  1. After the appointments open to Men's Observers for Women's games, now we have also a man as fourth official, Dejan Balažič (SVN).

    2. Regarding Karasev, I was about to appoint him, but:
      1) he can't go in Path A due of Ukraine, not even in the other game of the semifinal, I think.
      2) Russia in Path B
      3) He would officiate Portugal and/or Italy in case, I think there were some discussions on the blog with Barcelona - Benfica game and also some other matches involving Portuguese teams, so maybe this choice will be avoided, I would also add the game Italy - Spain in Nations League, for me no problem, but maybe Italy wouldn't like such choice... I don't see the Russian for all these reasons, but he was indeed a candidate.
On another note, for me it is sure that Siebert will get ITA- MKD, it looks like this specific matching occurred exactly for appointing him! ;)

    1. I think for expected Portugal Italy match we ll see one of the biggest names, Mateu or Makkelie or Taylor.

    2. Hategan with Wales after the red card at Euro is less likely...

    3. @Anty75 I would have pleasure to see again Makkelie with Italy and I strongly wish committee will make this choice, but at moment he is not appointed for this national team since Turkey - Italy at EURO. About Mateu, he handled (the other name was Cakir) the very discussed WC Play-Off Italy - Sweden five years ago, and so differently from Makkelie, still a possible choice in case, the Spanish will be avoided for sure. Taylor indeed possible for the final as other name with Turpin.

@Anoymous I didn't remember about that, so maybe Hategan in another game, but I'm curious to see whether with VAR this time he will get a game after the famous NIR - SUI five years ago...

    4. Taylor with another VAR is possible, surely not Attwell this time again)

  5. If both Italy and Portugal reach to the finals of the play-off… Bloody hell. That would be an Euro final on its own. Of course, not guaranteed that both countries will make it (I certainly don’t consider passionate teams as MKD and TUR as a walkover in an one-off Do-or-Die game).

Hard to predict who COULD handle a big final between Italy and Portugal. Lots of pressure, big interests, two very passionate teams and challenging players.

In that case, they need a very experienced referee, the strongest personality, who a ‘clean’ history in both countries and someone who has showed a TOP level before under similar circumstances.

None of the active names meets all these criteria IMO.
-Mateu Lahoz, Cakir and (to a lesser extent) also Makkelie are names that (mostly) convinced in hot clashes, between big names in the more advanced stages of a tournament. They often had the abilty to show their best level when pressure was high. But they have no ‘clean’ history in either Portugal, Italy (or both). Not gonna happen.

-Anthony Taylor: not always showed his best display in hot clashes, but the past months very decent. Good NL final and both countries wouldn’t complain. But… Just officiated Italy (vs. Switzerland). Not sure they would appoint him again to Italy?

-Turpin: has a good history in both countries, but one of the refs that still needs to convince in a very hot challenging game. He officiated CL KO- return rounds, however ‘on paper’ not the most complicated games (between two very big names). The EL final was one of the least challenging finals I have seen the past years. Moreover, Turpin had some issues to stay strong and show his best on end tournaments (EC/WC) when the pressure is immense.

POR-ITA would be hard to predict. My conclusion is that only Taylor or Turpin would be available for this game.
If POR-ITA make it to the final, I hope to see Turpin, mostly because I’m curious to see him in such an important and challenging game. It’s time to show it and I take all my words back if he succeeds.

But yes, let’s first watch ITA-MKD/POR-TUR.
I’m already daydreaming about a top clash between ITA and POR :)

    1. POR-ITA:
Most sensible option is a referee that has a CL final or at least a prestigious KO-game on EC/WC under his belt. Someone who doesn’t get nervous when the whole world is watching.

Media attention will be avoided though.
It is kind worrying that there is hardly no safe pair of hands available for such an important game.

    2. Imo Makkelie is the best choice.

      Delete
    3. You forgot Makkelie can't referee Portugal.

      Delete
    4. I agree with the discussion and the names above, although it sounds now a bit like we dont have more than 5 names in Europe for a big clash, and I think its not true actually. The reason is, completely rational, that the committee will want to minimize the risk, and then we have so much "historical" reasons and politics.

And by the way, I believe DCG should be considered (I hope not for the final though) , as we could have seen that no matter how bad he performs, he is always getting great appointments. And also Germans (Brych and Siebert) are seen as reliable choices in the eyes of many.

      Delete
    5. If CdcG Will get por-ita than we have the "problem" in the top refereeing nowadays imo. Too much focus on some refs who continuously show not to be able to handle the task in their european matches (im not talking about their domestic performance) . I get the feeling that some refs are (only) pushed because of their country of origin. This especially is the case IMO for refs from Italy, Netherlands and to lesser extent Spain. Gozubuyuk, Higler, CdcG and most category 1 refs from Italy get pushed whereas they IMO show they are simply not convincing enough in their European matches (yet.) It could be that the level in European refereeing as a whole is worse than it was years ago but for me the focus on the "need" for New Italian/Dutch/Spanish Elite refs partly is the problem as well...

      Delete
    6. After what happened in Belgrade, Makkelie is absolutely impossible for POR-ITA.

      Delete
    7. If FIFA handles the appointments directly (very hard, it's not an intercontinental playoff) or if UEFA and CONMEBOL go on with ref exchanges as in Euro/Copa America (slightly more likely, but again close to zero in this case), Nestor Pitana would be the absolute top choice for POR-ITA.

I think a Latin referee is needed for such a hot clash. If a European referee is to be chosen, I see no other option than Mateu Lahoz.

      Delete
    8. I actually like the idea of a CONMEBOL ref. This would avoid that an UEFA referee would lose face. For me the other option is an experienced UEFA referee at the end of his carreer, like Mateu Lahoz.

      Here's why:
Imagine Taylor or Turpin or one of the other younger Refs being in the middle when either Italy or Portugal miss the Worldcup. With such big interests, there is a risk that the appointed Ref could "lose face" and/or would be screwed forever in the country that misses the WC.

When I checked the "CV's" of both Taylor and Turpin, my conclusion was that both haven't handled similar high profile game like POR-ITA before. I don't consider the Nations League final as a big event (neither do the players...), neither the EL final or Supercup final. The pressure during these games wouldn't even come close to a POR-ITA final.
-Taylor handled only 3 KO games in Champions League (and one on Euro 2020) and therefore he is certainly is not the most experienced UEFA referee.
-Turpin handled a bit more KO-games in CL (no KO games on EC/WC events), but IMO Turpin wasn't in charge of any 'High Profile' game between two big clubs in CL.

Furthermore, just realize that referees in general experience more pressure during EC/WC games than in Champions League matches, which made me think that Turpin is not the best referee when the pressure is very high.

The ref of ITA-POR would be under a magnifying glass. The whole world is watching and the game itself is very hot and challenging.

IMO it should be a referee with 1) a big personality, 2) with enough experience in high profile games and 3) IMO at the end of his carreer to avoid that a younger ref would be screwed for this rest of his carreer.

    9. Agree that the amount of pressure in a POR-ITA knock-out final is higher than in for example a CL knock-out game.
I want to take it even further: if we consider the missed money and missed WC experience of the losing side, the interests at stake are even bigger than in a regular EC/WC knock-out game.

A final between POR-ITA requires the most experienced referee, without a doubt. Preferably a referee that has been in charge of a prestigious high profile game on a EC/WC.
      >> Caliber Brych / Kuipers / Cakir / Mateu Lahoz / Orsato*.

*I know Brych and Kuipers retired by that time and Orsato is Italian and therefore are not possible. Just to give some examples of experienced names. And even those experienced referees had troubles with South-European teams.

I also assumed that Mateu Lahoz will be avoided after Italy missed WC 2018. And Cakir's appointment would cause too much media attention and will be avoided as well.
There is certainly a lack of possible options in case Portugal and Italy will meet in the final Knock-Outs.

TL;dr: A pulmonary embolism had him spending several days in intensive care. According to him, a telephone call that he decided to make in order to ask for a medical check saved his life (had he boarded the airplane to officiate in Switzerland-Italy WCQ match the following day, he would have probably died due to pressure difference)

Wrong decision in my opinion but I can see why VAR didn't intervene even though I would have prefered an intervention here.
2 VAR interventions earlier in the game (5' and 23'). One for disallowing a goal, one for allowing one (offside).

    2. Never a DOGSO, especially for the other defender who was very close. I But yes, in the overall context we have a 5% of DOGSO here, can't be 100% denied, that's the problem with VAR and grey areas like penalties and red cards.

  14. Manchester City - West Ham United
Oliver - Burt, Bennett (Gillet, Hussin)

14' Good PK no-call, just a great defense
17' Correctly disallowed goal by AR1 for offside
21' Good offside call by AR1, however quite chaotic in the signalization
28' Correct YC for SPA trip, quite clearly outside the PA
37' Fantastic advantage played, resulted in a goal-scoring chance

A pretty uneventful first half for Oliver. His foul recognition was without any flaws, players made it quite easy for him, played som very good advantages (especially at 37'). Quite a difficult evening for Burt, he correctly disallowed MCI goal at 17'. The second half started with a little delay due to grounds crew clearing the field of snow.

61' Correct YC for SPA trip
    92' Good off-side call by AR2 disallowing a goal

Expected performance by Oliver in a very unchallenging match. It is fair to say that basically nothing could have went wrong for a referee of his caliber today, both YCs were crystal clear and he had no trouble with the players or the managers. Good night for Burt, great offside call to disallow a goal in 17' and a couple of correct ones in the later stages of the game. Bennett also disallowed a goal, altough it was a much easier call.

Have you spotted any mistakes or points for improvement to lower his mark from 8.4 to 8.3

    2. In Slovakia, the base mark is 8.3 and as it was a very unchallenging match, I decided not to raise it. However, if the UEFA standard is 8.4, in that case it was a 8.4 performance.

  15. Chelsea - Manchester United
Taylor - Beswick, Nunn (Kavanagh, Robathan)

28' Tough challenge on the border of a YC, would like at least a verbal warning there
44' Very naive foul in the PA by the attacker, YC could have been given there
45' Wrong YC for SPA/LoR hold - the hand did not have any effect on the attacker, he fell even easier than Rashofrd a minute before

Busy night for Taylor right from the start, a couple of good foul calls in the first 10-15 minutes. He applies the traditional British style which I am not very fond of - in the background, without much enthusiasm or by the book gestures, foul is a foul and that is it. He let the game flow, not calling every little hold or use of hands which helped it. The first half did not have any really challenging situations, but the tensions at the end showed some warnign signs for Taylor. The first YC of the game was very soft or rather wrong in my opinion, it neither did stop a promising attack or showed a lack of respect.

49' Correct YC for a reckless trip
53' Correct YC for a hold and a trip off the ball
59' With the meter that has been set, players are demanding a YC and Taylor could get in trouble if similiar fouls follow
67' Very, very, very late PK call, not a good look, but a good decision by one of Tayor's teammates. We can only guess who spoke to him, probably 4th official or AR2
77' Correct YC for a reckless kick
79' Clear offside after the shot, unnoticed by AR1
90+2' Correct YC to Ronaldo for dissent, many (including me would have appreciated a 2nd YC for the clapping, but I can understand it not being given)
90+3' Very clear offside missed by AR2 resulting in a YC for Tuchel
90+5' Correct YC for SPA hold
    90+6' Correct YC for timewasting

The way the match ended definitely helped Taylor, the players were not as emotional as in the earlier minutes. The referees did not have their best games, Taylor was wrong with one YC and looked rather bad with a late PK call (probably helped with by his teammates). His ARs had missed one off-side each with Nunn missing a very clear one at the end. No major mistakes, but the participants were quite frustrated. Basically a definiton for a 8.2 performance by all involved.

    R - 8.2
    AR1 - 8.2
    AR2 - 8.2

  16. Real Madrid - Sevilla
Sánchez Martinez (UEFA 1st)- Cabanero Martinez, Garcia (Bengoechea, Gonzales)

6' Interesting situation, AR1 had some problems with the communication system, took some time and I don't think it was repaired, so the game probably continued without him plugged in
18' A little flair-up after a foul, good job by Martinez of controlling the situation and talking to the offenders
23' Good call by AR2 to signal the foul, YC or at least a verbal warning for SPA trip would be preferable, but it being the first challenge of this kind, no action is understandable
32' Good onside call by AR1 on the goal by Benzema
33' Correct YC for a reckless kick, the player reffered to the situation from 23' when pleading his case
36' Penalty appeal by Sevilla, VAR did not interfere. There is a clear kick on the foot of the attacker, that should have been a PK and therefore it is a key mistake by Martinez and Bengoechea. The kick clearly interfered with the player's movement and he did not go down before it

Well, a very interesting first half for Martinez and his team. While both not giving the card at 23' and giving it at 33' is supportable, he made a clear mistake in 36', where he should have whistled for a PK and there should have been VAR interference. So often we say that it is not a VAR stuff, but in this case I don't see any reasons to not reverse it. Good call by AR1 concerning the onside before the goal.

55' Correct YC for a LoR holding
60' Correct YC for a reckless charge after a good advantage
66' Interesting situation, looked like a trip after the players collided, but common sense says play on here
69' Correct YC for a reckless kick
75' Potential handball inside the PA, but the arm is in a natural position and the ball came of the player's body
81' Missed follow-through foul in the middle of the field
84' Correct YC for an SPA handball
87' Fantastic on-side call by AR2 before the goal, a matter of centimeters
88' Good PK no-call, the ball was played first
90' Great advantage leading to a promising attack
90+2' Good YC for a reckless trip, quite a volatile reaction from the players that Martinez handled well

Despite the afore-mentioned PK mistake, a good performance by Martinez with correctly given cautions and only some small and irrelevant inaccuracies. It was quite a tough match to handle with some players' personalities being really difficult. He has an interesting personality, can engage with the players emotionally if needed, but he can also show a really calm demeanor when it suits the match. It's a shame then that such a good performance was hindered by hist first half mistake.

    R - 7.9 (8.5)

    AR2 - 8.5
    VAR - 7.9
