  1. Most important matches for Brisard (battle for first place), Kovacs and Higler (battles for second place).

  2. For the first time, third category referees appointed:

    BEL Bram Van Driessche
    DEN Morten Krogh
    GEO Goga Kikacheishvili
    ISL Helgi Mikael Jónasson
POR António Emanuel de Carvalho Nobre
    SUI Urs Schnyder
    SVK Michal Očenáš

  3. I wonder what happened to Kruashvili after Under 21 final, definitely strange to see him out from everything, maybe the appointment for that final was the maximum he could reach, I can't find other explanation.
Now we see another referee from Georgia as Category 3, as Euro Soccer Referee pointed out.
For the rest, we can just highlight Kovacs appointment in Rome.
I think he is the first Elite referee in this tournament?
The mistakes by Greek team in Roma - Bodo were too blatant...

    1. Chefren Orel Grinfield got a match On match day 3 I think

    2. Yes you are right! So we can say that this was for starting again after a long stop, while Kovacs is the first "technical" appointment of an Elite in this competition.

    3. G.Kruashvili had a game in MD3 conference league, think about the next match will be in MD6 also.

    4. Kovacs became a trusted referee for Italian teams.

  4. Still any Spanish 2nd cat appointed in ECL. Kept for MD6?

  5. Well, my initial guess was that it ECL will serve as a test for "upper" 2nd category referees, but something very strange has happened because we have some category 3 now and some category 2 with previous debut in EL have had only 1 appointment so far in less prestige competition.

    1. Indeed! So, EL for ELite/"upper" 1st cat, and ECL for standard 2nd cat/3rd cat. And "upper" 2nd cat, as VAR/AVAR in UCL/EL. SO, when are going to be tested, considering that in December upgrades/downgrades are expected? Strange...

  6. Chefren do you think for Andorra or Gibilterra ref some possibility in Matchday 6?

    1. Yes, why not? However, Jason Lee Barcelo got YL this week, considering that very often appointments are made on double matchdays basis, maybe this could exclude him from MD6, but of course we can't know. Very likely to see the referee from Andorra, and, as reported some weeks ago on the blog, maybe the time will come for a referee from Armenia. I still think that for San Marino is more difficult than other countries.

    2. Thank you, we will see MD6. About SMR: few possibilities for the quality of the referees or for the low level of their football system?

    3. The second option you mentioned!

    4. I thought that Luca Barbeno is quite close to UECL debut. Maybe even closer than Barcelo and Armenian referees? He's maybe not a top manager but a solid referee. In addition, if I was committee, I would observe Ghaltakhchyan closely. I saw him in Armenian SuperCup and he has many skills of top referees.

    5. I agree. Barbeno is quite old at 40, but he did a lot of matches in recent years, including an interesting an U21 qualifier and many UEFA Youth League matches.

    6. Why SMR team don't have matches in Italy too? For example in B or C division? Do you know AR careers?

  7. How was that not handball against Rudiger? Also clear foul in there too.

  8. Second YC absolutely correct by Carvalho Nobre, I didn't watch the first one.

  9. Very difficult match in Prague between Slavia and Feyenoord. Gestranius doesn't convince me on the pitch and he doesn't get trust from players. Strange situation where a player from Feyenoord got a YC and this was changed into a RC after input from, I assume the fourth official.

    1. Very strange! Gestranius was close and the FO or AR was much further away. RC acceptable though

  10. AR flagged at 2-0 Rennes-Vitesse, player Vitesse stop defending. Then flag down and Rennes scores..

    1. Oeff, and it was a clear offside so AR’s signal was correct in the end… The goal was not scored immediately after the flag, Vitesse gained possession of the ball again, but definitely not good refereeing.

    2. Indeed. Not a good clip but you can see the reaction of the defender and the goal here

Some remarks, did the player in offside touch the ball? It is not clear, otherwise I could understand why referee overruled assistant referee, but still one can discuss as the ball passed between player's legs so he made an active movement.
Then, we must also say that the action lasted for a while before scoring, players should have been more than aware that offside flag had been "annulled". It was not immediate.
      Still, a poor management, though.

    4. I’m I mistaken or is it really, really clear that the player in offside position plays (backheels) the ball?

      Delete
    5. Yes indeed it is clear I rewatched. Definitely strange that AR accepted the overrule. Other option is that he changed idea, but why, on a correct call? The offside position is clear according to video.

    6. I believe that Eskas thought the ball was played by a defender: The replay clearly showed that it did not.

      A serious mistake.

  11. Excellent advantage by Kovács before 1-0.

    1. And a few minutes ago, I think a supportable penalty, but not very clear. VAR would have supported.

  12. Jablonec - AZ Alkmaar
54' Schüttengrüber misses an, IMO, clear red card for SFP.

    1. That cannot be anything else than a RC, no doubt whatsoever! Late studs-up tackle with high intensity far above the ankle. Remarkable that only a YC was issued, while the referee seemed to have an open line of vision. Very clear mistake unfortunately.

  13. Poor performance of georgian referee in Kairat-Basel, someone should make videos. Esp. min 73 (clear penalty missed), 77-78 (mass confrontation) and after final whistle.

    1. Agree. Also penalty awarded in 43' is wrong decision for me.

  14. 53' of Mura-Tottenham, Nobre seemed to be very angry and even looks like he kicked(!) a Mura player.

    3. Slavia Praha - Feyenoord: I don't understand how another official can have a better view on this incident than Gestranius? Very strange, unless he changed idea by himself. RC is supportable, but I think more YC here, so original decision was OK.

      Delete
    4. The missed RC by Schüttengrüber is shocking: he was even in a good position to spot the point of contact. Very serious mistake, too lazy approach to a crucial incident.
