    1. Is Kevin Blom still punished for his mistake in CL?

IMO the treatment of VAR's is really strange. Atwell made 2 obvious mistakes during BVB-AJA but is still appointed as VAR for the very important match ITA-SUI.

      Delete
    2. POR-SRB Orsato or Mateu? Maybe the 1st one is in better form. For sure the name for this match will be 100% in Qatar next year

      Delete
    3. Should be Orsato in Portugal I think, because Mateu Lahoz would be second Spanish referee for Portugal in a few days, we had already people criticizing that from Serbia, well, I think it will be avoided for the game in Lisbon.

      Delete
    4. I also think Orsato.

So who's left for SPA-SWE... Vincic?

      Delete
    5. Vincic is indeed my idea, in case this would confirm the reputation by committee and it would allow to think that he has joined the "very big" names.

      Delete
    6. Vincic already had the same exact match in Euro. I don't think he will get it again even if he joined the "very big" names in the eyes of committee.

  2. Looking at Oliver appointment, it is easy to think that these choices were made before CL and EL games, otherwise I think he wouldn't have got this game. It is a good signal that he has been confirmed, in my opinion, game is very important for the group, but based on this assignments we can also draw the conclusion that Taylor is seen as England nr. 1 in all cases.
Having already said about del Cerro, I like Visser and Nyberg appointments. Very important games in which home-team win is expected, The Swedish is followed very closely by committee after Under 21 tournament.

    1. Is it to mention that Oliver is working with Kavanagh with VAR in this game and not with Atwell again? Or are this changes usual in the english refereeing teams?

      Delete
    2. Kavanagh was Oliver's VAR and Attwell was Taylor's before they moved VAR to Nyon I think

      Delete
    3. IMO, BIH-FIN is an appointment at least as good as ITA-SUI, because both teams need a win to then have a realistic chance for a play-off spot. In the group C match, it's only about direct qualification or play-off for the two teams.
Furthermore Oliver clearly got more so far in CL - and got a QF at the EURO.
Therefore I think, the position of England's nr. 1 still is quite open.

  5. Belgium: Who are the next FIFA referees?

There seems to be a push now for Lothar D'Hondt who doesn't impress me. Then Jasper Vergoote may have a chance, but I'm not fully convinced by him either. Wesli De Cremer has the right age and in my opinion more talent, but does not seem to have the same focus from KBVB. Put and especially Van Damme may have a chance, I have liked him. Definitely no chance for Boterberg. Dierick and Smet have been on the list in the past and are now too old.

I expect Boucaut to come off the list soon and be replaced by either D'Hondt or Van Damme.

    1. These are the current 7 fifa referees of Belgium:

NAME - AGE - CATEGORY UEFA REFEREE LIST
      Alexandre Boucaut - 41 years - 2cat.
      Nicolas Laforge - 34 years - 3cat.
      Erik Lambrechts - 37 years - 2cat.
      Jonathan Lardot - 37 years - 2cat.
      Bram Van Driessche - 36 years - 3cat.
      Nathan Verboomen - 33 years - 3cat.
      Lawrence Visser - 31 years - 1cat.

Boucaut will be the first to disappear from the FIFA list.
The possible referees who will succeed Boucaut on the FIFA list:
      * Lothar D'hondt - 27 years
      * Jasper Vergoote - 29 years old
      * Kevin Van Damme - 31 years
      * Wesli De Cremer - 29 years
      * Bert Put - 33 years
All 5 referees are active as VAR. All 5 except Bert Put are active as semi-pro referees.

My conclusion: I don't think Bert will become Put because he is not a semi-pro referee. Of the other 4 think
I think Lothar D'hondt has the best chance because he's the youngest. He was also the same age as Lawrence Visser with his
debut in First Division A. Another option is to choose Kevin Van Damme because the other 3 referees (D'hondt,
Vergoote and De Cremer) can come on the list later if referees such as Lardot, Lambrechts,... also grow older and do not promote like Boucaut.

I think the successor of Boucaut will also be Lothar D'hondt or Kevin Van Damme.

  17. Wrong RC imo for Gibraltar. 22 min. At most YC. Wrong VAR intervention.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Very strange RC in Turkey Gibraltar match, I can't understand what exactly VAR have seen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm Im not sure. From some angles it looks a bit like "scissors tackle" which is extremely dangerous and clear RC. But maybe a YC would be enough.

      Delete
    2. I think, it's some sort of a scissor tackle and indeed somehow endangering the safety, so it might have some fans here.
But for me, a RC is not the expected decision here and it surely isn't clear and obvious.
The referee (+AR) didn't even give a foul though, so maybe it can be seen as missed incident.

      Delete
    3. The tackle is somewhere between careless and reckless in my opinion - Turkey player puts his leg across what would otherwise be a fair tackle and the contact isn't that bad.

This is the (or, one) problem with the too-outcome-focused approach to assessing tackles/challenges I spoke about before - it totally neglects common sense.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Philipp, video of the incident can be found below. Scissor tackle is the reason, the tackle is targeted to ball, but very dangerous for the legs of opponent. Nevertheless, in my opinion this can't be clear and obvious mistake, clearly out of context.

      Delete
    5. After that position, Turkish player injured and he could not continue the match. His leg could be broken.

      Delete
    6. I disagree with the majority's view. Correct red card after required VAR intervention in my opinion.

It's the risk of the player performing a tackle if an opponent is in the playing distance and therefore he could find himself in the path of your tackle. As the fouled player did nothing against the LotG, you can't blame him for being tackled down. He just won the position by positioning himself in front of the (tackling) opponent - risky for his well-being but nothing illegal.

And as the type of contact CLEARLY endangered the safety of an opponent, the match officials were right in taking this strong disciplinary action.

      Delete
    7. I don't really get "It's the risk of the player performing a tackle if an opponent is in the playing distance and therefore he could find himself in the path of your tackle.", Euro Soccer Ref.

It makes sense that an opponent is in a playing distance when performing a tackle - if not, why should I go in a duel? The risk of hitting an opponent is part of that; when assessing a tackle, the severity, the type, intensity and force are points to look at. The result, the contact, is an argument as well of course but sending a player off whenever he unluckily hits a player because of the risk he takes that an opponent may be in his path - that's not expedient IMO.

      Delete
    8. Good intervention by VAR. Dangerous play results in RC decision. Absolutely correct decision IMO

      Delete
    9. While I completely understand, how you can see a RC here, it's also quite obvious that this is not the "majority's view" as ESR puts it. So it can hardly be a clear and obvious error and therefore a correct VAR intervention.

      Delete
  19. Replies
    1. Stone Wall YC for me. I can see why with some pictures you could argue red. But the fact that the offender was trying to play the ball fairly and the attacker puts his leg there late, it should not be a RC IMO.

      Delete
    2. Hmm, I pretty much disagree with that RC.
Both players are aiming at the ball (and have a serious possibility to reach it fairly). The TUR player, however, brings himself (or at minimum his left leg) between the opponent and the ball to shield the ball. The GIB player doesn't really jump/lunge into the opponent, force isn't that high - he simply catches the opponent's left leg (moved towards him!).. I do not really see evidence that the GIB player endangered the opponent's safety, especially not regarding a VAR intervention.

      Delete
    3. IMO never a red card, bad decision

    4. Absolutely SPOT ON decision by Oliver, the key factor for RC is the hitting point. I must say very difficult to see live, but also in this case it seems as some seconds more before showing card helped the referee in taking a correct decision. However, English referees are well known for waiting a while before issuing card so I'm not surprised.

      Delete
    5. Excellent spot, most likely by fourth official who reacts immediately after seeing the incident.

      Delete
    6. Excellent spot by @Euro Soccer Ref to point out the FO is on his mic just after the tackle occurs.

      Delete
    7. Absolutely correct red card... But what about the body language? "selling the decision"? It's obvious that the FO might have helped a LOT, but how is this efficient communication? I could accept like 3-4 seconds but this is way too much... A quick red card when it comes to fouls like SFP/VC is a MUST to prevent mass confrontation...

      Delete
  22. Very poor half from Boiko, now a mandatory YC missed after Turkish player grabbed a shirt of Gibraltar player who was running away.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How can we say excellent Oliver for showing a RC clearly after waiting VAR? After the whistle he points two times to his earpiece and only afterwards he made his decision. Such a bad tackle should be seen immediately without any delay or advice from outside.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is logical that Oliver has doubts, after the red card shown in Champions. Maybe his mistake the other day made him doubt, he's human, but he still had the courage to show the red card. For me, he proves to be a referee with a great personality.

      Delete
    2. This garbage again?

He touched his ear once at 36:10 and, to my mind, he's simply pushing his earpiece back in. Oliver is quite literally digging into his back pocket at 36:13. On a challenge that happened at 35:56. If you think VAR can give a conclusive answer in 17 seconds, you have no idea what it's like to sit in a VOR.

Imagine, for a moment, that A) Oliver wants to be sure so is thinking it through, B) he wants to tend to the injured player before displaying misconduct and C) he wants input from his trail AR and FO, if they have it, because THEY would have had the best angle from the far side of the field to see the point of contact.

As a referee, do you think all that takes about 17 seconds or so? Because, I do.

This red either gets shown immediately if Oliver is certain AND there is a threat of retaliation or it gets shown exactly when it gets shown in order to keep the situation as calm as possible.

But, no, anonymous trolls on here again with idiotic VAR conspiracies.

      Delete
    3. I would like to ask admins why do they accept when such insults like trolls and idiotic conspiracies when people just present their opinion without using bad language or insulting anybody? I am pretty sure that if it was the other way around this message would be banned pretty quickly.

      Delete
    4. I suggest you grow thicker skin. And maybe even adopt a user name.

The conspiracy theory is idiotic. That's not an insult. I didn't call you an idiot.

And when the same assertions keep coming from anonymous accounts, it's the definintion of trolling. The same argument made again and again, without any validity to it. What else would you call it?

Not all opinions are created equal. The constant argument that VAR is illegally intervening when there is a somewhat delayed showing of miscondut is garbage.

You--I presume it's you, unless it's another "anonymous" are down below in this post calling everyone else "naive." Except, the people who know how VAR works and have experience with officiating games with VAR aren't the ones who are naive.

      Delete
    5. The correct decision is the most important thing. If Oliver overreacts and throws an incorrect yellow card out immediately, people would be screaming about his poor foul detection.

As usaref wisely points out, there's absolutely 0 retaliation here, there's no threat to the match that needs an immediate card, he takes his time, gets the injured player treatment and gives the correct decision, potentially taking input from his team, but that's why it's a team.

17 seconds to find a correct angle, rewatch, double check and triple check before telling the referee who was already fiddling with his red card before that is again outstanding and I feel that the VARs are in the wrong job if they can do that.

    1. 8': excellent decision, also explaining by gestures the reasons of the choice (he made the same for RC). I would never give penalty for handball when arms are in such position due to body movement. The problem is that very often this is given, especially in serie A, and VAR doesn't intervene. In this case it should be never punishable, unless a very deliberate and clear movement of arm not consistent with the action of the player.
23': clearly punishable handball, no discussions.

Three crucial decisions correctly taken in a very challenging game, well done by Oliver without the need of VAR. He definitely recovered from the previous performance in Dortmund, I would say today it was the contrary!
And, very good remark by xabi: he wasn't afraid of issuing the red card, despite of having committed a mistake about a direct red card in his previous game. That's important to underline.
But I don't understand a comment written above by David Crammond: "Var cleared a Finland penalty. Little harsh my opinion." Which situation did he mean?

      Delete
    2. Oliver himself showed that there was VAR check after the not given (correctly IMO) penalty and also he showed twice that VAR is speaking at his ears before showing the red card (also correct IMO). Again I cannot understand the naive people who don't believe in the informal VAR interventions even when the referee on the pitch himself shows that there is VAR intervention.

      Delete
    3. Hey, @Anonymous... you have no idea how VAR works and it shows.

There is absolutely SUPPOSED to be a check after a not-given or given penalty. That's exactly how VAR works. A decision is made on-field and then the VAR is doing a check to ensure the decision was not clearly and obviously wrong. How is this so hard to comprehend?

And as I lay out above, your claims on the red card are simply wrong. Completely incorrect, in fact.

It is very annoying to have someone like you on here calling others naive when it is abundantly clear that you have no idea how VAR works.

    5. I've see on another forum that Oliver's ref to VAR comms had failed.

      https://streamable.com/7actwp

Here you can see AVAR Neil Davies with Oliver and both managers communicating that there had been an error with the headsets that meant all communications were going through Darren England (Fourth Official). Pretty clear that all of these VAR speculations would have been nigh impossible given that Oliver couldn't hear Chris Kavanagh.

  28. IMO correct PK for Netherlands in 22' by Del Cerro

I think it can be discussed, for sure the call is supportable and one can't question VAR, but...

    2. Dutch player fell down not because of the contact but because of wanting to get a penalty. Thats the main thing here. For me the decision is wrong I am against such soft penalties they are ruining the game.

    3. Haven't referees learned by now that whenever a player puts both arms up in the sky when falling it's because he is diving and trying to deceive the ref? It's such an obvious Arjen Robben 2014 dive all over again.

    4. Buff, I have many doubts here. More play on for me

    5. Clear tripping and then careless foul. Pk is absolutely correct

  29. And another very soft in my view nonexistent penalty in favour of a big team. This time Holland are beneficiaries. VAR should have overruled this one also

  30. I think the penalty for The Netherlands was correct. But so far Del Cerro doesn't strike me as a great leader on the pitch. A bit annoyed, whistling a lot.

  31. I think Montenegro could have gotten a penalty for handball from Dumfries. What do you think?

    1. It would have been be an "Italian penalty", only in Italy they give such penalties.

    3. 38th minute that was.
Short distance, but arm is increasing the body surface. And I would say it's moving from an unnatural to a natural position.
So overall a grey area situation, where the referee decides, which factor weighs most.

  32. Penalty for the Netherlands is an outright joke. No contact whatsoever. Embarrassing. VAR had to intervene.

    2. There was a little contact but in the main I agree

    3. Better said, contact is absolutely normal.

  33. Correct handball penalty by Mariani (49') after input by AR2.

  34. OFR and penalty whistled by Nyberg to France. Absolutely correct call by Kamphuis. Very evident foul from behind, unexpected and in my opinion difficult to see for referee. Clearly reckless.

    1. Correct and very quick intervention. So quick, that Nyberg forgot to check the injury status of the player and let the medicals on, if necessary...

  35. This evening a not very convincing Del Cerro Grande. He whistles a lot, not always necessary.
But his facial expression is not good. It seems he’s almost always angry and sometimes authoritative.
He doesn’t show pleasure and never smiles, like Taylor and Kuipers.

    1. Not convincing enough, he should learn from his spanish coleague, Lahoz. :)

  36. Now we will have 2 big matches in this group G that can determine who goes to WC.

Netherlands - Norway and Montenegro - Turkey.
Also Groupd D where Finland and France are playing(Finland cant lose) and BIH plays Ukraine, match that is decisive for Ukraine

Elite refs there imo, Turpin, Cakir and Lahoz are available so my guess is them.

    1. Of course not the same group where their country's are. :)

    2. With Turpin already revealed for NED - NOR, I think that Mateu Lahoz is a possible name for FIN - FRA. This game could have been even more important, in case France hadn't qualified, but it was hard to think about such scenario. Nevertheless, an Elite referee is expected and I think the Spanish is an option.
I don't know about Cakir, after all the CL issues and Germany - Romania with the OFR, maybe he will not appear at all.
In Bosnia another Elite referee is expected: Soares Dias?
Then, to complete the last set, one could say Elite referee in Montenegro - Turkey as well, because very important for the Turkish team.
Siebert is the another name that can be appointed, in my opinion, otherwise another category 1 somewhere.
      We will know tomorrow!

    3. I would agree on Soares Dias in one of those matches, but Pinheiro is already VAR on Monday, that contradicts it a bit.
BIH-UKR should go to Mateu or Cakir, I think.
FIN-FRA then either to the other of the two or possibly Siebert.
Vincic would be another candidate (his VAR appointment should not prevent that), but not really a game for him, as he probably can't do MNE and BIH and has refereed FRA already. He could be appointed for WAL-BEL though, which was potentially important, but I expect a lower Elite referee there (Sidiropoulus?).
So MNE-TUR is the most difficult one. Mateu seems unlikely directly after dCG (but not completely impossible), so Siebert probably is the favourite. Unless Grinfeeld is considered ready again, then he could be another option.

    4. Oh sorry, Vincic's VAR appointment is on Monday - so he should be out as well.

Artur Soares Dias will officiate the Group E match between Wales and Belgium.

    6. My predictions:
      NED-NOR - Turpin (already revealed)
      MNE-TUR - Siebert
      BIH-UKR - Lahoz
      FRA-FIN - Cakir
