  1. First appointment - easy prediction.
I remember Philipp words when I asked why Rosetti for Turpi in that CL game. "Maybe for EURO opener?" Indeed, yes.
Need of a big name for this game, to give the address of refereeing to people, like Makkelie one year ago, and in my opinion after Orsato, if Italy in final, we have the second candidate for the final of the tournament, the French. Would be extremely deserved for his career, but of course everything can happen and France is strong national team as well.

  2. In the absence of the Marciniak precisely for the opening match after the semi-final of the Champions League, this was expected.
    Prediction for tomorrow:
    Hungary – Switzerland: Kovacs
    Spain – Croatia: Zwayer
    Italy – Albania: Vincic

    1. Kovacs won't do Hungary as mentioned in previous posts

    2. Definitely, Kovacs can't handle directly Hungary, chances only for the other game of the group, but for me unlikely.
I agree again with Philipp, seeing Gil Manzano as very good option for a game like Hungary - Switzerland.

    3. I'd go with:
Hun v Swi - Soares Dias
      Spa v Cro - Oliver
      Ita v Alb - Siebert

    4. The remark is correct...
      Correction on prediction for tomorrow:
      Hungary – Switzerland: Gil Manzano
      Spain – Croatia: Zwayer
      Italy – Albania: Vincic

    5. I don't think Marciniak's "absence" was determinative. Some of us have said Turpin for this match since the schedule was announced. There's are easy arguments that he made sense for Turpin over Marciniak that had nothing to do with the UCL semifinal.

  3. Expected appointment for me - the only debate was who would act as 4th. With Letexier appointed, I think we will see quite a bit of same country officials appointed.

  4. Fully expected, especially because Rosetti observed him during CL semifinal match, and extremely deserved. Congratulation and good luck. My prediction for 2nd day:
    Hungary-Switzerland: Nyberg
    Spain-Croatia: Taylor
    Italy-Albania: Kruzliak

  5. IMO :
    1. Without Italy final candidate -Orsato
    2. If Italy in final but not France - Turpin
    3. If Italy faces France in final then scenario in little complex:
As Marciniak did the final of WC so they keep him away with that unwritten rule!
Makkelie already semi final and country mam did the final last year.
Taylor still no Champions league final but many final!
With recent performance Kovacs Latexier, Zwayer did a brilliant job. But still age experience matters!

    1. It is not strictly about being in the final. France and Italy reaching the semifinals is enough to block Turpin and Orsato respectively.

    2. Not sure, Matei. They could wait for the results of semifinals, in such important tournament, applying a different appointments management, but we will see.

      Delete
    3. Or we could, you know, wait to see how people perform in the tournament.

    4. At Euro 2012 the final referee was Pedro Proença although Portugal reached the semi-finals

      Delete
    5. I know that performance is the last word. But remember Latexier or Kovacs got final above Vincic, surely not! So, performance, politics, age, experience countries presence all matters!

    6. Mr matei14 I like to read your answer. But this is a foolish reply. Not an excellent one from a experienced guy like you!

    7. @Promo - planning for the UCL, where the same referee can't get it again and it's an annual event, is a lot different than a quadrennial tournament.

      Delete
    8. And I should add... of course those things all count. And it means you start with an acceptable pool of probably 6-8 candidates with a preferred pool of maybe 3-4. All the factors you say will play a role, but performance is the one variable that is unknowable and unpredictable. We can at least consider the idea that France or Italy (or even Poland!) could advance. Considering the possibility that Turpin, Marciniak, or Orsato has an unacceptable performance is very challenging for us!

    9. In general I am more cautious when it comes to appointments. Here are so examples:

      1) I disagreed when Marciniak had both the UCL SF and final last season. Same with Tori Penso happened. Ot ks not ok
      2) I disagreed when at the World Cup a referee was appointed to a game of a country that has the same speaking language as him. I am talking about Lahoz in Argentin-Netherlands
      3) I also don't like the appointment of Proenca in Euro 2012 final. Why? Maybe the Spanish fans feared at the beggining that Proenca would revenge his country. Better to avoid. Same goes this time for above
      4) I think it would be best for Kovacs to avoid the group of Hungary at all. There are plenty of other options.

Basically, it is better to avoid media headlines before the games with wise appointments. Why to complicate things?

    10. #2 seems insane to me

#1 seems to happen rarely (though more recently) as a result of poor planning. #3, I get it, but FIFA/UEFA no longer seem to care and trust their best referees to be professionals.

I don't understand if #4 even continues to be a conversation. He is a citizen of Hungary. For all intents and purposes he should (and I'm sure will) be treated as a FIFA referee from both Romania and Hungary. It's just like how Faghani wouldn't referee Iran or Australia now (or in their groups).

  6. Do they not have a reserve assistant referee here?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course, they definitely have reserve ARs even if they don't appear in the official appointments.

Remember support referees came to Germany along with their regular AR1s: Peljto/Ibrisimbegovic, Eskas/Engan, Obrenovic/Praprotnik, Rumsas/Radius, Balakin/Berkut, then Gozubuyuk whose pair is AR2 Balder (one could expect that an AR like Zeinstra who appeared in the last EURO final would rather go on holidays than go to EURO as reserve)

    2. Strange that the reserve assistant referee is not included in the official appointment by UEFA.

  7. My thoughts
Hungary – Switzerland: Artur Soares Dias
    Spain – Croatia: Danny Makkelie
    Italy – Albania: Ivan Kružliak

  8. Turpin appointed is no surprise and actually quite predictable.

More surprising is that he’s (once again!) observed by Mr. Roberto Rosetti. Back in 2021, Makkelie was observed by Fröhlich in the opener; not a committee member.

So, why is Turpin observed by Rosetti twice within a short period?

It can have two reasons imo. First of all, Turpin is a serious candidate for the final if Orsato is not available. That’s one. A second reason for this observation could be the new dissent policy. Over the last years, Turpin has adapted his own style. A very lenient style, so to say. He tried to manage dissents with his personality and management skills; not with cards. Now, he has to adapt his style to new UEFA guidelines and to set the tone for the rest of the EURO, which can be interesting.

Having said that, I don’t think Turpin will need many cards in what should be a fair game between two fair teams. If his foul detection is good, he will be accepted.

    1. Well, maybe Rosetti was not observer in the opening game in 2021 because it was a game of Italy as host on Olimpico...

Rosetti presence Friday is nothing out of ordinary, it is normal to have him hoth in the opening game as well as in the final if possible regardless of the referees. Turpin is a candidate for the final anyway.

    2. Well, in 2021 they could have appointed other committee member instead. But they didn’t.
So, I think there is “more” behind Rosetti appointed there, again.

The new guidelines and a lenient referee in the opener can be the main reason for close monitoring?

We know Rosetti takes the new policy very serious and it can only work well if applied in a good way from the start.

Im sure the referees in match 2-5 will be selected carefully too. :)

I expect Kovacs appointed in one the early games as he already applied the new policy in his UEL final.

    3. "So, I think there is “more” behind Rosetti appointed there, again."

I don't think so personally. You have to remember that EURO 2020 was a total logistical nightmare (getting person x to place y for game z was not a simple task), and a result of this was that the in-stadium observer reports counted for little in this tournament. Including Friday, all of the other last ten EUROs had one of the ≈top3 most important UEFA refereeing figures at the time as the appointed assessor.

  9. Gentelmans, I have two questions:
    1. If Italy go to semis, but not in the final, can we still see Orsato in the final?
    2. Promotion/demotion of referees in La liga?
    Thanks in advance!

  10. My predictions:
    Hungary – Switzerland: Szymon Marciniak
    Spain – Croatia: Glenn Nyberg
Italy – Albania: Halil Umut Meler

    1. I don’t think so that Marciniak will be in Germany group, after what happened with Bayern München. The polish newspaper sad that Marciniak will be appointed for the low ganes, not for big ones.

  11. OT:

Here is Qatar vs India match, some highlights with all key points.

Goal that should not have counted.
Disciplinary control that was too lenient or too strict.
1st Qatar goal should not have been given, the end.
Then, their 2nd goal possible foul before goal?
And bookings that I dont understand.

    45'very soft YC
58'possible RC,only YC givend to IND Fernandes
90+1instead of foul against IND,KIM whistles that IND player made a foul and awards with him with very soft YC.

Controversial match that will be talked about in world's most populated country.

  13. Turpin will be the example of how to handle or how not handle dissent under the new rules. It's one thing for Rosetti to say words another to understand their meaning.

    1. With a lot of sadness, when I read the screenshots of abusive comments against referees at the beginning of the video, I can remember many similar comments here on the blog by anonymous, or maybe UEFA copied directly them!
Once again I use this opportunity to say sorry to all the people involved and I praise UEFA for having published this documentary. We must fight against people who hate referees!

    2. And I forgot to say, excellent that in this documentary finally Rosetti mentioned Turkey and Greece as very problematic countries! This must be over!

  19. The Frenchman has a fine style. However I'd presume he won't get the first game and the last regardless of whom is in the final.

The final will be the Slovenian - for obvious reasons.
