Does anyone know when referees are sent home this year? Surely some after the group stage? And at what stage do they have to go home if their nation is still in the tournament, QF or SF?
ReplyDeleteThis time there is 100%.
ReplyDeleteSlovakia – Romania: Siebert
Ukraine – Belgium: Taylor
Georgia – Portugal: Scharer
Czech Republic – Türkiye: Kovacs
There shows the France Holland offside call had no effect on taylor stay
ReplyDeleteDid you have doubts? It was at least supportable decision...
DeleteSo, at the end the two referees without second games are Gil Manzano and Marciniak, both with particular incidents before the tournament, as we know. We can think that committee had already planned to act in this way, it will be interesting to see whether one (Marciniak in case) will get at least a KO stage, but I have doubts. Can we remember the last referee at EURO getting only one GS and then a round of 16?
ReplyDeleteYou genuinely think Marciniak is planned to be one group stage and done? That is not going to happen.
DeletePretty sure he's planned for a R016 game very early (potentially SWI v ITA).
DeleteDid one of Scharer’s ARs get sent home?
ReplyDeleteInjury? Or maybe involved in a wrong crucial decision (I don't remember at moment)?
DeleteHis second country is Portugal, thus he's not allowed to manage this game
DeleteProbably because he's ethnic Portuguese. I guess the same would have happened to AR2 if Schärer was assigned to an Albania game, and San should be unable to do Turkey games.
DeleteThen why did they appoint Shrarer in this game, beside so many games he could be appointed. I don't understand such a thing.
DeleteUkraine getting two English referees in a row looks avoidable, but also is not a huge problem.
ReplyDeleteGil Manzano not chosen instead of Siebert or Schärer (who even seems to miss one regular AR!) doesn't look good for him. With the long break after MD1 it seems less likely (than Marciniak) to see him again.
Glenn Nyberg is the busiest referee so far, as in addition to his two appearances as the main referee, he also serves twice in the role of the fourth official, both times with Anthony Taylor as the main referee.
ReplyDeleteCould probably have been avoided to appoint Schärer to a game that doesn't allow one of his teammates, but well. Taking into account that every one except Schärer himself has this problem (Portugal, Albania, Turkey) it is difficult.
ReplyDeleteDoes it mean something thst Siebert has a full german team with Zwayer as 4O while Taylor doens't work with Oliver?
Agree that a Schrarer/Taylor swap in games would have made more sense avoiding certain things as mentioned above. Clearly UEFA feel Taylor on probably the match with more riding on it was needed.
ReplyDeleteThis could also suggest Manzano's performance (unless saved for a KO game) was rejected. Added to that Hernandez performance last night could be trouble for the Spanish officials with further matches in this tournament.
Off Topic: would it be possible to publish a post with Copa America 2024 assignments ? Mariani made his debut on Usa-Bolivia
ReplyDeleteManzano will definitely do a KO game.
ReplyDeleteSteve Clarke (scotland manager) on the tello not giving Scotland a penalty 🗣
ReplyDelete"He's from Argentina, probably doesn't speak the language, I don't know. Why's he here? Why's it not a European referee?"
Shocking
Shocking statements, indeed.
DeleteNothing is shocking anymore. We've read everything, people are telling stupid things so often that we are used to it. Interesting that he didn't tell anything about penalty in favor of Hungary, after elbowing in PK area! Nor he told anything about what happend again in SCO PK area when Varga finished with shellshock and broken bones in his head! Hypocrite! I am glad that Scotland is out because they played awful football! They had one attempt on target in 100 minutes and they wanted to get through...
DeleteDankert is really used a lot as (first) VAR. Now with a 18:00 game on Wednesday after a 21:00 game on Tuesday (and another game on Monday as AVAR).
ReplyDeleteAnd overall with already 6 appointments in the main spot.
Irrati follows with 4 games, everybody else has less.
Again Catalin Popa is not working with Kovacs. One was speculating when the selection was announced that he was called at this tournament rather to help with the language barrier but it seems that is not the case. I really doubt that Vassaras insisted for his calling, I rather think it was a choice made by the Com for a little variety in the selection, of course backed up by meritocracy.
ReplyDeleteCatalin Popa in EURO 2024:
Delete1 Serbia-England
Ref: Orsato; Var: Irrati, Valeri, Popa
2 Switzerland-Germany
Ref: Orsato; Var: Irrati, Valeri, Popa
3 France-Poland
Ref: Guida; Var: Irrati, Popa, Martins
No other appointments.
It seems obvious that Popa was christened as the VMO equivalent of a 'fourth official', to learn from Irrati, on the road to 2028. Surely Vassaras helped with this nomination :).
Attending this Euro as a learning experience in order to prepare for future competitions, having Irrati "assigned as a mentor" for Popa actually makes sense, indeed. I was saying that I doubt about Vassaras's involvment here because he would not gain much image capital within the fans with this VMO nomination and if he has influence, he would rather use it with other better ocassions (with Kovacs or Fesnic).
DeleteSimilar situation for Ulusoy, who only was used as AVAR twice - in the two games refereed by Meler.
DeleteIt seems that Sandro Schärer was planned for Group E, but things got unexpectedly complicated.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Marciniak will get another hit during the tournament, his experience and acceptance of the players cannot be overestimated and it would be stupid not to use it
ReplyDeleteOf course, Marciniak will have at least one more match, if not two in KO. I don't understand how Chefren can have doubts. Let's remember that Marciniak has won three finals, two of them significant. Huge experience, charisma, he is still in the TOP 5 elite referees and most importantly... he refereed only one match at this tournament at a very good level.
ReplyDeleteI have doubts because in case of KO appointment, the management by committee would be a nosense, at least in my opinion. Why? Because if we start from the assumption that he had been hidden and punished following the incident in Champions League semifinal, then giving him only a group stage game and to follow directly a Round of 16 would put him even in a better position than the others, who had to do well in two games to book the KO stage. Moreover, I don't remember the last referee at EURO who got KO game after only one group stage, and based on the work that committee is making (assessing very carefully every performance), this would be something out from the context.
DeleteNevertheless, I agree that it would be very strange to see Marciniak out from further games, but then why managing him in this way, if at the end he will be treated similarly to others? Hope my point of view is clear, nothing against the referee, but I try always to understand the reasons behind a choice.
The appointment of Schaerer for Portugal was then surely not planned, I think committee would have never allowed the Swiss referee to get a game in which one of his assistant referee was out due to nationality. A big injustice for sure to the Swiss trio, so we can draw conclusion at first this wasn't planned and due to performances in course, they had to make this choice.
ReplyDeleteNow it should be expected to see De Almeida with Zwayer team, replacing Lupp and getting back his game, maybe this could happen indeed in the next Zwayer game in KO stage. Otherwise I would be very sorry for the Swiss / Portuguese assistant referee and I don't think committee will be so unfriendly with him.
The appointment of Taylor (another Englishman in Group E) and Scharer (without regular AR) just seem odd to me - and easily avoided. This just suggests these were not planned at all, and I just don't think the result changed that either (as the ref com have had plenty of time to use other officials after MD2 group E results).
DeleteAnd that Taylor also did Belgium's last match in GS at WC22. So he does there final deciding game one after another. Also seems avoidable (I know that was a FIFA tournament and this is UEFA, but still)
