazil - was Zwayer planned to go to KSA this weekend? Victor Gomes has a game next weekend, so I wondered if Busacca was now using Navarro's gaze there to assess referees on the road to the next WC.
DeleteYes he was planned to be there. But he isn't going well this past few weeks, they replaced him for Dankert.
DeleteVery important piece of info - thanks a bunch for that!
DeleteBest wishes to Zwayer for a speedy recovery :)
:)))
DeleteProbably he will be back next week, he isn't 100% health still....
OT: "Adriatic derby" Rijeka- Hajduk in Croatia, 2 pks (2-1 and 2-2 on the link) after OFR. Tihomir Pejin is the referee (former FIFA), Fran Jovic is VAR.
ReplyDeleteEspecially interesting for me is the 2nd one (2-2)
https://www.goalstube.online/2021/11/rijeka-hajduk.html?m=m4
Correct VAR intervention?
A nego sta je nego ispravno, klasicni missed incident
DeleteI mean, for me it is supportable but not 100% clear pk, and by calling for OFR, you put the ref under huge pressure. But yeah, if not seen at all by Pejin and AR...
DeleteAnybody saw the ridiculous yellow cards given by Olver to Klopp and Arteta when they clearly were both at least 4 meters outside their technical areas trying to fight each other? Such clear red cards it's laughable how these pro refs ignore the laws of the game.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Quite ridiculous how Oliver interprets Law 12.
DeleteI have a different view to this. I thought Oliver dealt with it well live. He made clear it wasn’t to happen again and calmed everyone down well. Both managers respected him and importantly nothing else happened on the benches for the rest of the game.
DeletePerhaps this is where my personal philosophy differs a little. I know this may not be down to the letter of the law but what’s the outcome we want here. I would argue exactly what happened. Rather of Oliver sends both managers to the stands how does that play out? Game is a totally different beast at that point.
Meler is one of the worst referees in Turkey. I dont understand how they can manage a match in Europe. Because he is discussed after every game he managed in Turkey. For example, like tonight's game.
ReplyDeleteI dont know for Turkey, but in Europe he performs well mostly.
DeleteHe hasnt managed important match in Europe so far. Good Luck!
DeleteI didn't watch many games with him but in those I watched he didn't convince me - too insonsistent and weak leader on the pitch.
DeleteMeler' performance... Galatasaray-Fenerbahce match highlight..
Deletehttps://streamable.com/h261o2
I believe it is a new development for this season since Lee Probert became reffing director there(?) - foreign referees are handling games in UAE's Gulf League. Clubs can pay the fee of around €41 000 in order to secure a 'foreign whistle' for a given match.
ReplyDeleteSo far, three well known UEFA referees have gone in 21/22:
Çakır: https://www.uaefa.ae/en/match/42084
(FMR) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoB_lIR4XFk
Stieler: https://www.uaefa.ae/en/match/42099
(FMR) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjLqfeBT3QE
Doveri: https://www.uaefa.ae/en/match/42108
(FMR) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiJXE6RrITo
This is NOT the way to develop domestic refereeing. Another Saudi or Greece after Clattenburg from England? UEFA referees should think more before depriving local referees from games and chasing money.
DeleteWow, match suspended in Lyon, anyone know why?
ReplyDeleteChoc des olympiques tonight (Buquet) suspended in 5' due to a bottle of water impacting on the face of Payet.
ReplyDeleteWatching little bit Sociedad vs Valencia, Melero with no control, inconsistency with bookings and every whistle crowd and players from both sides aee against him.
ReplyDeleteNow little bit calmer at the end, but still I feelcthat he will be criticized heavily.
DeleteI can't understand how he can stay in Primera instead of many other easily demoted referees. He should be demoted many years ago.
Delete@Anonymous
DeleteMelero's father-in-law holds a very important position in the Spanish football federation.
Agree that all in all melero is not one of the best refs in la Liga. But this performance was really strong in my eyes. Not playing this theatre with the players. Good red card spotted and also all the yellow cards were needed
DeleteOff-topic: two handball decisions from the first round of the MLS Playoffs
ReplyDeleteSKCvsVAN: https://streamable.com/dutd06
PHIvsNY: https://streamable.com/i8xw6m
My views are actually opposite what was ultimately given by the officials.
DeleteIn the SKCvsVAN clip, I think the slow motion makes it look worse than it really is. To me, I think there's an argument to be made that, since the defender is trying to head the ball, the arms are in a natural position for this action. We've all seen players head the ball with their arms out for balance like this, so my gut reaction when I saw this play was no handball for this reason. Don't get me wrong: I can see this one both ways and I don't think that anyone who wants a handball here is necessarily wrong. It's a subjective one to me.
On the second play, I'm honestly a bit surprised that this didn't go to review (assuming the contact was in the box, which I'm pretty sure it was). The arm is much higher than in the previous clip, and unlike the SKC-VAN incident, there's no argument to be made (at least that I can see) that the player is taking part in any action for which it might be justifiable for his arm to be that high. Am I missing something here? To me it was a clear handball. [There's also a possible trip here that could be a penalty, but without another angle, that's less interesting than the handball shout]
A third clip, from Portland vs Minnesota. Handball seems to be a central topic in the playoffs so far!
Deletehttps://streamable.com/6obuee
Thoughts on the Fragapane challenge in Portland v Minnesota, for me a clear missed RC. Villareal was poor in that game IMO.
DeleteI saw somewhere that Tihomir Pejin is not Fifa ref anymore. Why is that?
ReplyDeleteI am not aware if there is some "politics" behind, but since he wasnt able to earn his promotion, IMO it made sense to give a chance to someone younger (Dario Bel in this case).
DeleteLooking forward to some great action tonight. Ok, here is a play in a youth game I saw recently: a player got hit in the head near the corner of his offensive half's penalty box, so the ref stopped the game for the injury. A teammate of the injured player had possession with his back turned to his attacking goal. The referee restarted play with an uncontested drop ball, and the ball was volleyed to a teammate rushing toward goal, who scored. A normal, unthreatening possession turned into a goal scoring opportunity. Uncontested drop balls have never looked normal to me. What could keep the same thing happening in a high level match that happened in the youth match?
ReplyDeleteVil-MUn DELAYED due to a com issue.
ReplyDeleteBrych has technical problems with VAR
ReplyDeleteSome technical problems with Brychs headset. Maybe no communication with VAR possible?
ReplyDeleteMust have var com due to a brief check on a potential villarreal penalty
DeleteHeavy snow in Kyiv and already a pitch invasion for Umut Meler.
ReplyDeleteMissed push in back of Ronaldo at 21'.
ReplyDelete38' a penalty appeal by Dynamo Kyiv, the player is hit from behind by defender, the contact is very soft, in my opinion rather play on, I wouldn't like a so easy penalty. I agree with VAR, they supported referee.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Chefren. The attacker himself puts his foot in front of the opponent and initiates the contact to get a penalty. So, it was a good call by VAR to support the referee decision and no intervention in Dynamo Kyiv 38’.
DeleteNo foul called for Lindeloff at 38' hitting Villareal player with his knee after clearing the ball. Commentators said, "I'm not sure he could pull out of that," and "He's already into his clearance." But we've seen many penalty kicks given for players kicking other players after kicking the ball with their follow through. Frankly, I like Brych's interpretation better.
ReplyDeleteRed kit for Brych and team looks sharp. Brych has short sleeves and AR2 has long sleeves, so I assume UEFA has no rule about matching sleeve lengths.
ReplyDeletePenalty incident from Dynamo Kyiv - Bayern München
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/PJ7y9
I thought Brych was a bit inconsistent in the first half but good(8.4) in the second half. Foul detection a bit odd in the first 25-30 minutes or so. All in all a good performance.
ReplyDeleteHandball before Chelsea goal, not from the scorer, but player who played ball before. VAR confirmed the goal.
ReplyDeleteneither "immediate" nor "punishable offense"...to be "immediate" ruediger must have scored the goal by himself. to be a "punishable offense", i think the arm is neither in unnatural position (close to body) nor making the body unnaturally bigger...so right onfield decision can easily and quickly be supported by var...
DeleteBenfica goal disallowed but replays are inconclusive whether the ball was out of play or not
ReplyDeleteActually there is not a single replay showing the ball was out of replay. It can seriously turn into a crucial mistake.
Delete*Out of play
DeleteHighly controversial call from Karasev Team at Camp Nou disallowing a Benfica goal. AR 2 indicated ball slightly slipped out of the pitch from a corner.
ReplyDeleteNo conclusive replay was shown, but my first impression is that the ball went out thus it should have been disallowed.
Deletehttps://twitter.com/GoalEspana/status/1463246290591043595?s=20
DeleteI don't clearly see the ball out of play.
DeleteThis call can be "controversial" only for a die hard Benfica fan. Ball went clearly out and was approved by VAR.
DeleteBut if technology can not deliver any proof, I think the call should stay as it was on field: so no goal is fine for me. AR2 hat the better sight than any of the replays.
DeleteI'm not a die-hard Benfica fan at all. "Clearly out"? Where exactly do you see the ball "clearly out"? Now, by the same token, I call you a die-hard Barcelona or Karasev fan. You gotta be kidding me. By the way, the fact that it was validated by VAR doesn't mean it was a correct decision.
DeleteI think Rob’s comment is out of place. There’s no single angle proving the ball crossed the goal line. The ball was positioned 1 meter from the goal line in the corner arc, which means it can have a swing of 1 meter in the direction of the goal line and still not completely cross the goal line. And AR2 was not positioned optimally, could not make a 100% valid judgment.
DeleteBut having said that, without any other, more conclusive images, the on-field decision was correctly confirmed by VAR-officials IMO.
https://twitter.com/cruyffstyle1/status/1463250077401636871/photo/1
DeleteHowever, AR2 was badly positioned...
DeleteKarasev had serious troubles with Sporting in Gelsinkirchen in 2014...and now what looks like a big mistake disallowing Benfica goal. I guess Portuguese association is not happy.
ReplyDeleteNonsense comment. Correctly disallowed.
DeleteShow me proof it was correctly disallowed or the nonsense is yours :)
DeleteLille - Salzburg
ReplyDelete35' - reckless-SFP by Seiwald in front of the fourth official; quite late reaction by Taylor (YC given) as most likely he was discussing the incident with 4OF/AR1
Need to rewatch again, but at first glance a penalty by Treimanis looks like a foul by attacker on keeper than the contrary, VAR confirmed.
ReplyDeletePK for me.
DeleteClear penalty + YC for me too. Correct decision.
DeleteRewatched it, indeed penalty, I was wrong, I had the perception that attacker had deliberately stepped on keeper, but it is the contrary, foul by keeper. One of the replays deceived me.
DeleteIMO penalty
DeleteThe proof that the ball actually went out in FCB-BEN. Correctly disallowed and goal-kick call by Karasev and AR2 Gavrilin.

https://twitter.com/cruyffstyle1/status/1463250077401636871
DeleteThis one shows another thing!
My point is one cannot disallow a goal when it so hard to definitely hold that the ball went out play.
Benefit of doubt should always be given to attacking side.
Can we be sure it isn't a fake? Nowadays everything is possible, having a perfect picture for assessing ball out seems to be something very... extra-ordinary.
DeleteAnd to clarify, I absolutely don't write that for going against the Russian officials!
If true and real picture, excellent decision by AR2.
Indeed fakes have started, don't trust anything :)
DeleteCompare the Twitter photos posted by Quilava and Anonymous 22:20. Those pics are EXACTLY identical, except for the position of the ball.
DeleteHow would that be possible… :)
I think in case of "out" or "not out" decisions, with the ball being in the air, VAR has no good angles to be 100 % sure. They have to confirm the decision on the pitch and trust the AR as there is no evidence. We had some similar incidents in Bundesliga, VAR has never overruled the referee and AR1, while the checks have always been rather quick.
DeleteSituations like that never get overruled by VAR. VAR can never be sure if the ball really was out of play, so has to trust the ARs.
DeleteOnly way VAR can actually decide on a situation like that is when it's covered by the GLT-camera.
How can the assistant choose to run even before the ball is played? That's a school boy error. He must know that he need to stay at the line until he is sure if the ball is in play or not. He had no clue there if it was.
DeleteDude, you know this can be manipulated, right? :)
ReplyDelete@Quilava
DeleteVery soft second penalty for Zenit and whats even more shocking Treimanis didn't whistle it, it was VAR initiative. Thats not what we want VAR to do for sure.
ReplyDeleteWell it was arm to face, so IMO clearly supportable to give that penalty. For me even the expected decision there.
DeleteBut some room for discussion indeed, whether it was clear enough for VAR intervention.
Player jumped naturally and the attacker chose to run into his arm. Not a foul.
DeleteYeah it wasn't like defender elbowed Dzyuba, it was a natural movement of the arm while jumping. And no force at all it was just a touch.
DeleteCuneyt Cakir is still very much one of the best referees in the world.
ReplyDeleteGROUP G is anybody's game. Hot clashes on the cards on final matchday.
ReplyDeleteMakkelie, maybe Orsato?
DeleteI think Makkelie on Atalanta-Villareal
DeleteMakkelie quite sure for Atalanta - Villarreal, a group full of German referees and he never appeared there so far.
DeleteThe refs for Poule G (MD6) are not easy to predict. The most sensible options already officiated a game in this group.
DeleteI think Jovanovic could be happy with his performance tonight in London. Interesting situation (handball) before first goal. For me correct decision. Players helped him with their behaviour, so he didn't have hard job. Good foul detection and management. He didn't whistle minor fouls and gave some good advantages.
ReplyDeleteOverall, expected level.
Great onside by AR1 before fourth goal.
Very poor performance from Siebert tonight, not at his average level
ReplyDeleteAnd in general Malmö FF should be very aggrieved at refereeing. Clear penalty in their favour in the first half not whistled, could have been more red cards for Zenit and 2 very soft penalties whistled in favour of Zenit. Or you can say, first one was 50/50 and second one just ridiculous in my view.
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch the game by Siebert Young Boys - Atalanta but a very poor performance is reported by Italian side, in particular a penalty to be whistled with VAR silent, I will try to post videos soon.
ReplyDeleteAgree, I was at the stadium and seemed clear. Also very poor management of foul detection and cards management. Anyway he is a good referee and will have some more chanches in UCL. Next time please no more Dankert as VAR, he is always silent
DeleteI have to disagree. Siebert had a good performance and there was no clear penalty situation. It seems normal that every referee's performance is poor if the Italian team doesn't win according to Italian newspapers.
DeleteIndeed Anonymous you are right, I will check the game and give my opinion. The same criticisms are reported for Jovanovic, first and fourth goal to be annulled, the first goal, it is written, for holding (not the handball) while the fourth for a clear foul.
DeleteChelsea - Juventus:
DeleteFirst Goal
https://streamja.com/vEaQN
The action by Jorginho on Bonucci could have been indeed whistled, you can see it in the last seconds of video, but it is difficult to perceive it as clear and obvious mistake, in a more general context, this call by VAR would be something isolated from the context and I fully agree with the decision to support referee.
Fourth Goal
https://streamja.com/V3qrQ
I agree with VAR in supporting this goal, not a clear and obvious mistake.
I think Chelsea’s first goal should have been disallowed and VAR-intervention required. The ball bounced to Rudigers hand which is upwards and out from the body, a punishable handball beyond the “undeliberate handballs immediately before a goal”
DeleteI guess Italian Media is talking about the 34' situation? The defender plays the ball only marginally but I agree with Siebert in that situation. Not enough for a penalty.
DeleteThere also was a penalty appeal by YB in 28' but that was even less of a foul imo.
Dominik, yes, clips will follow soon.
DeleteAny comments about Cakir's performance?
ReplyDeleteHere some situations from Siebert game Young Boys - Atalanta.
ReplyDeleteI must say that all the protests and the "scandal" by Italian press and fans are once again wrong. Siebert had surely points for improvements, but I think his performance was close to expected level. More interesting than the very discussed penalty appeal in 33' is surely the possible RC in 43', but I think that VAR was OK in this case in supporting referee. The replay shows something very close to a SFP, but the point of contact is low. However, it is definitely more than a step on foot and RC would have been appropriate if issued by referee.
Regarding the penalty appeal in 33' I think that Dominik explained it correctly: at first player touched slightly the ball then there was a contact with opponent, but not a full one, VAR can't definitely intervene there. It was not a challenge directly on the attacker. Maybe more appropriate for Italian standards (I try to explain this point of view) to give penalty than play on, but in my opinion absolutely correcy by VAR to support. And this can't be still accepted by fans who are in trouble when they must understand how VAR works.

IMO:
Delete28' No PK, even a YC for simulation possible
33' I think no penalty is the much better option, ball touched first, then clearly played the second time.
43' I prefer a YC, as the contact is low, a normal running motion and just unlucky
47' Should be a YC
53' Would be a raher soft penalty. I would not give it and no VAR stuff. Atacker wants to go down.
75' YC would be ok, but if not I would like a warning issued.
Thanks for the clips Chefren :)
About 33' It is quite tricky. Technically the first touch is not enough and then the foul happens. If you look forensically at it, it is a PK. As after the foul it doesn't matter what happens. But in my experience, if after a little trip the defender directly plays the ball, it is still considered a good challenge. I'm not sure what football expects here.
DeleteIMO:
Delete28' - an absolutely normal football situation as football is a contact sport by presumption and definition - the defender is holding for a breef second the attacker but it is not a reason for the theatrical fall;
33' - a blatant penalty; I can separate the situation in three parts - first the defender slightly toches the ball but the atacker is still in control and possesion with a good opportunity for a goal; after that the defender is clearly tripping the attacker with his knee and only then he plays the ball again; so I think that the first "clean" part is actually irrelevant because the attacker was still in control;
43' - a very unlucky accident - YB player is clearly with his eyes up just following the movement by the Italian and he didn't see his leg;
47' - not a yellow for me; although I am extremely annoyed when referees do not show mandatory cards, here I think it is far from mandatory - first it is obvious that the defender tried to avoid the contact but the dribble was too surprising and second for sure not a SPA because there were still many defenders between the attacker and the goal;
53' - again an absolutely football situation - many contacts but nothing malicious or clearly wrong;
75' - not a SPA, not a reckless tacckle - so no yellow is perfectly fine
Thanks for the clips, Chefren!
Regarding 43':
DeleteLaw 12 says: "A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent [...] must be sanctioned as serious foul play."
IMO the Bern player is neither commiting a challenge nor a tackle. He is just running behind the Italian, so it cannot be SFP. Also he doesn't use excessive force.
Therefore IMO it is not a RC also by the book. I think considering his actions as reckless is a sensible decision.
I agree with Siebert in all his decisions. Well done
DeleteThank you for all the hard dedicated work :)
ReplyDeleteRegarding the 43' one (possible RC): it is for sure a nasty foul, however YC is also supportable for me, in particular because of the intention of the YB player. He obvsiously had not the intention to hurt the Atalanta player. In replay, you can see that he is following the ball with his eyes and then (most likely) accidently stepped on the foot. If it was a clear deliberate stamp, then clear RC for me.
28' Penalty appeal
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/z6vhps
- no penalty, missed YC for diving
33' Penalty appeal
https://streamable.com/488ecg
- missed penalty, defender misses the initial contact and trips Atalanta attacker
- also it seems like an intentional back pass, so in case of play-on, indirect FK for the away team should have been awarded
43' Possible RC
https://streamable.com/xw6g8j
- Mandatory RC here without a doubt. The argument with the point of contact is nonsense, the foul should be assessed by it's gravity and intensity and this is a leg breaking challenge (Zappacosta had to be substituted at HT).
- This double standard is one of the stupidest aspects of "modern" refereeing. Here's an example from Huddersfield vs West Brom, where the Baggies skipper was sent off without even touching his opponent, only because the point of 'contact' was high.
https://youtu.be/EZZ9QKwu1WI?t=469
- I am asking you, which of the fouled players was hurt the most???
47' Possible YC
https://streamable.com/azucyl
- Clear YC, wrong decision again
53' Penalty appeal
https://streamable.com/f0ruvq
- More penalty than not, but supportable decision in the end
75' Possible YC
https://streamable.com/bh1wf8
- Cynical foul, ball had already passed the home player, missed YC.
Regarding 43'...
DeleteI'm not sure why a comparison to the Hurddersfield example is warranted at all. They are two completely different types of incidents. Also, it's not like a bunch of people here have said it's a great decision (indeed, on top of not being part of the discussion, it's impossible to see the point of contact). We should take all incidents on their individual merits.
Here, I think it's nonsense to say this is a "mandatory" red card. The player's eyes are always on the ball. It appears he's not even making a "challenge" so to speak. He misplaces his foot and, unfortunately, steps on the ankle of his opponent as he slips to the ground.
If this was an actual tackle or challenge, of course it is a red card--for violent conduct! But common sense must prevail. The actual behavior--showing complete disregard for his opponent--is the definition of "reckless," which is a yellow card. There's no excessive force here as he's simply stepping where he would normally step.
So we're left with "endangering the safety of an opponent." You seem to be arguing because the player was hurt, it's a red card. That simply cannot be the standard or we will always be punishing players based on results, which is not in the Laws (and also down to luck quite a bit!). Did the actions of the player inherently endanger the opponent's safety or was this more of a freak accident, the result of reckless play?
I understand why you or others might want this to be a red card based on result and appearance. But I think common sense tells most observers--from neutral fans to the players on the field--that this is not a red card offence.
Happy to see that someone agree this was not the best match for siebert. Anyway a very challeging game indeed I must say
