After Serbia - England, the "hidden" path continues for Orsato, SUI - GER is important only for Switzerland, but honestly we can say that they are already qualified as well, a draw would be enough against Germany and Scotland must win in all cases to put in danger Swiss qualification. I would say, maybe it's more important the game assigned to Tello.
ReplyDeleteCommittee member for Orsato, the first one appointed after Rosetti for the opener, I think this should say everything...
What does it say?
DeleteWell, Germany surely also wants to win the group to avoid playing against Italy in R16. Which also shows, that UEFA didn't care about the "loser probably plays Italy next" situation, when appointing Orsato. IMO, rightly so, because there are too many constellations to consider.
DeleteSo I am not sure, whether SCO-HUN wouldn't have been the more "hidden" game for him.
SUI and GER are both very calm national teams, one can't say the same for Scotland, even more after having read some comments by fans here on the blog. For sure more exposure in SCO - HUN for the referee.
DeleteThe fact that Germany wants to win the group doesn't care at all for committee, 100%.
So this means UEFA knows Orsato could manage difficult games but wants to save him for the important games (semifinale/finale)?
DeleteActually it means Orsato will 100% do the final if he succeeds in staying out of the headlines and Italy national team doesn’t manage to reach that 14th July Berlin game.
DeleteExactly the same as Kuipers three years ago, his name already written with pencil in the final appointment before the first game was played.
OK, good to know, and deserved as Kuipers and Orsato are some of the best and end their carreer with a Highlight.
DeleteWhat about Marciniak? How does the UCL incident influence his final round games chances?
Fritz I disagree. It shouldn’t be almost decided who gets the final before the tournament. That incident will likely mean Marciniak ends with a QF, but also he has had many finals recently
DeleteNormally I answer with a very firm “no” to the question of “should UEFA care about the possibility of the referee’s nation being the next opponent,” especially when there are many possibilities at a tournament like this.
DeleteBut in this case, with a Final candidate referee from the nation of the defending champions, and with the tables looking as they do, and (sorry Switzerland!) with one team much stronger than the other, I think it’s a different situation here. Orsato’s Final chances increase fairly significantly with a Swiss victory over Germany. It would’ve been better to appoint Orsato somewhere else IMO.
Yes, I had the two officials on the other games but with places pretty much secured now, then this makes sense.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Sajn observing.
Makkelie and Nyberg or Schrarer for me on Group B Games - leaning towards Nyberg on Spain v Albania.
Schärer was 4th official in CRO-ALB, so rather unlikely again group B. Therefore I agree with Nyberg/Makkelie.
DeleteI agree with you Nyberg most likely.
DeleteNyberg in Spain vs Albania
DeleteOne of Turpin/Kovacs in the Italy game?
Turpin is very unlikely
Delete- Letexier had CRO-ALB
- Turpin was 4th at ESP-ITA
- his first performance might be seen negatively by UEFA
Kovacs should indeed be an option.
Agreed realistically i can only see Kovacs the other option for Cro v Ita leaving Makkelie with potentially group C, however I see both French referees in that group
Delete@ Chefren: If I understand correctly, Switzerland already sealed the 2nd place with 4 points in group based on ‘mutual results’ (a win over Scotland)?
ReplyDeleteIf so, Switzerland-Germany is just a game for the group win.
I predict Turpin or Kovács in Croatia vs Italy
DeleteSwitzerland drew with Scotland, but goal difference is massive so theoretically you are right
DeleteAh yes, you are right. Thanks :)
DeleteScotland and Hungary should both win; in particular Scotland has a good chance to proceed if they end with 4 points in group. Could be enough.
Switzerland-Germany, honestly I expect there will be some agreement to patiently wait what happens in the other game.
It’s comparable with the final games in UCL group death 23/24 where Nyberg handled a calm BVB-PSG, with players reacting on the results in the more challenging game Newcastle-Milan. Therefore, a safe management for Orsato.
Tello has the more difficult game. Why? Both Scotland and Hungary desperately need to win. While for Germany and Switzerland it would be nice to win, but if not then it is not a big deal. There is a miracle required to happen in order for Switzerland to lose the second place.
ReplyDeleteOrsato is wrapped in cotton wool, like Kuipers 3 years ago. ;-)
DeleteMeanwhile, appointing e.g. Makkelie to Germany despite the football rivalry between NED and GER was far from sensible imo.
Not every referee gets the same sensible protective treatment. Remember how Brych and Mateu were managed at EURO 2021?
Now curious to see who will be assigned to Croatia v Italy. Potential sacrificial (and EURO ending) game for this referee.
If performance matters, it could be Kovacs. However, can see UEFA “sacrifice” one of Turpin/Makkelie after their first games.
And yes, Sajn as observer is surely a big hint for what is planned for the future. I am sure that there is a Com member who watch every single game, but having one oficially appointed is surely important.
ReplyDeleteHm, but also the previous observer in Frankfurt was Rizzoli and therefore not possible with Orsato.
DeletePlus, the committee is probably based in Frankfurt together with the referees.
So it could also have just been the most pragmatic solution.
Well, if Croatia vs Italy is a choice between Kovacs and Makkelie, it has to be the Romanian right?
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure who has the better reputation in Italian media. I know Makkelie is more experienced in such decisive ties. However, UEFA desperately needs a referee in a good flow for that game. Don’t underestimate the mental health of a referee. I’m not sure whether it is sensible to appoint a referee who just received some death threats by aggressive Hungarians fans.
Well, UEFA saying to Makkelie "We support you regarding all big decisions in GER-HUN, consider you as one of our top referees and therefore you get CRO-ITA" would certainly also be good for his mental health.
DeleteI truly believe CRO-ITA will be between Kovacs and Makkelie. For ALB-ESP, I imagine it will be Kruzliak.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion tomorrow we will know one of the most interesting appointment by committee so far. Crucial game, both teams will be 100% qualified with a win, Italy can also draw but I think it will be an open battle. You have to add the fact that it's Italy in such a game and when it comes to this national team, we know, there is big attention on referee, differently from other countries.
ReplyDeleteA short analysis of the candidates suggests us that the name should be one between Makkelie, Kovacs and Schärer. There aren't other referees available. While the Swiss is less likely than the two colleagues, and his appointment in case would be definitely a "boom" (but still, I don't think it will happen), the Romanian and the Dutch at moment have quite the same chances to be in charge of this game. Makkelie with his known reputation while officiating Italian teams, Kovacs was praised after the Europa League final. We will see.
I think it will be Makelie and not Kovacs. Croatia vs Italy is in Monday, Makelie had a game only wednesday, and Kovacs only thursday. And in Leipzig is Vassaras, but we know they could change cities.
DeleteTo add, in my opinion Albania - Spain will not be important at all for committee, said with respect, it's clear that Spain already qualified and the second team will come from the other game, in addition, clear difference between the two national teams, one can indeed expect also a name like Kruzliak for a second display.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, if you use Kovacs for Group B, which referee would be for Group D, where you can’t use 4 refs, Turpin, Letexier, Makelie and Marciniak. In Group F, it’s not big problem, where are Portugal and Turkey.
ReplyDeletePredistion 24 June
ReplyDeleteAlbania – Spain: Kružliak
Croatia – Italy:Makkelie
