Marciniak being rewarded for good performances with continuous appointments. Great to see. Straight forward game but he’s back in the top top elite group
ReplyDeleteYes when a referee is in a good form, committee appoints him almost for all games. That's basically good, because form is rewarded, but on the other hand, this also means that maybe there aren't so many different options? ;)
DeleteI expected Marciniak on one of the 5 clashes between nr’s 1 and 2 in the standings. But this is indeed a very good appointment. The match can be an emotional one. Must win for Spain that is still fighting for the nr. 1 spot.
DeleteAgree with Chefren. The top of elite seems very narrow. I wonder how many referees are considered as a 100% ‘safe pair of hands’ at the moment.
Marciniak getting Greece a second time in this campaign after GRE-GEO seems rather avoidable.
DeletePhilipp S, absolutely.
DeleteThe second match is Sweden instead of Spain :)
ReplyDeleteYes, sorry!
DeleteSo we have the debut of Ivana Martinčić in Men's Senior National Teams, not a too long time after the under 21 game Latvia - San Marino. It is early to make a deep analysis, but at first glance it looks like she is having a quicker path than the other women we saw in past. I still need to watch her in a challenging game, I think that this one in Wolfsburg will be not so much helpful in this regard.
ReplyDeleteThe "easy on paper" games for teams that on next matchday will have crucial games will be handled by referee from the classic "Lower Elite - Upper Category 1" zone: Gozubuyuk in Georgia, Aytekin in Malta...
Particular to see Italian VARs with a Spanish crew. Maybe there will be other Spanish appointments on next days.
Gil Manzano with an important clash in Ireland, surely a step above the previously mentioned games, but very similar because still important only for Portuguese side, then the biggest appointment will come for Portugal - Serbia.
Yes, Ivana Martinčić with a very surprising appointment. 2 appointments in Croatian 1st league (many in 2nd league though) , one international u21 and now this. Good luck to her and her team!
DeleteFirst time to see Austrian VARs in international competitions. Austria started to implement this technology very late - it seems that UEFA considers our current experience with it as sufficient enough (at least for a meaningless match).
ReplyDeleteMatch Ireland-Portugal
ReplyDeleteRefere from Spain it is a conflict of interest.
Why so? Because another Spaniard refereed IRL-SRB in September?

No problems for JESUS Gil
It would be the same if Portugal-Serbia judges came from Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina
DeleteSuch matches should not be judged by referees from a neighboring state and the same language.
@Uros, why? That doesn't make any sense at all.
DeletePortugal and Spain have been everything but friends over the centuries. Portugal - Spain is the oldest border in Europe and one of the oldest in the world. They were actually quite bitter rivals.
True Gil Manzano is from a town near the Portuguese border (Don Benito) but that is absolutely irrelevant of course.
For instance, Kuipers also lives near the German border and that has never been an impediment for him to get games involving German teams or German national team. And I could go on and on with several other examples.
How can the Spanish referee be in an important match for Portugal?
DeleteWhy not from Italy, France, Germany, Russia, etc.?
I don't like it. Judges must be from other parts of Europe ...
@Uros, OMG, are you serious?
DeleteSame language? Portuguese and Spanish are different languages. They're both Latin-based but different ones indeed. So Italian and French cannot be appointed for POR-SERB either? Because French and Italian derive from Latin too.
The reality in the Iberian Peninsula is quite different from tne one in the Balkans where different countries share the same language.
In Spain, ALONE, there are 3 languages: Castilian (Spanish), Catalan and Basque. Maybe you should study a little bit more and stop making up conspiracy theories.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
DeleteWhat about Skomina, who is from a town close to the Italian border? How many games from Italy and Italian teams did he officiate throughout his career? Furthermore, he's a very fluent speaker of Italian.
DeleteDon't worry about the assignment. It's ever so uncontroversial.
Nothing to do with, for example, Russia-Ukraine, Balkan countries or Armenia-Azerbaijan
@Uros, can you demonstrate a pattern of Spanish refs helping Portugal?
DeleteI guess that is something unheard of in European football and on this blog as well :)
Uros,
DeleteI can understand your point about geographical proximity but POR-ESP relations are not comparable to, take, CROA-SERB or BHZ-SER.
I only have one thing to say:
DeleteProença (Portuguese) handled EURO 2012 final (ESP-ITA) just after Spain defeated Portugal in SFs.
Also, I remember that Portuguese Tiago Martins refereed ESP-GEO in September window without problem.
You have written double Michal Obukowicz - as AR2 and FO. The FO is Damian Sylwestrzak.
ReplyDeleteOT: If anyone is bored over the next couple of days with no top level football, then there is a blast from the past which you can enjoy. Even if you haven't the faintest interesting in World Cup 1986, the videos clips are worth watching just to see how much it has changed. Any engagement on the content is most welcome!
ReplyDeletewc86refs.blogspot.com
Wc86 was the first I remember, taking an active interest in the referees.
DeleteI believe George Courtney refereed the 3rd/4th place match
Thank you, Mikael, a pleasure as always
DeleteFIGC revealed Italy's appointments, as one could have easily guessed, Taylor will officiate the game in Rome, Italy - Switzerland. Attwell confirmed as VAR. Very important game for him after the discussions in CL. Unless the info on FIGC site is not updated, he will be there.
ReplyDeleteKovacs for NIR - ITA in Belfast, VAR Dankert (GER).
Attwell also had a high profile decision in England on Sunday, Liverpool v West Ham as VAR. called it correctly IMO however he’ll be hoping for a quiet night in Rome
DeletePredictable!
DeleteWho do you guys think will referee PORTUGAL-SERBIA and CROATIA-RUSSIA on the last matchday? Both these games are going to be critical.
ReplyDeleteBrych and Orsato?
DeleteBrych impossible for both Serbia and Russia due to WC issues he had... and I'm firm on my idea that he will not used for such games, being at the end of career. He got Porto - Milan, as somebody underlined here some days ago, just because there was a need of a big name for an Italian team. But I think we wont see him in charge of big games anymore in these last weeks as FIFA referee...
DeleteMaybe:
DeletePOR - SRB: Orsato
CRO - RUS: Mateu Lahoz
SWE - SPA : no clue…
Maybe Hategan?
DeletePortugal x Serbia Cuneyt Cakir It should be a quite heated game
DeleteCroatia x Russia Daniele Orsato
Spain x Sweden Slavko Vincic
The 5 big games mentioned already in a post earlier are: ITA - SUI; POR - SRB; SWE - ESP; CRO - RUS; NED - NOR;
DeleteSo far we know Taylor and Turpin are in charge for 2 of them. In the rest of these matches we will see 100% some of these names: Orsato, Makkelie, Mateu Lahoz, Hategan, Vincic and less likely Cakir and Brych
Makkelie IMPOSSIBLE for POR-SERB after the infamous no-goal incident in Belgrade in March.
Delete@Anonymous I guess we don't see any duplicate appointments. Most likely we see a ref on POR-SRB who hasn't officated these teams earlier this year. Orsato would be a sensible choice to me, also based on politics.
DeleteCRO-RUS isn't easy to predict.
Hategan and Mateu Lahoz recently officiated Russia and/or Croatia. Vincic also not likely as a Slovenian to officiate Croatia.
Who remains?
Cakir? Maybe Makkelie (if not injured) or still Brych (?)
Dutch media report Del Cerro Grande for Montenegro - Netherlands and Turpin for Netherlands - Norway.
ReplyDeleteThis time Del Cerro without a big game, but rather a low profile one, still very important for NED national team, but an easy win is expected there... the Spanish is not at the top in recent times.
DeleteTurpin back in Rotterdam… last game it became very apparent that there are a lot of Feyenoord fans there and that they still value ‘club issues’ (Berghuis was booed despite playing for ‘their’ country), so hopefully all goes well, because Feyenoord - Roma definitely hasn’t been forgotten yet.
DeleteChefren, even though Montenegro has no chances anymore, I'd not say "an easy win is expected there". I'd also assign an elite ref for that game: the Netherlands are still not qualified, plus the atmosphere in the Balkans is always challenging.
DeleteI agree about that, but clearly Del Cerro had got more sonorous games in recent times and he was expected to handle a very decisive game... but it seems as only Mateu Lahoz will do that.
Delete@jleekens Feyenoord - Roma times are really far back in past, it was the first Turpin, a very unexperienced referee, with a too early promotion to Elite, if you ask me. After that, an impressive development with excellent assignments, and he became one of the best UEFA Elite referees.
@Jleekens indeed Turpin not the Ref with the most ‘clean’ history in the Netherlands. We still remember Feyenoord-Roma and also Ajax-Valencia, therefore I’m a bit surprised by this appointment.
DeleteI just hope he will be a bit more lenient than in the Barcelona-Kiev game lately, where he wasn’t able to let the game flow and often fooled by theatre.
@Chefren, I agree with you, don’t get me wrong. But yes, as @Unknown said, Turpin is not popular in the Netherlands, Feyenoord - Roma is still remembered and also several Ajax games, and this view has been ‘confirmed’ by Denmark - Russia at the EUROs, which gained quite some coverage here. I know it’s a long time ago, but if you (in the eyes of Dutch fans) really screw up (Turpin with Feyenoord or Rocchi with Ajax), you get the ‘Italian media treatment’ and it will be remembered for a very long time, I’m really not sure about this choice by committee.
DeleteAs an example, if a questionable decision is made in France, the headline would be ‘weird penalty / RC in France’. If Turpin does it, the headline would be ‘Turpin decides game again’, so there’s basically no way for Turpin to show his development to the general public that isn’t interested in referees.
DeleteBoania and Herzegovina - Finland will be a hot clash. A lot at stake. Curious to learn the appointment!
ReplyDelete14th November
ReplyDeleteMalta-Slovakia
Referee: Fran Jović (CRO)

AR2: Bojan Zobenica (CRO)
4th: Dario Bel (CRO)
VAR: Duje Strukan (CRO)
AVAR: Mario Zebec (CRO)

Strange appointment, theoretically this match can be important for Croatia. If Croatia finishes second then their seeded status in the play-offs may depend on whether Cyprus or Malta get 5th place (only matches against top 5 count in this instance).
DeleteI watched AUS-KSA, refereed by Ko Hyung-Jin (KOR). I was very impressed with his style, he is completely unmoved by theatrics / protests from the players and he doesn’t simply give the soft, easy foul to get himself out of tough situations. There are a number of situations where players went down easily in non-threatening free kick positions, and the easy / low-risk decision for the referee would have been to blow for the foul, but he hasn’t fallen for any of that. He is the one making the decisions, not the players. And I appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was a fairly challenging game at that, lots of tempers pretty high. Well done!
First FK of the game should have been a caution for reckless (studs on foot). Were three injuries in the second half totalling 4 minutes of time plus 4 stoppages for subs and the total additional time at the end of the second half? 3 minutes.

Barton and ELFath have been appointed for the top clashed in CONCACAF, the 1st one with USA-Mexico (Difficult to miss them in Qatart (with a mexican).
Al Jassim is from host country, so quite sure to me
More difficult to predict CAF referees.
I would like to have some comments / info by the experts of confederation outside Europe.
QUESTION: Does Anybody know about the FIFA stage in Qatar running begin of November ? I heard that after the female referees, some prospective officials form CAF, AFC and OFCF will gather in Qatar during these days. Any info, news ? List of attendees ? Thanks
I'm a bit amazed that Jair Marrufo (USA) has not had a WCQ appearance in this round yet. I used to think that there was a very good chance of the USA sending two referees to Qatar, but Elfath has 3 now in this round to Marrufo's 0... the first two of them involved Mexico so Marrufo would have been unable to have those games, but now with the third I have to wonder if Marrufo is no longer in contention. It's a shame, I think Marrufo is a terrific ref.
DeleteJair is working MD8 in Costa Rica.
DeleteHis omission from the earlier rounds has been, at least in part, due to a planned holiday around one of the international windows. I think, also, that there is a feeling that Elfath needs/deserves to be tested in qualifying in a way that Marrufo doesn't (Marrufo has worked qualifiers since the 2010 round--this is Elfath's first time).
Also, it's worth noting that the long-standing prohibition on Jair working competitive Mexico matches has been lifted, from my understanding. That said, when Elfath is available as an American alternative, it might not be something that is pushed.
There is a lot of conflicting information within the US as to whether both Marrufo and Elfath can go to Qatar as referees or if Elfath will go as a referee and Marrufo is VMO-only. There's evidence for both arguments. I personally think both will go as on-field referees, but anyone who says they are certain about the outcome is, I believe, lying.
One thing to keep an eye on is that FIFA has asked Rockwell, one of his ARs who is already 47, to stand down from consideration. So it seems like Katy Nesbitt will complete Jair's trio with Frank Anderson. It was originaly going to be Barwagen of Canada, but he's been folded into Herndadez's (MEX) team.
Long story short, don't worry about Marrufo. He is still in the mix for refereeing in Qatar and is guaranteed to attend the tournament in some capacity.
One other point... I don't think Barton's appointment on USA-Mexico guarantees a WC spot. In fact, I'm CERTAIN it doesn't. Walter Lopez got it last cycle and he missed out, after all!
DeleteYou've got to remember that US and Mexican referees cannot work that match. So you are inherently taking the #3 or lower referee on those two matches.
This cycle, if Elfath, Marrufo and one Mexican referee all go to the WC, that leaves only one CONCACAF spot (if only one American goes, then there are two CONCACAF spots).
The bottom line is that Escobar, Barton and Martinez are competiting for 1 or 2 spots. So when they get these matches (Escobar will almost certainly get the return fixture) it is still a test for WC consideration.
Apparently, FIFA decided that it will be one USA referee on the field and one USA referee in the VAR room in Qatar.
DeleteAnd... you're sure of this or just speculating?
DeleteBecause some very important people believe that's true. While other very important people say it's not.
Both Marrufo and Elfath went to the seminar in Qatar recently with ARS accompanying them, so they were there as referee candidates and not as VMO-only candidates. If a decision HAS been made that there is one referee and one VMO, then it seems like the decision over which one is which has not been made.
But again, I think the possibility for two Americans being on field is still very real. To relegate Marrufo to VMO status, you'd have to essentially say two out of Escobar, Martinez and Barton are better. I like Barton. But to say two of them would perform better than Marrufo on-field in Qatar is fanciful.
Thank you for the information usaref, I agree with all your points.
DeleteI am sad about Rockwell, if your information is correct. He's a fantastic AR and definitely one who I root for.
Information comes straight from Rockwell, so it's correct!
DeleteAnd yes, he's an excellent AR and a wonderful person. It's an unfortunate decision from FIFA, but at least he got to go to one WC and work on the field.
RC by Schüttengruber looks to be a very correct decision for SFP.
ReplyDeletehttps://ibb.co/jHQ3g6j

Delete100% RC
Shocking challenge, player lost control, this is rather an attack than an attempt to play ball. I feel really sorry for the player who was fouled. I never hope to see anything like that.
DeleteGood-expected performance by SG in GEOSWE, players were focused on playing.
ReplyDeleteThe only important scene was a handball penalty appeal in 41:20 but unfortunately replays shown by broadcaster were of a very poor quality, impossible to judge.

Penalty by José María Sánchez Martínez, ARM - MKD:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/N3dZe
IMO correct penalty, defender stops the attacker unfairly.
DeleteI wonder whether this is a YC or a RC? Because it's a DOGSO case I think and the player doesn't *really* attempts to play the ball.. Probably my argumentation isn't within the current use of the rule, but still.
Okay, now I have to correct myself; the player's foot movement doesn't justify a RC in the sense of the LotG I think.
DeleteYC with an attempt to play the ball is the correct outcome
DeleteGood performance by Sánchez Martínez in Yerevan - after a couple of early warnings for slightly 'agricultural' fouls, the players got the message and the Spaniard had no problems at all. Both penalties were correctly awarded (missed YC for DOGSO in arguably both, definitely the first). In general, the game was as easy as 0-5 suggests :).
ReplyDeleteVideo clips:

89' - penalty given to MKD (tripping); sanction?
https://streamable.com/th83l5
Thanks for the clips! I liked your definition of the early fouls as "agricultural", it is absolutely clear what you mean, despite the possible language barrier. :)
DeleteI think that Sánchez Martínez reacted very well, especially the third foul, minute 5', very convincing awareness by referee, warning the player.
I don't understand what happened in 15'.
About the penalties: in 65' in my opinion we have a DOGSO scenario, without foul, player would have easily controlled the ball having the chance to score, the intervention by defender can be still read as "desperate" attempt to play ball, he puts leg, especially looking at the closer replay, you can't be 100% sure that he is targeted only on stopping opponent, so YC correct, and more generally the trend in such situations is always to issue YC. RC must be only when 100% clear that defender is acting only in order to stop opponent, but some situations are indeed very difficult to read. Was the player booked by referee in this case?
89': here clear attempt to play ball, I would accept both YC and no card, I think there can be different readings for this action (DOGSO or SPA), basically, being so close to net, one could say DOGSO, but the position, not central, with a defender coming, would also suggest SPA. For "modern" refereeing, this can be given without card, "old times" DOGSO YC :D I would go for YC.
I was confused at the time about 15' but I finally worked it out:
Delete- someone in the crowd brought a whistle to the stadium (Fox40 Classic) and blew it when the ball was in flight
- this seemed to confuse some players a bit, and they slightly stopped
- realising that the game hadn't stopped, the Armenia goalkeeper tries to prevent a corner, but fails
- Cabañero Martínez must indicate the ball out of play, and now we can hear SM's whistle (Sonik Blast) to signal a corner
- SM goes over to the Armenia coach (no delegate) and tells him, to tell the neferious whistling spectator to stop
- referee decides that there was no outside interference which put the players off, so instead of a dropped ball from where the ball was at the whistling moment, we restarted from a corner (which nothing came of)
- we didn't hear that whistle from the crowd again
-> I hope I explained that okay :D
This reminded me IRLCRO at EURO 2012 where Björn Kuipers faced similar trouble, but on multiple occasions during his 1H.
I think Sánchez Martínez managed it fine, but maybe a dropped ball was a 'safer' option and if MKD scored from the corner, it might have controversial.
I see. This situation happened several times in serie A as well, but not in recent times. Better to restart play with dropped ball, I agree, to avoid all possible controversy.
DeleteVery good performance by Gözübüyük in GEOSWE. Not much challenged regarding management of players, etc. but technically he did very well.
ReplyDeleteGER-LIE: Correct penalty + RC (SFP) by Martincic in 10'
ReplyDeleteVery clear RC for SFP.
Deletehttps://streamff.com/v/d79a05
She was holding just a yellow at first I noticed. Wonder what changed her mind?
DeleteI think all the things she heard and saw right there were enough for her to change her decision. It must have been clear for Martincic that there must have been a contact between studs and upper body and that the intensitiy was rather high and that is normally easily enough for e RC. Good for her to send the player off even if she already had the YC out.
DeleteAgree with the decision but it's unfortunate for the game that it had to be RC. Clearly no intent and the player broke his fall immediately after.
ReplyDeleteI note YC out at first then changed to RC - VAR advice or AR?
VAR can't be involved before a final decision is taken!
DeleteEither she changed idea or AR1 advice.
We all know the procedure... And we all see time and time again that some referee don't follow it. Someone must be very naive to think that it wasn't a VAR intervention here.
Delete@chefren: i think all three options are possible :-) she had the yellow card out way too early. probably she saw it was red, when she looked at goretzka. or there was input from ar1. i would highly doubt that...formally, you are right var would not be allowed to intervene...but i think in this case it looked very much to be an "informal" advice. you should free yourself from believing in formal-procedures too much...
DeleteTo be honest, I think that VAR use must be always according to protocol. This has been a battle by Rosetti & Co. since the introduction of this technology. A referee must be always decide and then VAR can intervene only in case of clear and obvious mistakes. The conversations field officials - VAR are recorded, so the committee can know when it is not used in a proper way. I really tend to believe that such referees at a so high level are very strict with protocol, I can ensure that if in Italy you do something like that, you are suspended, now with Rocchi even clearer. He said that he wants to see referees deciding by themselves. If you allow such "advices" by VAR, then explain me why only in some situations and not oher cases, because then we could use it always being worried of taking pitch decisions... in this case she should have shown YC and then VAR would have intervened, very easy. Let me be naive in this regard because I wouldn't accept to know that some referees go against protocol and committees agree on that!
DeleteDon’t you guys know this conversation are recorded??? VAR can not input until the referee has taken his or her decision!!! This isn’t Sunday league matches being played here where foul throw can be forgiven or protocols not fully adhered too, or spectators can come and act as referee because the main referee is injured, this is intentional stage and if you have followed European refereeing over time you will know that VAR doesn’t input. Protocols are respected to the highest especially as it is always recorded and then analyzed.
DeleteNo, Chiagozie... You are completely wrong. The only records that stay after the games are the records of the official VAR reviews. Nothing stays from the conversations in the VAR room or any informal help in the ears of the pitch official. And Chefren, as for the situation in Italy - you must be jocking. There was just one official request for a record to be opened and it misteriously happened that it is lost.
DeleteBetween 10th and 15th minute correctly disallowed two goals on Malta-Croatia (1 for MAL, 1 for CRO).
ReplyDeleteGreat decisions by ARs.
Correctly disallowd goal by AR1 in Athens, now a penalty by Marciniak to Spain. In my opinion very soft if not wrong, but VAR should support.
ReplyDeleteThats a very soft penalty for Spain. I would say even absurd, VAR should have overruled it.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen one replay. Very hard to tell from that angle. For me it looks though that the Spanish player is the first one into the situation and if so I think it has to be a penalty
Deletehttps://streamja.com/BBZeg
DeleteMaybe there is a soft touch by Greek player, but this is definitely a very soft penalty!
I wouldn't have whistled it.
After watching it again I think this shouldn't be a penalty. Not sure if it's VAR stuff though
DeleteI prefer not to whistle, less than "supportive" but I can't say it is wrong
DeleteThe falling of the ESP player is clearly exaggerated, I think Marciniak didn't recognize the exact kind of contact, because it's rather a little side contact; but it could look like a more intense hit from another perspective.
DeleteIn the end, the GRE player being late in the duel and the contact existing are enough for the VAR not to interfer here I think. Play-on is the much better choice indeed but I struggle to find evidence for a clear error.
Clear unnatural handball by the Spanish player before too.
DeleteSuper, super soft penalty awarded to Spain, to say the least. Iñigo Martinez is already falling before a natural contact. VAR should have intervened.
DeleteMarciniak, again, in a bad light when it looked like he was bouncing back.
Yellow card to IRL no.20 for a strike in the view of AR Prieto (28'). Worth rewatching, I wonder if VC was even in sight here.
ReplyDeleteKeeping an eye on events in Dublin - rather missed YC for SPA/LoR holding to Paulinha (46'), then correct caution to Coleman (54') later.
DeleteAnd now a correct SYC to Pepe for striking (81').
DeleteCorrect defensive freekick to Portugal, no goal to ROI; Gil Manzano might have waited to whistle for another couple of seconds to avoid another 'Bastien case', though (+94').
DeleteHow was that a correct defensive Freekick???? Even with the level of how Goalkeepers are protected that is no where enough for a foul on the goalie, as a matter of fact the goalie didn’t jump for the ball with his hands and then impeded from doing so.. the call really made me irate. You guys should check it out.
DeleteThe attacker obviously had no interest to fight for the ball - he only wanted to impede the goalkeeper's progress and move into the place that the keeper wanted to go. It's a clear foul. And I thought the same as you Chiagozie before watching the replays.
Delete“The attacker obviously had no interest to fight for the ball” did you see how he controlled the ball with his foot when the ball came down??? That’s a he wanted to do and that was he fighting for the ball.
DeleteOFR in Slovakia - Slovenia for handball penalty:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/gOKaW
Related to that why Slovak player in offside position is not influencing defender and his handball?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion correct by VAR to consider this offside as not still materialized, the ball is rather kicked toward defender who committs this clear handball offense, and then the player in offside comes closer. I don't think that the latter influenced opponent, or in some way forced the defender to make such movement. The "psychological" influence is not valid anymore, there must be a clear action with impact on opponent.
DeleteFor me, yes he was. I don't really understand the intervention from Kalkavan unless the offside was given for the ball hitting the Slovak player (I can't really see if it did from the angles I've got)
DeleteThx for ecplanations
DeleteNo VAR stuff in my opinion. Decision on the field should be supported, either offside or penalty.
DeleteWow! This is a quite complex and interesting situation. For sure no VAR stuff, as the attacker in offside position is so close to the defender and for sure has an impact on him, although there is no real action from the attacker (unless you count the attacker turning his back to the defender and jumping towards him as one) The technical decision, I think both should be supprted, penalty or offside.
DeleteCan someone tell me anything about Martincic performance in GER-LIE? I saw only PK+RC.
ReplyDeleteThere was not much more to say honestly. Very fair match, almost no fouls. I noticed a few correct offside/onside calls by ARs and a possible PK around 70‘ what I would classify as grey area and play-on was supportable I think. And in ca. 85‘ there was a (clearly) wrongly given corner kick, that Martincic took back after german player admitted his final touch on the ball.
DeleteSo a very unchallenging game for her with almost no reasons to whistle anything. The almost only important call was the scene you mentioned which she solved correctly.
In 45', Rüdiger pushed down his opponent's head before a corner. This should have been a 2nd YC (at least) in my opinion.

I am not sure about the last two decision to be honest.
Delete1) Must it be a YC to Pepe? It is surely not wrong as his hand went to the face of the opponent, bur the intensity was very low. Much lower than kn the scene of Ogbene, where I would say it was even borderline to RC… My feeling is that it would have been better to just whistle freekick here..?
2) Would you whistle this action by attacker if the opponent was not the GK but a regular defender? I am quite sure that not. This is a fight for the best position to get the ball and the GK was in the much worse position here… For me a very soft call and in every case with VAR one should wait to make a check possible…
26': I agree with Gil Manzano, would have been a soft whistle.
Delete28': Extremely borderline, in my opinion you can't be 100% sure that it was a deliberate act, but for sure player does nothing to avoid that, he knows that opponent is behind him. In my opinion RC would have been very brave and VAR would have supported, but basically an "extreme YC", I would say, so OK by Gil Manzano. AR was controlling the players, but I think he was rather looking at ball, without having an exact perception of incident.
41': OK to go without card.
46': In this case in my opinion card to be issued, very blatant, unsporting behavior, even in case of normal action and not SPA, YC to be shown for LoR as you suggested.
54': correct YC.
70': correct YC for SPA as well.
72': in my opinion the card for the handball was not needed, there wasn't a clear recipient of the ball, maybe you can talk about a possible SPA, however good spot by referee, not easy to see given the quick change of attacking side. I don't think card was for dissent because Gil Manzano was already picking it before the reaction by Pepe, however the card would have been justified for his behavior, so all in all OK :D. If you manage to know the exact reason for this card...
81': Absolutely correct decision, the classic unfair action by this player who, I must say, too much often, distinguishes himself from the others.
90'+4: A call that is correct and can be supported, however, in VAR era, it would be maybe clever to wait before whistling for such infringments, to see what is about to happen later, so in case VAR can intervene. Having said that, in this case VAR wouldn't have intervened. The decision by Gil Manzano is surely an expected one and no discussions.
So, based on these clips, I didn't watch game, I think that he showed a good performance, with maybe the only point for discussion being represented by first YC to Pepe. I think for what the player did after the call, decision is fully justified, but in my opinion he issued it for the handball. Can be supported, but rather soft and not to be issued, in my opinion. In this case I don't see a LoR in his action, arm is open, but not really blatant, there is surely malice and he does that on purpose, but we saw in past definitely worst situations regarding such kind of infringment.

Peljto's AR2 Lazic missed offside? He is not member of standard crew like Beljo (Ibrisimbegovic is always there in int. matches)
