I don't know if it's the same for you, but I want to share that.
ReplyDeleteHere in Italy both the national TV and the PAY TV miss always the toin coss before games, because, exaclt in that moment, they air the so called "super spot". I'm really angry for that, no chance to see the officials before kick off and that's happening for almost all big tournaments in recent times... one must download the game from a foreign broadcaster and then he can watch that...
On Brazil, appers chefren. Everything normal here
DeleteIn Germany you see it most of the time (in public TV), but if a game is shown in private TV (like RTL) they often show their TV spots until kickoff. Yes, I agree, it is very sad when they don't show it to us
DeleteIt's the same in Germany, if the broadcaster is allowed to show advertisements.
DeleteLuckily, the public broadcasters aren't allowed to do ads after 20:00 (and not at all on Sundays), so we can see at least some of the coin tosses and referee presentations.
Here in Spain, with the exception of the opening game, I've missed the coin toss in every game cause the broadcast is busy showing some random advertising spot.
DeleteIn Indonesia same also.. jump to commercial break and show it back on 30 sec after kick off
DeleteHere in NL this does not happen, the whole tournament is broadcast by a public broadcaster and as soon as they switch to the live match (5-10 mins before kick-off) there are no ads anymore until half-time or until the match is over. So we get to enjoy all ref presentations :)
DeleteThe English broadcast (FOX) doesn't show walkouts, anthems, or the coin toss. The broadcast basically starts at kickoff.
DeleteAnd I highly dislike this! Because, I for one truly enjoy the entire pageantry that takes place before matches.
Crystal clear YC now missed, maybe even VAR stuff for RC?
ReplyDeleteWay more red than yellow that's for sure.
DeleteAnd nothing at the end 😉
DeleteI wouldn't go for red because he played the ball and the contact is more of an accident but it is at least yc for sure. So that's an early miss for Vincic.
DeleteYes, in my opinion this foul was similar to the Scottish foul against Germany, and should be RC dor SFP. Why didn't VAR call Vincic for OFR?
DeletePossible YC for reckless challenge, after having played ball, clear contact on opponent, but not easy to see. Nevertheless, I think Vincic whistled the foul.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you guys found these refs pre match photos? Uefa posted them somewhere?
ReplyDeleteNormally on Getty Images
DeleteWay too much leniency and talking.
ReplyDeleteMatch could boil over if Vincic continues like that.
And now YC to team captain,Donnaruma...
ReplyDeleteIs that avout new guidelines?
Rosetti explained that for teams with captains who are goalkeepers (Italy and Slovenia), a second player of movement must be nominated.
DeleteItaly "appointed" Jorginho, so Donnarumma not allowed to talk to referee, but it seems he didn't know that..
And on top of that he is not allowed to leave the penalty area as being goalkeeper.
Delete14': Vincic stopped the game for a injury after a delay, he should have done that before, one can't explain why he allowed Spain action to go and then he chanded idea.
ReplyDeleteThen, Donnarumma was booked for protests, let's remember the Italian player allowed to talk to referee is Jorginho, and it seems Donnarumma doesn't know about that rule, thinking to be allowed to do that to referee. I'm not surprised, knowing his level...
Or Rosetti didn't explain it well to the Italian team. ;)
DeleteThe talking to the referee is not a RULE. Its a directive from UEFA.
ReplyDeleteIt is an authorised trial by the IFAB, which UEFA has decided to apply in the EURO. IMO it is against the spirit of just about everything to run 'trials' in the biggest competition there is (at the continental level), but it's more than a "directive".
DeleteVinčić should have given an early YC to stop this aggressive tacklings and fouls. 1-3 missed YCs already
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Vincic lacked a little empathy towards Donmarumma. If he is the captain and the outfield player to speak to the referee is Jorginho, the Slovenian should have given a verbal warning to avoid another complaint. At least I see it that way.
ReplyDeleteI agree, since it's not written in the LoTG, he could have easily given him a warning and if he does it again the show a YC, especially since it's a new directive and players are still getting used to it
DeleteAgree. The fouls before were more worth a YC than that. But we don't know what Donnarumma said, maybe it was rude
DeleteVincic tries to act like a machine, he has no empathy and even not any sensitivity for match athmosphere and character. That always hinders him from being a topreferee, I never saw him different. Sorry to say that...
DeleteNow Morata with small protests.
ReplyDelete34' another possible YC, reckless kick, with a certain force.
ReplyDeleteNow another,SPA.36'
DeleteToo much leniency.
The follow-through studs tackle from 6'. Rosetti was clear about such challenges: if the ball is played and significant contact with an opponent follows, the standard is yellow card. That's why VAR didn't intervene.
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/a11ade
Wow, really bad tackle. Certainly more red than yellow. In spite of playing the ball, he makes flush contact with the studs, using a straight leg, in the middle of the opponent's shin. I have it as a red card and (with the caveat that I'm not familiar with the instructions from UEFA) I am surprised the VAR didn't intervene.
DeleteIt's and SFP RC for me as well, for the exact same reasons you mentioned, but I think ESR is right and UEFA probably expects a YC here (unfortunately).
DeleteI think Vincic forgot her yellow cards, surprising there are no cards yet
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about fouls, donnaruma got a card
Delete43' SPA by Calafiori,Le Normand would be way ahead...Also not punished.
ReplyDeleteClement (4O) to Italian coaches: "Sit down! Sit down! .... speaking."
ReplyDeleteI must comment on jersey color, the kit Mr.Vincic is wearing is hideous, a golden sheen, looks awful. The Spain goalie is wearing black, so refs could wear the sky Blue kit. He also seems a bit out of sorts, nothing technical wrong, but just a little jittery.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's quite ugly and grim
DeleteLooks cool and unusual. I want to see a white jersey.
DeleteIIRC, last time a white jersey was used at Euro '92 by Kurt Röthlisberger (CIS - SCO, 0:3)
DeleteThe Gold jersey is the best looking out of all of them. Followed by the bright orange (almost reddish) jersey and then the fluorescent neon yellow jersey. The other are MEH at best. With black being the boring uninspiring choice.
DeleteAnd now Rodri gets YC,he was warned 15 minutes before...
ReplyDeleteBravo for something.
It's good to punish the technical, but you must punish the physical too.
ReplyDelete1st half is over.
ReplyDelete18 fouls, plenty SPA-s, 1 Orange Card offence, nervous players.
Result-2 YC's to players for protestation.
Wow.
Even Guida would.be proud of leniency that Vincic is providing.
Missed YC's in 6' 34', ,43'...Atleast.
Shaky and unassured Vincic as usual. Fails to show yellow card when necessary 6', 36 and to Calafiori 43' but unnecessarily books Donnarumma and Rodri. That was his exact performance in the first half of UCL final. Some things never change.
ReplyDeleteThere he showed YC to Vinicius for foul on GK, looks like he overreacts on players screaming and pressure from teams.
DeleteIf Vincic wants to be as good or better than Skomina, he will have to change some things in his behavior in relation to the criteria of a match. He already has two finals under his belt, but we cannot forget the controversial Inter x Barcelona in which Joan Laporta sued UEFA regarding the Slovenian's performance in that match.
Delete+1!
Delete20 seconds in and right away YC...Rightfuly so.
ReplyDeleteExcellent alertness, so early on. That said, a clear YC
DeleteFully agreed, but here we have an issue of consistency. Too many similar situations went unpunished in the 1H. And this is something that could be observed in Vinčić's last two games: a too lenient 1H followed by tightening the grip in the 2H. It's not a positive thing at all, at least for me.
DeleteDespite the inconsistency no other option left here. I thought this was an extremely nasty foul… I can’t tell if it were a deliberate action, but Rodri’s knee could have been injured seriously. Cristante with his left leg steps on Rodri’s foot, locking it into the ground, and then putting pressure onto that same locked leg. Things could have ended worse for Rodri here.
DeleteI have to say I don't like this 1H performance at all. Vinčić is too lenient disciplinary wise, even going to extremes. Foul detection is ok, but the severity assessment and game reading in regard to them not at all. I've counted 4 YCs I deem as missed: 6' (ESP20, very reckless tackle), 34' (ESP17, reckless high kick), 36' (ITA2, SPA) and 43' (ITA5, SPA). Actually, the one in 6' is, IMO, a RC for SFP (contact with studs in the middle of the shin, a somewhat straight leg), however UEFA probably expects a YC because of the ball played before. Vinčić talks too much, but his game is on edge of boiling over; this is not how prevention should work, IMO.
ReplyDeleteMissed corner kick for Spain 60', theme of this year's Euros so far but this one was quite hard to tell tbf
ReplyDeleteWhere was this performance in the 1st half?
ReplyDeleteNow clear stamp that could have been booked.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been 2nd YC to Le Normand, but we saw players get booked for challenges like that.
Referee performances like this are so bad for the sport.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, you have the Referee Committee touting how they're going to clamp down on dissent and overall boorish behavior.
On the other hand, we've got referee's who are allowing a lawless free for all and who are obviously doing everything they possibly can to not show any cards. Unless it's for dissent of course.
But I knew that it was too good to be true. The tournament was inevitably going to deteriorate and good back to the garbage football and Mr. Nice Guy I'm only here to ensure that there is a spectacle refereeing. Not to actually enforce the Laws of the Game, which are just SUGGESTIONS nowadays anyway.
SPA from Cristante ,not punished cause he has YC already.
ReplyDeleteHe has lost all control tonight very poor several YC offences not punished
ReplyDeleteAbsolute pathetic scenes from Dani Carvajal, should have recieved YC/RC for that pathetic
ReplyDeleteSo you mised the studs on the ankle then?
DeleteHe ref. Only the captain can talk to you. You have forgot to give so much players a YC
ReplyDeleteAnd now 4 minutes added time, what a joke 😀
ReplyDeleteUsual Vincic so far, really poor performance but he never gets KMI so it enver seems too bad
ReplyDeleteisn't this penalty for Italy??
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletefor me, the situation on the corner kick (85-86') was really close to a PK for Italy, spanish player hold the shirt too long for me
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Vincic was bad today, there is no standard for cards, and he always talks to the players
ReplyDeleteClassic shaky (more than shaky) performance by the Slovenian. Commitee will be able to say no crucial mistakes and that's fine, but there are several mistakes some of which are very evident.
ReplyDeleteVery strict with punishing according to Rosetti guidelines, but by far lenient about the severity of offenses. Hard to say that he has a connection with players. This has been always him for me, not a referee from the very top of UEFA, but still reliable for certain games.
But without any feeling for match, athmosphere, not being able to adapt your style to the character of game, acting like a discipline-machine when following new guidelines concerning possible dissent, but ignoring or missing some clear fouls and missing mandatory YCs by that, if not even RCs, having no empathy for players, but putting yourself in a pathetic way in the middle of communication (esp. before corners) , heating up the match instead of being friendly, but strictly clear, sry, that is not at all enough for being Elite!!!

Now Croatia - Italy very big game, one should higlight that today's game, if Spain win was expected, could be considered less important than the next one...
ReplyDeleteAlbania Spain also.
Delete2 very emotional teams with one that still has chamce to go through...
Whole group is in chaos.
Croatia - Italy - ref will be Makkelie.
DeleteZwayer (md1), Vincic (md2), Orsato, Manzano (ita, spa), Marciniak (2 days from md2) are out. There are not many options....
Yes, Makkelie should be the favourite.
DeleteKovacs and Tello are the alternatives, I think.
Too lenient.
ReplyDeleteTo add, possible penalty following a corner, holding, and I think with ball in play, but not so many replays and the feeling that VAR didn't consider it as important. Can't say more.
ReplyDeleteClear holding, if you ask me. Camera behind the goal showed that.
DeleteAs Soares Dias showed in Denmark v England earlier. Few if any referee's (including VAR's) have to intestinal fortitude (guts, balls, courage etc...) to whistle a penalty in these situations.
DeleteMost will take the easy way out by whistling a foul against the attacking team (like Soares Dias did) without hesitation or turn a blind eye to what is clearly happening.
What's worse is that referee's spend entirely too much time endlessly warning players on each and every set piece. But if you don't actually something. Their words are worthless and without effect.
Sad to say it, but I have seen so much holding in this tournament already, without anything happening that I must conclude, it is inofficially accepted already.
DeleteCarvajal having a moan about a booking for an incredibly obvious deliberate late foul, ridiculous
ReplyDeleteToo much trying to manage constant fouling in the area, just deal with it when it happens after a point
ReplyDeleteI posted this above. Sorry for the repost. By it ahs to do with your excellent point of view.

+1
DeleteOnly ten minutes of watching the game and I did not see a referee who was in control.
ReplyDeleteWay to much talking. And way to less cards
ReplyDeleteMy Only Question is HOW ON EARTH is Slavko Vinčić an elite referee they gave him Champions league final and now the biggest match on the tournament so far zero personality inconsistent calls and he forgoted his cards i think because there was a lot of YC cleaaaar asf , i just don't understand the only is because ceferin is slovenian like vincic
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteVincic lost all control, missed a penalty, missed two 2YC (Le Normand and Cristante) and showed that he shouldn't anywhere near a big game like this. His tournament should be over.

ReplyDeleteApparently she is not a Skomina, there is some truth in what she says, she is a completely inflated normal ordinary referee, Ceferin and of course Rosetti also have a share in this.
DeleteIf he wanted, he could go home after this game because maybe he doesn't care about criticism. It's already done, Real won the title, it's better to ask for a vacation. Insecure and confused referee.
DeleteSorry, typo
DeleteI think Makkelie will be on Croatia v Italy match with Nyberg on the other Albania v Spain match.
ReplyDeleteAdvice: I'm entitled to my opinion thanks
DeleteI really don't get what Rosetti sees in Vincic to give him so many big matches, most of the times I watch him, I'm left unsatisfied with his performance and tonight was no different. 3 Clear YC's missed in the 1H 6' even bordering on a RC, improved 2H but his interactions with players when trying to stamp his authority at corners etc just comes across as forced and unnatural.
ReplyDeleteGood Performance by Slavko Vincic. Good and strcit punishing according to UEFA, and that what I like. No serious problems, could be more YC for Spain players, but, at the end of day, really OK. But, something that is strange for me is that all of you speak that Vincic hasnt have relation with players, what is totally opposed to Orsato who have top relations with players on field, and that also no good. Could I know what is satisfactory level of relations with players?
ReplyDeleteI think you followed the wrong game. Vincic irritated the course of the match much more than he helped.
DeleteYou have right to your opinion and I respect that.
DeleteBut tell me what strict part did Vincic show other than booking Ridri and Donarumma for protests?
In terms of punishing fouls, plenty of them went unpunished and if that's the line that Rosseti wants, then every match we would have players being injured...
After great 1st decision in 2H and early booking,he decided to again be himself and just book whatever is necessary.
ReplyDeleteCompletely ignoring Bastoni"s,Carvajal's,Le Normand's and some other players ridicoulous behaviour.
Corners were impossible to take, clear SPA from Cristante not given YC just beacuse he already had YC.
Only talking,talking and talking.
3-4 missed YC's in 1st half just added fuel to the fire in the 2nd half.
And 4 minutes of added time after all that?!?!?!?!?
Injuries, timewasting, 3-4 corner kicks delays, the list goes on and on.
Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.
After watching today's masterclass from Kovacs I will have to accept that performances like Kovacs would be rarity and more leneinand not brave enough refs we will see as the tournament goes on.
That goes for Vincic,Orsato,Guida and some others whose goal here is to finish the game under 3-4 cards.
Clearly someone pulls the strings for Vincic, who is a an average (at best) ref.
ReplyDeleteDoes not intervene when he has to and players don't take him too seriously. The fact that he is an elite ref is just shocking and shows everything is possible when you know the right people.
There are a lot of refereeing experts on this site, it's often brought up and I would like to know more about the characteristics of the 19 EURO referees (for example, whether they are more lenient or more strict, etc. I don't know much about it, I didn't find a page about it here so far, and I would like to find out more. For example, I've read Here in the last few days that Vincic and Guida are very lenient). Would love to know the characteristics of the European Championship referees.
ReplyDeleteWhat worries me is that while this might be (one of) the worst performances of this tournament, the general level of refereeing is not very high at all.
ReplyDeleteOnly Kovacs, Nyberg and Tello performed really well in my opinion. All the other referees had some difficulties, technical errors, foul detection errors etc.
I would say Meler performed really well as well. Yes he had two VAR interventions including one OFR, but it was a literally impossible handball to detect in real time so I don't think you can blame him for that at all
DeleteI'm sorry to say this, but I think we have just watched the first clearly bad performance in this tournament, at least in my opinion.
ReplyDelete2H started well, with an early YC to ITA16 in 46', however Vinčić soon continued down the same (wrong) path. Once again, I've managed to count 4 more or less clear YCs not given. With the 4 I mentioned in the previous comment about the 1H, that's EIGHT (8) missed YCs in a single match. I dare to say all of them were more than preferable: 63' (ITA9, step on foot), 73' (ESP3, step on foot), 88' (ITA16, SPA) and 89' (ITA19, reckless studs on ankle after the whistle). Making things even worse, two of those cards would have been 2YCs if given (73', 88'). Of course, some may say this is exaggeration on my part and the match would have ended in a disaster with so many cards given, but I actually think quite the contrary: with some early cards in the 1H, Vinčić would have set the tone for the rest of match, drawn a clear line and I'm more than sure players would have respected that. After all, they were just doing what was allowed to them. This is not how prevention works, far from that (and I speak this as a police officer, prevention is my life).
On the positive side, I cannot say his foul detection was bad, but he failed to properly assess their severity and context (SPA being an unsolvable problem tonight). The YCs he eventually gave were all correct for me: 46' (ITA16, reckless tackle), 69' (ESP3, reckless/SPA), 90+6' (ESP2, reckless tackle). I have the same opinion about the two YCs from the 1H, both given for dissent: 15' (ITA1) and 45+1' (ESP16). The one for Donnarumma was especially interesting: IMO, it was absolutely inappropriate from him to run all the way from his goal just to complain, no matter if he is the captain of the team. Rosetti's guidelines were clear, and this YC is one of very rare instances of praise I have for Vinčić tonight (everyone is free to disagree, of course).
Unfortunately, the level of control and player management presented by Vinčić was equally bad, IMO. Just look at his "prevention" on set pieces: it's literally non-existent. For example, we can analyse the warnings before the corner for ITA in 86': endless talking without any real effect on the players; they just seem to ignore him completely, doing whatever they were doing a few seconds before, and such behaviour was visible throughout the whole match. I'm sorry, but it really looks bad. His own leniency literally stripped him off his own authority. At least that's my feeling after watching this game. I also cannot say he managed to establish a proper connection with the players, as one more thing that was missing in this performance.
Lastly, after reviewing the potential penalty for ITA in 86', I'm more and more convinced that the whole crew, including VAR, missed a pretty clear holding by Carvajal which eventually brought down the Italian player. I need to review the situation again, but my first conclusion would be: a missed penalty and missed VAR intervention.
To conclude: it is very difficult to find positive points in this performance (even the added time management was deficient, after all). As I said in my first sentence, this was the first performance of this tournament I will consider "bad".
And he will not be punished for that.
DeleteInstead KO game is for sure in the waiting for him .
I guess he deserved it. 😀
@Dukat: it’s a pleasure to read your extensive and nuanced analysis. Keep going.
DeleteThere are many harsh-toned comments by people here who seem to forget that referees under heavy pressure and people of flesh and blood (some of them might even read here…)
There is too much focus on the negative, instead of highlighting the positive and/or deep-analysing how a referee can improve certain aspects.
With this comment, I bid adieu. In the past few days I truly enjoyed reading some of your comments and points of view because the officiating had started so promisingly.
ReplyDeleteBut inevitably, as we've seen at all recent tournaments. Things always take a turn for the worse for the referee's.
It's become quite clear to me, that the refereeing is regressing back to the lawless, overly lenient, too player friendly garbage level that is supposedly good for the "spectacle". And for me, it's no longer fun watching the games and I refuse to be part of the problem.
I would love nothing more than to watch a tournament in which the officiating remains the same from the opening match all the way through to the Final. If players get cautioned, sent off, or miss games because of card accumulation. Oh well, too bad! Act right on the pitch and you won't get booked or sent off. It is not the referee's job coddle the players and disregard the Laws of the Game in the process.
With that said, the Ref Comm can take their pre tournament directives/instructions and put them where the sun don't shine. You can't tout clamping down on certain aspects of the game. While at the same time encouraging your referee's to completely disregard the Laws of the Game. And asking them to be overly lenient, lawless, and toothless on the pitch. Which in turn leads to referee's allowing their games to deteriorate into ugly and unattractive free for alls.
Thank you all for you time. Arbiter out.
You said everything..
DeleteInstead of game management, refs worry about theirs and players image, will they play, how many cards they have, accumulation and so on.
Sad to see that.
I can remember prime example in Qatar.
MD1 we were all praising refs.
Number of cards and punishments were astonishing and rightly so.
As the tournament progressed, more and more leniency and more protecting players to not have accumulated cards.
There I only see 2 solutions:
1)Referees needs to referee games, not manage how much cards players have
2)UEFA should extend number of cards needed to be suspended on 3,or that cards are erasing after Group Stage.
That wsy we have more relaxed players and refs.
Until these problems are sorted we will have performances like Vincic's.
My MD3 predictions

Of course, in groups D-F, we don't know yet, which one is the more important game and we haven't seen the first performances of Taylor, Siebert and Marciniak, so there is some uncertainty in these factors.
Surprised to see you think both Kruzliak and Guida will get another game. I think they were both planned for only one and there's no reason to change that

why to send Kovacs for a low game in MD 3, because Spain vs Albania is similar with Netherlands vs North Macedonia in Euro 2020. I expect Kovacs in Group D or F.

@Kruzliak: I think, his first performance simply deserves another game.
Delete@Guida: Here I am less convinced, but I rather expect another appointment, because he got a good game early on and wasn't bad in it.
@Kovacs: Yes, not the best game, but I think, Albania has a better chance than MKD in 2021. It just worked out that way in my predictions, but I agree that he is a candidate for bigger tasks, e.g. also CRO-ITA.
@Zwayer: I don't assume that, but maybe you are right.
@Philipp: At least, he didn't get any England, Dortmund or now Real game since this "incident".
DeleteHe knows if he plays his cards right - given his nationality he will get at least a semi.
ReplyDeleteCeferin is watching.
Plays cards to not show cards 😉
DeleteAn old friend (also a mentor when I was a young referee) watched Argentina v Canada tonight. He reached out to me after the match to talk about it and about the referee (Jesus Valenzuela - VEN).
ReplyDeleteI told him that I hadn't watched it because I decided to not watch any Copa America matches. I explained my reasoning and he understood and fully supported my choice.
He then went on to tell me that I was not wrong in my perception of the officiating. He said that Valenzuela's performance exemplified everything that is wrong with so called modern refereeing and its modern referee's. With the actions at minutes 70 to 73 as a prime example.
I watched that game, most of it, and I am not so sure in that point. We have to accept another culture, bringing another style of refereeing, which means, to show YCs only, when someone fouls deliberately, but to accept, that the foul as part of fight for the ball and even dangerous attacks with that aim are part of the show. Like it or not, Valenzuela followed that line, still showed a bunch of YCs, but let the game flow and obviously the players liked that style. With a typical European there would have been minimum 2 RCs, many more FKs, but less dynamic. The biggest problem in refereeing are not wrong lines, but NO lines and a lack of foul det.
DeleteFrankly speaking, I am astonished by the level of comments here on this blog. Specially from Croatians M and Dukat. Is it something between Slovenia and Croatia?
ReplyDeleteI was at the match yesterday and nobody talked about the referee after the match. All yc looked excellent from the tribune. I don't know if it was shown on the TV but Donarumma ran 30 meters to the referee to protest. Total control through the whole match. Excellent movements.
This was my last post here. Thank you for a lot of educational content in the past years. I would recommend admins to focus more on the valuable content and not limit this blog only to commenting the referees. These comments are obviously influenced by hatred and jealousy.
Thanks, Florian. Continue writing here, please. We need more objectivity in this blog
DeleteXavi you speak to me from the soul
DeleteI would love to write more, but my English isnt good enough, sorry.
DeleteSorry Florian, its a pity seeing you leaving, but your view on Vincics performance, well, is quite exclusive.
DeleteWhat a shame this game was ! Vincic completely lost the plot in the first half and left too many contacts unpunished. Probably for me the worst performance during this EURO, but I still think he will get a KO match as he has refereed a lot of big clashes.
ReplyDeleteAbout the Donnarumma YC, it is important to underline that both Italian public and PAY TV yesterday, and the most important sport newspaper today (La Gazzetta dello Sport) didn't know more about the detail explained by Rosetti in press conference, and they all reported, live yesterday and today on the articles, that it is very harsh if a captain is booked. They all know about the strict guidelines by committee (but no more than that). So we should draw conclusion that if the communication is not efficient, the only people informed about the important news of refereering, are the ones who read this blog. Rosetti also wrote a letter to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as you remember, but then nothing followed about keeping updated. That's in my opinion unacceptable, all people paid for following football games at EURO totally unaware of that.

By the way, he and Ceferin... Well, yes, this HAS influence. If not, he would be in cat. 2, not more. Its sad...
ReplyDeleteThis is a good time to add my World Cup 2022 anecdote.
ReplyDeleteMany people were thinking Stephanie Frappart did not deserve to referee WC games. Here is a comment from this blog after her performance.
"Ref1 December 2022 at 23:33
Chapeau to Stéphanie Frappart !
After many doubts about her ability to handle a WC match, she proved tonight that she has nothing to envy to many officials in this World Cup. I read on this blog that this appointment was not based on meritocracy, but certain officials from Zambia or New Zealand would be well advised to take inspiration from her performance.
Congratulations ! "
To this I add a true story. My German friend watched all matches. He is the kind of fan that purchases a good big plasma screen for watching football so he could really see the game well. During Germany-Costa Rica match he noticed a very large player being clearly addressed and fully controlled in front of the goal by a very small person. He was impressed by this referee, but was very shocked that when he finally saw the face that it was in fact a woman. Before that he had no idea, because he cares about good football not doesn't follow referees. He said he would be glad to have her referee matches in the future.
I come to this blog to learn, and I watch the matches differently as a result of how much I have in fact learned. Even I was shocked by the lack of yellow cards, especially for the dangerous defensive high kick. Perhaps I am not the only one who thinks Ms Frappart would have done much better last night. I saw this because of her performance history in WC, not because she happens to be a woman.
