  5. OT:
The Refereeing Committees of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF are a bunch of scoundrels. How dare they and with what gall do they decide to assign Mario Escobar (GUA) to the crucial Mexico vs. Ecuador match? Wasn't his performance in the Canada vs. Peru match bad and shameful enough?

The little faith and hope I had left in world refereeing has now definitely vanished with this illogical appointment. TBH, the Euro started off very well and managed to actually raise my spirits towards refereeing. But without fail, they too wrongly returned to permissive refereeing. And the directives/instructions that they so proudly touted before the start of the tournament unsurprisingly disappeared.

Perhaps I take the art of refereeing too seriously. But it truly bothers and saddens me to see the way in which today's so-called modern referees (and refereeing committees) freely choose to trample on the laws of the game.

    2. Missed two very clear red card incidents.
      Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3o8gUEvCWY

3:12: Missed a clear headbutt by Peru. Main issue for me is VAR somehow decided that his was not worthy of review, though ref seemed to have some awareness of the incident as he spoke to the offending player. For me, clear cut violent conduct, and was taken that by most commentators in the USA (and Canada). Baffling given similar severity to the Weah RC in the USA game which was sent to the monitor.

5:57 Missed this SFP and gave a yellow card in real time.

  6. Unlike Escobar, Maurizio Mariani (ITA) deservingly gets a second match assignment. He's been assigned to:
Jamaica (already eliminated) vs Venezuela (already qualified).
If these referee committees had a shred of credibility. Escobar's and Mariani's assignments would have been swapped.

  7. Meler(FO:Obrenovic) for ENG-SLO, Letexier(FO: Gözübüyük) for SPA-GEO

  8. So no Makkelie in 1/8th finals? Because Gozubuyuk is appointment as FO Sunday, unlikely that he will be also be appointed at Monday with a potential Makkelie. And Makkelie will also not do Austria-Turkey on Tuesday, because the winner of that match will be playing against the Netherlands. So either we will see Makkelie with another FO4, or he will be saved for the 1/4 finals.

    1. Not a bad idea to save some top elites for QF. also possible with Taylor, Turpin, Orsato, Zwayer or Vincic. Especially if they are no final candidates, then they should be kept available for hot clashes in QF and SF.

    2. @Liam
According to some sources, Makkelie left the tournament.

  9. Great appointment for Meler! Expected Letexier on a Ro16 game, not this one however- Kuipers observing too which is interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  10. One could have expected definitely more for Letexier, to me this is the least sonorous Round of 16 and by far the easiest one could find on paper. Nevertheless, I think a strong argument can be indeed that they use this game just to keep him for another possible appointment, hard to believe he can struggle in ESP - GEO, to be honest. I expected Nyberg in this game because more suitable looking at how the Swedish was used (the French is clear ahead in his UEFA path), but yes one should also consider about the limited options. Now we should then see Nyberg in another Round of 16.
About Meler, Kuipers observation means that his EURO could continue even after this game, otherwise no need for me to appoint a committee member. Big plans for the Turkish referee, Bjorn knows him very well because the Dutch already made crucial observations with the Turkish.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. to give Letexier this (probably easy, but let's not forget Marocca at last WC! these underdog games can get quite challenging if they develop unexpectedly...) game could also mean that committee wants to keep him as an option for a QF or a SF?
(personally and performancewise I would even consider Letexier a final candiate, because he is in great form and some top elites are not. but the french is still not very experienced, it is his first big tournement...)

      Delete
    2. Actually, to appoint Letexier in R16 is already a big favor to him, considering his blunder in SER X DEN.

      Delete
  11. So, Meler and Letexier rewarded for their performances. Interesting Kuipers observing Meler!

For 1st July - Dias not possible and he has had the netherlands in GS, so, we could see him on Aus v Tur.
If reports of Zwayer on Fra v Bel are correct, Por v Slov could be for Orsato.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Rom v Ned could work for Nyberg or Schrarer!

      Delete
    2. I will stay with my initial predictions, i.e. Makkelie for FRA-BEL and Taylor for POR-SVN.
I don't think Gözübüyük's appointment is such a big hint, because they could want a bigger name as 4th for the R16 top game anyway.
And Taylor has no really good QF (if ENG qualifies) because GER/DEN have Oliver in R16 and FRA/BEL already had Taylor.
But certainly more options for Monday than for today.

      Delete
    3. I do understand the Taylor question (which does work), it seems though appointing a same ref country twice isn't an issue (as we have seen already with Taylor/Oliver). So, I wouldn't rule out a top half QF.

      Delete
    4. Letexier rewarded for lending a big helping hand to Slovenia at the expense of Serbia.

      Delete
  12. And we have Rosetti for Letexier, as very often happens, the Italian head of UEFA refereeing will observe a referee in a sub standard game, for the official involved, maybe just hoping that everything will go well for a next assignment.
Interesting to underline that, aftre having started EURO with Turpin, now he has switched on Letexier.

    4. Guys it's Gräfe, we can't get much coming from him

      Delete
    5. I just don't understand what Gräfe wants to achieve by revealing insider information before it is official. His all-round attacks against everything and everyone are well known and you can form your own opinion as to how objective they are. In any case, his indiscretions, with which he probably primarily wants to provoke UEFA, devalue his integrity.

      Delete
    6. It's clear. He just want to provoke Felix, UEFA and DFB. Those 3 are his targets always.

      Delete
  17. I'm trying to figure out possible strategies.
So, assuming Manzano, Kruzliak, Guida, Siebert, Tello and Scharer won't get any R16 (my opinion, no leaks, no source :) ), we have 13 referees to be appointed for 15 games. I also don't expect that just 2 refs will get 2 KO games, so probably there will be some unexpected exclusions.

    ESP-GEO: Letexier
    GER-DEN: Oliver
FRA-BEL: Zwayer (not confirmed, but I like it)
    POR-SVN: Orsato (prediction)

    ROU-NED: Vincic (prediction)
    AUT-TUR: Nyberg (prediction)
    ENG-SVK: Meler
    SUI-ITA: Marciniak

5 remaining referees with 0 KO games: Turpin, Taylor, Kovacs, Makkelie, Dias. Without repeating anyone from R16:

If QF1 ESP-GER, it sounds like Makkelie stuff.
If QF2 POR-FRA, last call for Taylor.
If QF3 NED-TUR, I would bet on Dias.
If QF4 ENG-ITA, Turpin would fit.

And last, 3 different refs for SF and Final could be easily Marciniak, Vincic, and the best QF performer between Makkelie and Turpin.

I did not mention Kovacs (no KO stage) and Orsato (R16 and nothing more) on purpose, because of their GS matches.
    Your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Now I'm reading appointments from Grafe.
No Vincic but Dias in R16. So Vincic after ESP-ITA would get a big quarter final, ESP-GER or POR-FRA, because he already had Switzerland and Italy, and the last QF between NED/ROU-TUR/AUT sounds like an under-achievement for him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. My opinion is firstly that I wouldn't bet that all favourite teams make it to the last 8. England, Netherlands and probably Italy are all but sure.
ESPGER would be good for Makkelie, but he had thet exact game at WC22. I would prefer to appoint Makkelie in a SF, he performed better than Vincic for example.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why does everyone seem to think that Siebert is done for the tournament? His performances seemed quite decent, no?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I answer here to you and Cassius. I picked 8 teams for QF as more "sonorous names", but I know that football it's not that predictable (as well as appointment predictions).

About Siebert I agree, but it's a short competition, and we all know it's not all about performance... mostly status, politics, number of referee from a single nation, AND THEN performance.

  21. OT:

we complain about UEFA refs and their added;well Ivan Barton was something else tonight in Usa vs Panama.

He added 4 minutes on a match that should have atleast 7 or more minutes of added time.

Also, his officiating was typical CONCACAF;lenient, no consistent at all .

Let's sum up just 2nd half and points were plenty of time was lost:

-63'he whistles penalty in favour of Panama..He gets called by VAR,overturns his decision at around 67'..

Maybe card was missed for diving?

-84' Panama scores, atleast 2 minutes were lost due to their celebrations

-88' RC is shown rightfully to Panama player, cynical foul from behind on Pulisic.

What I dont get is how Pulisic managed to escape booking?

He did exactly ehat Van Dijk did to Paredes in WC,barged into a player that fouled him and no YC was shown to him.

Then we get mass confrotations and only 1 YC was shown..

-then injury time says 4 minutes, wow.

There we had 2 YC's to Panama players, some stoppages and the end was at 94:30.

    Just wow.

So either he cant tell time or that is CONCACAF standard that needs to change cause that added time was embarrasing.

Also in 1st half he missed VC where VAR had to call him and that is also mistake on his part.

Just typical CONCACAF refereeing-very mediocre and not consistent.

  22. What game could Meler get if he performs well under Kuipers watch?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think SuperCup could be perfect for Meler.
SuperCup is usually assigned to a "new star" Elite, who was not assigned to a big Final before (Taylor 2020, Karasev 2021, Oliver 2022, Letexier 2023).

My bet would be Nyberg or Eskas but both will whistle at Olympics. Kruzliak had a good year in CL as well, but not at the EURO.
So Meler could be the one. Of course a German, Zwayer or Siebert, is also possible.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ DrMr

Your Croatian compatriots and media should be really really ashamed that they have ruined the EURO of one of UEFA’s top officials. Absolutely disgusting behavior of Modric and the head coach.

In west-Europe we first look at the team and say that the team was “dreadful”, however Croatia blames a referee for their loss despite:
    i) a missed penalty against Italy
ii) a draw against Albania, the weakest team in group, after a goal in injury (!!) time. Can you spot the denominator?

Nope, it was all the fault of a referee and 8 minutes of injury time, which wasn’t even out of the place, after a VAR check, plenty of yellow cards, slow substitutions and time wasting. The fact that Orsato never adds enough additional time does not mean that other referees are also supposed to do that.

Yes, negative media attention can be the end of a tournament. Look at Gil Manzano, look at Makkelie, or Lahoz at EURO 2021. But tell me:
    - Why was Marciniak officiating a Champions League final after loads of negative media attention about him being associated with extreme right politician?
    - Why was Kovacs assigned to the Europa League final regardless of death threats and vocal abuse after Barcelona-PSG?
    - Why are Italian or Slovenian referees always backed after negative media reports?

And why is Makkelie not backed after a masterclass in Real-PSG and Croatia-Italy? I’m sorry to say it, but the treatment of referees is so so RANDOM. One is supported, the other is not.

If I were Makkelie, I would retire with immediate effect after years of no support by UEFA, favoritism and extremely toxic environment in Nyon. The Dutchman has been in the middle of the most challenging games for years now, but is never rewarded.
Nowadays, it is not a compliment when the referee is assigned to most challenging/sensitive context in the decisive rounds, because of the media attention it can generate. Unfortunately…

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all, what kind of media are you reading?
And what kinda judgemental post is this?

We in western Europe first look at team?
Modric and and head coach should be ashamed?

If anything Modric and coach are too polite, they only have issue with 8 minutes and it's not like they have been raging about this.

They have class and they mostly blame themselves,no luck and this 8 minutes thing is something they say when reporters ask them and demand answers but in no way is that an excuse.

And now I'm the one who is not player and I will give you my opinion.

It wasn't just the added minutes that was the problem,it's whole different criterium throughout the whole match.

One example was kicking the ball away,in 1st half ITA player gets verbal warning,in 2nd half CRO player gets YC for less blatant kicking the ball away.

Italians were doing that timewasting thing for the entirety of the 1st half, corners were taking them around 1 minute and they had plenty corners.

Only 1 minute was added in the 1st half.

He was speeding every Croatia's attack after they scored, too easy on whistle almost every contact CRO players made was a foul.

Whistling end at exactly 08:00 after Italians were celebrating and not allowing Croatia atleast 1 chance however small chance that might be is totally ridiculous, but ok.

So if anything, he ruined himself this Euro, but I expect him to be appointed for some match for sure.

And also, this is a ref who had too many controversial decisions in last couple of years in very important matches...

      Not maybe wrong,but controversial:

-You mentioned Real vs Psg,that's the one match. We all remeber what was said and what was done with him and Khelaifi.

-Also ,there was England vs Denmark, very controversial penalty that he gave to England .

YHe was in VAR in WC18 Finals, big decisions went against guess who-Croatia.

-Chelsea and Dortmund was also his controversial match, even Emre Can blamed him for Dortmund's loss.Yes that same Can that plays in WEST EUROPE.

-And do I have to even mention him and his team in Serbia vs Portugal match were Ronaldo clearly scored goal and it was not given?

And about death threats for Kovacs and why was he assigned to whistle EL Finals.

He did nothing wrong in Barca match, his decisions were outsanding, even Barca fans had nothing to say negative the way their team performed so poorly.

Now about this west Europe thing and you looking only teams and not refs.

I don't know from what country in west Europe are you,but we'll stick to Google here(Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco and Switzerland are all in Western Europe)

We have Can complaining about Makkelie,Bellingham calling out Zwayer few years ago and saying horrible things about him, recently whole Germany and Bayern exploded when Marciniak made decision against them vs Real.

We have whole France and PSG turn against Barcelona and Aytekin when he whistled that famous La Remontada.

We have Khelaifi and whole Psg against Makkelie.

Vidal and whole Bayern with Kassai in 2017.

      That's just a few.

So please, check your garden first and then look at others.

Cause it's easy to say that we only blame refs.
Have another look at the media and you will see that the blame is mostly on players.
Ref is just mentioned here and there.

      Have a great day 😉

      Delete
    2. You haven’t read the Croatian media about Makkelie?

You haven’t heard the vocal abuse by head coach. He should be banned from football after that tbh. And Modric has played too long time for Real Madrid, a team that has the reputation to always benefit from referee decisions.

In my neutral opinion, Makkelie refereed that CRO-ITA very well.

I agree that he suffered too much from controversial incidents, which partly can be explained by his own management, partly by a very poor VAR (Van Boekel) and partly by the appointment strategy of UEFA, always sending Makkelie to difficult games in the decisive rounds.

UEFA not backing Makkelie after a masterclass in REAL-PSG, but backing Kovacs after Barca-PSG - how do you explain that? I can’t.

      Delete
    3. I dont know what sources of media you have, maybe you read only headlines, but here have a look at their statements.

      Modric did not say anything,here you have Dalic,CRO coach;

I will not talk about the judge, I will not look for an alibi in him. I don't think the criteria was the same, not even close. The problem is those eight minutes. The maximum was five, he put eight and I still have no comment. I don't want to get into it anymore. We as a team were able to solve it", concluded Dalić.

If that's horrible, then I dont think you watched Muller,Can or any of those statements taht I gave you an example.

If he should be banned from football cause of that, then look at history and see what Klop,Mourinho,Pep,Tuchel and some other managers have said.

What masterclass in Real vs Psg?????
Doubtful Real goal after possible foul on Donnaruma..
Goal so dobtful that even PSG owner went cofront him.

Kovacs on the other hand made every decision 100%correct in that Barca PSG match, why would they not back him?

      RC Araujo clear as day
      Penalty on Dembele absolutely
      No penalty for Barca absolutely
Sending off Xavi for ridiculous behaviour, yes

All big decisions were spot on as well as disciplinary control...

So do you have problem with Kovacs or are you just big Makkelie fan here?

      Delete
    4. Yes JK, Zwayer is often often abused in social media and media. Often the players and clubs say things about him. And Zwayer refereed great matches in the last seasons. It's just sometimes you have to accept it. They are bigger than the poor referee and they will win, fans and media will always be in their side. It's a lot of psychological thing.

  31. What a shame: Makkelie has to go home.
And that after his masterclass during ITACRO. Possibly only criticism of the added injury time, but that is determined by the VAR and the 4th official. He always gets the toughest matches, under the highest tension. Refcom, it's a shame!
Is this a political choice? It can't be based on his performance.
I think Makkelie should have a really good conversation with 'Mr.' Rosetti.

I understand that it is difficult to give Makkelie the final (although, if his performance warrants it...), but already sending him away... I don't understand what's behind that. There seems to be a hidden agenda at the Refcom: getting the hottest matches (and often with good results), but not being rewarded.

    7. Eric: possibly yes, that is why they gave him these games in the first place. Strategy. Some referees have to go far and it has been decided on beforehand, it seems.

@Unknown: Bas Nijhuis indeed suggested yesterday, in a talkshow, that Ceferin has tight connections with his Croatian neighbors. And that it would be the end for DM

Apparantly Nyberg stays and is appointed to R16, after two of the easiest games in group.
But a reliable referee in top games has to leave because of some sore Croatian losers? :)

      Wow. Just wow. I’m speechless

    8. If that's true - have to say I'm surprised by this to say the least!!

    9. Yeah, Croatia has such powers that can determine if refs stay or go home?!?!?!?!

      Yep,I read that...

    10. They have - see comment below

    11. If that's the case, then some of our referees with all the connections they have would whistle in CL.

      We would have better stadiums.

Maybe even crucial refereeing decisions would go in our favour(Morocco,Argentina,France and so on...)if we have all this power.

You know how funny and ridiculous that sounds?

Or maybe he wasn't that good in that match.
But no,it's all small Croats and their connections.

  34. I can not belive what does Uefa do to Makkelie. I need to apologise to Chefren and all of you, but this is SHAME! One of top top performances in the championship is punished with going home!? I really dont know how Danny still find motivation for officiating at UEFA. He should have serious communication with Rosseti. The main question is,why Kuipers doesnt protect him, he deserved that!

    1. Rumor is that Björn Kuipers wants Rosetti’s position.
And his ego is too big; he cares a lot about “being the best Dutch referee ever in history books” - basically just like Collina, who didn’t allow Rizzoli to do both EURO and WC final - and neither Marciniak get that chance, regardless of performance level.

Everyone thinks they are the best. Especially if they have stopped for a while.

    Nyberg - Belgium France
    Zwayer - Romania Netherlands
    Orsato - Portugal Slovenia

After the bad performance of Ordato now a easy match to take a better lead.
And what i said before tournement.

Rosetti is the boss and Orsato has to lead the final

  36. Only what I see now that they should give quarterfinals to Tello,Vincic,Kovacs,Marciniak(again) due to sending Makkelie home.

  38. Makkelie gets the Cakir treatment, unbelievable management by Rosetti.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wasn’t Ceferin responsible for Cakir’s treatment? And now again I guess. Rosetti not backing Makkelie is probably because Rosetti cares about his own position as well.

    2. The Cakir treatment is keeping him until the end even when you've decided he won't anything, at least Rosetti is honest this time and send Makkelie home...

  39. If rumours are true, Rosetti - or rather Čeferin - spat in Gil Manzano's and Makkelie's faces. One can understand Kovacs being sent home but to be honest he didn't do much wrong in that war game. Even if Czechia's goal is questioned (it's a foul on GK, imo), Kwiatkowski should've been rejected as well, but it's not the case, so...

On the other hand, referees who were lucky to handle less challenging games are kept. The only thing this UEFA RefCom care about is media and nothing more.

I wonder whether we'll see Tello and Vinčič again. If yes, we may just give up with our attempts to find logic in RefCom's moves.

    1. We don't know a agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Maybe in contract is a word about min 3 matches (including one KO match)?

Three years ago, Rapallini and Gil Manzano get a three matches (two GS and one KO in first round after groups).

If we will talk about Ceferen as refereeing boss, I can imagine a Vincić with final, specially after Turpin's and Orsato's performances.

    2. And both Manzano and Makkelie have a countrymen in the Refcom…

How can we explain that they are always sacrificed in sensitive games (Ukraine-Italy - Manzano), (Real-PSG, Leverkusen-Roma, Croatia-Italy - Makkelie)? If I’m not mistaken, Carballo and Kuipers are involved when the appointsments are made

Furthermore, the referee level in Spain and Netherlands is not improving (rather poor) despite of their presence in the Refcom, while Sajn is doing a much better job in Slovenia - or at least cares about the appointments of Slovenian refs.

    3. To: Euro Soccer Ref.
The self-explanatory video clips you made from the game Germany- Hungary have also played a not-to-be underestimated role in the evaluation performance of the Ref. Makkelie . This next to Italy-Croatia

    4. Fully agree with you, Euro Soccer Referee, I wouldn't add more.
Today Rosetti also presented a comedy, saying that all so far about refereeing and VAR has been very good, he didn't take any position, just said what VAR assessed, but the mistakes were hidden, and 20 interventions were not commented as too high number. Talking just about statistics... who cares...

    1. Roberto Rosetti:
"These decisions are taken only on the quality of performance," he said. "Some referees will not be appointed not because they performed badly, but other referees performed better. Some refereeing teams did one match, some two; others will do three and, maybe some, four. My only target is to take correct decisions based on meritocracy, quality and our values."

      Delete
    2. That is another spit in Manzano and Makkelie’s face.

      “Some referees were better”

Just be honest and say it’s all about media and headlines and politics, instead of match control, match difficulty, number of OFR’s or the overall rating by the observer.

    3. JK Manzano is lucky to even be at EURO, Makkelie was wrong in law (again) in GER-HUN, and mismanaged the added time and missed a CLEAR handball in CRO-ITA. It was a decent performance but far from a “masterclass”. So I can back Rosetti’s quote here. However also for me Vincic and Dias should go home

      Delete
    4. Oliver, you're kidding us right?

Makkelie hasn't made any crucial mistake while Orsato and Letexier have and both were given R16 matches.

Rosetti is all about politics and it's beyond obvious Ceferin interferes with appointments.

  41. The Dutch article states:
“ Italy-Croatia was rated by referee experts as the best managed match of this European Championship. Sources around the referee committee have expressed their incomprehension, but the decision has been made.”

It was known already that Ceferin is not entirely independent from the Referee Committee, after Cakir was mistreated (after he did not whistle a penalty kick to Slovenia). And once again Ceferin seems to be responsible for humiliating a referee.

Not to forget, a Slovenian referee (Vincic) assigned to the Champions League final 23/24 after a hidden path.

How can we still enjoy or evaluate referee performances when it means nothing? When top performances are not longer rewarded, “external circumstances” can affect further appointments, or when a president is personally responsible to destroy referee careers?

  43. incredibly Makkelie send home because of Croatian politics... I always thought performance was more important than politics but I was so naive. CL final for Vincic was already a sign of the future

    ReplyDelete
  44. Performance doesn't matter. We’ve known that for a longer time.

The referees who officiate the final are determined early in the season, before knock-outs, and get a "hidden path". Refcom knows exactly what games are the most risky and thus how to protect referees from negative headlines when appointing referees.
    2021 -> Kuipers EURO
    2022 -> Turpin UCL
2023 -> the plan was Taylor/Makkelie, but with an English team in the final and the latter in poor form (injured), there were no other options than Marciniak.
    2024 -> Vincic UCL
Even Soares Dias and his Conference league final is a good example, as he wasn’t assigned to a single UCL game.
2024 -> Orsato already locked for the final, under the condition that Italy is out.

The question is, what are UEFA's future plans with Makkelie.
Turpin refereed a UCL final after a dreadful EURO 2020, he was sent home after GS.
Is there a chance that Makkelie/KNVB now "owes something" and that he will referee the UCL final next season - or will they continue to treat him like a sacrificial lamb / Cakir. In latter case he would be better off retiring.

    1. Rosetti was very furious but differently from other referees, he can't renounce to Marciniak. Easy to guess that in case it hadn't been the Polish to do that, another referee would have been even excluded from EURO. Still, you have the confirmation with this very strange management, what is the sense of one group stage game, and then a KO, if you have in mind to punish them? Then just use the referee as you want, if you think to assign him to Switzerland - Italyu round of 16.
So far the only referee with 1 GS + 1 KO and I think it will last for a very long time. To see whether after this game, in case of good performance, he will get more.
Nevetheless, I'm always in trouble to believe to "poisoned cake" for the Polish, because the first criterion by committee must be that committee has a full trust in the man they are about to appoint for a game...
