    1. Why are there 2 names below every match?

      Delete
    2. I thought important observers are not bothered with Youth League, even if they come to stadium directly from home.
      Anyway, good luck Ian McNabb!

  3. It's all or nothing for Kruzliak. Attwell back as VAR ?!?

    ReplyDelete
  4. So Rosetti for Kruzliak in a very important match for qualification. Easily one can guess that his Elite spot is in danger.

Interesting to see 8 Elite referees in the group stage of EL, committee don't want to take risks here.

Regarding the English officials. I'm surprised by the appointment of Tierney, who only did 1 WC Qualification game the last two years. But in Engeland his domestic appointments are very good! It is not his debut tho, in 2019/2020 he already had an Europa Leage GS match.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 9 elite referees in Europa League!!! It should be a record 😂

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, and it should mean that several referees will work on both, MD5 and MD6.

      Delete
  6. While Di Bello's UEL appointment was somehow expected, the Tierney's one comes from nothing. These are the only two second category referees with UEL appointment this season so far.

  7. Rosetti again in Monaco, this time the observation for Kružliak is in my opinion very similar to what he did with Bastien. An Elite referee in difficulty is seen by him. I think that he rather tries to make his presence felt by the referee than to go for demoting purposes.
I hope the Slovakian can recover because he is in an extremely difficult situation, then, it is not a coincidence that there we will see Attwell (not from Nyon, but at stadium, because this is the only game he has as VAR) and I think he will say some words to the English as well, after the last performances. The game is very important for the grup, so for sure there will be something interesting to watch there.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Indeed, remarkable to see Rosetti, Kružliak and Atwell on the same game.

Turpin and Makkelie to be saved for some deciding matches in CL on MD6.

The treatment of Mateu Lahoz, oh well... For me he is the best Spanish ref and the best ref should go to the WC. His appointments tell something different. He is used in complicated games (on paper), that's for sure. But kept away from the spotlight.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have my own theory about Mateu... he has flown apart of the rest since the begginings, with his own style and his own rules. Even so, his success is incontestable, getting the UCL final. But in my opinion something happened in the last Euro... that kickoff against Portugal, my theory is that he was recommended to check the VAR, but he refuses. His ego sometimes is bigger than the rationality. And maybe in Spanigh Primera he can do whatever he want, but not at UEFA level. But indeed, when he is 100% focused in the match, he´s brilliant.

      Delete
    2. Something definitely happened at Euro, since his appointments are different after that...

  10. Penalty by Turpin to Spartak after 50 seconds in the game: absolutely correct decision, player from SSC Napoli leaving his foot in order to create contact with attacker. Excellent spot.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Soft for my liking but supportable of course

      Delete
    2. Soft?? It is a rather excellent spot for Turpin. 50 seconds into the game as well. He was prepared. Bravo I say.

  11. Very interesting and curious thing:

At Nov 7, 1990 in Moscow was played a Champions Cup game between Spartak and Napoly (with Maradona). Same rivals, same weather (heavy snow), and referees' team from France (Michel Girard).

    1. Michel Girard, now retired from observer position and ligue1 and 2 appointement officer is Referees' Liaison Officer for ligue1 club St Etienne when playing at home.
He is a very nice man and observer.

  12. In 50', correctly disallowed goal by AR2, difficult situation. Not clear whether there had been a touch by head or not.

  13. 87': very proactive refereeing by Turpn. He stopped a possible mass confrontation before the start of it. A very good performance today in my opinion in very difficult weather conditions.

  15. Just saw the penalty whistled by Turpin. I'd say soft, but supportable.
Based on the replay, it is not sure that the contact caused the fall of the player.
One can argue that player feels the contact and falls down.

However, stupid movement by defender for sure and not playing the ball.

If Turpin would have played-on, should VAR intervene? I have doubts.

    ReplyDelete

    1. VAR should not intervene in situations like that in my opinion

    2. Call on the field should stand for this one IMO. Soft but supportable.

    1. This is normal, because of first match. You know in the first match big events happened. Also fans have a special reaction to #6 (MAR) because of the penalty position.

  18. OFR in Leverkusen for Sidiropoulos, clear foul by keeper, but rather particular situation in which we see a VAR intervention, should have been spotted by referee himself.

    1. What are the reasons why the sanction was a yellow and not a red? This was a punch to the head with the ball not in playing distance!

      Delete
    2. It's unintentional. VC must be deliberate contact between arm and head. You could perhaps make an argument that it's endangering safety but I think yc is expected there

      Delete
    3. I think that it was still assessed as (very despeerate) attempt to play ball. Otherwise, should have been a violent conduct.

    4. Indeed, he clearly went for the ball, but very late, video:

However, in terms of effects on opponent, RC could have been issued.

  19. Jug not really convincing. Could be challenged if he does not step up. Whistled a backpass at 51 min, which was clearly wrong

  20. Correct VAR intervention in L. Moskva-Lazio, penalty+YC missed by Dias. He should have seen it himself, really a clear mistake.

A serious mistake to miss this penalty live, indeed, we can't expect that from an Elite referee, isolated incident, a clear view on the players should be managed in such circumstance.

      Delete
    2. I find it very similar to the missed pk by Siebert in CL in Bern last Tuesday, don't you? But there no VAR intervention by Dankert

      Delete
    3. No, absolutely not similar, in this case the tackle is very reckless directly on opponent, it was different in Bern in my opinion.

    4. Thank you Chefren and thank you for your hard good job with this blog

    5. Chefren, it's a pretty high speed but the contact is not hard and he clearly also got the ball. Penalty, sure but it's not dangerous at all. Normal yellow card at best.

The classic behavior by an Italian player, I must admit.
Closer to a simulation than penalty.

  22. The penalty by Stieler: https://streamja.com/N37Zm
To be honest, I expected a VAR intervention there, do you see a contact?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The defender makes contact with his shin. I would say supportable that VAR didn't intervene. But not a clear foul.

      Delete
    2. No touch. If the Galatasaray player had stepped on the Marseille player's foot, the Marseille player would not have been able to lift his foot like that.
      Really joking decisions.
Also, there were serious footsteps in the match (by MAR #9 and MAR #6) and a very hard foul on Feghouli's ankle (MAR #14). These positions could have been RC, but the referee only showed YC.

      Delete
    3. Indeed, I insist this can't be described as soft contact, but mistake. Would have been extremely controversial in an important context.

    3. This is not a partial or soft contact. Fully step on foot with intensity and a huge consequence. PK + YC

    4. Honestly, this time In disagree this time with you chefren (Not often the case), but in this slowmo It looks Like a clear step on foot in my eyes

      Delete
    5. Should be analyzed by more replays, because if clear step on foot, it's an obvious VAR miss, we should try always to find a reason for a certain decision!

    6. IMO correct decision by Mateu

    7. Xabi, you can't be serious. This is a very clear foul. It's super easy for a referee to know that.

      Delete
    8. it seems that everything Mateu does is either correct or accepted because he is "Mateu the great" ;)

    9. The offender actually played the ball, right? In that case it could be interpreted as a fight for the ball, with non-intentional contact after that, which could be supportable I think.

    10. I have the feeling that the main purpose of the majority of the participants here is not to try to find the best possibile solution but just to defend the referees and to justify any decision no matter how bad it is...

    11. Correct decision by Mateo Lahoz
      Never penalty,
Defender kick clearly the ball before an accident named step on foot.
Some people is driving football in a ridiculous way.

    12. Good Argument Anonymous. I thought that the attacker plays the ball. But now I see what you mean. It looks more like the defender plays the ball and then the accident happens. So you convinced me that it is no Penalty.

  24. IMO correct RC by Kruzliak for Fofana (tackle as an attack, revenge foul) that could have been avoided had he called a rather clear previous foul.

  27. Good performance by Kabakov in Copenhage (he's back on the right way) 4 YC - all correct. Good management of players. Tight decision by AR1 for the first goal in the match.
I like Kabakov style and I hope to see more often in the appointments.

Here the penalty appeal in Mateu Lahoz game.
Indeed the reason for supporting the call is the fact that defender clearly played ball before, and then there is this contact with opponent.
My opinion is that a penalty could have been surely whistled, without doubts, but it is never a clear and obvious mistake and even more I agree with the perception of Mateu Lahoz, we should try to make more general analyses than going into the incident itself taking it as very isolated from the context. This is the same issue as many red cards for SFP we saw in recent times. I think you can whistle this penalty but it can be never like a clear step on foot without intent on the ball, referee had therefore his reasons to make this choice, I must say sensible work by VAR, calling an OFR would have been just reading into the book without watching the game.
Then of course this is a personal opinion, but at least we agree this can be penalty. We are on this blog to understand why some decisions are taken, and that's the most important thing, I would add.

    1. Spirit of the game: no penalty. Defender is not denying a goal scoring opportunity by standing on the foot, because - like you said - he first plays the ball.

This example actually shows very well why it is so important that the Referee and VAR are on the same line. What if the VAR would ask Mateu for an OFR?

This would lead to the following situation:
      1) Mateu disagrees with VAR in a packed stadium, because he has a different perception and feeling of the game >> Confusing for viewers/supporters.
      2) He can't deny the foul and decided to whistle a PK to avoid the confusion, although he doesn't like the call and perception.

I'm pretty sure that many Refs would whistle it after an OFR. I have seen too many examples lately where play-on was (for me) the perfect call, but VAR still decided to request an OFR.

      Delete
    2. Perfect analysis, indeed we have too many examples of both points you mentioned, and that's not how VAR should work. More and more a VAR is appointed with a referee in many games, then a situation like this will be very rare to happen. But we must also add that it is not possible to have always referee and VAR that know each other, especially in international competitions.
Here Hernández Hernández pefectly knew what Mateu Lahoz had perceived on the pitch, while a VAR from another country could have invited to OFR.

    3. Like I mentioned above. Your arguments definitely convinces me that this ist at least a supportable call. Probably even the better decision

      Delete
    4. Yes, I agree with the analysis.
But: Shouldn't such situations be black and white? I mean, stepping on the opponent's foot after playing the ball is not a rare incident. Would it be too difficult to get a clear statement from the relevant authorities, whether such situations are a foul or not?

    5. Lahoz wasn't focused enough on yesterday's game

      Delete
    6. @Philipp S. yes, the problem stays when we consider the steps on foot as black and white, you are right. But in tis case I can't definitely say that this was a mandatory penalty, to be honest.

      Delete
    7. It would also be happy, if those situations were black and white no foul. Just some more clearness and less grey area.
It can't be right, that we have so many penalty situations, where both outcomes are supportable.
It feels like currently more than 75% of all potential penalties are in the grey zone, while it should be less than 25% IMO.

    1. Yes, I watched the game. No crucial mistakes, two teams focused on playing football. He allowed a lot fysical contact, which helped to let the game flow. Enjoyable to watch and suited the game and players very well. He never lost control.

He could have booked one of the Czech players in the first halve for a tactical foul. Maybe a strategic decision to not do so. In 2nd halve a Czech player obviously dived in the box. No other KMI's as far as I could see.
I'm not sure the AR's got the offsides right - this was not shown in replays.

    2. I was with family yesterday and the Rangers (vs. Sparta Prague) game was on the television, so without deeply focusing on the match, my impression was of a good performance in a normal diff. match.

I noted these two incidents as worthy of discussion:

56' - reckless challenge vs. SFP by Rangers no.31
      https://streamff.com/v/4767cc

79' - potential penalty to Sparta (tripping)

    3. Thanks Mikael
56' Interesting clips for me. I would say it is a rare instance where the force is not high enough for a RC, even though the point of contact says RC.
79' Not enough for a PK.

What is your oppinion on 56'?

      Delete
    4. Thanks Mikael! Awesome work.

'79 is the one I marked as a dive while watching it live. Now when watching it better, no simulation; there is some contact. Would have been a soft PK: player feels the contact and is falling down. No VAR stuff. If it was whistled, VAR wouldn't overturn it either.

Btw, I noticed in statistics that Makkelie didn't whistle a single penalty after ENG-DEN. This is quite remarkable (if you compare that to last season).

    5. 56' very harsh foul. It would be RC. This position is similar to Feguli's in the GAL-MAR match.

      Delete
    6. 56' - Ouch. For me borderline: a reckless dark YC. When watching the slowmotion, the point of contact is somewhere between foot/ankcle. The fact that the ankle sprains makes it look worse. IMO we shall apply the LOTG and not consider the impact of a foul.

  31. 'Funny' video on a Dutch football site (probably not viewable in other countries), but I like to mention it here as it is very rare footage from before the game in catacombs.

    https://www.voetbalzone.nl/doc.asp?uid=396881

You can clearly see and HEAR in the video that Raczkowski warns two PSV players in catamcombs, to not use their elbows. He states that he watched the first game and he didn't like that. Obviously prepared :D

    3. Making an analysis about this video we can say that it is a positive thing that referee has this level of communication and knowledge of the players, having already watched previous games, he is able to make his words accepted with a smile and I really think this is a good skill, of course it is clear that not all referees enter in this kind of communication in international games. But... there could be something to say: by making such statements referee could maybe give the idea of being a bit "biased" in terms of foul detection, he should see players all at the same level before a game. Not because there had been elbows in a previous game, this would mean that there will be others in the next one. But I repeat myself, this is not a criticism against Raczkowski, he is very experienced in international games and let's say "he CAN say it". However, I wouldn't suggest such interaction to referees at their first games, especially if they need to develop. Hope my point of view is clear.

    4. @Chefren
      I agree.
I Croatia there were examples when the referee said in the tunnel before a hot clash something like "guys, I wont tolerate dissent, say one word and I immediately issue a YC!" or to a specific attacker "I know that you like to fall in the box very often so please try to control that a bit today :)."

But for that you need to have at least 5-10 seasons of experience and a good authority and communication skills.

In this particular case, I would say that it was a great piece of prevention and communication.
