  1. Completely exaggerated appointments for both Massa and Guida in this international series, sorry :/. Maybe Rosetti is planning to promote them both at the next chance?

No game for Vinčić in this break besides VAR duty in Serravalle, and the names one should have expected for the remaining relevant clashes I think.

  2. Well, after two CL games and now this assignment with Vassaras as observer, indeed it looks like Guida is under focus by committee for a promotion and maybe more than Massa at moment. We will see! I didn't expect him in Finland - France. It will be definitely easier than the expected because France managed to qualify yesterday, but still a very important game for the group.
About the rest, Mateu Lahoz was expected, the game in Bosnia could have been by far more important, same speech as FIN - FRA. I think that the choices in this case were made based on the teams involved.
BIH - UKR more open to any result than the game in Finland.
Soares Dias in a game that will be crucial for second place, the same Grinfeeld but in the latter case the win by home-team is more expected, "easier" on paper.
Siebert finally with another decisive tie.

    1. Hello Chefren. Could you please revisit Armenia vs. Germany VARint? In the broadcast, before the onfield review, there were shown much more conclusive pictures IMO. I thought VAR Pignard was unrightfully criticised for intervening on this blog. 4. As indicated in an earlier topic, special choice for Turpin in an important match for the Netherlands. If Netherlands loses and Turkey wins = no World Cup. Draw/win Netherlands = World Cup. Turpin has a very bad reputation in the Netherlands. No reason not to appoint him imo but no audience is going to help him for sure.

  5. Yes, NED-NOR is in an empty stadium. That makes things a lot easier for Turpin.
The Rotterdam stadium and supporters can be tough. Supporters threw lots of beer glasses and other stuff on the pitch the past weeks in Eredivisie matches.

    2. Still called Banana- man. Good balanced article though :)

It still amazes me that Turpin is in charge of the most important game of the year. I don't think any other name would create buzz in Dutch media, but Turpin's surely does.

      Delete
    3. In the end of the article, it is stated that Turpin has developed himself very well after the Feyenoord-Roma game, however he didn't make the step to ultimate 'top' of elite referees.

This is interesting. I think he can make that final step, but has some important area's to improve:
      - In particular 'letting the game' flow. When I watch his games, I often notice that he applies a low line of physical play. For me, Brych and Kuipers are the masters of 'letting the game flow' without it being boiled-over. Maybe it is just Turpin lacking a strong personality or a natural authority (the 'X-factor') and is therefore not taking any risks?
      - In line with the 1st point: treatment of difficult players. In my opinion Turpin is one of the refs that could be easy fooled by diving, theatric players. Awarding soft penalties. Furthermore, some teams are wasting time or committing a lot of (small) fouls to slow down the pace of the game. This is very annoying and nowadays, this is only punished by refs that have a very strong personality. Those who take no BS from ANY player (whoever that may be).

Also stated in the article: on EC's/WC's, Turpin was sent home after group stages. It seems that he is suffering in games where the pressure is the highest.

To sum up: I think Turpin is a very good ref (top 10 of Europe), but to make the final step to the top 3, he needs to work on these aspects.

I don't expect any difficulties for him tonight in NED-NOR. An empty stadium, two teams that are focused on playing football. These players don't have a certain temperament. No difficult players (troublemakers) I think? Turpin must be a good ref for this game.

    5. @ Unknown,
Deliberately or not, with your last paragraph you made a description of a very poor referee (with which I agree by the way). An empty stadium - so no pressure by the fans, no difficult players - so no pressure by the players. It is not that Turpin is good for that game - any referee should handle with ease such a game. I know that a lot of people will jump on me now but IMO this is a type game with which some North European referee made a good career. A certain Bjorn Kuipers had a lot of games of English and German teams - teams that are famous for their fair play. And almost every time when he had to deal with South European teams he had great problems IMO. I just want to express my opinion that the quality of the referee is observed only in situations of highest pressure. It is just what I honestly think.

      Delete
    6. "I just want to express my opinion that the quality of the referee is observed only in situations of highest pressure." >> 100% agree.

Are there any refs in current elite group who can handle the most complicated, temperamental, high pressure games with ease? Maybe not..

      Delete
    7. @Anonymous, very intelligent comment.

      Delete
    8. @ Unknown,
Again, just my opinion, but I think that still there are Elite referees who are able to work well under pressure - Taylor, Orsato, Lahoz, Oliver, Cakir (I am not interested in politics), also some future Elite - Siebert, Sanchez Martinez to name a few...

      Delete
    9. Handling pressure is of course very important in refereeing, but there is also more, technical abilities for example and simply delivering correct decisions, which can be easier if players aren‘t difficult to handle but it mustn‘t. And under this aspect, Turpin isn‘t a bad referee at all, even at the highest level. But since VAR is implemented there is more importance in handling the pressure by players, fans etc. added.

    10. This is just my feeling:

We can all agree, Chefren when analysing the Italian media:
      1) has a deep understanding of their 'ideology' which is useful for us
      2) he gives his own view on that 'ideology' (negative)
      3) it doesn't affect his own personal views

I wish that some Dutch users utilised more critical thinking like Chefren on this comparable topic. All the comments after RUSDEN which I had to delete, obviously from NL (I'm not implicating anyone here, btw!), were really pathetic and came from this kind of thinking. The same kind of narrow thinking is visible in this discussion IMO.

Tony Blair stated that "what politicians generally don't understand is that most people only think about politics for five minutes in their day(s)". I like this comment, we can apply this principle to refereeing too - most people don’t deeply focus on referees in their matches (like, eg., me :D), and just take some ‘random’ arbitrary impressions from the games, who is a good referee and not.

This is relevant for two reasons:

      1) Recency Effect and Confirmation Bias

-> The first time that most Dutch people interacted with the then-1st Cat referee Clément Turpin, was probably during the controversial Roma vs. Feyenoord match. Turpin’s performance was indeed very poor and expectedly generated a lot of media coverage and memories.

Ever since, the Frenchman was surely ‘the Roma vs. Feyenoord referee’, and each match he handled was amplified in this way. His good performance in Ajax vs. Valencia was obviously somehow construed as a bad one, as a clear example of this confirmation bias affecting people’s judgement.

      2) Perception vs. Reality of top-class refereeing

-> The general public, in my experience, generally have a really good feeling for who is a good referee and not. But they are not experts, (understandably!) they don’t look deeply into the performances that deeply. So superficial impressions, such as personality and presence, matter a lot in this regard (Forlan wrote an excellent re. this, I recall).

I’ll give the easiest example: If you ask most people, Byron Moreno was one of the worst referees in history, and Pierluigi Collina was the best ever - I guess, because of their perceived ‘presence’ and respective perceived proximity to ‘controversy’ in their games. When you technically analyse their performances, one reaches a rather different conclusion.

If you can’t be bothered to read the rest of the comment, then glance through this paragraph - ever since Roma vs. Feyenoord, Dutch people have the idea that Turpin is a ‘rabbit in the headlights’ during his games, and because the elements of his personality superficially still conform to that, confirmation bias takes over, and people conform to the same view .

I can understand how one would come to that conclusion, with his facial expressions, more distant leadership style, and so on. But it is total nonsense. The idea that this Turpin now “cannot deal with the pressure” is complete bollocks - he was excellent pressure-cooker games, Peru vs. New Zealand, in Arsenal vs. Atlético de Madrid, and recently, Albania vs. Poland.

So all this crap about him “not letting the games flow” and so on, is simply confirmation bias that Turpin is nervous during the games and “cannot handle the pressure”. Sorry, but it is nonsense - if anything, the Frenchman is one of the MOST courageous referees at UEFA’s whole disposal. Not one Dutch user actually challenged the idea that this Turpin appointment was “unwise” - that’s sad, to be honest.

This entire discussion^^ really lacks critical thinking IMO, and doesn’t paint those who contributed to it in the best light, I think.

    11. I can only write "Chapeau" after having read this comment, Mikael. Definitely superb analsys, I fully agree.
It is indeed incredible to put in discussion the qualities of Turpin, he is an excellent referee, able to face with pressure.
He keeps himself very firm and he is always determined, differently from other referees. It is true that at that time he was not the Turpin we know today, and maybe that's also normal, because a referee needs development, but please we are talking about one of the best UEFA referee at moment. His EURO has been below expectations, but this can happen, when we talk about crucial decisions, merely looking at the referee, we must admit he is a top.

    12. Hi Mikael,

Thank you for your comment. I was the one commented as ‘unknown’ on 08:42. Because I'm a coward :D

It is interesting to read your comments. I always enjoy reading your analysis. Please never stop writing(!), it is very very intersting to read your comments.

I’ll be very honest with you :)
      - I didn’t watch Feyenoord-Roma back then;
      - I neither watched Turpin's performances during Euro 2020 or read any negative buzz in (domestic) media. I also didn't comment on this blog during Euro2020;
      - And yes, I also didn’t watch the games you mentioned in which Turpin was very good :D (maybe I SHOULD watch those games… I’m interested if I can find them somewhere?);
      - Yes I'm Dutch, but I’m not rooting for any Dutch, German, English or any refs in general. I'm the first one to admit it when Dutch refs make terrible mistakes. In the Netherlands, we are very critical on the performance of our referees, but we also have a big shortage of referees on amateur level which worries me.... I just love the game called ‘football’ and I’m very much interested in refereeing in general. My appreciation for referees is IMMENSE.
      - I did watch Ajax-Valencia and several other games officiated by Turpin, but he just didn’t impress me and I just did not like his attitude in general;
      - Last but not least: I have a personal taste :) I’m the one liking modern refereeing: refs who let the game flow and not whistling a lot, background-minded, those who are feeling the game and do not too strictly apply the LOTG, ref's that have a strong natural authority without arrogant manners or (too) expressive facial impressions or temperament. And yeah, I TERRIBLY hate soft penalties. :D

You are right that my comments are a bit “randomly” and subjective, because I didn’t watch ALL Turpin’s games. Based on the few Turpin’ games I watched, I formed my opinion (like: “he’s not a strong personality, he’s whistling a lot, not letting the game flow, whistling soft penalties, he doesn’t punish players that are wasting time, blah blah blah). :D

To conclude: my impressions might be not correct on the long term. I admit that, because I didn’t watch all his games. It is also (partly) a personal taste. Some readers on this blog like ref's that are strictly applying the LOTG, some like managers that are bending the LOTG for the sake of the game.
Maybe it is just me not liking Turpin's attitude and his expressive facial impressions in general. It's the same issue I have with some Spanish referees. That is just my subject opinion. If someone else likes it... Perfect! Let’s agree to disagree. It is also a matter of personal taste :)

    13. As a Dutch responder, I feel a bit attacked maybe my Mikael W.
For me personally, I do notice that Turpin is often viewed a bit negative in The Netherlands. I think this is for the most part unjustified. Even in the infamous Feyenoord-Roma match, Turpin did not so much make mistakes in my memory, but he mostly didn't manage so well. He did not create leadership on the pitch.
And maybe this is the main thing, Turpin is viewed as a referee who doesn't so much manage.

For me personally, I see no problem at all in the appointment of Turpin and I also don't think there was a massive uproar. I think Turpin is a good referee, but I also think he has not yet made the step towards the biggest names in European football. We can refer to the World Cup and EURO's he did: he did not make it into the knock out stages. Maybe also due to bad luck, but still. But he still has time, because he is only 39. But I do feel he is not at the level of Orsato, Lahoz, Makkelie, Taylor, Brych.

I personally think that the appointment of Turpin for Netherlands - Norway is a good appointment. He is a safe pair of hands, I am sure he will do well and is doing well (I can't watch). I feel I judge him honestly and if I did not respond to his appointment, this has to do with the fact that I feel his appointment is just fine and I don't see any reason to respond to a good and sensible appointment.

    14. @ Unknown,
You don't have and certainly don't need to appologies for your OPINION. I am following the blog since its beginning and while I deeply appreciate the work of the two admins and the personal time they dedicate, lately I found absolutely annoying the way they threat anyone who has a different opinion. I came to the conclusion that here it is absolutely impossible to critisize a referees without to have to hear a lesson after that from one of the admins. Sorry, but my genuine believe is that improvement comes only with a fair critisizm. I don't think that by praising or justifying one's mistakes we are doing a favour to him. That's why I will continue to share my honest OPINION without insulting anybody personally or using bad language and maybe face some disapprovement by the admins but I will stay with my principles and beliefs. Greetings everyone and stay safe.

    15. Hi all,

This is "unknown" again (08:42 / 20:55) - I don't know how to change my user name... :)

I partly agree with RikB - personally I don't feel attached by anyone. I REALLY enjoy reading the depth analysis of Mikael and Chefren and I truly want to underline that they are doing a GREAT great(!) job managing this blog. As a watcher of football and referees, I really enjoy reading this blog and in particlar your profound analysis. So please keep going!

I don't have an issue with Turpin's appointment (NED-NOR) at all. However, I agree with RikB. The appointment just surprised me a bit, because of the negative buzz in national media. I never mentioned Turpin is a bad referee, never.
For me he (currently) is a top 10 of Europe which is a BIG compliment. I think RikB and I both tried to provide our very honest OPINION in what Turpin is lacking to join the TOP 3 level of referees in Europe :). That's all. Let's be clear, he is not a bad ref.

I also agree with Anonymous (16:49) - referees are often praised for performances in games that were not that too complicated. We need to judge/consider the level of difficulty as well.

Well, if someone tells me how I can change my user name, please advise me. :D I'm glad to join the conversation on this blog and judge referees, because I REALLY apppreciate their job.

    1. The Shaun Evans appointment was interesting for two reasons. 1) He has never done a 3rd round world cup qualification match in the centre before. 2) His ARs and 4th official were not from Australia so I'm not sure how many times they'd worked together before, if at all. I didn't watch the game but it seems to have gone well. Very few cards on the match report.

  13. If anyone wants to view (or cut clips from ;)) these scenes from today's decisive Algeria vs. Burkina Faso WCQ, (FMR on YouTube for some countries):

62' - potential penalty to BFA (challenge)
74' - potential penalty to BFA (tripping); offside call by Zakhele Siwela
82' - penalty given to BFA (tripping); sanction?

MtG: pre-selected Victor Gomes stood as referee in this game and previous viewers will have recognised the South African's style - very lenient disciplinary whilst increasing his ARs visual control areas, with a focus on warnings using his good/strong communication skills. In the 1H that worked quite well, but in the 2H, the (Algeria) players cottoned on, and Gomes let a bit more go than he should have IMO - but still an expected level performance in the final reckoning. Poor management of DtR / additional time though.

  19. Just had the ability to watch the full NED-NOR game.

The Dutch reporter (who is very annoying by the way) introduced Turpin in the beginning of the game and immediately started about the Feyenoord-Roma game. He also said, we shouldn’t go down memory lane. Totally AGREE.

While watching, it almost felt like a friendly game. Without knowing, you wouldn’t think that both teams were fighting for a WC ticket.

    To sum up objectively:
    - It was an easy going game, in an empty stadium. Even the coach was on a wheelchair on the stands, so yeah, not a very challenging game. Compare that to games with 1) a packed stadium, 2) temperamentful players, 3) serious foul playing- or time-wasting players, 4) and games where Simeone or Conte are screaming in front of the dug-out. Totally different :D
    - There were no KMI’s.
    - It was a fair game. Players were focused on playing football. Turpin was well respected by players.
    - Physically he looked good – just watch his sprint at 2-0. His positioning was also good.
    - I’m still underlining my previous opinion at 08:42 >> Turpin is not applying a high line of physical play, comparing to some English/German/Dutch referees. I saw that he whistled some ‘fouls’ in the benefit of Holland and I’m pretty sure that some TOP Elite refs wouldn’t whistle. Turpin is definitely not taking any risks.
-To be honest (yes), I need to watch him in more games to form a solid opinion, especially in games where he is challenged more by dirty players with bad behaviors, because we can evaluate the quality of a ref the most in complicated high pressure games.
-And again: I’m not saying he is a bad ref :) Nope. I just conclude that for me personally, he’s top 10, but not yet on the level of (for example) Skomina, Brych, Kuipers. And I still don’t like his style and facial expressions, but yeah, that’s just my personal OPINION :D
    - No crucial mistakes. 8.3 performance for me. Nobody will talk about the referee after this match.

    1. I watched the game and I think I never saw a so easy duty for a UEFA referee at this level. Only 7 fouls whistled, nothing happened, most of the time Vassaras just watched a football game and nothing more.
The only YC of the game, issued when it was not still sure how things would have turned later. With the hindsight, I think he could even avoided this booking, nothing would have happened later, an extremely fair behavior that I never saw and I would like to wish for many games, but indeed it's impossible.

    2. Football is an emotional contact sport and that's why it is loved by so many people. I don't understand why someone, even if he is a referee, would wish to make it sterile and emotionless. If it becomes like that there would be no need of a referee actually. I think that everybody who really loves football would like just the opposite.
