From what I saw at this championship, I select 12 referees that should officiate at knock out stage:
ReplyDeleteDaniele Orsato
Szymon Marciniak
Michael Oliver
Anthony Taylor
Facundo Tello
Istvan Kovacs
Glenn Nyberg
Artur Soares Dias
Halil Umut Meler
Felix Zwayer
Danny Makkelie
Slavko Vincic
Istvan Kovacs???
DeleteWithout Kovacs and Makkelie, I like your list...
DeleteIn a terms of performance
Orsato and Tello with those blunders would not be fair by any sort of means.
DeleteKovacs? Seriously!!!!!
DeletePrediction for first two games:
ReplyDeleteGermany-Denmark: Anthony Taylor
Switzerland-Italy: Szymon Marciniak
All referee that have their National Team in the “upper” bracket will work in the R16, whereas the referees with their NT in the “lower bracket” are more flexible and can work in a quarter-final.
ReplyDeleteExample: Turpin. The French NT are in the upper bracket and potentially play a quarter-final on July 5.
Therefore, they cannot save Turpin for a quarter-final on July 6, because there is a chance that France has already reached the semi-final.
Referees with country in the “lower” bracket are more flexible: Orsato, Taylor, Makkelie. Two of them might be saved for a potential Spain-Germany and Portugal-France.
In upper part: Vincic, Zwayer, Manzano, Turpin. They should slot into a R16 game first.
I understand what you are saying , however What's stopping Turpin doing a game on 6th July as from my understanding the winners of those matches avoid France in the SF
DeleteMy short term memory thought it was always avoided, at least recently :)
DeleteI checked and they avoided this at EURO 2020 and EURO 2016, however not at EURO 2012 where Pedro Proenca refereed a QF while Portugal was already qualified for the semi. And he stayed to wait for the SF results, and was assigned to the final. That would be pretty odd nowadays :)
Prediction 29 June
ReplyDeleteSwitzerland – Italy: Letexier
Germany – Denmark: Taylor
Has UEFA already decided who has to go home ?
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced that Taylor will be appointed so early. He had a game yesterday.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction
ReplyDeleteSwitzerland – Italy: Halil Umut Meler
Germany – Denmark: Arthur Dias
I predict Letexier and Oliver
DeleteInteresting that there is quite a significant delay in announcing the appointments. An emergency meeting with the referees could be the reason?
ReplyDeleteWurde Kovacs nach Hause geschickt?
ReplyDeleteI'm reading so many comments very harsh respect to the single referees, like as if one has not officiate just one match at outstanding level, he deserve to be sent home. I'm referring especially to Turpin, Orsato and Kovacs' judgement; the Romanian just few weeks ago (after UEL final and QF) was considered the best overall in the Uefa panel and today he has to be sent home. The same for Orsato and Turpin, all agree to appoint them as candidate for the final and now most of you already see them at home. Come on !!!! I guess that it needs more equilibrium; Turpin after the opening match, has fully recovered in his second match and Kovacs faced very challenging final minutes.
ReplyDeleteI would keep all of them and I would continue appointing them basing on their skill, competences and on what they have demonstrated on several matches non on only one specific
Why is 12 YCs wrong if all are deserved? Should he limit the number of cards and avoid issuing them, punching a player instead?
DeleteKovacs deserved himself a red card for acting out like a spoiled kid, thinking his cards are toys
DeleteSource?
ReplyDeleteOh. Well, that would be very grateful gesture by UEFA, after he handled one of the most challenging MD3 games.
ReplyDeleteSuiça x Itália
ReplyDeleteSoares Dias
Perfect, for all top referees tournament is over. I can not belive. Chefren please, stop this kind of speaking at the forum. Nobody here is real!
ReplyDeleteUnluckily, I can't stop people when they write that, can't do more than disallowing anonymous comments. In all major tournaments we have such false information always shared.
DeleteI can only say again, don't trust any web source, unless official release by UEFA.
Predictions 1/8: Oliver, Marciniak, Meler, Letexier, Nyberg, Makkelie, Zwayer, Soares
ReplyDeletePredictions 1/4: Tello, Orsato, Kovacs, Marciniak (again, because he only had 1 GS appearance)
Kovacs? Seriously!!!!!
DeleteAll referees have been sent home. 0 trios remaining in Germany :)
ReplyDeleteYes. It has been confirmed. All knock-out stage matches will be managed by VAR only. Source: UFO.
Delete:)
DeleteRosetti and co will suit up and take charge for the rest :D
DeleteExcellent, Chefren, you made excellent conclude about situation on fourm with someones!
DeletePrediction:
DeleteSUI-ITA: Kuipers
GER-DEN: Rosetti
In my opinion, all the appointments for the 1/8 finals are currently being determined.
ReplyDeleteMost likely, those who leave are also determined.
A lot of work, apparently not everything is unanimous. I can't explain the delay in any other way...
Predictions:
ReplyDeleteESP - GEO Nyberg
GER - DEN Meler
POR - SVN Orsato
FRA - BEL Oliver
ROU - NED Soares Dias
AUT - TUR Vincic
ENG - SVK Zwayer
SUI - ITA Letexier
I have concerns about Zwayer and England because of the dispute with Bellingham, as to my knowledge there was never a handshake between the two.
DeleteESP - GEO Dias
DeleteGER - DEN Oliver
POR - SVN Manzano
FRA - BEL Zwayer
ROU - NED Tello
AUT - TUR Orsato
ENG - SVK Nyberg
SUI - ITA Marciniak
@Chefren
DeleteLooks like you have hint which referees are sent home :)
Marciniak for SUI-ITA, Oliver for GER-DEN from UEFA.
ReplyDeleteTello and Peljto the Fourth officials
DeleteMarciniak for Italy and Oliver for Germany.
ReplyDeleteComments?
Tello as Fourth Official? I think it means his journey in the competition is over.
ReplyDeleteThink you may be right - like Hategan used as 4th up to and including semi's
DeleteWell, I was right for one ref and one native country! Probably they save Tello for one top 16 game, or one quarterfinal game.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, getting FO assignments, should rather mean that competition is over as main referee, but we will see...
DeleteIMO Tello will most probably be only FO and that's all.
DeleteI expect the same for Siebert or some "low profile" match if it is correct to call KO match low profile.
Well, I was wrong about the Polish, very good for Marciniak at this point, indeed, but then why using him in this way... they should have appointed him before with two GS and his big experience.
ReplyDeleteWith 19 referees and 36 group matches, there were always going to be some referees with only one group match, even if all performed excellently. Nobody performed so poorly in their first match that they had to be removed entirely, so Marciniak (being already a very known quantity) is a reasonable name to have 2nd game straight to KO rounds.
DeleteIf I remember correctly this is very like the manager of Webb at wc2014 he had one group game and then a r16
DeleteDoes this mean that Taylor won't be appointed again this Euro? Or will they still keep multiple refs from one country in the tournament (also from a nation that is still in the tournament)?
ReplyDeleteI can see a QF appointment for him.
DeleteFor me totally expected appointments. Think Marciniak if he has a good match will be saved for a SF at least! For Oliver, I have a feeling , it's a case of good tournament well done and here's a big appointment (Hosts) in a KO game - then potentially at most a 4th official appointment.
ReplyDeleteI think Neyberg and Letxier each one before Olympics.
ReplyDeleteMeler / Manzano -1
Rest five - Dias, Marciniak, Orsato, Oliver and Zwayer/ Tello
QF: Turpin, Taylor, Makkelie and Vincic.
And performance of round 16 and QF with country's position will decide SF and Final.
Turpin already with a good performance after a poor opening. If Marciniak with a good performance and his country already out ,he can be a better for SF.
We can highlight that Italy gets always the same referees, like Marciniak, Turpin, Makkelie, Zwayer, Vincic. There is never even a small "experiment" like it is often for other countries (Soares Dias, Nyberg, Meler among the alternatives...), and yes, some referees are not appointed on purpose.
ReplyDeleteOliver gets one of the hardest games in R16 IMO (host nation involved, and somehow a balanced game).
ReplyDeleteIt would be the last appeareance in this EURO for him, as upper-brackets QF will be probably masterclass games (POR-FRA and GER-ESP), and lowest brackets QF will involve England, Italy, or both.
This means Taylor is not assigned to any R16, cannot handle a QF as GER-ESP (hard to see two Englishmen in a row for Germany), or POR-FRA (too big game for him, and already had France in GS). Last chance for Taylor would be QF AUS/TUR v NED-ROU, that's my prediction.
About Marciniak I'm a little surprised, he's appointed for Italy and... you know Italians' attitude. Italy had Zwayer in the easiest game against Albania, then Vincic, Makkelie and now the Polish. I thought Marciniak was on his way home after 1-game-treatment by RefCom. Now I can think about something bigger for him, if he performs well in SUI-ITA, I can see him as back-up in case of Final with no Germany.
After his non award of the penalty in the Scotland v Hungary game (as well as the poor communication between him and his VAR team) Tello should be on a plane back to BA.
ReplyDeleteRevised change for me now for next set of games:
ReplyDeleteESP v GEO - Dias
ENG v SLK - Manzano or Nyberg
Impossible for Soares Dias. Portugal is on that side of the calendar and it doesn’t help that Portugal played Georgia
DeleteNot impossible at all, the winner of ESP v GEO plays the winner of GER v DEN.
DeleteHowever, I do concede that Por v Geo may be an issue.
I agree with Soares Dias and Nyberg, while Vincic would be my first alternative for ENG-SVK.
DeletePrediction 30 June
ReplyDeleteEngland – Slovakia: Nyberg
Spain – Georgia: Soares Dias
Are there any rules of thumb regarding knockout-stage referee assignments? Like for example, if one ref gets appointed a QF, he surely won't get a SF, etc.
ReplyDeleteNo, Brych had R16, QF and SF last time.
DeleteI am not surprised by the appointment od Szymon Marciniak,he did very well in the Romania-Belgium match,he is treated similary to the 2022 World Cup,where he also coached only group małych Denmark -France.Good Łuck to the Polish team!
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, there was a lot of discussion about Orsato and also VAR performance of Irrati after the SUI - GER game. Could it be interpreted that RefCom believes everything was handled correctly in that game, at least from VAR perspective, as Iratti was given another GER game even though it is "only" AVAR 2?
ReplyDeleteIndeed, very interesting appointment which could have been avoided. Focus was on Orsato in Germany and less on VAR intervention disallowing Germany‘s first goal, still very doubtful to appoint Irrati immediately after last controversial match.
DeleteFor me yesterday was a strange situation. Ok, you sent Siebert with Romania game, but VAR was Dankert, who works with Kovacs also in CL. It could be speculation that Dankert and Kovacs are friends. And also, Kovacs game between Czech vs Turkey could be avoided, but Refcom didn't know that Group C and D made chaos. Maybe for Hamburg game was suited more for Marciniak than Kovacs, and sent the romanian to Netherlands with Austria. Because it eas rumours that could helph Romania and Hungary if Turkey won. But it wasn't the case, because the result in the other game.
ReplyDeleteMakkelie seems like just deleting or deactivating his Instagram account. Must be because of constant verbal abuse he received
ReplyDeleteHabe ich auf meiner Makkelie Fanseite auch erhalten
DeleteTraurig
ENG - SLO: Gil Manzano
ReplyDeleteSPA - GEO: Makkelie
FRA - BEL: Taylor
POR - SLO: Orsato
ROM - HOL: Turpin
AUS - TUR: Soares Dias
Staying for later:
Delete- Letexier
- Vincic
- Zwayer
Wasn't Peljto supposed to go home after it was reported that he made a serious error with a substitution in his last game?
ReplyDeleteKwitakowski's reappointment to VAR for good play after the controversial goal scored by the Czech Republic yesterday is a complete fiasco. Some decisions are really funny
ReplyDeletethat's really interesting
DeleteNever ever clear and obvious mistake, to me it's quiet clear even that there is no foul comitted by Czech player, it's just two players going into a duel with eyes on the ball and the GK just drops it
DeleteOne mistake shouldn't be a reason anyway to break up a very established referee-VAR connection.
DeleteBREAKING NEWS! "UEFA have dismissed Spanish referees Gil Manzano and Hernández Hernández for the knockout phase of the Euros. They will now return to Spain. Only Martínez Munuera will continue as VAR" (Relevo).
ReplyDeleteNot surprising (if true), at least not in the case of Hernandez Hernandez with two clear penalties missed, and it's pretty clear that Spanish refereeing is not in a good state atm with both of their Elite referees being very underwhelming in recent times as well as no really trusted VAR.
DeleteI agree. And with Martínez Munuera staying it's safe to say that Facundo Tello will have at least one more match.
DeleteIf Hernández was sent home Tello needs to go home too.
DeleteHernandez also had that Greece vs Netherland match where he also had problems with penalties and VAR stuff.
DeleteVery strange to see him in near future in big matches.
Luis, how so? If Hernandez Hernandez is going home, there's no chance for Tello to stay.
DeleteIf both situations in HUN - SCO, as we can argue, have been assessed as clear interventions missed by VAR, before VAR assessment, one should still say that Argentinian referee missed them as well in the field. So in my opinion he will not appear again as main referee, and this will break the "courtesy" appointments between UEFA and CONMEBOL. So far, as long as possible, the guests from both confederations in big tournaments have always got a KO stage game, it seems in this case it will be unlikely after this Fourth Official assignment.
DeleteGil Manzano? Why? UKR-ITA or something else?
DeleteEduardo Iturralde González stating (it is not the first time) that Spanish federation needs a man inside the UEFA refereeing committee, well, I really don't understand, can anybody inform him that they have Velasco Carballo in this role?
DeleteIf Gil Manzano is really out, well, we can draw easy conclusion that committtee assessed a clear penalty in the famous UKR - ITA. The qualification of Ukrainian team after play off helped a lot and I think Gil Manzano got his ticket to EURO also for that, we can easily make a comparison between the treatment of Hansson after the famous handball, he attended WConly as reserve referee, but in that case the mistake had been very crucial in a era without VAR. Maybe today Gil Manzano would have worked only as fourth official or, more realistic, not called at all for the EURO, if Ukraine had failed to qualify.
Of course these are speculations, but... the future of the Spanish referee at the tournament was surely already decided.
Still strong belive that Tello will have one more game as referee!
Delete@Chefren: It seems to me that a key difference between World Cup 2010 and EURO 2024 is that in 2010 there were only 9 UEFA referees officiating games while now there are 18. With this number, it was hardly possible to completely ignore all Spaniards.
DeleteBut Gil Manzano got one of the bigger games on MD1 (turned out to be the group's top clash...). So I think, in case of a good performance there, he would have received more appointments. Instead he had the first negative media reaction to refereeing in the tournament.
DeleteAnother Euros without a Spanish ref in the KO? This is unfortunate if you ask me. Especially with Gil Manzano. He should have gotten another game. Other referees made mistakes and survived and I wonder why his own case is different.
ReplyDeleteAccording to IG Referee : Zwayer will referee between France and Belgium on Monday
ReplyDeleteNyberg and Letexier should be nominated in the round of 16 and then released to prepare for the Olympic Games, a competition in which they will go far.
ReplyDeleteCould happen. However I think, they should be kept as long as they are needed at the EURO independent from the Olympics.
DeleteThere is still more than week after the EURO final, so no real problem if they stay.
Surely Letexier and Nyberg will be excellent protagonists at the Olympics. If France is not in the final, I see Letexier as the number one favorite for the Men's Gold metal match.
