So, Tello will start like it happened for Rapallini at EURO 2020 (Ukraine - North Macedonia), a debutant team in a rather very low profile game. The management by committee is 100% the same as previous edition, they want to see him before something more.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I think that Guida gets even more as one could have guessed as first game: one could say still not a real top clash, but surely a middle one with a rather upper trend. Vassaras as observer, I remember he observed Guida several times in past. The Italian referee continues his journey without any committee member, at least officially, observing him, and that's surely a fact. In a game like this as EURO debut, after all the path, a committee member watching him could have been more than expected... but the Greek is a very important observer and he belonged to that category in past.
TÜR-GEO might be low profile, but can also be expected as a hot game. Also the Turkish supporters will probably be at least as present in Dortmund as the Albanians yesterday...
DeleteSo in several predictions by us, a big name was suggested for this game.
Difficult to say, whether Tello should belong in the "big name" category or not. His WC QF appointment would say yes, but otherwise his palmares aren't that big (curiously, he hasn't even been to a Copa America yet).
And yes Guida gets a bigger game than expected and than the other rather unexperienced colleagues (Schärer, Nyberg, Meler) - also because it is an 21:00 game with more expected viewers.
But of course, it could easily become one-sided and less difficult than Tello's game.
Hernandez for Tello is expected. Guida worked more with Valeri recently, so a small surprise that it is Irrati again (but mabye not really...).
DeleteI noticed that Howard Webb is on duty as an observer for the second time, both times in Dortmund. Is it possible that the observers will stay in "their" respective stadiums for as long as possible, so that Marco Guida will be observed by Kyros Vassaras primarily because the latter is stationed in Leipzig?
Not surprising that Guida (a bad referee) get this game.

Rosetti needs a New Italian referee in the top, but the quality of Guida is very low.

And Tello had a good WC in Qatar. A good start for him.
I do oppose to you calling Guida a bad referee. I'm not saying he is the best or perfect or whatever. But calling a referee who has had a great domestic season and has a lot of trust by the uefa refcom (i.e. his appoitments in UCL) bad id I think at the very least unnuanced. I can agree he is not top level like Orsato or other referee's that have attended already 2 or 3 big tournements. So if you want to call him a lower level referee compared to the others at this tournement that would be fair, but bad would not be fair at all.

You can say "favoured" after the game in case of poor performance and further appointment! Buf if we stay only at the first appointment, I don't understand the logic. To follow, Guida can get nothing while Nyberg and Meler can go far. In that case we will be able to judge I see that you start from rather your own ideas to convince other people than analyzing reality.

DeleteI don’t think it is favoritism, just by comparing the nature and importance of the games. However, reading two Italian names early in competition is definitely Rosetti’s influence

ReplyDeleteTop referees that are saved for most decisive games of MD2-MD3: Marciniak, Letexier, Makkelie, Taylor, Kovacs. Siebert and Kruzliak also still waiting.
After Italy and Spain both won their 1st game, I won’t be surprised if the Refcom dares to make the gamble and appoint Letexier to Spain v Italy. After all, most important for the standings will be Croatia v Albania and Croatia v Italy now.

Thought the Marciniak appointment may be an issue, very few other options for those that don't have a game yet, (Makkelie perhaps) - I just don't think we will see an English official in group A (could be wrong).
DeleteToo early to give anyone a second game - and those that could have done it, the only one for Group A is Oliver (and same reason with Taylor, I don't see an Englishman there). Turpin & Vincic could in theory do group B fixture but potentially wasted appointment for 2 experienced officials.
All this talk about players need to respect referees and then to find out the chair of the committee doesn't even respect other referees because he appoints a referee from his own country to a way too big clash... Disastrous management. He should resign

DeleteThat's because it's a clear pattern. From over-appointing Italian referees in CL, to unjustified selection of Guida for EURO and Mariani for COpa America, to appointing Vincic for UCL final only because he's a friend of the president... If I would be a referee from a different country my respect for Rosetti would be decreasing by the day...

ReplyDeleteI think if I were a top referee, I would prefer to start early. The idea of arriving June 10 in Frankfurt and then waiting for 10 days before the EURO starts, watching games, watch your colleagues leave the hotel, doing well and returning satisfied to the hotel, afraid of being ‘overlooked’, etc. I don’t know why but it sounds frustrating to wait for a longer time. I’m curious how Rosetti is managing his people.
General note: most of the top contenders for the final have started early this EURO.
This should be something related to the personal capacity of bearing pressure and keeping cool for a long time, so I think there isn't a definitive answer. Surely for many aspects, it's better to officiate immediately the first game, to take confidence and be aware about what is waiting for you, but at the same time there could be people having the contrary idea. Waiting and looking at other games can be also helpful in terms of understanding better the teams and the tournaments (nevertheless, Elite referees wouldn't need that), to be even more ready for the first game.
DeleteThe very top referees among the ones called for this tournaments, are surely used to this situation, they attended also previous big competitions, while it's surely different for names like Tello and the less expected referees called by committee, I think they feel less this pressure because in all cases, very happy already to be there.
But, as said, one can't answer for all people because this is very if not totally subjective.
I think so. There is a famous story from WC1998 about someone who was the one of the latter referees to do his first game, and it is said that day-by-day he got more and more anxious, seeing the other matches played without having worked, and when he did his game the performance was quite bad and indeed FIFA rejected him (deservedly in my view). Better to start early, almost always.

I think they gave the perfect game for Tello to debut at the Euros. TUR-GEO for several reasons can make him feel like you are refereeing a game between CONMEBOL teams.

Actually, I really predicted this, I was only expecting Kovacs in the Turkey match, I really predicted that Guida would be appointed in the Portugal match, I think the euro did not start well in terms of referees, we still haven't seen it. development. We have not yet seen match management that is close to perfect.

ReplyDeleteI can only write again my comment from yestarday when I predicted Guida and Tello (and not Taylor). And only add that I was expecting the Argentinian in POR-CZE and the Italian in TUR-GEO, like some of you mentioned above. I will write later today the predictions for MD2.
ReplyDeleteThe only referees not involved in MD1 are Marciniak, Makkelie and Kovacs. It makes sense, the Com will use three of the best five referees in MDs 2 & 3.
Will any referee get 3/3 group stage games? Last time it was Lahoz but it was a strategy that backfired horrible, I don't think it will happen again
As it was not mentioned yet, Howard Webb is the first observer with a second assignement. The first one was also in Dortmund with Zwayer, now with Tello.
